Patellofemoral pain can have many causes (genetic, body habitus, exercise technique), and one common symptom is pain during loaded bending of the knee, which is common in most lower body training exercises. Some effective techniques for reducing these symptomsย are strengthening terminal knee extension and squatting with reduced compression at the knee joint. Terminal knee extension (TKE) occurs when you straighten your knee maximally. To add resistance, you can place an anchored band behind your knee and set yourself up so there is tension on the band with ~10 degrees of bend in your knee. From there you simply straighten your knee fully and pause briefly. Try to accumulate fatigue in your quadriceps near your knee joint. Spanish squats require a similar setup, but instead of extending your knee, youll be performing a squat with the anchored band pulling against your knee. Because of the way the knee joint moves on itself, this is an effective way to reduce compressive force through the knee joint.
