A few years ago I decided I needed to make some big changes. With a big push and lots of support from my friends and family I quit my job and started working as a full-time illustrator and surface pattern designer. It’s definitely been challenging but I look forward to seeing where it will take me. . A little bit about me... I live in Salt Lake City, Utah with my husband and our dog/cat family. I enjoy spending time in my garden growing a variety of flowers I use to inspire my work. (You can see pictures in my garden stories) I am a dog lover or some would say a crazy dog lady. I find so much inspiration traveling and have been fortunate to be able to travel a lot. I’ve been to more places outside of the U.S. than in it which I will hopefully change since there are so many beautiful places here as well. . I originally studied Interior Design and worked in the industry for about 8 years but I always had a passion for art and textiles. When the perfect opportunity came for me to go back to school to study Visual Arts & Graphic Design I didn’t hesitate. From that I took a job working in the scrapbooking industry where I gained a ton of experience creating patterns and product design. I loved creating paper collections but ultimately it wasn’t what I had wanted to do long-term. . I love working with a variety of brands to design patterns for their products while still being able to work on my own designs. I recently just launched my first stationary collection this year and already have so many ideas of where that will go. A few of my favorite projects this year have been working with @thefoggydog designing patterns for cute dog bandanas and accessories. @sondeflor designing detailed florals for their gorgeous linen dresses and designing fabric collections for @cloud9fabrics that feature a few of my favorite florals. . 📷: @clarajonesphotography The memory of what it took to get this picture always makes me laugh. 🦟💛😂 - @cassidydemkov on Instagram

I know this isn’t the @lyan.cub that’s closing - it was the one we opened and it’s come a very long way through some very talented people that I never got to meet (god damn Australia is really far away) but I was / am so proud to have been part of that team that took it from the opening night, the trial weeks with friends and family, the dishes and drinks that worked and didn’t and the nights everything finally started to feel like it was coming together. I still can’t look at thyme without remembering the hours @jurgis_mer made me pick the tiny leaves off or yellow furniture without recalling the way our sweaty customers stained the benches with their leather and denim. Mostly I think of what @mrlyan and @mcmasterchef can do between them and what they’ve both gone on to do - absolute geniuses. Cub was awesome - but I know there’s more to come from you both. It’s widely accepted that the restaurant industry is built on the backs of cooks who can rarely afford to eat at the restaurants in which they work. As a young cook, eager to find mentors, I willingly gave my back and my bones to work alongside great chefs and learn as much as I could. In one such kitchen, I was cooking for two dining rooms simultaneously: one serving an elaborate tasting menu and another offering “elevated” bar food. At any one point I could be plating a delicate poached lobster with gnocchi and braised gem lettuce and, at the same time, a burger with the most delicious crispy fries cooked in duck fat. It was stressful, high volume, and it beat me up. At the end of each service, I was drained. But, inevitably, there were always a few misordered and partially cooked burger patties hanging around from service. I’d fire them up, toast off a few buns, dress them in salsa verde and mayo, and share them with the others. We’d stand there, our eyes and faces glazed over, running on fumes and coffee. In those moments, we felt like royalty. Grease stains, cuts and burns, no matter! With those burgers in hand we could have been anyone, anywhere. The older I get (and I am getting old), the more I have grown to appreciate simple things done well. With care. Burgers are personal… as in, we all like them a little different. I like them with salsa verde, but you may not. You might like tomato, but I don’t. That’s why I’m really stoked about the @AmericanoBombay Burger Bar. Carla Vinatea es la chef de Melí Meló (@melimelofusionperuana ), un restaurante de cocina peruana fusión en Guatemala. La chef peruana de Lima se ha inspirado en su región cercana al mar donde el olor a la marea es fuerte y constante 🌊🌊. Desde pequeña aprendió a limpiar pescado y mariscos, después de ir al puerto a comprar pescados con su papá. Cuando salió del colegio decidió convertirse en cocinera; sin embargo, su papá no estaba de acuerdo con ella, y por lo tanto cursó una carrera en ingeniería pesquera. No obstante, nunca ejerció ya que tuvo que emigrar a Paraguay. En Paraguay sentía nostalgia por el mar, ya que en aquel lugar lo más popular eran los asados. Para conseguir mariscos, había que ir al mercado coreano. En una de sus visitas al mercado coreano, logró conseguir almejas para hacerlas a la chalaca. Poco después se trasladó a Guatemala, donde estudió cocina y fundó su restaurante Melí Meló. I had dreamed of opening a restaurant since childhood, and no one—not family, not friends, not NOBODY—had the good sense to tell me how hard it was actually going to be. I had been holding on to that dream all throughout my career. It got me through the tough days, it gave me a goal to work towards. Here, upon the realization of my career-long ambitions, I was beginning to doubt myself and question everything I had worked so hard to achieve.⠀ ⠀ In those moments, I finally understood what the real dream had been all along: to have someone to share it all with. @mallyeka - my partner in every way. @Americanobombay is not the realization of a child’s fantasy. I have to say one of my favourite moments from this season of @foodnetworkca #TopChefCanada was restaurant wars. We were able to create cohesion through food whilst displaying our own personal culinary identity, culture and heritage. In hospitality women (especially of colour) and black & indigenous males are constantly marginalized and this particular moment always serves me as a constant reminder to what allyship should look like in our industry. Everyone had a voice in the decision making, there were no egos, biases or preconceived notions of what “Canadian food” should look like. Meet the team at @theshuckery, a seafood restaurant and oyster bar in Petaluma, CA. 