Years ago, we were committed to celebrate the Indonesian Independent Day with giving a special day to our nearly ocean. This year, we celebrated it in a silent due to pandemic condition in Indonesia. No ceremony, no games with the staff, No hingar-bingar. But we still wanted to give something to mother ocean. So we came up with an idea to do underwater clean up in our LATC House Reef with very few people. We were pretty happy because there was not so many plastic bag like before but we found a quite big kite that stuck on the coral table, and a loooong fishing line that tangled on the planted corals. We hope next year, our ocean will has less and lesser plastic litters and also crossing finger this pandemic could be end soon so we can get back to the absolute normal life. Amen . . AVOCADOS VS ELEPHANTS:⠀ How an avocado farm could be the catalyst that leads to⠀ the demise of the Amboseli ecosystem⠀ ⠀ There had been no warning of what was to come. The bulldozers wasted no time, quickly laying waste to 180 acres of precious, very finite amount of wildlife habitat.⠀ ⠀ The reason? Avocados. ⠀ ⠀ The place? A community conservancy in the Kimana wildlife corridor, through which elephants and other animals move between Amboseli National Park and the Tsavo landscape. ⠀ ⠀ This farm was approved in an area that is fundamentally important to Amboseli’s wildlife populations, and is basically an invitation to developers to proceed with the destruction of Amboseli’s remaining natural habitats. This was an act far more consequential than any poacher pulling a trigger: the further loss of natural space to human activities.⠀ ⠀ Amboseli’s elephants are the basis for an ecotourism industry that supports thousands of jobs and generates tens of millions of dollars, all of this ultimately at risk for the sake of the foreign demand for avocados and other produce. All of which could be grown in any other number of other areas of Kenya without critical ecological value.⠀ ⠀ Local communities were the first to object to the farm, but the outcry spread quickly. Following input from a number of stakeholders, as well as evidence of the importance of this wildlife corridor, Kenya’s National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has since issued a letter of intent to revoke the farm’s license.⠀ ⠀ This is a huge show of commitment by the Kenyan government to protecting its natural resources, and Big Life thanks the Ministry of Environment and Forestry and NEMA, particularly the Cabinet Secretary and Director General.⠀ ⠀ However, the avocado farm’s owners have 10 days from September 18 to show cause as to why their license should not be revoked, and there may be a protracted legal battle ahead. ⠀ ⠀ Meanwhile, Big Life and others in the ecosystem applaud the choice that has been made, one for the continued survival of the unique, UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that is the Amboseli ecoystem. ⠀ #amboseli #ecosystem - @biglifeafrica on Instagram

Conditions at Blue Heron Bridge could not have been better this Tuesday! 🤩 Val and Lewis enjoyed gorgeous visibility even an hour after high tide as they explored the site with Dive Guide Julie. 💙 With all the critters we saw, we didn’t want to leave! Він розташований на південно-західній частині однойменного острова 🏝 Зараз це місце входить до території Азово-Сиваського національного природного парку. ⠀ Заснований маяк був ще в 1878 році іноземними майстрами для обслуговування Генічеського порту. Але почав повноцінно діяти тільки в 1882 році. Його висота сягала 24,7 метра 🗼 У той час його оптичне обладнання забезпечувало видимість до 8 миль. В роки Другої світової війни маяк був зруйнований. ⠀⠀⠀ Нова споруда, яка мала висоту 30 метрів, була побудована у вигляді восьмигранної вежі в 1957 році. А в 1984 році її модернізували та встановили нове світлооптичне приладдя. The latest deployed cluster in our House Reef! After all of the structures have been dropped on the sea bed from the raft, the divers will arrange them based on the design plan. This time we only made Roti Buaya structures, so we set them in a stacked cluster. This will provide more space for fish to hide in. This kind of cluster design can also fit into a narrow area. Last but not least is the planting of propagated corals on the top of the Roti Buaya. These corals will encourage the floating natural baby corals (planulae) to