Repost from @john.rebuildstronger • At some point youve probably heard a coach or lifting buddy say Squats are great for the hamstrings! But are they actually?⁠ ⁠ Looking at the available body of information we can comfortably say for the majority of squats, the hamstrings do aid in hip extension, but the squat exercise likely does not provide the most optimal stimulus for growth. ⁠ ⁠ Anecdotally, we can hypothesize that squat variations that utilize greater hip flexion and less knee flexion would stress the hamstrings more via a longer rom. ⁠ ⁠ So regardless of what type of athlete you may be, we recommend that the squat not be your main hamstring work. Doing more specific hamstring work will likely grow your hamstrings better. Had a fun workout today and worked up to 782 (355KG), mainly just focused on form and efficiency. It was kind of a mind F*** to me that this kind of weight is no longer a struggle, just two years ago I finally broke the 800 barrier in competition and that was 4 years after pulling 700 for the first time. This sport is all about consistency and your daily habits honestly, for the last 6 years I’ve trained 4-5 days a week consistently and ate 5-6 times a day and never faltered except for military breaks that were out of my control. All the little things will add up and make you better in the long run, just be patient and don’t take any short cuts to get better. Focus on yourself and gradually things will improve until you are the best version of yourself 💪🏻 I used to worry about what others where doing but once I just focused on myself and could care less the rest just fell into place. @kheycie @animalmilitary @animalpak @mbslingshot - @dan_grigs on Instagram

2X2 with 575 (24lb PR double) to end deadlifts this training block. Back in November of 2019, I blacked out on my third attempt with 572 at the American barbell club meet. In February, I got it for my third attempt at the hybrid showdown. Today I doubled 3 pounds above that number twice. A lot can happen in a year as long as you do everything with intent. Attempts from yesterday Squat: 297.5kgs/655lbs 320kgs/705lbs-no lift 330kgs/727.5lbs-no lift Mad at myself for how I executed on squat. Definitely a few things to work on for training. Thought I had done enough to clean up my depth issues in the last couple weeks of training, but will have to keep myself more accountable. Was quite surprised I wasn’t able to come up with the third, but lost tightness in the hole and couldn’t recover. Bench: 225kgs/496lbs 242.5kgs/534lbs 255kgs/562lbs 56lbs was the planned third going into the meet with some wiggle room based on how second felt. Wasn’t feeling good about bench during warm ups and was doubting 562 would be there. However, the grip on the bench was phenomenal and made for easy attempts. Considered going 260kgs for third, but after squats decided to play it safe. Deadlift: 340kgs/749lbs 365kgs/804lbs 385kgs/848lbs Again, warm ups weren’t feeling the best, and could feel a bit of cramping coming on. Grip had me worried since the chalk they had was different than what I’m used to, but it ended up being fine. Considered pushing deads a bit more, but figured this was what I needed to win the meet. Overall I am 2/3 happy with how yesterday went. Having the best training cycle of my life, came in with some pretty big goals. So a 5kg meet PR was a bit of a let down. The way bench and deadlift moved though, has me very excited for what’s to come when I can get my squat figured out. Picture One: June 6, 2019. My cup was empty and my journey into the Power Athlete Methodology had just begun. I was excited but also curious as I knew that there was more to the method than just banging heavy weights and sprinting. What would I find and how would it apply or change my practice as a PT and as a coach? Picture Two: September 20, 2020. 469 days had passed since the beginning of this journey. And this block of Texas steel that sits in my garage gym can tell a story that’s not easily summarized in an internet post. What I learned in the intervening days since June 2019 is that there is no divide between moving well and living well. For those of us teach and coach Movement, we have a responsibility to empower the people we care for inside and outside of the gym. That doesn’t mean you have to hold their hand. I’m really wondering how training will be a few months down the road. Assuming I don’t eat like a fat shit again (@phamismfit please hold my hand lmao) I should ideally be putting myself in a position for PR’s across SBD early next year. Sumo finally feels comfortable again, and that’s what I’ll be sticking with for my comp style. Yes, I mean that this time 😂 I took some time comparing my 617 opener from last March and the first 606 single from the other week, and I think I’m finally in a good spot considering I’m 10lbs lighter and clearly not peaked. The goal right now is just keeping my head up these last few weeks of cutting and approach regaining weight VERY slowly. After having time to settle back in at home and truly reflect on this meet as well as this prep I need to give credit where credit is due. As many know I don’t share much on social media about my life besides lifting, but life isn’t all about lifting. It’s a hobby and some will become greats and create a lifestyle out of it and for some lifting is an