Yesterday I competed in my first @usa_weightlifting local in person meet. My goal was to hit all my lifts and see how a meet is ran. It was such a fun time! Starting off the week reminding myself of this powerful statement... “The words that follow ‘I am...’ follow you..” That the attitude you have for yourself, towards a task, towards the day, and even a moment , good or bad, play a huge role on how the result will look like. Speak to yourself words that will build you up, make you grow, keep you taking strides forward... and that’s the direction you will follow. Know that you are not your negative thoughts The catalyst to all of our actions all start on our attitude, how we think of ourselves and how we speak to ourselves. Hurtful words hurt you, powerful words empower you- the best part is that we get to choose which way we want to go Just something that I needed to remind myself of this past week, and will probably need this again in a future. 📝 Athlete Insight (via @left_arm_strongbpi) 1️⃣ A back squat PR of 185lb!! 👏👏👏 2️⃣ How she uses a lifting strap to maximize limb usage and create a better back squat position ・・・ With being an adaptive athlete comes some trials and errors on figuring out what works for us. I know many people that have brachial plexus injury like myself their function/mobility can be more or less than someone else with the same injury especially if it’s from an accident vs birth. Anyway, here’s a video of the lifting strap I use for back squats. I have poor mobility on lifting my arm above my head and gripping is weak. Did you know ... • I once got a 37% on a physics exam • I dropped out of my first PhD program • I only had 3 people sign up for my first ever launch of the little Lyss method • I got a big grant rejected this year • It took me 4 tries to run my first 20 miler • I have missed approximately 8173 snatches this year • I still haven’t published a first author scientific paper • I fucked up royally on something in my first phd project • I lost data from $2000 of assays in my masters because I ordered the wrong ones THEN set the machine to the wrong wavelength • I am naturally a terrible writer • I only got 6 minutes of playing time total in college lacrosse THEN left the team • I once wrote a full ebook/program, only sold 5, then removed it a month later • I literally vomited in the middle of my ultra last weekend But all these things have forced me to reflect, pivot, and get honest with my self about 1) my goals 2) how all those things taught me important lessons and mostly 3) when those things are due to me & needing to check my own Shit/efforts. If we avoid failure, making mistakes, flopping, or missing the mark we avoid living. I don’t know about you guys — but I sure as hell rather try and fall forward than stay standing in the same place 🤟🏻 Because if you keep going long enough you realize — all those failures end up adding up to something bigger than you were even aiming for before. Back & biceps 💪🏼 This was my first time doing deadlifts I’m a looooong time. I was unsure of how much I’d be able to pull but was still able to do 225lbs 🥳. Tuesday’s top 5 tips to fat loss: 1. Calorie deficit: Ensure that you are expending more energy than you are consuming. To set yourself up for success here, a sustainable deficit is typically 10-20% taken from maintenance calories. 2. Monitor your NEAT: Non-exercise activity thermogenesis is everything that isn’t your structured exercise routine. Everything OUTSIDE of the gym is included here: Your steps, brushing your teeth, doing the dishes, going shopping, fidgeting, using a standing desk etc. 3. RECOVERY: To get your body into parasympathetic mode, AKA: rest and recover to decrease stress hormones, we need to be balancing out stressors with de-stressors. Ensure you are getting 7+ hours of sleep, appropriate macronutrient distribution to facilitate recovery (yes this is important, especially on low calories), adequate hydration, 20 minutes of sunshine, and plenty of YOU time (or things that you find relaxing). 4. Appropriate training routine: Weight training is especially important while dieting to maintain muscle mass. When we diet, we are at an increased risk of losing hard earned muscle tissue which is what gives us that ‘toned’ look. To minimise muscle loss, strength training is recommended. It will also help preserve a higher metabolic rate, strength and healthy blood work profile. 5. CONSISTENCY: This is the most important of all. You can have the perfect calories, perfect food choices, perfect training routine and activity levels, but if you aren’t consistent with your diet, it’s all for nothing. Imagine if you only showed up to work Monday, but by Friday had quit? Not a very successful approach, and I don’t think your boss would appreciate it. Commit to your diet and be consistent, Then it’s about trusting the process. Having someone to keep you accountable here is key. A fat loss goal involves a transformation of your lifestyle. If you continue to do what you have always done, you will continue to get what you have always gotten. Você se Mata ou Morre ? Se Quebra em wods curtos ou desiste em wods longos. Não está sozinho. Sabe O que acontece? A resposta é : DEPENDE! Assunto complexo, vou citar duas principais causas: 1. Seu mindset, não está disposto a sofrer, não melhora no que é ruim pq foge disso. Não gosta de wods de 3 minutos, simplesmente não faz ele em 3 minutos. De forma inconsciente não dá 100% pq vai sofrer muito assim não evolui, “se matar de forma consciente é difícil. O mesmo em Wods longos, se abala pelo “self talk” negativo, o wod não acaba, se pergunta pq faz isso consigo, nessa “conversa” perde o foco e tem uma morte lenta, mais uma vez não quer sofrer... gradativamente vai desistindo. 