settle and grow on the structure. LArbre de Vie (Shajarat-al-Hayat) à Bahreïn est un Prosopis cineraria de 9,75 mètres de haut qui a plus de 400 ans. Il se trouve sur une colline dans une zone aride du désert dArabie, à 2 kilomètres de Jebel Dukhan ( la montagne de fumée) le point culminant de Bahreïn, et à 40 kilomètres de Manama, sa capitale. Larbre est abondamment couvert de feuilles vertes. La résine jaune est utilisée pour fabriquer des bougies, des aromates et de la gomme; les haricots sont transformés en farine, confiture et vin. Il nest pas certain comment larbre survit. Bahreïn a peu ou pas de pluie tout au long de lannée. Ses racines ont 50 mètres de profondeur, ce qui peut être suffisant pour atteindre leau. Dautres disent que larbre a appris à extraire lhumidité des grains de sable. Certains affirment que larbre est protégé par Enki, le dieu de leau dans la religion babylonienne et sumérienne. Dautres prétendent que larbre se trouve dans ce qui était autrefois le jardin dEden et quil a donc une source deau plus mystique. En 2009, larbre a été nominé pour être sur la liste “New7Wonders of Nature”, mais il na pas fini sur la liste. En octobre 2010, les archéologues ont trouvé des poteries de 500 ans et dautres objets à proximité de larbre. Larbre a été mentionné dans le film L.A. The gathering of ormers is now restricted to a number of ormering tides, from January 1 to April 30, which occur on the full or new moon and two days following that. No ormers may be taken from the beach that are under 80 mm in shell length. Gatherers are not allowed to wear wetsuits or even put their heads underwater. Have you ever looked in the mirror and noticed a new gray hair? Our bodies have ways of showing us changes, both large and small. On a larger scale, ecosystems function similarly. While the rivers of Glacier National Park are not exactly sprouting grey hairs, warmer temperatures are changing their appearance. Warmer streams seem to be increasing the spread of a type of freshwater algae named Didymosphenia geminata, commonly known as didymo, or “rock snot”. Why the unpleasant name, you ask? Didymo, although native to Glacier, can cause nuisance blooms that may inhibit the growth of other algae, change the appearance of rivers, decrease suitable habitat for spawning fish, and change stream chemistry. Pictured above growing on the riverbed, it also looks a little like snot! Scientists monitoring the growth of didymo in park streams seem to have found a parallel between warmer temperatures and increasing spread of didymo. This increased growth has been linked to warmer stream temperatures and earlier spring runoff from melting winter snowpack. Although didymo is a species of algae native to the area, its increased spread is an indicator of change. You can dye gray hairs, but you can’t stop aging. Up until now, with the exception of our post on Rooibos Tea, the plants discussed have been native to other regions. **Artemisia Herba Alba, or desert wormwood, grows wherever rocky areas of the Sahara Desert are found across the 10 countries* it spans. To thrive in such an environment, this plant has developed many excellent properties, some of which activate healing in the human body. When the aqueous extract of the leaves and bark are consumed, it helps to stabilize glucose levels making desert wormwood** a great companion for those looking to walk back a diabetes diagnosis. The Um El Faroud wreck in Malta⁠. Um El Faroud was a 10,000-ton Libyan-owned single screw motor tanker. On the 3rd of February 1995, a gas explosion during maintenance work at the dry docks in Valletta took the lives of 9 shipyard workers. Following the explosion in 1998, she was scuttled about 200m from the shore in Wied iz-Zurrieq as an attraction for divers. A lot of my beautiful ice photos have been graciously captured by my good friend Mark of @markyammine photography. Marks family is from Lebanon and some of his extended family have been directly affected by the terrible explosion last week. A few days ago his cousin was volunteering with the Lebanese Red Cross when she was shot by government forces near the site of the explosion. She is ok but this just goes to show how dire the situation is there. As a result of this and to try to help in any way, Mark is offering individual portrait sessions for $50 with all proceeds going to the Lebanese Red Cross.
