My☝️USPA Meet 🔸Maryland State Tested Championship 🔘Highlight - just one . I set and then beat the national bench record for the 75kg Submaster. Also set the open Virginia record... along with a few other state records. My second record I’ve taken from @pugthegoat 😂 (funny bc he’s tiers above me or where I’ll ever get to). ▫️Squat: 363lb ▫️Bench: 358lb (5lb meet PR) ▫️Deadlift: 424lb (5lb meet PR) ▫️Total: 1147lb (39lb PR) 🔘Lowlights - everything else. I wasn’t prepared mentally and was a choad on the rest of my lifts. . . I’ve posted my last attempts of which I failed in them all, to motivate me to never stop getting better . The next time I am on the platform, I’ll hit those attempts with ease. 🔺Squat - got too amped up and sank it too low where I lost balance. 🔺Bench (actually 369lb) - I got impatient and lifted my butt off the bench. Also somewhat herky jerkied the bar. 🔺Deadlift- somehow I forgot how to lockout. Failed my 2nd lift at lockout too. 🤼UPSA vs USAPL ▫️USPA 24 hr weigh-in is such a godsend. It takes off the early morning stress and lets me focus on recomping for the meet. Plus, there’s a huge difference for me in terms of getting to 165lbs compared to 163 since I usually sit around 168lbs. ▫️Being an outdoor meet, the atmosphere at the USPA meet was already more relaxed and the lifters seemed more at ease. USAPL has a faster pace and a more elaborate production. ▫️Both associations hold enjoyable meets, but for purposes of personal goals and achievements I’d go back to USPA and for a competitive standard and relative strength goals against your peers I’d compete in the USAPL. ✌🏽Thats all for now and I probably will take a longer hiatus to really improve on my numbers before I decide to compete again whether it be USPA or USAPL. Ive been crapping the bed on deads of this block for some reason, but my last 2 sets felt a bit more in sync today. 90% is just mental ques from lack of reps for several months. For now, my next meet is scheduled for June 20th in Kansas City! Up until then Ill do these week in review posts to show what training looks like until then. Hopefully Ill be able to highlight some improvements during that time along with contributing cues and strategies. This past week was the first week back to a heavy strength block. The past two blocks were ramping up into this style of training using lighter weights. Until earlier this year I spent too much time on either end of the intensity spectrum. Months on end chasing numbers, followed by months of hypertrophy work that was just too light. I know I made progress through that time, but it definitely feels like I was spinning my wheels. Nothing wrong with experimenting to find out whats right for your training, but Im ready to get this ball rolling. Dec 15, 2018, a date that has repeated thousands of times in my head. The comeback meet, but also my debut in @usaplvirginia, what a long road it’s been. An 8/9 showing with a second place finish in the 83kg class that was stacked with plenty of young savages was not the result I had in my head and frankly it still hasn’t set in. Eight or so months ago I wasn’t able to do simple things like tie my shoes without excruciating pain in my hip let alone squat a bar or deadlift. There were moments I sat around watching my friends lift @theshopgym thinking to myself, “man, I’ll never get to enjoy this again like they are.”, but here we are: Squat - 192.5kg Meet PR Bench - 132.5kg Meet PR Deadlift - 230kg Meet PR 555kg total @ 80.2kg @cdickson3245, the man with the plan. The guy who I put on the spot at the very last minute for this meet. You took me in when I needed help the most and you never doubted me. It’s NOT Giving Up 🏳️ Although my rehab process for whatever’s going on with my left hip and hamstring has been on track, I experienced a setback this past week. I had a sudden lateral movement at the bottom of a light competition style squat, which reverted me back to a day one pain experience. At this point, I am not in a position to hit a PR total in 4 weeks, and I’m going to pass on attempting to push through this in time for meet day. PR’ing my total is the only thing I’m interested in doing when I compete. If I choose to step on the platform, it’s because I truly believe I’m in a position to hit PR’s. I acknowledge that competing should be about a lot more than chasing numbers. But for me on a personal level, and at this phase in my competitive career, I’m just fine with continuing to train if I’m not in a position to hit the weights that I want to hit. So what’s next? I’m just chalking this experience up to being typical of the year 2020 and moving on. I’m going to continue to train lower body with variations that don’t aggravate the affected area. Close stance squats, single leg work, and conventional deadlifts seem to be very tolerable. And most importantly, I’m going to focus on controlling the controllables. Focus on doing what I can do versus what I can’t do, and not continuously acknowledging temporary limitations. This just leads to unnecessary, self-imposed, long term physical restriction due to mismanaging our internal narratives. Managing the noise that’s going on between our ears is the difference between believing setbacks are a part of the game and having positive outcomes, and taking setbacks personally and getting emotionally hung up on them - which in turn gets us physically hung up on them. Lifting weights becomes an emotional journey when you become truly invested into it. We need to be in touch with our emotions. But we cannot let our emotions overly control how we apply ourselves and how we execute our mission. Showdown 2020 recap: Quick version: 3/3 on squats! ✅ 738 for a platform PR! 2/3 bench ✅ 424 (PR) ❌440 0/3 deads ❌727 for a weird lockout cuz I just forgot how to deadlift I guess 😂 ❌766. I hopped up because I’ve done reps at 766 and I felt like it’d be safe. But tore my whole hand off at lockout which ended the day. 