𝐌𝐲 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐥⁣ ⁣ I got accepted to med school out of high school through whats known as a BS/MD program, which meant that I went straight from undergrad to med school without having to go through the traditional med school application process at the end of college. In the next series of posts, Ill address some common questions and discuss some of the pros and cons of going the BS/MD route!⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐒/𝐌𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐀/𝐌𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬?⁣ Basically, while you are applying for college as a high school senior, you are also applying to medical school at the same time. You have to interview both at the college and med school that is part of the program. If accepted, you are committing to go to that college and med school. Some programs require you graduate with a BS (bachelors of science) degree while others may also offer the option to graduate with a BA (bachelors of art) degree.⁣ ⁣ 𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐒/𝐌𝐃 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐀/𝐌𝐃 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐬?⁣ -Most programs are 8 years total (4 yrs undergrad + 4 yrs med school).⁣ -There are a couple programs that are condensed into 6 yrs or 7 yrs (usually the undergrad years are shortened to 2-3 yrs while med school remains 4 yrs).⁣ ⁣ 𝐃𝐨 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐂𝐀𝐓?⁣ This largely depends on the program. Some programs dont require any MCAT, while others require you take the MCAT and obtain a score above a certain cutoff.⁣ ⁣ 𝗪𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞?⁣ Based on what I found from looking this up, the acceptance rate ranges from 1% at smaller top tier programs to around 9%.⁣ ⁣ 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬?⁣ Most programs have a minimum GPA requirement and certain classes that you must take while in undergrad. In the future she hopes to become a Physician, more specifically working as an Ob/Gyn! . . . Why Did Kyeisha Choose STEM? I chose STEM after falling in love with chemistry in my high school Honors Chemistry course. I loved how STEM classes were able to answer so many questions about the world around us I didnt know I even had. I was fascinated to learn about everyday natural processes such as the chemical reactions that occur and understand why that happens from an atomic and elemental level. Those interests met my love for helping others and lead me to medicine and to now study processes in our bodies from a cellular and molecular level. As I finish out my last year in college, STEM continues to challenge and excite me! . . . What is Kyeishas Greatest Piece of Advice? I think some of the best advice Ive gotten is to be unapologetically yourself! I think often times there are these stereotypes of what being in STEM looks like that us Black STEM Queens dont always fit into - but embracing all that I am and being myself rather than conform or try to fit in has been the best step to flourishing as a student in STEM. Read on for tips I use when I look at an abdominal CT...⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👨🏽‍💻Coming into radiology as someone who was mainly concerned with what was going on above the diaphragm I found the world of abdominal CT fairly daunting. But by getting to grips with the anatomy of the abdomen things became a whole lot clearer ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👨🏽‍💻At this level of the abdomen we get a nice demonstration of the superior mesenteric artery – we can’t see the superior mesenteric vein here but normally the vein should lie to the right of the artery at the level of the pancreas, if this is reversed then consider intestinal malrotation which can predispose to midgut volvulus⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👨🏽‍💻I always check to see there is a clean layer of fat surrounding the SMA – if this is infiltrated consider a malignant pathology such as a pancreatic tumour⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👨🏽‍💻Always follow the vessels no matter which CT it is you’re looking at, be it head, neck, chest or abdomen. I always follow the portal veins within the liver formed at the confluence by the splenic vein (which runs posterior to the pancreas) and the superior mesenteric vein which runs vertically. In patients with liver cirrhosis and pancreatitis in particular you are looking for a filling defect or occluded vessel representing thrombosis⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 👨🏽‍💻There aren’t many retroperitoneal structures that cross the midline but the left renal vein is one of them – characteristically this passes anterior to the aorta from the left kidney to the IVC but in some people this can have a retroaortic course where it passes behind the aorta. I have seen the occasional incidental left renal vein thrombosis so it is worth checking for filling defects! This is a must in cases of renal cell carcinoma which likes to spread into the IVC via the renal veins⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🔻@theradiologistpage - @theradiologistpage on Instagram