escape. Saying that I want to give a huge thank you to @beardedbrawn23 for helping me when I wanted to give up when a lift didn’t go right or my bench didn’t move as fast as I wanted it to. As well as reminding me lifting is nothing to ruin your day over. As well as structure my water cut to make weight, diet, program. Missing weight mentally screwed with me meet day focus but we came back finished! Don’t get me wrong I love to lift and hope I always will but with being such a mental lifter and not having the best self confidence he has helped me more than people know. None of us do this on our own. Even if we train alone there is always someone who listens to use bitch and moan. Someone who picks us back up and get back on track and motived to continue to push. Thank you to all my friends who were there every day for me during prep. Thank you to everyone who came to the meet as well as everyone who watched and wished me luck! The meet was originally scheduled in May, so I started prep in February. Then COVID hit and gyms closed, so I went a month without touching a barbell. Quarantine hit me like a damn freight train physically and mentally, but when everything opened back up, I packed my bags and went up to SBC and put my head down and got to work. Right when I felt like quitting, a smart man told me ‘it’s just something you do, you get in and put the work in whether you want to or not’ and that REALLY stuck. Bad days, good days, days you don’t eat anything because you work too much, days you don’t sleep because your mind keeps you up at night, doesn’t matter. This was such a weird experience because I usually HATE people watching me lift (which is why I never post my training). I hardly ask for spots, I don’t show training to anyone, I honestly think nobody watches me when I train either, but today I put my head down and zoned out the crowd, honestly the only time I heard anyone was after I locked out my last deadlift, then I heard EVERYONE 😂 - I had SO much freakin support today I almost got emotional, thank you to everyone who showed up today and watched me! Wenn das jeder macht, kann ich auch mal 😋 Die LM ist vorbei, ich fühl mich immernoch wie Brei...aber alles in allem bin ich zufrieden! Ich konnte mein Total um 35kg auf 480kg erhöhen und habe dabei auch das erste Mal auf einem Wettkampf das Gefühl gehabt endlich Kniebeugen machen zu können. 120 Kniebeugen 135 Bankdrücken 225 Kreuzheben Die Bank war diesmal leider sehr enttäuschend mit meinem bisher schwächsten Ergebnis überhaupt. Dafür konnte ich im Beugen mehr als erhofft auflegen und im Heben meine gesetzten Ziele sauber erfüllen. Danke insbesondere an @power.zwerg für die - wie immer - gute Betreuung und die oft notwendige Bremse, wenn ich es wieder zu eilig hatte! Außerdem war es wieder ein Riesenspaß mit dem #schmiedekraftsportverein das Wochenende zu verbringen! Immer wieder gern! My guy Cam competed this last weekend. He basically had a perfect day with some fat prs. Seeing you guys compete really makes me miss being able to coach at big meets and push barriers. Bench night went very well tonight. 545 and 565 to a 3 board, and finished off with a static hold at 685lb. Ive been working in a shirt for two years now, and still absolutely feel like a novice. We sure had a day yesterday huh. 2020 has been something. Was going to move across the country and uproot my life, last minute didnt and went in on a business venture and became co owner @pinnacleperformanceoh , hustled and managed to put on an amazing event for the Arnold, endured the covid shutdown with great members and great people, built the gym into a community of something more and something we know will need to expand, saw my people hit PRs and make moves in their lives, took on the state of Ohio through a cooperative effort between @tcass1776 myself, and 60 other gyms along with the constitutional law group, endured, adapted, persevered, and now achieved a lifetime goal of an All Time World Record. Something no person on the planet has ever done before. Not by age, not by federation, but by humanity. And I dunked that thing lol. Hell of a day. 822 squat, 507 bench, and a 677 deadlift to deal the deal. A PR total at 2006lb in sleeves and a wilks of 554.2. Cried a lot yesterday. Very happy with what Ive been able to do. And proud of how Ive done everything up to it. Now we just see where the future holds. Always in it. . . . Late recap with pics from @mvillere88 ! - - USPA North Shore Power Royale, didn’t go as planned but salvaged the day best I could! Squats went well 562 opener and 584 2nd, went 600 on my 3rd and lost my core and had some minor tightness show up in the hips and adductors on that. Told my boy @bigdiesel77 to take it. Moving into bench, not much to say here other than it was great for me. 3/3 with a 3rd attempt of 385lb and had some lbs left in the tank. Probably could’ve called for 391-396 but a 27lb meet pr isn’t too shabby for me on this trash lift! Deadlifts, I couldn’t have picked a better opener of 677. Moved solidly. Second of 700 moved much better but rookie mistake and not waiting long enough for down command cost me that. Called for 711 on my third to try and secure a small meet Pr. Went up smoothly and my right hand got caught on my quad and pulled the sucker open just as I locked out! Oh well. It will go down in January! Finished