🤷‍♂️ Long version: I honestly didn’t have much expectation coming into this meet. I started off prep on fire. The last 4 weeks of prep I tweaked my knee and it threw me for a whirlwind. I wasn’t squatting well, i lost my confidence on my deadlift and I was a bit frustrated. But I was healthy by the end, and I decided to give it a go. 🔴 I ended up bombing out on deadlifts which was a little frustrating but I wouldn’t change a thing about this meet. 👉I haven’t had this much fun at a meet in a long time and it brought me back to why I started doing this in the first place. I had a chance to see and meet people I’ve only known on social media and I was not disappointed. Everyone was amazing and quick to offer advice and support and I think this was exactly what I needed to get to another level of competitiveness in the sport. Days like today are why Strength Training has been an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT part of my life 🦍 After acclimating to school and getting into a good routine of eating and staying hydrated I came into the gym feeling great. My goal for every session is to become a better lifter. With that said, I decided to go with a little reverse band Squat in wraps. And as I warmed up everything felt great so we worked up to a top set of 725! This is the most I’ve EVER had on my back. It felt amazing to push the mental barrier of actually putting that weight on my shoulders and felt even better to conquer the challenge when I could have stopped at 675. And to add icing to the cake I FUCKING BURIED IT 🦍 I’m also at the lightest I’ve been in maybe 2 years. Down 19 from my prep weight and 12 since I moved here 2 months ago. So it really shows something about being lighter and healthier instead of a big piece of shit. 🦍 Wraps have been quite the experiment and @frankdaddy29 has been helping me figure out the perfect self wrap with his 3m FD Chokers. Single leg exercises are often a staple in the programs of athletes, competitive lifters, and people who just exercise for fun, HOWEVER, many people dont know how to program them properly What we must realize is that whenever you make an exercise LESS stable (ie when training with less contact with the floor, as is the case during unilateral training), we also DECREASE our ability to produce force in that situation On top of this, the different kinds of unilateral exercises lie on a spectrum of being inherently less stable to more stable For example, the Hatfield SSB split squat that Im demonstrating in this video is a pretty damn stable single leg variation due to the multiple points of contact You could contrast this with a pistol squat, which is another quad-focused unilateral exercise, but which is much LESS stable because you only have one leg on the floor and no hand assist With the pistol squat, you are sacrificing some force production potential by increasing the stability demands, while with the Hatfield SSB split squat you have greater force production potential due to the lower stability demands Neither are right nor wrong by themselves, but the context in which theyre programmed is important If you are doing single leg work with the intent of improving strength, power, or muscular hypertrophy (like for competitive barbell athletes) you should likely opt for unilateral variations that have less stability demands (most of the time) because you can overload them to a greater extent, and therefore develop the physical qualities that you actually WANT to develop However, if your goals for unilateral work are more in line with balance, trunk control etc, you should likely opt for unilateral variations that have greater stability demands, as they will better help you develop those qualities Pistol squats, split squats, single leg RDLs, lunges and most other single leg exercises are GREAT exercises, but you need to make sure that you are programming them in a way that actually addresses your specific training goals Check out @resilienttraininglab for kickass programming that will get you RESULTS Use BARBELLDOC for 10% off @vivobarefoot - @thebarbelldoc on Instagram

