Scientists say they have successfully extracted eggs from the last two remaining northern white rhinos, a step on the way to possibly saving the subspecies from extinction. Ten eggs were harvested from the female rhinos, named Najin and Fatu, at the @olpejeta Conservancy in Kenya. The scientists hope to use them to create viable embryos that can be transferred into surrogates, as neither of the donor rhinos can carry a pregnancy to term. The next step is to select female southern white rhinos, another rhino subspecies, at Ol Pejeta to serve as surrogate mothers. Ook met onze nieuwste populatie neushoorns in Malawi (de eerste internationale verhuizing) gaat het goed: ze zijn geacclimatiseerd en geven nu, één jaar later, kalveren! Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. Team, this is what Project 033 is really about. Supporting the horses so the babies remain safe. Before leaving Care for Wild, I helped with a feed for Yster & Anchor. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time. Here, Najin, one of the last two northern white rhinos on the planet, recovers after her latest ovum pick-up procedure. It was conducted by an incredible team of scientists from Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), #Avantea, @OlPejeta Conservancy, @KenyaWildlifeService, and @SafariParkDvurKralove. The hope is to implant these embryos into southern white rhino surrogates in the near future. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. Äärimmäisen uhanalaisen pensassarvikuonon suojeluprojektin alueilla Etelä-Afrikassa ja Malawissa on syntynyt tänä vuonna ainakin 13 pensassarvikuonon poikasta. Yet, the demand for Rhino horns in the illegal wildlife trade market persists because of its assumed medicinal benefits which has no proof at all and also because of its high social status. Two of the five remaining species, the Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino are critically endangered whereas the Greater One-Horned Rhino, 80% of which thrives in our country, is now a Vulnerable species under the IUCN Red List. According to assessments there almost 30,000 rhinoceros living in the world today. 6 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to step into a pen with this 400lb baby white rhino named Nyani. She had been rescued from the wild after witnessing poachers brutally cut off her mother’s horn and leave her to die. Nyani was found next to her mother and brought to a rhino orphanage to be cared for and eventually be released back into the wild. She nibbled my tutu and I was so taken with her that I convinced my fellow dancers to adopt her with me. In the spirit of that first foray into rhino conservation, I’ve signed up for my first 5K run. It is a virtual Run for the Wild in conjunction with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society. My team is called “RhiNO? RhinYES!” So far my team consists of myself, Pete (my hubby), and little Violet Storm, who will tag along with us via scooter. I’m inviting all of you join me in donating, spreading the word, reposting, or daring to join the team! You don’t have to be in nyc since it is all virtual. I’ve started with a modest goal but am hoping with your help I can increase it. The run is on September 26, so we are 35 days and counting.
