Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. WWF:n projektilla pyritään laajentamaan lajin elinalueita. Tällä hetkellä pensassarvikuonoja elää luonnossa kaikkiaan noin 5 500 yksilöä, kun 25 vuotta sitten niitä oli ainoastaan noin 2 500. Integritas habitatnya bersaing dengan pertumbuhan masif langkap (Arenga obtusifolia), sejenis tanaman palem yang menghalangi sinar matahari menembus bagian bawah hutan, menyebabkan tidak tumbuhnya pakan alami badak. Ini merupakan salah satu ancaman serius, selain bencana alam, bagi keberlangsungan populasi Badak Jawa yang hanya tertinggal di Indonesia. “Badak Jawa harus segera dicarikan “rumah baru” sebagai habitat keduanya selain di Ujung Kulon. Ini adalah langkah mitigasi yang diperlukan untuk menjamin kelangsungan populasi Badak Jawa di dunia,” kata Dr. Arnold Sitompul, Direktur Konservasi WWF Indonesia. “Kondisi habitat badak Jawa di TNUK sangat rentan oleh bencana alam, karena lokasinya yang dekat Gunung Krakatau. Our most important priority is the health and safety of our staff and guests. After learning last night that an employee tested positive for the coronavirus, we are arranging testing for all our staff. The employee, a part-time wait staffer, who last worked on Sunday, July 5th, is doing well and is self-isolating at home. The wait staffer also worked on Saturday, July 4th, and was symptom-free for both shifts. Following the state’s safety protocols, they were wearing a face mask and gloves while working on those days. The staffer is self-isolating for at least 2 weeks, and will not return until they are symptom-free and tests negative. Our employees are now in the process of being tested. Until test results are received and precautionary measures have been taken, including a deep-cleaning and sanitizing by a commercial contractor, we will be closed. - A lot of people dont know this but feral pigs can grow extremely large. When they are at this size they are very dangerous, they have been known to eat entire sheep if they get onto someones property and the meat is no good from these pigs. Pigs are also very aggressive when hungry. So watch out!

Team, this is what Project 033 is really about. Supporting the horses so the babies remain safe. Before leaving Care for Wild, I helped with a feed for Yster & Anchor. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. Antibiotic resistance is now considered a global public health crisis. Some researchers are predicting that by 2050 our resistance to antibiotics will cause up to 10 million deaths every year, outdoing cancer as the leading cause of death worldwide. Antibiotics are (over) used in animal farming due to the intense farming processes that exist within the meat industry. The practice of animals being forced to live in confined, crowded spaces; not being given enough time to recover in-between births; and baby animals being taken away from their mothers too early places a strain on the animals’ health, compromises their immune systems, and increases the risk of disease transmission. Due to this risk some countries use antibiotics as a preventive measure, meaning these medicines are given to animals as soon as they are born, whether they are ill or not. Other countries use antibiotics to make livestock animals grow faster, so that profit margins are increased. Every time we use antibiotics (whether in humans or animals) we risk the development of drug-resistant bacteria (a superbug). By using antibiotics in animals when they are not sick, we are adding to the risk of drug-resistant bacteria developing. Remember that saying ‘you are what you eat’? Because our health is closely linked with the health of our ecosystems, and the animals in it, the use of antibiotics in animals can affect humans as diseases can be shared between humans and animals through direct contact. This is not to say we should stop using antibiotics altogether. Antibiotics are needed to protect the health of humans and animals, but should only be used when the animals are already sick. While the vast majority of antibiotic resistance is still caused by overuse in humans, researchers continue to acknowledge that the use of antibiotics in animal agriculture does pose a risk to human health. Limiting antibiotic use in animals is therefore an important step in reducing the risk that antibiotic resistant bugs (that can ultimately affect our health) develop in the first place. - @no_meat_may on Instagram