Had another amazing meet today. I am very thankful that @sylva_sbc was my coach and he helped me grow in and out of the gym. I am also very thankful for my family at forge. Since I made the decision not to do this February meet, gonna switch gears from meet prep back into offseason programming. When I first arrived at Forge following my prolonged strength training hiatus, I weighed 215 and struggled squatting over 315. Now I’m roughly 240 and stronger everyday. Growing up my parents didn’t enroll me into sports due to lack of funds and their fears of my asthma and eczema getting worse (it was pretty bad as a kid). Worked on bar placement and grip width on squats and ended up moving my grip in a little bit and moving the bar up on my back just a little bit and it made a world of difference. I actually made it through straight bar squats without arm pain for the first time in a looooong time. Finally have the confidence in my squat that I needed! Deadlifts are feeling amazing. #tbt to the last time I competed in powerlifting and one of the most pivotal moments in my coaching career . November 2016 @southbrooklynwc . About 2 weeks out, I unracked the bar for a set of squats and had pain shoot up my back and down my left leg. From then until about 2 weeks after the meet, it hurt to do everything from walking to sitting/standing, much less training. I was younger and very stubborn so I insisted on still showing up to the meet and taking some token attempts. Squatting and deadlifting felt miserable and my back seized up when I arched for bench. . I decided to take what I thought would just be a short hiatus to get myself moving better and I’d get back to the platform in no time. Instead, I found myself develop a deeper understanding of human movement and a healthier relationship with training and the role it fit in my life. . Besides my dated understanding of biomechanics, I’d allowed training to become an all-consuming endeavor. My life and sense of self-worth revolved around adding pounds to my total. This experience forced me to take a pause, reflect on some hard questions, and re-educate myself in many ways. Im grateful for the pain and struggle this led to, as I wouldn’t be the coach, partner, and person I am today without it. . 4 years later, I’m starting to feel the itch to step on the platform again, this time from a place of pure enjoyment and love for the process. - @coachsam_e on Instagram

Yesterday’s deadlifts were freaking awesome! Hit a little PR for a 5x5! Was super stoked! Deadlifts are as follows: . . 585x5x5 (set 5 video 1; set 1 video 2; set 3 video 3) 495x3x5 snatch grip (set 3 video 4) . . Was really stoked because this was the first time of hitting a 5x5 at this heavy of a weight. Usually do a 3x5 or a 6x3 but got all 25 reps pumped me up hence the face at the end of set 5. Def felt like my form is getting on point and I’m getting better with my starting position and head position. Just on some reps I was moving so fast that I was almost shrugging the bar. Need to fix that and need to keep my crappy right leg from getting on my toes when it gets fatigued. Other than that, I was pretty pumped with how things felt and how speedy they were! One of the misnomers about block work is that many think their classic lifts should be higher from the floor than that off the blocks. Love or hate them blocks are an amazing tool for athlete development. ⁣ ⁣ There are several reasons to use blocks when not in the competition preparation phase of training but my personal favorite(s) and the motivation behind today’s programming is twofold. ⁣ ⁣ 1️⃣ Removes the obstacle of pulling off the floor, ie.. pulling over the knees. This allows for athletes to hit the gas ⛽️ and accelerate immediately after the barbell separates from the blocks. Additionally since we are no longer concerned about transitioning over the knees the athlete can generally achieve closeness with little to no gap between the bar and the athlete’s quadricep. By minimizing the this gap we are bringing the barbell closer the athlete’s center of gravity, making the lift more efficient. Since the lift is more efficient the athlete can generally achieve higher numbers from blocks that the floor. We also sometimes use the blocks as a way to build confidence at higher levels of intensity. ⁣ ⁣ 2️⃣ Shortening the pull such as when you lift from the blocks, the range of motion is significantly less than that of from the floor. Due to this reduced range of motion the speed in which the athlete must react is dramatically increased. This shorter time span within the pull and change in timing allows for the athlete to adapt to a conditional and controlled change. One other aspect to point out with the shorter range of motion is that an athlete can generally do more volume from the blocks before they fatigue. I know this may be a relatively common sense statement but a press should be the most deliberate movement you do in the gym. A push is single channeled act of unadulterated aggression. Think about the practical usage of a push.. its to put distance between you and a threat.. so why would you treat your bench press any different. Learn to be deliberately aggressive with your press.. push yourself away create space in the most explosive way possible. Heavy dumbbells heavy close grip movements shit that will scare you a bit. Grab those 100s even if you can do 2 reps learn to press with speed, violence and momentum.. most people who struggle with bench 1. Lack pressing power just pure explosive potential or 2. Stability lack of coordination and control which breeds apprehensive tendencies and or fear Do that and a large bench will follow.