🦪🦞🐟⠀ ⠀ Like many others, the pandemic forced co-owner Jazmine Lalicker to operate in an entirely new world. As a dine-in only restaurant since 2016, The Shuckery had to shift fast to delivery and takeout during COVID to keep their business afloat. when I was in high school (yep, that early) I noticed something very distinct about myself. if I wasnt actively involved in creating something- whether acting in a play, directing a play, writing something, or making a painting, I very quickly got angsty, depressive (maybe actually depressed), restless and my self-esteem took a hit. the minute I started making art again, those feelings went away. If Id stop again, theyd come back again, and then disappear when I picked the art back up. my takeaway from this was not that there was something wrong with me. my takeaway was that Im an artist by nature, and therefore I actually need to be making art regularly in order to be happy. when I was young, and still wondering if I was really an artist (whatever that means) I figured out that was actually one of the criteria--that you *need* to do it in order to keep the balance. I made my art my job, so usually I have plenty of art I have to make to keep the lights on & I dont have to worry about it much anymore. but I still encounter this sometimes when my teaching/making balance is off, or Ive been immersed in the more producorial/administrative aspects of making work. oh. I feel crappy. sit down at the computer and write something. ah, thats better. balance restored. I was just talking about this with a genius artist the other day, who was lamenting that they only felt truly balanced when they were creating every day. and I was like: thats not something to lament, thats something to be proud of--it means being a creator is your nature, and OF COURSE you are going to feel off if youre not creating every day. we feel good when we fulfill our purpose. we feel kinda crappy when we dont. thats not because theres anything wrong with us; its because the universe is reminding us we have work we were put here to do. if you feel off when youre creatively idle, pay attention to what happens when you rev the engines. immediately feel better? that might be a sign that youre an artist by nature. then discipline stops being about being good or bad and becomes about keeping yourself balanced by practicing the thing you were put here to do. #makeyourwork - @jessicacblank on Instagram

【Story behind the development of new stylish steak knives that has been delivered to the restaurant De Librije】 After a year and a half of repeated improvements to the new items, this completely new type of handcrafted steak knives were finally completed! It was a big challenge for us to realize this project for creating new model of steak knife that De Librije, the three-star restaurant in Zwolle Netherlands, gave us the production request, through close cooperation and support with our distributor Slijperij J. M. Van Rangelrooij. This is a limited edition steak knife for De Librije, with a simple yet sophisticated design. The blade features a high-quality ATS-314 Stainless Steel core, clad in 63 Layers Damascus Stainless Steel, giving it fantastic cutting feel. The beautifully polished handle brings comfortable grip feeling as well. Using our traditional forging techniques, we have successfully created the ultimate steak knife with its entire surface from blade to handle having beautiful Damascus patterns on it. It is a great honor for us that Owner/Chef of De Librije Jonnie Boer and his wife/business partner Therese are very much pleased with the completed steak knives. We began dreaming of creating a restaurant together when we first met and fell in love cooking at Craigie Street Bistrot. Since then our adventures have taken us to two seasons on Nantucket, a European sabbatical working in Michelin starred restaurants and a rustic goat farm, learning from the best in NYC at Le Bernardin and Gramercy Tavern, and then finally returning home to Boston to run the kitchens of Coppa and Toro. O Top Chef Brasil continua, mas para mim foi a última vez naquela cozinha. Um sentimento estranho porque a vontade era ficar até o final 🙃 Como disse, saí feliz pela trajetória, por ter sido eu mesmo o tempo todo. Conseguir aprender e trocar experiências com ética e alegria, apesar das dificuldades do confinamento, foi a maior vitória. Nesse último (meu) episódio, encaramos uma prova difícil e inédita que, apesar de ter perdido, adorei fazer. Mandioquinha é algo bem brasileiro e não faz parte das minhas raízes, um desafio a mais além da comunicação à distância. Na prova final, me senti muito bem comigo. Estava confiante porque fiz receitas de família, adaptadas para que tivessem esse toque #topchefbrasil. Usei referências aprendidas no Brasil e apliquei um pouco da minha admiração pela culinária oriental. Entre tantos ingredientes, o missô não brilhou, algo que faz parte do dia a dia da cozinha. Mas no programa não há segunda chance para ajustar. As palavras dos jurados, que não cabiam no programa editado, me confortaram e mostraram que o caminho que escolhi, quando deixei a Química (após o doutorado) para seguir entre as panelas, é mesmo sem volta. We were thrilled to work with the team from SAHMRI last week to help host their ‘The Cook and Chief’ event, streamed live from our Main Kitchen. Focused on The Maggie Beer Foundation’s mission to educate people on nutrition for the aged, this special event saw renowned SA chef @maggie_beer (The Cook) and South Australia’s Chief Scientist, Professor Caroline McMillen (The Chief) team up to lead a ‘virtual’ cooking demonstration on how to prepare soft polenta with mushrooms. FRILU will be reopening with a different concept that is more accessible yet maintains the same quality and standards as before.
