I remember as a kid walking into Australian Geographic stores and being amazed by all the incredible science-y toys there and wanting to leave with everything. Growing up, I learned the brand is much bigger than just a toy store and does a fantastic job of championing Australian stories many of us arent aware of – especially in wildlife conservation.⠀ ⠀ Im so thrilled I could contribute a story of my own to the Sept/Oct issue, on sale now, about how mans best friend has been enlisted to save Australias endangered animals. I learned a lot about our canine friends, their incredible potential in scientific research and some of the inspiring people working with them (plus I got to pat a few good doggos).⠀ ⠀ Shout out to Natalie Filmer and Madeleine De Gabriele at @zoosvictoria for your guidance and arranging behind the scenes access at Healesville Sanctuary and Dunkeld, experts David Williams, Naomi Hodgens, Dr La Toya Jamieson, Chris Hartnett and Marissa Parrott for your insights. A late one and one that inspires me a lot of peace - what better than bathing ellies at dusk ? It’s been a hell of a month, and i’m excited for a break from the lemons. Truly. I’ve not really been knowing what to post recently. My feed is always usually colourful and I feel it’s all blending in a little too much. My recent work in France and Sicily is very much relevant to the approach i have to conservation, always trying to reconcile man and nature, though perhaps it is not so obvious - it’ll be the object of my next article. Beauty and the appreciation of it is a quintessential human trait, one that seems to appease, reconcile and unite. It comes in all forms, the one we create - architecture, art, literature, etc - and the one we notice in our environment. Natural beauty only exists through human eyes, but how powerful is it to almost unanimously take for beautiful what is already laid out for us? Aesthetics are not really sufficient grounds to justify conservation (though that’s debatable) but are very much a step forward for spontaneous individual and therefore collective action. What do you - we - feel, in the face of beauty? I would have posted a shot that stayed with me from the ancient Greek temples of Selinunte in southwestern Sicily but my hard drive is currently somewhere lost on a plane. So the next newsletter will hopefully take you to timeless places with its words only; intertwining ancient Greece and nature preservation. And maybe images will pop up at some point. The otter crossing the channel suddenly stopped for a few seconds at that point - there it caught the smell of wolves, turned back and disappeared much faster than appeared. This image of a Chinstrap penguin has always been a powerful image to me. It was early season in Antarctica and the weather is oftentimes very brutal with cold temperatures and strong winds. Not very desirable circumstances, but just another day in the life of a penguin. When I walked up to this remote group of Chinstraps the wind was ripping with 35 knots in my back and heavy snow was flying over the ridge. The group was clearly hunkered down and had temporarily ceased their otherwise hectic behaviors. One Chinstrap penguin stood out facing the harsh elements and the gusty winds face on. He had a mind of his own, and took a different path. He dared to be different, and went against the odds. He made a clear statement of breaking with tradition and accepted behavior, he was his own man. He was my hero. We need more of this today. Keep standing up and raising your voice. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. I really can’t believe I ever got to go anywhere for work. Even when I was going places, it was with a sense a disbelief that anybody would send me anywhere to talk to people and write and put together stories that I hoped would matter. That feeling of wow and whoa and holy shit (all branches of gratitude) was always compounded with an additional sense of disbelief that perpetuates and makes travel a wonder: You can wake up in the morning in your own bed and be on the other side of the world by end of the day! That sort of thing never gets old. As of late, that strain of wonder has intensified. Travel: a miracle, a lucky blessing. Anyway, the nice and talented people @travelandleisure very kindly sent me to THE AZORES and the piece is in their August issue and now online and it’s the kind of story where a bacteria-obsessed scientist took me to the fabled mouth of hell and fed me geothermal cuisine and there were volcanoes and rainbows and towering hedges of hydrangeas that curled and ripped like waves — and there were warm, welcoming people who took the time to make sure I would understand the special kind of faith that runs trough their communities and through their islands. In the end, this is a story about eternity and about measuring and holding onto your beliefs. Thanks to @thecatarinamaia @_raisadeoliveira @marina__c__nunes for the guidance and generosity. Many wildlife imagemakers try to get as close to an animal as they can. Personally, I like to get as close as the animal feels comfortable with; not disrupting it. Sometimes, however, close can become too close, especially with polar bears. This young cub was very curious and kept on walking straight towards me. Not only are these cubs much stronger than their cuteness would suggest. Mummy dear was only a second away which could put my team and I in danger. Fortunately, little bear decided I wasn’t interesting enough and went back to relaxed mummy. TEC Fellow, Michael Maes work covers the polar regions, temperate waters and the tropics. This Western Barred BandiCUTE has been hanging around an artificial soak put in place by @aridrecovery to mitigate the impact of the ongoing #drought. The soak is designed to simulate a flood caused by heavy localised rain. This stimulates vegetation growth and overall production of the area, creating island refuges of resources and shelter. I never really realised how unique and amazing the #Bilby was until recently. Their strange long legs and toes, enormous ears, odd gait (quadrupedal bounding overstep as they call it) and derpy head make for an unorthodox animal. After reviewing these photos and watching one cross the road the other night I can see how people fall in love with this weirdo. In retrospect it pains me to think I’ve never seen their tracks or burrows in the red #Australian deserts I’ve been too. Bilbys were once found throughout most of interior Australia but are now restricted to small pockets in remote areas, islands and fenced off reserves. @aridrecovery and the @australianwildlifeconservancy a are doing their bit to keep this #species going in fenced off reserves whilst we learn how to control the plague of #feralcats. Fenced off reserves are not the final the answer, but they are a part of the solution. They provide researchers with the perfect study area, conserve genetic #diversity and essentially buy the Bilby and many other #threatenedspecies time while we come up with an answer for a problem we caused. #Canon 60D, 40mm 2.8, 2 x #Nikon SB28s, @camtraptions PIR V2 and wireless triggers. This photo was taken at and with the help of Arid Recovery. A feral free fenced off reserve in #outback #SouthAustralia. Despite knowing exactly where two #marsupials would be using a network of trail cameras and tracking them for a few afternoons, it took two weeks to capture this shot. La ruta transpantaneira une el municipio de Pocone con Porto Jofre en el estado de Mato Grosso. La mayor parte de su recorrido es de tierra y espero que este así mucho tiempo. Esta ruta esta atravesada por más de 122 pequeños cursos de agua y tiene sorpresas en cada uno de sus kilómetros. Una de esas sorpresas, fue encontrarnos con este fantástico animal que es el Oso Melero. Aquí se lo puede ver en su posición defensiva, parado sobre sus patas traseras, pero no lo estábamos molestando, al contario. Se encontraba aturdido o deshidratado en medio del camino. Vaya a saber que le estaría pasado. El calor era agobiante, le dimos un poco de agua en un recipiente y la bebió. Después de uno minutos lo ayudamos a salirse del camino y le deseamos buena suerte. Great news out of Tanzania. Elephant numbers have stabilized in a key landscape that was known for rampant poaching just a few years ago. This according to a massive wildlife survey by @TheWCS and Tanzania’s Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). . An estimated 20,145 elephants were recorded during the 20-day survey, which covered 29,855 square miles of the Katavi-Rukwa and Ruaha-Rungwa landscape and included parks, game reserves, and other protected and conservation areas. . Far fewer elephant carcasses were found compared to 2015 when the last survey took place, indicating that poaching is now being brought under control – though a few were still detected in some areas.
