Top 4 Tips for Maintaining Muscle During Fat Loss 1. Avoid An Excessive Energy Deficit After a point, a greater energy deficit does not equal faster fat loss. There is a maximum rate at which your body can free up and oxidize stored fatty acids. An excessive deficit increases the risk and likelihood of losing muscle mass and a number of other negative consequences for overall health. 2. Match Macros to Training the most commonly underused macronutrient when people want to lose fat is often carbohydrates. you need to have sufficient carbohydrates to replenish glycogen to support training performance and recovery. insufficient carbohydrates for the stimulus can increase unnecessary stress on your body which can slow down recovery and progress. 3. Avoid Excessive Mechanical Damage When you’re in an energy deficit is not an ideal time to try to create a lot of mechanical damage to muscle tissue as it is a highly energy demanding stress to recover from. excessive breakdown of muscle tissue from training with insufficient nutrients to recover and repair that damage is a pretty good way to ensure you’re going to be chipping away at lean body mass at a faster rate. 4. Avoid Junk Volume If you’re not familiar with the definition of junk volume, please check out the article and video on the @n1.training site Once you’ve achieved the goal stimulus of the workout, adding more “work” is just added stress for your body to recover from and will take longer. When training for fat loss, ideally we want our training frequency to be as high as possible. There is a full video on this posted on the @n1.training site. It’s been way too long since I’ve done regular deadlifts! 💞 We hit this workout at 60-70% to kick off our official deloading week, and week #1 of @bretcontreras1 advanced glute program. While BC has progressed to phase 3 of its restart plan, there are still many restrictions in place that prevent us from providing a safe atmosphere for a powerlifting competition that follows provincial guidance. Ive been following a body building diet for a while to try and lose weight. I dropped a bit if weight, but my training has been average. I am not really sure what I need to change to help with my training. Having focussed on both body building and more strength/power based sports like strongman and rowing, I mapped out a bit of a comparison above to address this common question/scenario. Body building is a sport of aesthetics- how you look. Its a about building up as much lean mass as possible and systematically reducing fat mass to get as lean as possible for one day before presenting yourself on stage to be judged- subjectivity- in how you look. Its become increasingly popular to compete, and the dieting strategies range from total bro-science BS to smart evidence based approaches. Plenty of people achieve weight loss with the body building style of eating, and in some cases the approaches can also carry over into other sports quite well.