2. A Outra Razão é fisiológica, você não tem um condicionamento amplo (GPP). Você ou seu coach ou ambos priorizaram uma via metabólica em detrimento da outra. Um CrossFitter deve ter a capacidade de “virar a chave”, virar rápido e sem perder performance. Deve seu corpo fazer muita força (ATP), também se mover com intensidade moderada (Glicogênio) e sustentar grandes tempos de treino ( oxidativo). Mais importante, alternar esses estímulos sem “sofrer”. Você pode ter uma limitação de Mindset ou fisiológica ou os dois. Se Coach deve transformar o seu desconforto em conforto, e achar um novo desconforto.... e repetir esse ciclo infinitamente 😅 Atletas de competição geralmente são mais expostos a essas fraquezas com treinos direcionados. Alunos regulares são expostos de forma mais suave a suas fraquezas e tem um horizonte maior para “se acomodar” onde não gosta. Quer evoluir? Esteja confortável com o desconfortável. Por Último, existem outros fatores que de forma geral estão relacionados ao gerenciamento do desconforto. Laaaa no começo quando eu comecei no crossfit eu abri uma janela pros meus treinos de LPO pq eu me apaixonei por aprender mais e mais sobre aquela modalidade. E ai o processo de aprimoramento é muito especial. Cada conquista, cada ensinamento, cada dificuldade. Video 1 - Eu retornando as atividades depois de um lesãozinha, e acertando meus muitos poucos 50kg de snatch Video 2 - já pré paranaense tentando transformar meu maior deficit de força que sempre foi o clean: com 62..65kg na barra. Eu lembro que na época ter um body weight snatch era algo excepcional haha, e eu era mto orgulhosa disso. 😋 Hoje eu uso o levantamento de peso pra muitas outras coisas como a melhora de força e potência pra transferência em outros esportes. Watching these videos give me a lot of hope on what i have planned for my future. It’s sometimes hard to see what my life would be like in a month from now, considering how this whole year has been going but i can’t dwell. Despite things pulling me back, i somehow find myself taking that giant leap forward to keep myself hopeful. I know my dad isn’t following me, so I’ll say this here lol. An hour drive from the airport made me miss him being around. I loved every moment of it, and i can’t believe how much i missed him being home. He is a hard working man, and he sometimes gets to realize how hard working i am also. He sees my success in this new career and lifestyle and i can’t wait to show him what I’m ready to do from now until the day i die. That being said, it’s nice to be able to take care of my little girl while my dad is gone. I’m starting to understand the responsibility of taking care of someone and it’s very rewarding. Old pic, new story. # Its been a long time since Ive been in a squat rack- over a year. When I moved to STL, I ended up at @steelplatefit, an amazing community with incredibly kind, badass, and extremely fit people (see @sparkman20 and @nic_84_hays) # At first, I felt just as comfortable as I did at my old gym. And then I started watching these incredibly strong people. # Somewhere along the line, I got afraid to take up space. I was afraid to ask for a space in the squat rack because I cant ever share a bar. I was too afraid to ask someone who was more able-bodied, who was stronger, who honestly, I felt deserved the gains more. (hello, internalized ableism!) # But tonight, I walked into a small class. There was room for me to lift in the rack. 50% of back squat max, 4 sets x10 along with other accessory work. The last time I tested a max back squat was at @proximalstrength @crossfitspringfield at 110 lbs. I hadnt squatted more than 35 lbs in a year. # 15 felt good so I moved to 35. Once 35 felt fluid, I moved to 45. Felt even better. Got to 55, and got stuck. I couldnt press the bar at that weight. I looked over at @a_abraham02 and shook my head. He offered to put the bar on me and spot me- wed see how it went. # It was smooth as butter. It felt like flying. It felt like the first day @jeremymhire had me do pushups and I felt like I COULD MOVE. # I was in my own way. Andrew was kind enough to remind me that I deserve to move too, and that I have every right to have access to equipment too. Big feels on my mind at the moment. After a tough spring and summer I was so happy that the travel restrictions between Switzerland and Finland got cancelled. I was happy I will get to travel to Finland in August when I have my holiday. Not only to see my family and friends after a long time but also to compete in a crossfit competition @turuntuomiopaiva. I was really excited for this, I would get to compete and ALL my family and friends would come and see me doing what I do the best. There is