Heartfelt gratitude to @bicyclingmag and their leadership team for taking the leap as a leader in the cycling industry, changing the narrative and creating needed dialogue by adding our stories, our imaging and our SWAG to their massive platforms!   The general consensus within the responses to my published article depict cycling culture as not all-inclusive. “Unwelcoming, gear snobs, clickish, elitist, machist, earn your respect on the bike in order to be respected, standoffish”! These terms were also used as an alternative to explain why my experience as a new cyclist, five years ago, were possibly all of the above but NOT rooted in racism.   Since we can agree cycling is not all-embracing, for whatever reasons, can we also agree something is in fact inherently wrong with the culture? I had the unfortunate honor of experiencing this culture early on. Unfortunate because yes it was very disheartening. An honor, because the experience ignited a fire in me that burns to ensure no one else has to endure the unwelcoming gestures of elitist, gear snobs who uses bike speed as the only gauge for respect rather than issuing respect to all humans who pull up to ride with their group.   In our interview with @papa_keith at @thebeatmiami , @juswilliamz dubbed himself “Boss of the Ride”. In cycling the “Boss of the Ride”, unspoken, can set the speed, characteristics and tone of the group or ride because he/she is currently the strongest and fastest. Earning respect as the Boss aka “Boss Lady,” for me goes beyond the cycling stigma of pedaling the fastest, I make the calls! I make the calls to plan rides where no one is left behind and also rides where the fastest and strongest are positioned on the front to ensure the competitive drop ride remain fun, fast, and safe.  I make the calls to structure rides where the strongest are positioned strategically amongst the not so strong riders to ensure all flows well. Most importantly, I flex my Boss status to ensure respect is extended to ALL, regardless of skin color, gear, new or seasoned; by greeting, welcoming, and embracing when cyclists show up to pedal a Level Up ride or event. Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said the face of Utah’s capital, as well as several other cities on the Wasatch Front, was changed for a lifetime following a storm of hurricane-level winds earlier this week. We almost didn’t want to make this post because we found such a hidden gem this weekend!!! 🤫 The Jackson Scenic Trail, starting in Covington, VA was the perfect way to spend the day. 🚲 The 14 mile trail follows an old Chesapeake and Ohio rail bed along the Jackson River. On a beautiful weekend, there were hardly any other people! The finely crushed gravel and is well-suited for family bike rides, hikes, and even horseback riding. The trailhead is about 1hr 15 min from Roanoke, making it an easy day trip. We have been over the moon with most of Sedona’s signature annual events enlisting us for composting and zero waste support this event season. This was our first year having a zero waste station at @runsedona (after providing bins for bananas and compostables the last two years— omg we’re in our 3rd year in business 😦😳🥳)! . There’s something to be said for people approaching the station to take a picture of it or to thank me for being here as they drop their waste in the appropriate bin. Drei Wochen gemeinsames Stadtradeln für Klima, Umweltschutz, Gesundheit mit unmittelbaren Begegnungen liegen hinter der Stadt Leer. 🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲🚲 Für die Einen eine Experiment verstärkt auf das Auto zu verzichten, für andere Alltag. Mit dem Ergebnis, dass hoffentlich viele Bürgerinnen und Bürger die Erfahrung gemacht haben: Mit dem Rad dauert es gar nicht länger und viele Wege sind wirklich wunderbar mit dem Rad zu erledigen. Als Bürgermeisterin, die auch ohne dreiwöchiges Stadtradeln bevorzugt das Auto stehen lässt und mit dem Rad fährt, waren diese Wochen wieder eine tolle Erfahrung so vielen Radlern zu begegnen, und in dieser Zeit auch gezielt Touren absolviert zu haben. Ein großer Dank an unseren gehörlosen Stadtradelnstar Lydia Niemeyer, die bei Wind und Wetter hunderte Kilometer geradelt ist, die Region erkundet hat und besondere Erfahrungen uns mitgeteilt hat – auch über ihren Blog, in dem sie ihre besonderen Erfahrungen als gehörlose Radlerin konnten wir ihr Engagement verfolgen. Danke an die Unterstützer, die mit wertvollen Preisen die Radler motiviert haben. Danke dem ADFC, der viele Touren im Namen des Stadtradelns angeboten und durchgeführt hat, dem Wetter getrotzt, denn ab und zu meinte es das Wetter gar nicht gut! Jetzt warten wir auf die Gesamteintragung aller geradelter Kilometer!! Es gibt noch bis zum 27.09 Zeit, die gefahrenen Kilometer bei unserem Team rund ums Stadtradeln zu melden und die Kilometerzettel im Bürgerbüro abzugeben. Dann wird gezählt und ausgewertet. Just as I’ve shared with them, here are some of the facts about the VAN den Dungen campaign office. 💜 Yes it’s ours - well my father-in-law Henk’s to be specific 💜 What do we normally use it for? It is the delivery van for our family business - Forty Winks 💜 Who came up with the idea to turn it into a campaign van? That would be my husband Cameron - I thought he was crazy 💜 Why did you decide to do it? Due to Covid-19 business closures it wasn’t doing much at all and with campaign restrictions meaning the cancellation of several planned activities we decided to use our small budget wisely and create a larger than life billboard to spread my message. It was actually cheaper than printing and professionally distributing one flyer! 