Happy to be home and lifting again. This baseball season [short as it was] I really didn’t do much weightlifting wise—enough to feel good and not get stiff, but I dropped a fair amount of muscle and strength. [Our team didn’t prohibit us from joining a gym, but out of an abundance of caution, most of us chose not to and just did home workouts—not to mention the guys were gone most of the time, so we didn’t have time to go anyway]. . . Our bodies go through seasons and this is a really good example of that. I don’t really feel much guilt over limited lifting [I had to choose between a lift, a shower, and catching up on laundry/cleaning—lifting was not always a priority]. I don’t hate that I’m a little softer [the takeout pizza and wine were worth it]. I have a new appreciation for lifting again and am both excited to rebuild some strength and happy to have more than 20 minutes to get a lift in. Sometimes life is crazy and hectic. That’s really okay. Lifting is a compliment to your life, a key to your wellbeing, but it should never cause you guilt if the season you’re in demands less. . . Today we finished up with Dr Brandon’s (the subject) “Functionised” combine. The results will be posted with comparisons since phase one (Burger King Patty’s only), phase two (keto roto rooter) phase three (grass fed/ grass finished) @patlafrieda. In phase one, Dr Brandon only once broke 1 mm/mL blood of ketones with BK, leading us to wonder, what is in those burgers??? Phase two Dr Brandon was close to 2 mm/mL ketones. Phase 3 he rocks over 3.1 mm/mL of blood ketones. Dr Brandon’s performance sucked and then some in phase one and his labs and brain map were seriously concerning (full results will be posted at www.functionised.com/keto.html). By phase three he was a totally different person in a good way. Performance and labs were a total 180. GLUTES🍑& HAMMIES (and a nutrition blurb) ⠀ Matching nutrition to my female physiology has been a game-changer. Ever since I finished grad school, I’ve been having so much fun experimenting with nutritional strategies to see how it affects my body and training. For ages, all genders were told to follow the same general nutrition advice. Early studies were conducted on men, and the results were sadly generalized to women. Fast-forward to today where we are (thankfully) acknowledging that women are unique physiological beings. We have very different nutritional needs compared to men- especially when it comes to training! Implementing a few changes has already helped my training, recovery, and overall energy levels, so I’m excited to continue to experiment as I progress and need more nutritional support. Wanting to get fit and healthy is amazing, but if you are going to seek the help of a coach to work through whatever challenge you might be struggling with on your own, there are a few important things to take into account, which are usually not paid enough attention to and which can trip you up if left to chance: ❓ Are you ok with being told to try something new? ❓ Have you prepared your mind for the frustrations of being a beginner? ❗Really, thats an important one. Beginning means sucking for a long time. This is worth thinking about. ❓ Do you trust the coach you have chosen? ❓ Does your coach invest in further education? ⁉️ Did you check that your coach is skilled in BOTH training and in teaching? ⁉️ Is your coach an effective communicator? What they know means little if they cannot get it out of their head and into yours. ⁉️ Do you get along? A coachs job is to push you and make you face less comfortable things. It is important that you gel. --- Training is movement, while coaching is a relationship, and you need to select your coach according to your personality and sense of humour just as much as for their skill and knowledge. Trainers are often told that anyone can be a client - I agree that it is possible, but believe that is not wise advice. If I have to worry about not swearing and if you think geek references are lame and frown at dozens of piercings then we wont get along, and even though I know my s***, Im probably not the right fit for you. Part one of my two part mini series to over head pressing progressions. New to working out? Limited shoulder stability? Coming back from injury? Try these guidelines laid out by the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) to build yourself back up to over head exercises. . Half kneeling Single-Arm Landmine Y press: Start from a half kneeling position to provide stability throughout the lower body. Pull the ribs down to engage your core adding additional stability to allow the shoulder to press out in the Y positioning. . Half Kneeling Single-Arm Landmine Press: Begin in the half kneeling position with the shoulders slightly in front of the hips. Create tension and stability in the position. Press your hand through the knee to add additional support. Brace through your spine and press the barbell forward in a semi lunar pattern. . Half Kneeling Single-Arm Neutral-Grip Dumbbell Press: A neutral grip will have the palm facing the ear in the starting position. Brace prior to pressing over head. By maintaining a neutral position the weight will stay closer to the body increasing the safety of the lift. . Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries seen in the athletic population, especially in sports involving a lot of jumping or quick changes in direction, such as basketball or tennis. 🏀🎾 Ankle sprains occur when you roll or twist your ankle awkwardly in a way that stretches or tears the surrounding ligaments or tendons (usually this is on the outside of the foot). _ _ Individuals who have poor ankle stability are more prone to suffering sprains or tears, as they are less able to control the quick changes in position of the ankle during dynamic movements. Thankfully both sensory feedback and muscle activation can be trained to improve stability with specific training!! 