“What exercises should I be doing to lose weight/fat?” • I get asked this a lot, and have asked myself this a lot over the years, googling till my fingers fell off and ending up with workouts that had me doing a lot of jumping and running, leaving me feeling totally depleted (not my fave) • The truth is is that there is no one perfect exercise that will help you lose weight more than another-not even the ones I named above. But I name these exercises above because they are ones that use multiple muscle groups at one time-they are “compound” exercises. And hence the ones that will give you you’re biggest return on value. • They are also exercises that will help to build muscle-which if you look back to my post last week(directly below this one!), can help you increase your RMR and help you burn more calories even while at rest. • You can do Zumba, you can run, you can do yoga-but I do believe these exercises should make up the bulk of your training protocol if you are looking for fat loss that results in an overall “toned” body. • Do these consistently and correctly while maintaining your caloric deficit and you will see the simplicity that can come with weight/fat loss. • It isn’t always easy-but it can be uncomplicated! just a normal girl back in therapy, here to stomp the shit out of the stigma 🤙🏼 . Although I’ve been doing the social media thing for a minute, I’m always a little scared to open up about things that society deems taboo. . The perspective that someone in therapy is an emotional wreck is, well, unfounded & quite the opposite imo. I love taking care of myself and bettering myself from the inside out in all aspects of life. . A LOT OF YOU wanted to know how I found a therapist. While my answer isn’t that helpful it kinda is. Basically I had an OBGYN appointment and when the doctor asked me if I was experiencing any anxiety, my eyes swelled up and was trying to hold back my actual answer in order to get through my appointment quickly, so he waited until I told my truth which was that I was feeling a overwhelmed lately. He talked to me about possibly seeing someone because we all need a “paid friend” and referred me to his own therapist. . He was the first doc in my life to kinda actually give a hoot about me as a whole person...which was an amazing feeling. We have all had A YEAR. And while I have 1) been very fortunate 2) made a pivot and made the most of my situation, I STILL NEED TO TALK THINGS THROUGH. THERE IS NO SHAME IN ASKING FOR HELP. . I make sure to get in my steps for this reason, and yes steps are enough 👏🏼 If you’re using cardio to loose weight, that is totally fine but do know it’s not necessarily 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 needed. Loosing weight is ALL about calories In vs calories out. Input vs output. If you’re burning more / consuming less calories than you maintain at, you will loose and vice versa. It does not matter how you burn the calories. It can be through walking, weight lifting, yoga, Pilates, HIIT... you name it. Bottom line, don’t force yourself to do a certain form of exercise if you don’t enjoy it because you think you NEED it. Plantar Fasciitis: More than rolling a ball under your feet - Plantar Fasciitis (PF) is associated w/ increased heel pain first thing in the morning and aggravated by increased activity. The problem can be a frustrating process to go through as it seems like most advice is to roll the bottom of your foot and massage your calves. While it may help manage symptoms it does little to remove the cause. - What Your Foot Should Do: •The foot works in 3 dimensions. You should be able to plant the big toe down, maintain an arch and counter rotate the hip. •Can you lift your toes up? It should be pretty easily done, if not, then rolling the ball underneath may be beneficial •Can you rotate the foot completely and under control? (Ankle CARs) - The Arch •All this is to help the arch of your foot absorb forces. Specially flexor hallucis Brevis and abductor halicius aids in balance. •If you can’t control the foot, you can’t transmit power into your large muscles. •The Plantar fascia acts as restraint for foot. So when foot twists excessively creating more of a strain at insertion leading to more irritation. •Teach muscle and tendon how to stabilize and not over working the plant fascia. •If you have constant strain on one side side, it generally means there’s excessive length on the opposite. Apply this principle to an injury you’re familiar with and you get a better understanding of needing balance. - What to do: Big Toe stretch and raises •Roll a towel up and place the toes up into extension. Then stretch •A progression to that is doing a calf raise while the toes are in an extended position. - Eccentric drop •Stand on a step and control yourself down. •Count out to yourself 4-6 seconds coming down before pressing back up - PAILSs and RAILs for Plantar Fascia •Improve loading by getting into a deep toe extended position as shown •Hang our in position for 1-2 min. •Pails: slowly starting pressing the toes into the floor. Breathing deeply and creating full body tension. Hold 10s •Rails: try to lift the toes up, you should feel tension through the top of the foot. We all know someone who lost weight on a particular diet. “I didn’t eat carbs for 2 months and lost 25 lbs!” “Intermittent Fasting made me lose 30 lbs” They attribute the weight loss to the diet and not the calorie deficit. That’s totally fine. A calorie deficit doesn’t need any credit. That’s why there’s no single “calorie deficit diet” ALL diets are “calorie deficit diets” If I drop a weight. Does it hit the ground because I dropped it? Or because of gravity? Without gravity, it would have just floated there right? So with all of these methods, a calorie deficit is why people lose weight just like gravity was why the weight hit the ground. Perhaps an oversimplification but I want to make sure you understand the true reason why different methods work The key is choosing which one you can stick with long term. That is the “best” method for you. So think about what is important for you before jumping in to a weight loss plan or diet. Once you figure that out, not only will you lose the weight... This is usually the phase where youre working 𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 gravity or some pulley system. Most people work hard through this motion, then relax and whip back to the starting position. The 𝗲𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 of an exercise is defined as the portion where your muscle is lengthening. This is usually the phase where youre working to 𝗺𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 gravity or a pulley system in a 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗱 fashion. Most people breeze through this phase, when a lot of stress from your exercise is concentrated into this phase - more stress translates to more adaptation via increased strength, endurance, or hypertrophy. You can modify your workouts very easily by focusing on the eccentric portion of your exercise. An easy and time-tested method is 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 during your eccentric phase - this may seem easy at first, but youll quickly notice that you need to reduce your resistance to maintain the same repetition range. Since this method increases the frequency of micro muscle tears, you might notice more delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) after your workout, so maybe just 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 and branch out from there. Contrary to popular belief, its not necessary to sweat heavily for your workouts to be effective. Sweating is just a way for your body to cool itself down with rising body temperature. Different people sweat in different quantities & it varies depending upon a lot of factors such as body size, age, sweat glands, etc. External factors may also have an impact on sweating (think outdoor workouts in humid climate). So dont sweat it over sweat. Its got nothing to do with your workout efficiency. Just keep your workouts consistent & keep putting in the work. Have a great weekend folks!