💜 Can you reverse park it? I prefer not to, especially due to the lack of visibility out of the back - it’s like there is a face staring back at me 🤣 💜 Who paid for it? As an independent my entire campaign is self funded 💜 Does it have any other uses? With two boys 6 and 3 it has also been a dinner table, a police station/jail, a secret hideout for Henry Danger and a Nerf War assault vehicle. FOR THE RECORD At the 13 May 2020 Council Meeting Cr Annalivia Carli Hannan @livinmoreland moved an amendment: “As part of the consultation, Council consults the community with the option to continue with weekly garbage and recycling collections as is the current arrangement.” (She did not want FORTNIGHTLY garbage and recycling collection). The Motion was lost and I called for a division (noted in the minutes who voted for and against). So who voted For Cr Carli Hannan’s Amendment for keeping WEEKLY garbage and recycling collection? Cr Annalivia Carli Hannan Cr Oscar Yildiz Cr Lambros Tapinos Cr John Kavanagh Cr Sue Bolton We then went back to the Substantive Motion (the original) and 9 Councillors voted for, while Cr Carli Hannan and I abstained (we declined to vote). Basically Councillors voted to cut your waste collection of red and yellow bins from weekly to fortnightly collection. No doubt we do more than just rates, roads and rubbish but one of the most fundamental tangible services we provide is the weekly collection of your bins. Anna and I are not against recycling and reducing waste but we are realistic and acknowledge that Moreland is not ready for fortnightly collections. COVID-19 has changed the way we work and as we spend more time at home we are creating more waste. Our bin lids are barely closing while some residents hope their neighbours bins are half full on bin night. Family Adventure… . . . Was on the move today. We went out early before it got too hot 🌞 The girls really wanted to ride their bike/scooters so that’s what we did! M is particularly fond of the scooter…feels like one of the big girls I guess😁 . . . L has come a long way on her bike. This is her second one…she was too scared to ride her first, smaller one. But now she loves it and we’re working on getting her confident enough to take those training wheels off! She also goes nowhere without a leotard and tights 🩰 . . For the first several months of having her scooter, H couldn’t figure out how to turn it without stopping and manually pointing it where she wanted to go. It made walks even slower...if that’s possible to imagine 😂 But now she’s a natural and scoots quickly wherever she wants to go! . . . And M…well, she enjoys being pushed around and feeling like she’s part of the big girl fun! . . . Hey ya’ll what’s poppin. 💁🏼‍♀️ I want to share something pretty wild with hopes it may help other [anxious] ppl like me! I’ve always been a pretty nervous person who’s struggled with stepping outside my comfort zone. On stage I can but IRL? I am *not* adventurous! My partner is though. And he’s gently encouraged me to try new things & in doing that I’ve realized I’m way stronger and braver than I think. This year I went on a huge scary zip line (I cried but still), I went on jet skis (they were wicked fast tho so I also cried), took up exercising (Lost 10 lbs!) & (r u sitting down?) I absolutely LOVE skiing!! But here’s the gag- doing these seemingly scary & unknown activities didn’t break my foot. You know what did? WALKING 🚶🏼‍♀️ DOWN 🚶🏼‍♀️THE 🚶🏼‍♀️STREET! It’s such a lesson to 𝒏𝒐𝒕 𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒓 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒑 𝒚𝒐𝒖 from doing something, because the scary / bad stuff can happen anywhere! I’ve spent most of my life worrying about the “what if’s” and it’s such a waste of time. ✨This year has been so awful so I’m working harder than ever to continue conquering my fears! One day soon I hope to have the confidence to look a pack of teenagers in the eye (nothing scarier). But until then, baby steps. Or in my case, baby hobbles! . . . . . . Pandemic pastime... making movies with Micah! ❤️❤️❤️ He asked the other day if I thought our movies would be in theaters and millions of people would see them and I said, “well, buddy... I’ve just got a cell phone and a green screen to work with. We don’t have a budget or a crew or equipment or ya know- all the stuff you need to make big movies...” and he says, “well- we could give it a shot!” The kid’s got dreams- that’s for sure. We made a 9 minute short film for my dad’s 70th birthday last month using the green screen to place family members from three different states into the scenes together! Hey Fam! As you know, we closed our doors on March 13th while we monitored the COVID-19 Outbreak. We knew this would be a week or two, and were happy to at the very least send a care package home to help folx prepare for what we now know as “self-quarantine.” We’ve never been through this before and had no idea what we were in for. This past week marked our 6th week since re-opening the café with limited hours and a limited capacity. While we’re grateful to see so many of your faces (and catch up when time allowed), the reality is this industry has been hit tremendously hard. We’ve made PUF a place where people can come to meet with a friend over lunch, work from all day, or host a large meeting. PUF has been a respite for many from the day-to-day of school and work. And of course, Fiesta Friday has been a home to the violinists, the poets, rappers, singers, and lovers from all walks of life. Sadly, this isn’t the same in a COVID-19 society. The mission of Earth, Wind & Fuego is about job creation in a trauma-informed environment for people who face barriers to employment, which we’re no longer able to do with the café operation. S.M.A.R.T. Goals All of us have previously set goals in life that we failed to achieve. Sometimes due to external circumstances, sometimes due to a change in priorities or simply due to lack of organisation and motivation. However, people often also fail because their goals are not well defined. In this video our trainer and general manager @ashykirby breaks down the concept of S.M.A.R.T goals. S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for: ۰ Specific: Well defined, clear and unambiguous . e.g. Weight loss or muscle gain or getting better at a particular lift. ۰ Measurable: within specific criteria e.g. lose 2kg. ۰ Achievable: Attainable and not impossible to achieve. ۰ Realistic: within reach given all important variables/constraints. 2kg weight loss in 2 months is realistic for most healthy people. ۰ Timely: with clearly defined timeline including a start and end date. Once you have SMART goal it becomes a lot easier to focus on execution and keep yourself accountable, which means you are much more likely to actually achieve it.