the day 1st in 90kg class with a 1648 total! Swole Cole made me earn this W for sure! Beat him by a small 2.5kg. He is a fantastic lifter himself! And I ended up taking home best lifter award to my surprise, as there were many great lifters like @philipmaranto , Swole Cole, and some new faces I don’t have on here! Words can’t describe how this first competition went. It has been a very long time since I felt these game time butterflies, and man does it feel good to be back. Some back training highlights from yesterday and a new product launch from @revive_md - T-bar rows are still one my all time favorite back movements be chest supported, free bar, overhand grip, v-bar grip or with the @primefitnessusa handles like you see here. I just connect with them well and that is important when choosing movements to help build a physique. - 1 of my two top sets here. Next set i went up 25 lbs, hit it for 10 reps then did a little rest pause where i added 3 and 2 total reps for 15 total. - I did a few things after and then finished out the night with rack pulls. Im not doing them as I would for powerlifting. I’m specifically trying to hinge more and allow my back to work hard to move the weight. Instead of being extremely vertical and efficient from point A to B. Few takeaways on technique. I learned of two concepts known as rooting and stacking. I’ll probably butcher the explanations but here’s the gist I gathered. Rooting is footwork. Which is key because because squatting requires feet, strong feet well rooted to the floor for movement that is safe and efficient. Working on it. Stacking is just like it sounds. For squats imagine, it’s obvious once you think on it, that your feet, ankles, knees and hips are separate parts of the same column. You stack them to be at your strongest. He spends most of his time at the Agape Free Clinic in Downtown Dallas and keeping up with his piano skills. A fun fact about him is that he can sleep anywhere. His goals for SMP are chasing a 700+ squat (American Record if possible) , 450 bench, 700 deadlift, and just pushing himself become a stronger person in general. This past weekend I had two of my lifters compete at the @usaplvirginia Holiday Havoc, and I am extremely proud with both my lifters’ outcomes - @cleftychin had a great meet, considering all variables that came into play come the last three weeks of prep. Dec 15, 2018, a date that has repeated thousands of times in my head. The comeback meet, but also my debut in @usaplvirginia, what a long road it’s been. An 8/9 showing with a second place finish in the 83kg class that was stacked with plenty of young savages was not the result I had in my head and frankly it still hasn’t set in. Eight or so months ago I wasn’t able to do simple things like tie my shoes without excruciating pain in my hip let alone squat a bar or deadlift. There were moments I sat around watching my friends lift @theshopgym thinking to myself, “man, I’ll never get to enjoy this again like they are.”, but here we are: Squat - 192.5kg Meet PR Bench - 132.5kg Meet PR Deadlift - 230kg Meet PR 555kg total @ 80.2kg @cdickson3245, the man with the plan. The guy who I put on the spot at the very last minute for this meet. You took me in when I needed help the most and you never doubted me. I know this may be a relatively common sense statement but a press should be the most deliberate movement you do in the gym. A push is single channeled act of unadulterated aggression. Think about the practical usage of a push.. its to put distance between you and a threat.. so why would you treat your bench press any different. Learn to be deliberately aggressive with your press.. push yourself away create space in the most explosive way possible. Heavy dumbbells heavy close grip movements shit that will scare you a bit. Grab those 100s even if you can do 2 reps learn to press with speed, violence and momentum.. most people who struggle with bench 1. Lack pressing power just pure explosive potential or 2. Stability lack of coordination and control which breeds apprehensive tendencies and or fear Do that and a large bench will follow. Worked on bar placement and grip width on squats and ended up moving my grip in a little bit and moving the bar up on my back just a little bit and it made a world of difference. I actually made it through straight bar squats without arm pain for the first time in a looooong time. Finally have the confidence in my squat that I needed! Deadlifts are feeling amazing. Technique is on point and the weight is flying! 534.6 is just 16.6lbs under my opener and it’s moving great. Can’t wait to put it all together! . Man... what a year it’s been! I remember when @ct_whitney told me he was looking at potentially opening a gym in my town of Conshohocken. I was so hyped to have my coach and a REAL powerlifting gym in my neck of the woods. Once he got the location, I wanted to volunteer all the spare time I had to help bring this place to life. Some absolutely incredible late night training sessions in 90 degree heat, no lights, no AC, 1 rogue rack, and about 4 gym floor mats on the ground. There was no other place I wanted to be. • • • 1 year later and Collin has turned this place into a home for so many likeminded people. Ask anyone who comes here, they will all agree, it’s not the equipment that makes the gym, it’s the COMMUNITY.
