Great news out of Tanzania. Elephant numbers have stabilized in a key landscape that was known for rampant poaching just a few years ago. This according to a massive wildlife survey by @TheWCS and Tanzania’s Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). . An estimated 20,145 elephants were recorded during the 20-day survey, which covered 29,855 square miles of the Katavi-Rukwa and Ruaha-Rungwa landscape and included parks, game reserves, and other protected and conservation areas. . Far fewer elephant carcasses were found compared to 2015 when the last survey took place, indicating that poaching is now being brought under control – though a few were still detected in some areas. Today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, we thank all our supporters who have given us the means to keep fighting for our rhinos, on the ground. 2020 has been challenging on all levels and we thank you all for the ongoing support 🙌 The following is an update on poaching survivor, Rita and her calf, Ndinani: 2016 poaching survivor, Rita, was sadly euthanized earlier during 2020 when her condition suddenly deteriorated because of an aggressive leiomyoma tumour, leaving her calf, Ndinani. Ndinani (meaning I am with you in Xhosa as named by veterinarian, Dr. Brendan Tindall) was only 14 months old and still dependent on Ritas care at the time of her death. Dr William Fowlds fitted the tracking collar in the days after Ritas death to ensure that her health and wellbeing could be monitored closely during the months after she was orphaned. The tracking collar was sponsored by Chipembere Rhino Foundation, for intensive monitoring purposes. Ndinani is regularly tracked in field using this tracking collar on her left front foot. She loves swims and mud baths, even during the icy winter months. She is doing remarkably well and has become a strong and confident little rhino all on her own. I’m guest posting here on @everydayextinction- All this week I’ll be talking about community based conservation, the wildlife, and ecosystems that support it, with particularly interest in regards to how this might function post COVID-19 - A bull elephant is caught in sinking mud at the edge of a dam. A herder finds it and immediately goes to find a community ranger. The ranger notifies his control room. Rangers are mobilised with support from Loisaba conservancy @loisaba_conservancy and the Northern Rangelands Trust @nrt_kenya including @kieran.avery whose work I’ve been documenting this past week. He’s the one seen here digging it out. The elephant, now exhausted and severely dehydrated, is part dug, part dragged out of the mud that would surely have been his grave. Having been washed down it got up, gave itself a good shake and wandered off for a spot of browsing. The point here for me is not only that the elephant is now alive and well, but also more importantly, that all these organisations, although operating in extraordinarily remote parts of Kenya, are able to communicate (@kinetic_six), plan, support, and action the rescue and continued long life of this incredible creature. This has been a Herculean task to get to this point. The point, my point, is that it takes money to do this, and to maintain the infrastructure to support it. Without income from tourism in this part of the world this is going to get increasingly difficult to replicate. We all bang on about what will happen if tourism doesn’t return. However, if Covid-19 rips the soul out of this part of the planet it will not only be those who consume wildlife products that will be threatened by its icy talons, but also those magnificent creatures which these products are derived from: the wildlife itself. The interactive software uses advanced algorithms to analyze more than 100 measurements of rhino footprints.    Each footprint left behind by a rhinoceros is as distinctive as a human fingerprint. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. Calling all wildlife lovers! Please help us in supporting our Wildlife Warriors! The current travel bans have had a devastating impact on the conservation world as most protected areas rely solely on income from tourism to fund conservation and wildlife protection operational costs. Parks have had to make ends meet with zero income from tourism and all financial resources are depleted. Species such as White and Black rhino, Wild Dog, Cheetah and more require continued protection, and funds raised from the Zululand Conservation Trust go directly towards endangered species protection and monitoring at Manyoni Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The project aims to fund equipment, protective clothing, training, death and disability insurance for field rangers on the front line. Field rangers have very high risk and stressful looking after endangered species and we therefore have to look after them. Job security and life Insurance will provide them with piece of mind knowing their families will be looked after. Funding for field rangers will ensure endangered species are protected. The project will fund an entire anti-poaching units operational costs for three months. This will ensure that critical populations of white and black rhino as well as wild dog and cheetah are protected and monitored while there is no income from tourism. Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. As investigations continue into elephant deaths in Botswana, ECF Director and Save the Elephants’ Head of Research, Chris Thouless, says it is wrong to assume the Botswana Government is dragging its feet. This photo is of a stunning Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis) that I found whilst out in the bush and I have never shared this photo before and heres why.⠀ 🦏⠀ I dont normally post photo of rhinos, especially any that have been taken recently, due to poaching risk. Poachers have been known to use photos posted on social media to look at a variety of factors from horn size to specific features that they could use to help them track down a rhino.⠀ 🦏⠀ Since its #WorldRhinoDay and this photo is over 3 years old Im happy to share it.⠀ 🦏⠀ But If you decide to share a photo of a rhino make sure its at least 1 month old, the GPS settings of your camera are turned off and you havent tagged the exact location of where you took the photo. Yet, the demand for Rhino horns in the illegal wildlife trade market persists because of its assumed medicinal benefits which has no proof at all and also because of its high social status. Two of the five remaining species, the Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino are critically endangered whereas the Greater One-Horned Rhino, 80% of which thrives in our country, is now a Vulnerable species under the IUCN Red List. Poaching, illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss are three of the biggest threats that the Rhinos face today. One Rhino is killed every 8 hours for its horns! Will photographed this black rhino using our camera trap system with two off-camera flashes. He used a single long exposure to expose the stars and illuminated the rhino with a flash at the start of the exposure. Goed nieuws op #WorldRhinoDay🦏☀ • Er zijn in 2020 13 nieuwe kalveren geboren op projectlocaties in Zuid-Afrika en in Malawi. • In totaal is het aantal zwarte neushoorns in Afrika gestegen van 2500 in de jaren ’90 tot 5600 anno 2020 (!) Ook met onze nieuwste populatie neushoorns in Malawi (de eerste internationale verhuizing) gaat het goed: ze zijn geacclimatiseerd en geven nu, één jaar later, kalveren! Na 17 jaar werk om de groei en het aantal zwarte neushoorns te verhogen, zien we de resultaten waarop we hadden gehoopt. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. Äärimmäisen uhanalaisen pensassarvikuonon suojeluprojektin alueilla Etelä-Afrikassa ja Malawissa on syntynyt tänä vuonna ainakin 13 pensassarvikuonon poikasta. WWF:n projektilla pyritään laajentamaan lajin elinalueita.⁣ ⁣ Tällä hetkellä pensassarvikuonoja elää luonnossa kaikkiaan noin 5 500 yksilöä, kun 25 vuotta sitten niitä oli ainoastaan noin 2 500.⁣ ⁣ Pensassarvikuono on yksi maailman viidestä sarvikuonolajista. Oggi è il #WorldRhinoDay, la giornata mondiale del rinoceronte dedicata alla salvaguardia di questo importante animale purtroppo a rischio di estinzione. Nonostante i grandissimi sforzi di tutela dal bracconaggio, il futuro della specie è ancora piuttosto incerto soprattutto a causa del commercio internazionale del suo corno, ancora troppo diffuso. Lomaggio contemporaneo dellartista Li-Jen Shih trasforma il rinoceronte in un’opera artistica contemporanea, un’icona eroica e moderna del “vero sopravvissuto”. 6 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to step into a pen with this 400lb baby white rhino named Nyani. She had been rescued from the wild after witnessing poachers brutally cut off her mother’s horn and leave her to die. Nyani was found next to her mother and brought to a rhino orphanage to be cared for and eventually be released back into the wild. She nibbled my tutu and I was so taken with her that I convinced my fellow dancers to adopt her with me. In the spirit of that first foray into rhino conservation, I’ve signed up for my first 5K run. It is a virtual Run for the Wild in conjunction with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society. My team is called “RhiNO? RhinYES!” So far my team consists of myself, Pete (my hubby), and little Violet Storm, who will tag along with us via scooter. I’m inviting all of you join me in donating, spreading the word, reposting, or daring to join the team! You don’t have to be in nyc since it is all virtual. I’ve started with a modest goal but am hoping with your help I can increase it. The run is on September 26, so we are 35 days and counting.
