Antibiotic resistance is now considered a global public health crisis. Some researchers are predicting that by 2050 our resistance to antibiotics will cause up to 10 million deaths every year, outdoing cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide. Antibiotics are (over) used in animal farming due to the intense farming processes that exist within the meat industry. The practice of animals being forced to live in confined, crowded spaces; not being given enough time to recover in-between births; and baby animals being taken away from their mothers too early places a strain on the animals’ health, compromises their immune systems, and increases the risk of disease transmission. Due to this risk some countries use antibiotics as a preventive measure, meaning these medicines are given to animals as soon as they are born, whether they are ill or not. Other countries use antibiotics to make livestock animals grow faster, so that profit margins are increased. Every time we use antibiotics (whether in humans or animals) we risk the development of drug-resistant bacteria (a superbug). By using antibiotics in animals when they are not sick, we are adding to the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing. Remember that saying ‘you are what you eat’? Because our health is closely linked with the health of our ecosystems, and the animals in it, the use of antibiotics in animals can affect humans as diseases can be shared between humans and animals through direct contact. This is not to say we should stop using antibiotics altogether. Antibiotics are needed to protect the health of humans and animals, but should only be used when the animals are already sick. While the vast majority of antibiotic resistance is still caused by overuse in humans, researchers continue to acknowledge that the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture does pose a risk to human health. Limiting antibiotic use in animals is therefore an important step in reducing the risk that antibiotic resistant bugs (that can ultimately affect our health) develop in the first place. - @no_meat_may on Instagram

This photo is of a stunning Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis) that I found whilst out in the bush and I have never shared this photo before and heres why.⠀ 🦏⠀ I dont normally post photo of rhinos, especially any that have been taken recently, due to poaching risk. Poachers have been known to use photos posted on social media to look at a variety of factors from horn size to specific features that they could use to help them track down a rhino.⠀ 🦏⠀ Since its #WorldRhinoDay and this photo is over 3 years old Im happy to share it.⠀ 🦏⠀ But If you decide to share a photo of a rhino make sure its at least 1 month old, the GPS settings of your camera are turned off and you havent tagged the exact location of where you took the photo. As its world rhino day I thought Id post this encounter. It was a surprise as neither we nor the rhino expected to see the other. We stopped immediately as we knew that rhinos have poor eyesight and will often just charge. This particular rhino had a look in our direction and then walked back into the forest. I was surprised to learn that rhinos are sometimes attacked by elephants. @marataba_ and Marakele National Park are home to critically important, medium-sized population of white and black rhino, which, similarly to all other rhino populations on the continent, is under pressure from several threats. The most serious threat is the current onslaught of poaching for their horn. This has escalated since 2008 to the point where more than a thousand white rhino have been poached annually in South Africa alone, forcing the rhino population into a serious decline. Guests joining Wild Eye on one of the @maratabaconservationcamps safari experiences (watch this space) will contribute directly to ongoing management interventions to identify every single rhino in the park. Animals are individually located and immobilized before having ear notches cut into the ears for easy identification, microchips inserted into the horns and body, and DNA samples taken and submitted to the Rhinoceros DNA indexing system (RHoDIS) database. Whilst the plight of these large and charismatic species is certainly worth recognizing on this day, let us not forget the larger suite of wildlife species that are significantly impacted by illegal bushmeat hunting, body part trade, human wildlife conflict as well as habitat loss and fragmentation. A few scenes from a fascinating and inspiring trip to the Auvergne with the intrepid members of Cow Club II. Our first cheese visit was to the farm of the Delorme family, who began making Salers Tradition three years ago, making them the newest member of the AOP and giving us all hope that this rare cheese may have a future. As I watched the make—which Francis and I missed when we went to visit Guy Chambon four years ago—what struck me most was the incredible resemblance to the description of the Cannon Cheddar make in FJ Lloyd’s report for the Bath and West Society in the early 1890s. Repeatedly cutting the curd into pieces, piling them up, and pressing under weight to drive out moisture, followed by milling, moulding, and three days in the press...it was like seeing the process of Cheddar transcribed over time and space. The biggest difference was the acidity; there was no waiting around for the milk to begin to acidity before starting here—in fact, cheese is made twice a day to ensure that no preripening occurs. Today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, we thank all our supporters who have given us the means to keep fighting for our rhinos, on the ground. 2020 has been challenging on all levels and we thank you all for the ongoing support 🙌 The following is an update on poaching survivor, Rita and her calf, Ndinani: 2016 poaching survivor, Rita, was sadly euthanized earlier during 2020 when her condition suddenly deteriorated because of an aggressive leiomyoma tumour, leaving her calf, Ndinani. Ndinani (meaning I am with you in Xhosa as named by veterinarian, Dr. Brendan Tindall) was only 14 months old and still dependent on Ritas care at the time of her death. Dr William Fowlds fitted the tracking collar in the days after Ritas death to ensure that her health and wellbeing could be monitored closely during the months after she was orphaned. The tracking collar was sponsored by Chipembere Rhino Foundation, for intensive monitoring purposes. Ndinani is regularly tracked in field using this tracking collar on her left front foot. She loves swims and mud baths, even during the icy winter months. She is doing remarkably well and has become a strong and confident little rhino all on her own. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. In de bossen van de Pyreneeën loopt het Gasconne varken. Een zeer oud weidevarken van het Iberische soort met grote, naar voren gerichte oren. De Gasconne, ook bekend onder de naam “Noir de Bigorre”, is tegenwoordig grotendeels weggekruist en daarom zeer zeldzaam. Het ras is afkomstig uit dezelfde streek als het Gasconne rund, dat al sinds 1987 in de Baambrugse weiden van Lindenhoff graast. Jaren geleden werd besloten dat er ook maar eens wat Gasconne varkens moesten komen. De Citroën werd gestart en met een gangetje van 120 km/u werd er naar Zuid-Frankrijk gereden. What a different a week and proper care make! Check out these week progress pictures of Linda - she’s doing so well. Our amazing vets determined that with a high protein diet and pain medication for her back end, Linda can get thrive and eventually meet/live with Jerry. She loves her food and starting to get used to all of the attention from our volunteers though she’s still pretty shy. We love how goofy she is - like every other Jersey cow she likes to play with her tongue and moo at the food guy (@yourfavirishman). Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. Early morning update on Jessie from Yolandi The Rhino Orphanage. “Jessie is ok. She was all over the place yesterday though. Very panicky, very anxious. Even If I just moved a little she would jump and frantically call. If me or Zanre left the room, Jessie would freak even though the other person is still there. She had a complete meltdown in the afternoon so dr Pierre said to give her a mild sedative. She has slept well last night, just calls every now and again to check if Im still there. This poor thing has been through a lot hey. Definitely traumatized. Shes drinking vey well at least. But her tummy is still quiet. We are adding extra fibre to her milk and im giving her a warmwater enema later to try soften the fecal balls so they move”. To this I want to add that Jessie’s mom was definitely poached. At least 2 days before we found her. From the wound on her side it would seem the poachers also struck at her but luckily she managed to evade any serious blows. Jessie is now getting the best care possible and will be bottle fed till she can eat solids. This means carers will be with her for the next 3 years after which she will be released back into the wild. Rhinos soon rewild. They disassociate from humans quite quickly, luckily. Care is very costly and the Orphanage does not charge us any fees for raising our orphans. If you are keen to donate please do so direct to the Rhino Orphanage. See the link below.