literally not much more that I could ask for. ❤️ Once the Games spot was taken away from me earlier this year I found a lot of comfort in having a competition in mind to prepare for. I love training but I also find it easier to push the limits day by day when you have a physical goal in mind –and for me it was this competition happening in my hometown. Unfortunately Covid-19 related travel restrictions got pulled back and it means I won’t be able to compete. I am in Finland with full health and negative corona tests but current recommendations are 14 days of quarantine post traveling. I am not risking others so quarantine it is. I am surprised how much this all made me feeling down. I know there is much bigger problems in the world, but this is my world and I am really disappointed I won’t be able to see everyone, compete against the best in Finland and show how hard I’ve worked this year despite all the struggles. I am sure the competition will be a blast and I wish good luck for everyone competing, I really wish I was there to throw down with you guys! CrossFit has been in my life for 11 years. There are times where it has been for pure enjoyment, times where it’s all about competition and other times where it’s sole purpose was for my mental health. As we come to our final few days in Noosa, I realise how much of a haven #cfwanno and @crossfitnoosa has been during this weird and stressful time of COVID limbo. Being here longer than planned has meant we got to spend more time with the fam but to also meet some great people who we can now call friends. I roughly lost about 4kgs in the last 7 days. Definitely not ideal, nor intended. Getting down was not just hard for me but those around me. 😅So thanks for putting up with me and sorry to my Yamasaki family, my Dignan family, my work colleagues, @cougarsweightliftingclub, stressing coach @angiewydall if I would make weight and mostly @brockdignan poor guy😬 He had to deal with me the most and he stayed beside me whilst I was in and out of the sauna for over 3hrs and basically carried me to Canberra😅 Without a doubt could not have done it without him. ❤ Ill try not to do this again😬😁😘 However all that being said, I need to make a change and Im excited to try to create a better relationship with food on my new adventure with Taylor @the_sportsdietitian . Ive never been very good at this with being in a sport driven by weight divisions. Next #AthleteSpotlight of the week goes to Henry (@el_hennywise)! He graduated in Dec 2019 with a BS in Molecular Biology and plans on Applying to medical school in 2021. He spends most of his time at the Agape Free Clinic in Downtown Dallas and keeping up with his piano skills. A fun fact about him is that he can sleep anywhere. His goals for SMP are chasing a 700+ squat (American Record if possible) , 450 bench, 700 deadlift, and just pushing himself become a stronger person in general. One year ago I competed at my first Olympic weightlifting competition! It has made me grow so much as a person and is something that I never thought I would do. Coach Casey has been one of the most impactful coaches I have ever had. He may have not taught me my first cartwheel or cast handstand but he taught me how to be strong; both inside and outside the gym. He introduced me to Olympic Weightlifting, taught me all the technique I know, pushed me to be better, and coached me in my first non-gymnastics competition. #Repost @strongpiglet with @get_repost ・・・ Yesterday I competed at #Romacup. I got 3/6 lifts. 74 kg snatch 92 kg Clean&jerk 166 kg total. _____ TLDNR: happy, but not satisfied! Thankful for all the support 😄 _____ Long text coming up: I started higher in my snatch than ever before - that was a HUGE mental win for me and I had a decent shot at 77 kg for a new competition max. The 92 kg Clean&jerk felt great. No shitting dog, so that was also a mental win! I tried 95 kg in my third attempt and I felt SO ready for it, but it crashed to bad on me! All in all a fine day! Tried for two new comp prs and ended just 1 kg shy of my best total! With 237 sinclair points weighting in at 55,1. In one month I will be at Malta competing for another Qualification event and Im crazy excited to hit bigger numbers 🔥. Link in bio This #stankface says it all for this first event at the @crossfitgames Friendly Fran got very unfriendly very fast 😅 This was a tough year for me and I have excuse to use this year for getting ready for the games but honestly with all the injuries aside I just wasn’t ready to compete this year and it showed with each workout and how my body was recasting, responding and recovering, I didn’t do enough with what I could do. I wanted this wod to be over the second it started. I was hurting the entire time and mentally defeated before even picking up the bar due to the fact that I hadn’t touched an 85LBS thruster in 4+ months. It was completely the wrong mindset to have and it showed the entire workout. I’m blessed to have made it through this weekend with every holding up and excited to really train this next year and fix my injuries but mostly my mindset going into workouts like this. Life’s not fair and everyone had a tough time getting ready this year for the games with or without injuries.
