Look dear we have got an audience! Greater One-Horned Rhinos Mating Witnessed this special moment in Kaziranga for more than 30 mins. These two had road-blocked the tourist track and continued with their not so private moments in front of us without getting bothered. Finally the couple decided to move inside the grassland and we were able to move from the spot. Usually Rhinos can stay in this position for 4-5 hours straight. Here, Najin, one of the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, recovers after her latest ovum pick-up procedure. It was conducted by an incredible team of scientists from Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), #Avantea, @OlPejeta Conservancy, @KenyaWildlifeService, and @SafariParkDvurKralove. The hope is to implant these embryos into southern white rhino surrogates in the near future. Calling all wildlife lovers! Please help us in supporting our Wildlife Warriors! The current travel bans have had a devastating impact on the conservation world as most protected areas rely solely on income from tourism to fund conservation and wildlife protection operational costs. Parks have had to make ends meet with zero income from tourism and all financial resources are depleted. Species such as White and Black rhino, Wild Dog, Cheetah and more require continued protection, and funds raised from the Zululand Conservation Trust go directly towards endangered species protection and monitoring at Manyoni Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The project aims to fund equipment, protective clothing, training, death and disability insurance for field rangers on the front line. Field rangers have very high risk and stressful looking after endangered species and we therefore have to look after them. Job security and life Insurance will provide them with piece of mind knowing their families will be looked after. Funding for field rangers will ensure endangered species are protected. The project will fund an entire anti-poaching units operational costs for three months. This will ensure that critical populations of white and black rhino as well as wild dog and cheetah are protected and monitored while there is no income from tourism. The interactive software uses advanced algorithms to analyze more than 100 measurements of rhino footprints. Each footprint left behind by a rhinoceros is as distinctive as a human fingerprint. This means that the images analyzed with the Footprint Identification Technique (FIT) can be linked to specific individuals. The images will be digitally archived in a global database, providing conservationists with a new tool to monitor the movements of black rhinos across different protected areas. Integritas habitatnya bersaing dengan pertumbuhan masif langkap (Arenga obtusifolia), sejenis tanaman palem yang menghalangi sinar matahari menembus bagian bawah hutan, menyebabkan tidak tumbuhnya pakan alami badak. Ini merupakan salah satu ancaman serius, selain bencana alam, bagi keberlangsungan populasi Badak Jawa yang hanya tertinggal di Indonesia. “Badak Jawa harus segera dicarikan “rumah baru” sebagai habitat keduanya selain di Ujung Kulon. Ini adalah langkah mitigasi yang diperlukan untuk menjamin kelangsungan populasi Badak Jawa di dunia,” kata Dr. Arnold Sitompul, Direktur Konservasi WWF Indonesia. “Kondisi habitat badak Jawa di TNUK sangat rentan oleh bencana alam, karena lokasinya yang dekat Gunung Krakatau. 𝐓𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞! 🐘💉 Earlier this week, our team in Zinave National Park noticed an #elephant that was limping badly and dragging its back foot. The veterinary team from @savingthesurvivors were called in to assist. After sedating the elephant the painful wound was cleaned and treated. We were also very relieved to see that the injury was not as a result of a snare, as was first thought. The ranger teams from Peace Parks and the National Administration for Conservation Areas have been working around the clock, removing more than 4 000 snares from the park over the past 18 months. The elephant was soon on his feet again and off to find the rest of the herd - hopefully feeling much better than before! 💖 Through partnerships with organisations like @debeersgroup and @ezemvelokznwildlife, 169 elephants have been rewilded to Zinave over the past 5 years. - @peaceparks on Instagram

Adult rhinos have no predators aside from humans. They are not heading towards extinction due to the actions of any other species except us. WE are the cause of THEIR decline and so it is OUR responsibility to ensure that the rhino species across the world do not go extinct. Look at your fingernails. Rhino horn is made of the exact same material as your nails - Keratin. Yet rhinos are being killed at devastating rates so humans can use their horn as a status symbol and to ‘treat’ illnesses. This is WRONG. Rhino conservation has made huge steps forward and we have the incredible humans on the ground risking their lives every day to thank for this. Especially today. While Romeo receives lots of enrichment from his dedicated keepers and adoration from local fans here in Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo is committed to conserving other members of this critically endangered species in the wild. Lincoln Park Zoo scientists have assisted the recovery of endangered black rhinos across Africa, which were nearly driven extinct during the 1990s by habitat destruction and poaching. Today is World Rhino Day and we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the incredible women working to protect these iconic species. Sadly in the last few decades the poaching crisis has pushed rhinos to the brink of extinction. I’m guest posting here on @everydayextinction- All this week I’ll be talking about community based conservation, the wildlife, and ecosystems that support it, with particularly interest in regards to how this might function post COVID-19 - A bull elephant is caught in sinking