The fastest 290kg/639lbs Iโve ever pulled followed by a 310kg/683lbs miss due to grip. It honestly felt effortless off the floor, but my left hand was almost completely on the smooth and grip started to give immediately. I shouldโve waited 5-10 minutes and went for it again but oh well. You are confusing action . Remember brother, not all action is created equal . But your brain does not know that . It feels good when you read a fitness post, maybe take a screenshot of the workout that your favorite fitness person posted about . But, nothing ever changes . Your brain thinks that just by watching a fitness trainer do the workouts and by you going to the gym, is enough to get results . But as you and I know, thatโs not how things work . This psychological phenomena is very similar to the concept of complaining . I remember after taking a test which was not as easy as I thought it would be . I felt so bad and angry and just charged up emotionally . I had every reason to pick up the book and make sure that did not happen again . Instead, I remember all of those charged up emotions went away when I saw my friend, Andrew . Andrew like to complain, a lot . So, I started complaining to him . Complaining made me feel so much better . And all of those emotions disappeared . Few days later, I realized that โish, I havenโt studied at all for the next quiz coming upโ . You get the point . we have to know how to use our emotions to take action . Complaining and watching fitness videos are the wrong actions for the 97% of you . Instead, the right action is to have a workout plan, have a meal plan, have the groceries and food options ready to go at home, have a punishment for yourself if you donโt follow through for next 3 days, and so on and so on . Athlete @jesszeaiter smashing out some chain Deadlifts! One of Jesss goals for her current training program is to increase her power and force production. One of the ways weve done this is chain Deadlifts. by adding chains to the bar, the weight increases slightly with each link that leaves the floor so for example off the floor the bar weight would be 100kg but by the time jess has locked out the weight in her hands is now closer to 120kg making the bar weight heavier and heavier the closer to lockout. Words canโt describe how this first competition went. It has been a very long time since I felt these game time butterflies, and man does it feel good to be back. Dynamic versus static and why position before power matters. Iโm hitting Saturdayโs session today since Iโll be at the Showdown Meet but caught this and thought Itโs very useful to demonstrate why position matters. First video I chose to try a dynamic start and since I get asked a lot why I went away from my dynamic sumo in favor of a static sumo this is why. With the load being anterior based, if I miss the position by even a minute amount, I get pulled forwards. Same weight (415lbs on both) and only 15 seconds apart. Missing position led to missing the rep be it rolled forwards and so did I. 15 seconds later starting static and establishing my best position it was an easy rep. Training shouldnโt just be about a loading stimulus, it should also be about creating a movement pattern. After having abdominal surgery earlier this year @laurensimpson started working with @thebodybuildingphysio to safely reintroduce lifting back into her program. The program begun with ensuring the movement patterns were correct without any load and safely increasing intensity each week. โฃ I DIDNโT FEEL CONFIDENT in MY BARBELL SQUATSโฃ โฃ One of my favorite quarantine past times early on was watching Youtube videos of one fitness industry figure known for his calisthenic workouts. 95% of his programs are bodyweight only, but one clip captured him talking about and then performing some very horribly executed barbell squats. It was a clear example of an expert falsely portraying authority in something that he had no actual mastery of.โฃ ๐คจ โฃ Fortunately, his audience was aware enough to recognize this was clearly NOT how to correctly and safely squat. They ripped him apart in the comments.โฃ โฃ โฃ โฃ Watching that video made me get honest with myself. Did I feel confident enough to film and post my own barbell squats? Nope. They felt uncomfortable, I wasnโt achieving the depth I desired and I wasnโt progressing. However, tailoring certain movements and slight tweaks can help improve the quality of your training . . SSB Front Squats: Hate front Squats or feel massive amounts of discomfort with them ? Try these. Its much more comfortable variation , and you dont need the mobility in the wrists and shoulders that is required for a traditional BB front Squats (*not that you should ignore those areas if they are tight). But this will help you reap the benefits of front squats-which are many- without having to take weeks or months to perfect your front rack. And if you are an experienced lifter looking to change up a key basic movement, the SSB Front Squat is worth a shot. . Romanin Deadlifts on the Pit Shark If you want a strong deadlift you need strong hamstrings. If you want strong hamstrings - that will help your deadlift-you need to work on hip extension based hamstring movements. The Romanian Deadlift along with the Stiff leg Deadlift are the bread and butter of Hamstring builders. However, RDL and SLDL with a Barbell can wreck your lower back, because of the load being in front of you. Pit Shark RDL changes that by putting the load behind you, and it also gives you the option of changing the attachment you hold. The V Bar is just my personal favorite, but you can use a straight bar, a cambered bar, or any other appropriate attachment. Make sure you get full hip extension on your Romanians - I did a poor job here because of the chain length . Novelty for the sake of novelty is misguided at best and dangerous at worst. Novelty to create better more effective movement and less pain is always good and inches you more and more towards optimal training. First day doing โheavyโ deadlifts. Iโve been cleared to add weight and go off how my nub feels. โข In the first video (no leg) I struggled with balance. My ankle isnโt as strong as it was before. Surgery plus inconsistencies with gym and routine have added up. The bar felt light and seemed like it was accelerating off the floor. Not 100% but a good start all things considered. โข Second video is with my leg on. It caught me by surprise because the bar felt heavier and seemed off in my hands. Low bar squats - 320x6 Speed deadlifts - 295x6 Very low volume workout today, just one set each of squats and deadlifts. 320 for 6 is a rep PR and I was about an 8RPE so I feel very good about that. For my deadlift accessory I just focused on pulling explosively while maintaining good tension. Yesterdayโs deadlifts were freaking awesome! Hit a little PR for a 5x5! Was super stoked! Deadlifts are as follows: . . 585x5x5 (set 5 video 1; set 1 video 2; set 3 video 3) 495x3x5 snatch grip (set 3 video 4) . . Was really stoked because this was the first time of hitting a 5x5 at this heavy of a weight. Usually do a 3x5 or a 6x3 but got all 25 reps pumped me up hence the face at the end of set 5. Def felt like my form is getting on point and Iโm getting better with my starting position and head position. Just on some reps I was moving so fast that I was almost shrugging the bar. Need to fix that and need to keep my crappy right leg from getting on my toes when it gets fatigued. Other than that, I was pretty pumped with how things felt and how speedy they were! Such a fun experience at Canadian Masters Competition on Sunday. Both my openers were competition PRs, which gives me confidence and motivation to keep growing and improving. I learned a lot from this competition. It is a game of millimeters. My 3rd Snatch was right there, and my third CJ felt good, but received two reds. In the end finished with 97+107. Even though I had higher expectations I am still quite happy with this and feel there is so much room to improve. A big thank you to @me_beauchemin for keeping me calm, and focused, and coaching me through my nerves. And another big thank you to @londonweightlifting coaches and team for the continued support. For now, my next meet is scheduled for June 20th in Kansas City! Up until then Ill do these week in review posts to show what training looks like until then. Hopefully Ill be able to highlight some improvements during that time along with contributing cues and strategies. This past week was the first week back to a heavy strength block. The past two blocks were ramping up into this style of training using lighter weights. Until earlier this year I spent too much time on either end of the intensity spectrum. Months on end chasing numbers, followed by months of hypertrophy work that was just too light. I know I made progress through that time, but it definitely feels like I was spinning my wheels.