Let’s talk about Vital Signs! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🏩 Vital signs provide us with critical information needed to make treatment decisions. Above are the normal ranges for ADULT vital signs. Have these values memorized, you will need them for the rest of your nursing career! 🩺 We typically monitor our patient’s vital signs q4h, q8h or q12h (1-3 times) every shift but it varies for every patient! Know your patient’s baseline vitals - it will be easier for you to determine any abnormal values. I like to take a look at the patient’s chart prior to the start of the shift to make note of their previous vitals. Remember each patient will have different baseline values depending on their current health and health history. ❗️ Remember: patients with COPD often have lower oxygen saturation and the range between 88-92% is normal and safe. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 👩🏻‍⚕️ Nursing students: report any abnormal values to your clinical instructor or your nurse. When we moved to Irving and I decided to join a practice in Lewisville, I realized I wanted to know more about the schools in the area and get a feel for the culture of the teachers that would be teaching my patients and kids. I searched online and found great and encouraging information about Carrollton-Farmers Branch, Irving and Lewisville school districts. I also looked up several teachers and administrators While I expected to get good information, I never expected to learn a concept that I hope to incorporate into my medical practice, but that is exactly what happened. I followed an educator on Twitter (@LaurenBibby) who is the Technology Integration Specialist for Lewisville ISD (@LewisvilleISD) and she has since “introduced” me to a concept known as the flipped classroom (even though she doesn’t know it yet). Wikipedia describes flipped learning as “a form of blended learning in which students learn new content online by watching video lectures, usually at home, and what used to be homework (assigned problems) is now done in class with teachers offering more personalized guidance and interaction with students, instead of lecturing.” So, students watch lectures at home in the afternoon then come to school the next day to do homework and other projects during class time. This gives the teacher time and opportunity to address what the student doesn’t understand from the lectures rather than have students turn to their parents for their Calculus homework (when dad had trouble passing Algebra). So, how does this apply to me and my practice? I’d like to have more patients to do “flipped check-ups.” In the flipped classroom, student listen to lectures at home and come prepared to do work and application related to the material. In a flipped check-up, parents would read and learn about the upcoming checkup (check out this page on my blog: Check-Ups for an example), develop specific questions and then allow me to get into deeper, higher-level education when they come in for their check-up... I want to encourage you to keep fighting for your best life.⁣ ⁣ When circumstances make you lose hope in anything getting better, or make you lose hope in the dreams you hold in your heart, don’t allow that to steal your faith.⁣ ⁣ There will be times where we all feel hopeless and discouraged about where our lives are headed. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve been there so many times, especially the past year. I had one thing after another just take me deeper into doubt. ⁣ It felt agonizing to allow the beliefs into my mind that what I was going through was my final destination. ⁣ ⁣ But even though I had begun to lose my hope, I held strongly onto my faith. Faith that no matter what I was going through and feeling, that God would show up in my life because he loves me and because he is good.⁣ ⁣ And month after month, loss after loss, I kept holding onto that faith, and finally, everything changed. ⁣ For the better. ⁣ I began to develop wisdom and clarity on what steps I needed to take and choices I need to stand firm in for my future and my happiness. ⁣ I began to be molded into my purpose self.⁣ And the doors began opening for me. ⁣ ⁣ God gave me an incredible job that will set the foundation for my career in medicine, that will grow me and teach me how to be a better future doctor, and that will show me what it means to be respected and acknowledged in a professional environment. ⁣ ⁣ God opened doors in other areas of my life as well that are being walked through right now. And I still can’t believe what’s before my eyes. ⁣ ⁣ If you are in a season, or year of hopelessness or discouragement, hold on. Don’t give up. On God, on your faith, or on yourself. ⁣ Your best life awaits you and it’s right around the corner waiting for you to walk towards it. ⁣ If something isn’t happening in your life, cultivate gratitude, because that usually means it’s not meant for you. But rather something incredibly better is coming next. ⁣ Never lose your gratitude for life. ⁣ Because once you lose it, it’s very challenging to see the beauty and goodness that is being unfolded right before your eyes. ⁣ Good always comes.
