When was the last time you showed your creative self compassion?✨ ⠀⠀ Can you allow yourself to think about being kind to yourself?⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Do you ever show compassion to your creative self? ⠀⠀ I remember when I first asked myself these questions I realised that I really hadn’t at all. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I hadn’t been kind to myself in times of creative darkness. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ I hadn’t really ever shown myself any compassion when I had “creatively failed”. ⠀ ⠀⠀ I only ever thought about how I wasn’t good enough, and beat myself up when I had ‘stuffed’ something up.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ What if I told you neuroscientists have established that the same part of the brain that drives your creativity is activated when we think or act compassionately? ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Surprised? Don’t worry, so was I!⠀🙋🏻♀️⠀ ⠀⠀ When I read this, I was completely staggered. I empathise and feel compassion for other people, I use my brain to convert that empathy into compassion, the same way we can think laterally as a creative, in making connections. In support of the MFA Thesis Virtual Exhibition, we will be highlighting all six MFA students and their work. Our first MFA Spotlight is Jen Olvera. Jen Olvera is a visual artist based in Phoenix, Arizona. She received her BA in Studio Art from Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. Olvera also studied at The American Academy in Rome, Italy, and was a recipient of an artist residency with Chautauqua Institution. Originally from south Texas, Jen moved to the Southwest in 2019, where the vast richness of the desert lands became a significant source of inspiration. Her mixed media works, often on handmade papers, are drawn and painted, stitched, and multi-layered, sometimes 3-dimensional. Olvera exhibited in Texas, California, New York, and Connecticut, and reviewed by Huffpost. My work stems from experiencing the Arizona desert. The landscape’s ambiguity allowed me to enter an imaginary world, in which its plant life became these eccentric beings. Their lives exist intertwined in a state of in-between not necessarily alive or dead, but both, at once. My investigation of that closeness between beauty and death, between male and female, and between belonging and otherness, unfolds a conversation of that experience. So the story behind this photo and my previous one.. I was walking down the road and stopped at an osprey nest to look at and photograph the young ospreys sitting in the nest. Well all of a sudden mom comes flying in out of no where and hovers above me just like this, I snapped a couple pictures and then RAN. Mom of the year award right there. This particular guitar was made back in 2008 after @ArneKrHast and @DennisFano turned their heads around to make the ultimate Neil-guitar, and apart from not being an original 1953 G Gold Top (painted black somewhere down the line), this is as close as possible with all the bells and whistles many of us grew up listening to and dreaming of. Neck and body in solid Honduran mahogany with a German carved maple top, Brazilian rosewood fretboard, Bigsby B5 handbrake and two Lollar pickups (P-90/Firebird) made specifically for this exact guitar - unwaxed and screamy just like you’d want it to, and with a mini switch to bypass the tone circuit when things start to get real. We adore this painting — a relative of Kyle Orlando’s works on paper and sketch book drawings but with paint & oils on canvas. “Overdue Video Tapes & Credit Card Scandal” (2020) is made with oil pencil, oil pastel, acrylic & spray paint on canvas and measures 30”h x 36”w. The composition is fantastic— from the layering of materials and barely there but very much there quality about it, to how he filled the space with a sprawling figure and a miniature one placed perfectly beside it. Sabías que Dave Holland comenzó sus inicios en la música aprendiendo a tocar el ukelele para más tarde comenzar sus estudios con él bajo eléctrico . Después de ver un número de Down Beat donde Ray Brown había ganado la encuesta de la crítica como mejor bajista, Holland fue a una tienda de discos y compró un par de LP con el pianista de acompañamiento de Brown, Oscar Peterson. También compró dos álbumes de Leroy Vinnegar (Leroy Walks! Y Leroy Walks Again) porque el bajista posó con su instrumento en la portada. En una semana, Holland cambió su bajo por un contrabajo y comenzó a practicar con los discos. Además de Brown y Vinnegar, Holland se sintió atraído por los bajistas Charles Mingus y Jimmy Garrison . Al mudarse a Londres en 1964, Holland comenzó a tocar en locales pequeños y estudió con James Edward Merrett, bajista principal de la Philharmonia Orchestra y, más tarde, de la BBC Symphony Orchestra. Merrett lo entrenó para leer a primera vista y luego le recomendó que se postulara a la Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Holland recibió una beca de tiempo completo para el programa de tres años. Sorry for the tease.... Working on one of my new designs today. Due to covid there is a delay on getting my final production parts. These are SO cool they are a thin surface mountable gold foil humbucker. I can do the do them with my Dearmond style coils, or the Guyatone style goils. In this case it is a mix with the Dearmond under the mustache, and my GT under the S half. Installed at @swellsculpture festival today. Very happy with how this piece turned out. This year I tried something a little different and got @olly_yy from @mollusctradingco to make part of the sculpture, he did an awesome job fabricating the butterfly. The sculpture pits fragile beauty against man made destruction. Stoked to capture this pretty moment of a little bird chilling on one of the butterflies antennas, I doubt it realises the humorous juxtaposition it created by landing where it did. - @dionsribs on Instagram

When I decided I wanted one of @kaymaandcos butterfly metal frames 🦋, I honestly didnt have one clear thought in my head about what the finished woven piece would actually look like...I just *knew* Effy would be absolutely tickled to be able to hang one in her room. It wasnt until this past Saturday morning when I was ready to actually start weaving that I asked my husband if he had any ideas for a possible concept and he replied, make it look like a butterfly emerged from one of your weavings......and that was all I needed...(hes pretty cool I think Ill keep him 💛). After nearly four years of continuous work, pre-orders for the new album Omen Faustum will open and the debut video single will be premiered on September 20th. The first music I have released since 2017.. I feel a great sense of both anticipation and trepidation about the first single release, as the particular song I chose to put forth is the most complicated, challenging and difficult piece of music Ive ever worked on..
