Ive been thinking about all the kids and teachers getting back into school over the last couple weeks. My nieces start today. Usually Im back in Minnesota around this time of year and my favorite thing is to walk with them to their bus stop on the first day of school along with my sister, brother-in-law, and my parents – yeah, we are a super embarrassing family with maybe a bit too much love but they are young enough to still be down for it (I know thats not going to last much longer!). 🥦 In the midst of the keto and paleo diet revolution: I want to highlight this important fact. I personally am usually a meat and vegetables kind of person. Outside of pregnancy, I am naturally a paleo eater and mostly am in a metabolic state of nutritional ketosis. Pregnancy is a whole different ballgame, however and I’ve shifted my diet to adhere to what is healthiest and safest for baby. Low carbohydrate diets are not recommended during pregnancy and new 2020 research (swipe right 👉 👉 Daniels et. Al., 2020) highlights one of the many reasons why . . . 🧬 DNA methylation of placenta genes play a key role in neonatal development and are closely correlated to disease risk of baby. This study demonstrates that women who consumed adequate carbohydrates during pregnancy had better levels of DNA methylation. In order for DNA to activate it must methylate 🧬 🔬 . . . 💥 Of course we don’t want to load up on non-nutritional sweets as our source of carbohydrates (although very tempting, and sometimes certainly deserved for a treat!). Here are some of my favorite healthy fiber rich carbohydrates that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed throughout my pregnancy: 🍏 🍍 FRUIT! (I’ve had amazing cravings for all things citrus and pineapple), steel cut oatmeal, chia seed pudding, and I add 2 tablespoons of organic flax seed to all of the above and also to my morning whole-milk Greek yogurt as well. I recommend flax for a great source of fiber during pregnancy. NUTS! Go-tos to keep in the cabinet are Brazil nuts, walnuts, and sprouted almonds. Her positive energy and smile were contagious. In the midst of challenging multi year campaigns against toxic polluters, she continued to organize with her community year after year, meeting after meeting, hearing after hearing and what we remember about her the most is the dancing. Pandemic pastime... making movies with Micah! ❤️❤️❤️ He asked the other day if I thought our movies would be in theaters and millions of people would see them and I said, “well, buddy... I’ve just got a cell phone and a green screen to work with. We don’t have a budget or a crew or equipment or ya know- all the stuff you need to make big movies...” and he says, “well- we could give it a shot!” The kid’s got dreams- that’s for sure. We made a 9 minute short film for my dad’s 70th birthday last month using the green screen to place family members from three different states into the scenes together! It was a blast and finding this shared passion with him has been one of the greatest gifts this time has given us. ❤️❤️❤️ - @thesarahdrew on Instagram