mud at the edge of a dam. A herder finds it and immediately goes to find a community ranger. The ranger notifies his control room. Rangers are mobilised with support from Loisaba conservancy @loisaba_conservancy and the Northern Rangelands Trust @nrt_kenya including @kieran.avery whose work I’ve been documenting this past week. He’s the one seen here digging it out. The elephant, now exhausted and severely dehydrated, is part dug, part dragged out of the mud that would surely have been his grave. Having been washed down it got up, gave itself a good shake and wandered off for a spot of browsing. The point here for me is not only that the elephant is now alive and well, but also more importantly, that all these organisations, although operating in extraordinarily remote parts of Kenya, are able to communicate (@kinetic_six), plan, support, and action the rescue and continued long life of this incredible creature. This has been a Herculean task to get to this point. The point, my point, is that it takes money to do this, and to maintain the infrastructure to support it. Without income from tourism in this part of the world this is going to get increasingly difficult to replicate. We all bang on about what will happen if tourism doesn’t return. However, if Covid-19 rips the soul out of this part of the planet it will not only be those who consume wildlife products that will be threatened by its icy talons, but also those magnificent creatures which these products are derived from: the wildlife itself. Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. 6 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to step into a pen with this 400lb baby white rhino named Nyani. She had been rescued from the wild after witnessing poachers brutally cut off her mother’s horn and leave her to die. Nyani was found next to her mother and brought to a rhino orphanage to be cared for and eventually be released back into the wild. She nibbled my tutu and I was so taken with her that I convinced my fellow dancers to adopt her with me. In the spirit of that first foray into rhino conservation, I’ve signed up for my first 5K run. It is a virtual Run for the Wild in conjunction with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society. My team is called “RhiNO? RhinYES!” So far my team consists of myself, Pete (my hubby), and little Violet Storm, who will tag along with us via scooter. As we commemorate World Rhino Day 2020, let us take the time to remember that while adult rhinos have no natural predators in the wild, their size, speed, and strength do not protect them from humans with weapons. Poaching has and remains, the number one cause for these wonderful beasts declining population. Between 1970 and 1992 alone, the black rhino population decreased by 96%, with total numbers dropping to as low as around 2,400. Ook met onze nieuwste populatie neushoorns in Malawi (de eerste internationale verhuizing) gaat het goed: ze zijn geacclimatiseerd en geven nu, één jaar later, kalveren! Today is World Rhino Day so here’s a stark reminder of what continues to happen to this unique but persecuted animal every day. This magnificent Black Rhino Bull was poached for its horns only a couple of hours previously at Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve, South Africa. The killers entered the park illegally, shooting the rhino at a water hole with a silenced hunting rifle. An autopsy and postmortem carried out by members of the KZN Ezemvelo team later revealed that the large caliber bullet went straight through this rhino, causing massive tissue damage. He did not die immediately but ran a short distance, fell to his knees and was shot again from close range. The arterial blood spray suggests that his heart was still pumping when they cut off his horns. The loss of this prime breeding bull is tragic, breeding is key to survival for these animals and as the top genes are removed by poaching, this further threatens rhino survival. HluHluwe Umfolozi is one of the last repositories for these animals, with less than 3000 black rhinos left in the wild today. It’s going to be interesting trying to explain to our kids one day why we did not do more to save animals so that they too could have seen them in the wild. Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. This photo is of a stunning Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis) that I found whilst out in the bush and I have never shared this photo before and heres why.⠀ 🦏⠀ I dont normally post photo of rhinos, especially any that have been taken recently, due to poaching risk. Poachers have been known to use photos posted on social media to look at a variety of factors from horn size to specific features that they could use to help them track down a rhino.⠀ 🦏⠀ Since its #WorldRhinoDay and this photo is over 3 years old Im happy to share it.⠀ 🦏⠀ But If you decide to share a photo of a rhino make sure its at least 1 month old, the GPS settings of your camera are turned off and you havent tagged the exact location of where you took the photo. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. Oggi è il #WorldRhinoDay, la giornata mondiale del rinoceronte dedicata alla salvaguardia di questo importante animale purtroppo a rischio di estinzione. Nonostante i grandissimi sforzi di tutela dal bracconaggio, il futuro della specie è ancora piuttosto incerto soprattutto a causa del commercio internazionale del suo corno, ancora troppo diffuso. Lomaggio contemporaneo dellartista Li-Jen Shih trasforma il rinoceronte in un’opera artistica contemporanea, un’icona eroica e moderna del “vero sopravvissuto”. Il “King Kong Rhino” esposto nel Belvedere di Palazzo Sturm riporta alla mente, da un lato, le problematiche ambientali del rispetto per la natura e dei rischi che questa specie corre a causa dell’incuria umana e, dall’altro, le tematiche storico artistiche che si insediano nella tradizione bassanese dell’incisione e del collezionismo.
