Populasi Badak Jawa di Taman Nasional Ujung Kulon saat ini jumlahnya mencapai 60 individu. Integritas habitatnya bersaing dengan pertumbuhan masif  langkap (Arenga obtusifolia), sejenis tanaman palem yang menghalangi sinar matahari menembus bagian bawah hutan, menyebabkan tidak tumbuhnya pakan alami badak. Ini  merupakan salah satu ancaman serius, selain bencana alam, bagi keberlangsungan populasi Badak Jawa yang hanya tertinggal di Indonesia. “Badak Jawa harus segera dicarikan “rumah baru” sebagai habitat keduanya selain di Ujung Kulon. Designed to raise awareness of and to celebrate wildlife, this years theme is life below water. While this is geared toward marine species and coastal habitats we couldnt let it pass without mentioning Asian elephants and their love of water. In addition to smelling, trumpeting, drinking and grabbing things, elephants use their trunks to breathe (like a snorkel) in deep water. In this way, they can swim fairly long distances. Their love of water and of swimming also means that they can relieve the pressure on their limbs and they will happily wallow, dive and paddle for hours. They also drink about c.40 gallons of water a day! Tara, the street begging elephant rescued by Elephant Family founder Mark Shand (pictured together here) is famous for her love of water - often refusing to come out and swimming long distances under water. This extract from Marks fabulous book, Travels on my Elephant sums her up: That evening, when the muddy water was turning crimson from the rays of the sun, we bathed Tara in the Gandak, approached from a steep muddy bank, down which she slid on her bottom, like a child on a tobaggan. She then proceeded to queue-barge into the elephant-filled shallows ... It was dark by the time Tara had finished her ablutions. As its world rhino day I thought Id post this encounter. It was a surprise as neither we nor the rhino expected to see the other. We stopped immediately as we knew that rhinos have poor eyesight and will often just charge. This particular rhino had a look in our direction and then walked back into the forest. I was surprised to learn that rhinos are sometimes attacked by elephants. Even giants fall The circle of life is harsh and relentless. The rotting carcass of an Elephant bull provides shade during the heat of the day to a nomadic male Lion. The smell was putrid, the flies were intense, yet this Lion stays true to his claimed prize and continued to feed on the carcass throughout the day. The Elephant bull died of natural causes during a fight with another younger bull for dominance. Mavuso, as he was named, was estimated to be around 55 years old and formed part of one of the original Tuskers introduced to Pilanesberg from Kruger in 1998. While this species has lived throughout Southeast Asia for millennia, there are only 80 rhinos left today. Given this critical need, the Society has joined forces with #SumatranRhinoRescue to rescue and relocate these animals to managed breeding facilities, as well as establish new sanctuaries in Indonesia. Calling all wildlife lovers! Please help us in supporting our Wildlife Warriors! The current travel bans have had a devastating impact on the conservation world as most protected areas rely solely on income from tourism to fund conservation and wildlife protection operational costs. Parks have had to make ends meet with zero income from tourism and all financial resources are depleted. Species such as White and Black rhino, Wild Dog, Cheetah and more require continued protection, and funds raised from the Zululand Conservation Trust go directly towards endangered species protection and monitoring at Manyoni Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The project aims to fund equipment, protective clothing, training, death and disability insurance for field rangers on the front line. Field rangers have very high risk and stressful looking after endangered species and we therefore have to look after them. Job security and life Insurance will provide them with piece of mind knowing their families will be looked after. Funding for field rangers will ensure endangered species are protected. The project will fund an entire anti-poaching units operational costs for three months. This will ensure that critical populations of white and black rhino as well as wild dog and cheetah are protected and monitored while there is no income from tourism. Age: 40+ Back length: 3.34m Collared: 23 April 2014 This bull, Howard, is seemingly fearless. When we approached him by helicopter (Helicopter Horizons ), he did not run as most elephants did. Instead, he turned to face the helicopter as if to spar with the machine twice his size and ten times as noisy! 🚁 Once darted, he took the longest to go down, another indicator of his power and tenacity. The interactive software uses advanced algorithms to analyze more than 100 measurements of rhino footprints.    Each footprint left behind by a rhinoceros is as distinctive as a human fingerprint. Since the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, it has been widely reported that the resulting shutdown of economies and loss of tourism has led to an increase in wildlife poaching. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. Today is World Rhino Day!⁠ ⁠ In 2013, a founding population of 21 Black Rhino were introduced to Borana Conservancy. Once they were settled and had established their territories, the fence between Borana and neighbouring Lewa Wildlife Conservancy was dropped forming one continuous landscape now known as the Lewa-Borana Landscape. This ecosystem allows the wildlife safe and free rein over 90,000 acres of intact African wilderness, making this one of East Africa’s largest continuous rhino habitat. In 2019, there were 17 black rhino births and 15 white rhino births across the Lewa Borana Landscape and it is now home to 114 black rhino and 97 white rhino. Adult rhinos have no predators aside from humans. They are not heading towards extinction due to the actions of any other species except us. WE are the cause of THEIR decline and so it is OUR responsibility to ensure that the rhino species across the world do not go extinct. Look at your fingernails. Rhino horn is made of the exact same material as your nails - Keratin. Yet rhinos are being killed at devastating rates so humans can use their horn as a status symbol and to ‘treat’ illnesses. This is WRONG. Rhino conservation has made huge steps forward and we have the incredible humans on the ground risking their lives every day to thank for this. Especially today. Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Poachers have been known to use photos posted on social media to look at a variety of factors from horn size to specific features that they could use to help them track down a rhino.⠀ 🦏⠀ Since its #WorldRhinoDay and this photo is over 3 years old Im happy to share it.⠀ 🦏⠀ But If you decide to share a photo of a rhino make sure its at least 1 month old, the GPS settings of your camera are turned off and you havent tagged the exact location of where you took the photo. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by.