💪 Here are some single leg balance drills designed to improve proprioception, stability and strength around the ankle. A good old fashioned leg workout. Recently I’ve been working more on my cardio/conditioning and I’ve been less focused on the lifting portion of my workouts. My lifting days all look similar to this - higher reps and light-moderate weight. I also haven’t done any barbell bench press, back/front squats, or conventional/sumo deadlifts at all. Very challenging, very rewarding session. I also immediately felt ravenously hungry. The solution? A few spoonfuls of jam from the jar before the last rep. Push up variations! Hey guys! Hope everyone is doing their best so stay active during these times. Here is a post showing you a few different ways you can spice up your push ups! 1. Regular push up 2. Wide push up 3. Diamond push up 4. Alternating push up 5. Mountain climber push ups Each of these variations are difficult in their own way. You can also perform these on your knees to make them easier. Find the rep and set range which suits your ability. If some of these are too hard to control then start on your knees and build up to performing them on feet. Yesterday I promised myself I’d get in the gym for a lift no matter what… but before I realised it was 1715 on a Friday afternoon, feeling mentally and physically exhausted from a lack of sleep since the arrival of our little man on Monday earlier this week. I’d spent the morning working with clients, lunchtime running errands and the afternoon at the laptop taking care of paperwork. I realised I had a 10minute window to do something before I needed to be on the road and home in time to put my two daughters to bed, but my body was in a hole! Quick body status check ? Energy - low, Brain - running on caffeine, Eyes - proped open w/ cocktail sticks, Joints - cranky, Muscles - flat 🥴 Clearly not a day to push! What you can see is 7minutes worth of restorative breathing (condensed). 2x5 breath reps of cat stretch (all fours breathing). 2x5 breath reps of wall hammy bridge w/ reach. Followed by 2 quick sets of chins and guns (*not included), because its Friday 😉 Over the past 7 years I’ve placed increasing stock on breath work to restore movement, improve muscle tone and turn down the autonomic nervous system. It’s a not a fix all method, but it is a pretty effective one when used at the right time. Horses for courses. Interested to hear more about how I apply breath work? A dica dos joelhos para fora é um estimulo verbal dado principalmente nos exercícios de agachamento , executar o exercício desta forma é de extrema importância para uma boa técnica ,segurança e eficiência . Na verdade, a dica tem o intuito de fazer com que os joelhos não girem para dentro ou fiquem sem estabilidade. Os problemas relacionados ao valgo dinâmico são mais pronunciados em mulheres principalmente pelo fato de em sua grande maioria possuírem o quadril com uma largura maior o que faz com que naturalmente o fêmur fique em um ângulo que favorece o problema. Neste caso pode ser interessante a execução dos exercícios de agachamento com maior espaçamento entre as pernas. Agachar executando o movimento de joelhos para dentro ou valgo dinâmico pode ao longo do tempo provocar diversas condropatias (problemas relacionados ao joelho) . POSSÍVEIS CAUSAS SEUS GLUTEOS - Fraqueza ou falta de ativação do glúteo médio (a porção lateral do glúteo).O glúteo médio é responsável pela rotação externa do quadril (joelhos para fora) quando isso não ocorre o joelho cede indo para dentro e isso pode acarretar em desgastes no menisco gerando dores e inflamações inclusive piorando ou desencadeando problemas de condropatia (problemas no joelho). “AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!” At least that’s what it can sound like in our head. Despite many saying I’m one of the happiest, positive injured people they’ve ever met, I definitely face the same thing. I have absoLUTELY felt the weight of a knee injury that is now going to require surgery and extended recovery time. • Pain or injury is never fun. But it can sure heighten the sense of feeling: - depressed - sad - frustrated - downright angry - “Why me? Why this? Why now?” And those feelings can get overwhelming. They make it challenging to focus on anything else BUT the pain or injury. • Think about it though. That’s EXACTLY what it’s doing: heightening the intensity of our focus. It is, however, up to us to choose where we then direct that focus. • It’s not about ignoring or suppressing all those emotions we experience. In fact DON’T! They are a part of the process. They are a part of the guidance and discovery. Acknowledge them, accept them... but work through them. Don’t succumb to them. • We are feeling these for a reason. Use them as the ‘signposts’, the ‘breadcrumbs’, the ‘tracks’ to discovering WHY you are feeling them so intensely. What is the injury: - limiting - holding you back from - keeping out of reach Use the intensity of focus that the current pain or injury is giving you access to, amidst an attention grabbing world of distraction, to go deeper in your Journey. SINGLE ARM DB PRESS ⬇️ Weight ⬆️ Stability Challenge I like this exercise due to the requirement to stabilise the pelvis. A classic can’t fire a cannon from a canoe. On a recent trip to the US I was asked to look at an #NFL player struggling with one side while bench pressing. When we stripped him back using this exercise with lighter loads - he found it really difficult to maintain trunk stability to enable him to perform a unilateral press. So what was going on when he managed to lift heavier weights using a bar? The ability to use the other arm and to hide compensatory strategies when you use a bar means that sometimes it is preferable to assess athletes using dumbbell press variations. 1. Single Arm Press (as shown) 2. Alternate DB Press 3. DB Press The trunk and pelvic stability challenge in the single arm press with your hips and back off the bench will assist with identification of those athletes that need to focus on connecting their lower body through their trunk and into their upper body. Strong Lets think about that word for a second. It was never my focus until a few years ago. I always desired to be skinny, but never thought about strong. Then in came a invitation to try a week trial of jazzercise classes. I was instantly hooked. After diving in I desired to be strong and healthy, that became my focus.
