7 Ways Getting Over Your Ex Is Like Trying to Lose Weight


Fat loss 101 Fat loss is the process of the body breaking down stored energy and utilizing it as fuel. For this process to take place your body needs to be in a deficit of energy. This can be achieved by ensuring intake of food and/or your output is below your maintenance. Day to day activity, exercise and the general running of your body which is known as the basal metabolic rate or BMR all play a role. Your BMR includes things such as breathing, circulation, nutrient processing and cell production. All the things that would still occur if you were to do absolutely nothing. One popular way to estimate bmr is through the Harris-Benedict formula, which takes into account weight, height, age, and gender. Women: BMR = 655 + (9.6 × weight in kg) + (1.8 × height in cm) – (4.7 × age in years) Men: BMR = 66 + (13.7 × weight in kg) + (5 × height in cm) – (6.8 × age in years) Once you have calculated your bmr the next task would be to add in your typical activity to the equation in the form of calories burned: * - Sedentary. Minimal or no exercise, multiply bmr by 1.2 * - Lightly active. If you exercise moderately 3-5 days a week, multiply bmr by 1.375 * - Moderately. Active, if you exercise 3-5 days as week, multiply bmr by 1.55 * - Very active. If you engage in hard exercise 6-7 days a week, multiply your bmr by 1.725 * - Extra active. If you engage in very hard exercise 6-7 days a week or have a physical job multiply your bmr by 1.9 The final number is approximately how many calories you need on a daily basis to maintain your weight. Of course, this is an estimate, and this would be made more accurate if we included body composition, lifestyle etc. However, this is a great place to start. Now if all that seems like too much work. An alternative would be to track your current calories and take your weight at the start and end of the week. Has weight increased, decreased or is it stable? This will tell a story. SINGLE ARM DB PRESS ⬇️ Weight ⬆️ Stability Challenge I like this exercise due to the requirement to stabilise the pelvis. A classic can’t fire a cannon from a canoe. On a recent trip to the US I was asked to look at an #NFL player struggling with one side while bench pressing. When we stripped him back using this exercise with lighter loads - he found it really difficult to maintain trunk stability to enable him to perform a unilateral press. So what was going on when he managed to lift heavier weights using a bar? The ability to use the other arm and to hide compensatory strategies when you use a bar means that sometimes it is preferable to assess athletes using dumbbell press variations. 1. Single Arm Press (as shown) 2. Alternate DB Press 3. DB Press The trunk and pelvic stability challenge in the single arm press with your hips and back off the bench will assist with identification of those athletes that need to focus on connecting their lower body through their trunk and into their upper body. 𝗔𝗗𝗗𝗨𝗖𝗧𝗢𝗥 𝗠𝗢𝗕𝗜𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗬: Your groin can be a scary place, especially if you dont take good care of it. If youve spent time in gyms or therapy clinics, youve probably heard a lot about the quadriceps (rectus femoris, rectus medialis, rectus lateralis, rectus intermedius) and hamstrings (biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus). You probably havent heard people talk about their adductors very much. Why not? In my opinion, people talk less about their adductors because the anatomy isnt very well understood. Your adductor group contains five primary muscles: pectineus, adductor brevis, adductor longus, adductor magnus, and gracilis. Tendinopathies in this muscle group are common because we dont stress them as frequently as our quadriceps or hamstrings groups, and most of us certainly dont exercise them. To stay limber and reduce injury risk, try implementing some basic adductor mobility exercises into your morning stretch routine or post-gym cooldown. These are a few of my favorites, and they might help you find some imbalances. Ill be posting more about adductor mobility with some more advanced techniques soon, so stay tuned. Compound lifts will engage your Abs and will strength your core. Compound exercises such as Squats, Bench Press, Overhead Press and Deadlifts. ✅ AB EXERCISES - Even though Compound Lifts engages your Core, it doesn’t directly hit the Ab muscles we want to see pop. The “six pack” muscles you want to target are the ‘Rectus Abdominis’ and the Obliques muscles. To target the Rectus Abdominis (Six Pack) my favourite exercises are Hanging Leg Raises, Decline Bench Sit-Ups, Decline Bench Reverse Crunches and Weighted Crunches. To target the Obliques (muscles in the Luther surface of your Abs) my favourite exercises are Oblique Twists (Medicine Ball), Cable Wood-chops and Bicycle Crunches. ✅ The decline bench is a great way to keep constant tension on the Abs and not involve any other muscles. Be sure to keep engage your keep with every rep and control each rep. For example; on the decline bench sit ups do not let your hip flexor muscles just swing you up. Keep your core tight on the lowering phase then on the way up breath out slowly. Add this technique to your routine and you will notice a huge difference. Yesterday I promised myself I’d get in the gym for a lift no matter what… but before I realised it was 1715 on a Friday afternoon, feeling mentally and physically exhausted from a lack of sleep since the arrival of our little man on Monday earlier this week. I’d spent the morning working with clients, lunchtime running errands and the afternoon at the laptop taking care of paperwork. I realised I had a 10minute window to do something before I needed to be on the road and home in time to put my two daughters to bed, but my body was in a hole! Quick body status check ? Energy - low, Brain - running on caffeine, Eyes - proped open w/ cocktail sticks, Joints - cranky, Muscles - flat 🥴 Clearly not a day to push! What you can see is 7minutes worth of restorative breathing (condensed). 2x5 breath reps of cat stretch (all fours breathing). 2x5 breath reps of wall hammy bridge w/ reach. Followed by 2 quick sets of chins and guns (*not included), because its Friday 😉 Over the past 7 years I’ve placed increasing stock on breath work to restore movement, improve muscle tone and turn down the autonomic nervous system. It’s a not a fix all method, but it is a pretty effective one when used at the right time. Horses for courses. Interested to hear more about how I apply breath work? 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡𝗦: Getting tired of standard planks? This post is for you. Planks are one of the best exercises you can perform for sports performance, aesthetics, and rehabilitation. 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲𝘀, once youre able to perform them easily with great technique, you should consider implementing new moves and/or equipment. When youre training 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 and endurance, you can progress an exercise with extremity (arm/leg) movements or dynamic surfaces (foam, Bosu ball, sliders), which create 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Some of my favorites in the clinic are alternating foot/hand lifts, and some of my favorites in the gym are weight pull-throughs and Bosu ball marches (post on Bosu ball techniques coming next week). Even though youre adding instability to your exercise, you should remain stable. If youre wobbling around like a baby deer, 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 and meet yourself halfway. You need to set your self up for success, but still feel like you challenged yourself after that 30-60 second set. Shout out to all the mums just trying to get it done. I had a client this morning, also a mum and we were discussing the unrealistic expectations we place on ourselves. What I like to tell my clients is, ‘do what you can do’. There are times of the year/season (like preseason) when you can afford to programme exercises which promote high levels of muscle soreness and system fatigue, such as, sprints, eccentrics and intensive plyo’s. Conversely, the competition phase is a period when we need to maintain doses of high strain exercises in a programme, combined with lower physical options with the goal to optimise adaptations from the sport/training. During these periods, 80% of my programming will come from lower physical cost exercises that offer a high return on strength, mechanics and motion, minus the stress. Like the exercise used in this example. The goblet loaded step up is an accessory lift in my toolbox with a host of benefits pictured. Overtime, I’ve become a bigger proponent of surfing the curve with loaded variations that spare joints with clever positioning and loading. Sport takes enough out of these regions as it is, why keep taking more...? Every exercise has a cost and a benefit for your efforts - the devil is in the details.
