Haitian Vodou played a pivotal role in the Haitian revolution. Women were at the forefront in battle against the enslavement and colonization of Haiti. This meant calling into Lwa’s (spirits). One The of the main Lwa’s that were called on was Ezili Dantòr. Ezili Dantor known traits are protection specifically of women and children. My great great great great great grandfather, Cupid Plummer (1720-????) fought in the American Revolutionary War as a draft substitution for his enslaver, Thomas Ramsey Hodges. Cupid is the first recorded Plummer. Cupid was freed in 1790 and his wife and children were later set free in 1797. Their oldest son however, Barney Plummer (1766-????), was married to Sarah Norris, a woman enslaved by George Calvert and Rosalie Stier Calvert. Even though Barney Plummer was a free man, the law stated that Black children inherited the status of their mother. Their son, my great great great grandfather, Adam Francis Plummer (1819-1905), was therefore born enslaved. Adam’s children were also born enslaved. I have no photos of Cupid Plummer, but the woman pictured here is Nellie Arnold Plummer (1860-1933), my great great aunt, beside her twin brother Robert. My family has access to these stories in part, because Nellie published a book in 1927 based on the diary of her father, Adam. Even though Cupid Plummer was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War, my family continued to be enslaved until 1864 on the Riversdale Plantation, almost 100 years after the war. Independence Day is only a celebration of Independence for white American men. “What, to the American slave, is your 4th of July?” - @jpthe3 on Instagram

#pierresangpatriot #pierretendean #pahlawanrevolusi #gugurbunga #tendean #g30spki #g30spki1965 #1965 #kaptenpierretendean #nasution #abdulharisnasution #pahlawanbangsa #jasmerah - @vz_pierre on Instagram

“Black girls should not only be visible when we are mourning them. They should be visible when they’re living and joyous” • • Yesterday marked the 57th anniversary of the bombing of 16th St Baptist Church (planted by members of the KKK) that resulted in the death of 4 Black girls- Addie Mae Collins, Denise McNair, Carole Robertson & Cynthia Wesley. • • According to SLPC, Addie Mae Collins was an outgoing, artistic girl who sold aprons and potholders that her mother stitched together to make ends meet. Denise McNair performed in plays, dance routines and poetry readings to raise money for muscular dystrophy research. Carole Robertson was a good student who loved reading and dancing. She sang in the chorus and played the clarinet. Cynthia Wesley excelled in math, reading and band. • • These girls LIVED, and as Black girls do so often, thrived in circumstances that actively work to marginalize them. Their lives are not only about their death. What if our world celebrated them when they were living and joyous, and not just in their death? What if our world offered Black girls a way to thrive, and not merely survive? • • On the 57th Anniversary of their death, Black womxn rallied together to show up for Black girls. I am overwhelmed with emotion about the Black Girl Billion Fund. The timeliness and intention is too powerful to articulate. All we can say is thank you. • CALL TO ACTION: Share + Amplify + Support this Fund. Let’s work to create the world Black girls have ALWAYS deserved for little girls in honor our these precious 4 little girls. @blackgirlfreedomfund • #blackgirlfreedomfund #justiceforblackgirls #blackgirlsdeserve #protectblackgirls #1billionforblackgirls - @justice4blackgirls on Instagram

Tales of the Archives- Pearl City 🍍”Old Time Fun”. 📻 By the 1930s-50s, most Pearl City residents were employed in August Butts green bean fields which once covered much of what is now “West Boca.” It was a hard life and even the children worked in the fields during harvest time. Many Pearl City residents also lacked running water and electricity; things we take for granted today. Nonetheless, they knew how to enjoy themselves. Walter Dolphus recalled: “Well, the kids always played ball; and I never forget years ago of a marble range . . . was right in the center of Dixie Highway, and now you can’t even walk across it. A car would pass by probably every four or five hours. So that’s where we used to make up our marble range, right in the middle of Dixie Highway between 11th and 12th Streets. Right in the middle of Dixie Highway.” Amos Jackson had this memory: “We used to celebrate the 20th of May here [that is Florida’s “Emancipation Day”]. That’s the day that we were told that the slaves were freed. … The 20th of May was a big day to us. We’d have big baseball games, picnics on the beach and Collin Spain used to carry his juke box, or piccolo as we called it, on the beach; and he had a generator, and they called it a dynamo at the time, that would provide the electrical service for the box. We used to have music on the beach, swimming, ice cream, and sandwiches. Later on in the day we would have baseball games.” Irene Demery Carswell recalled the pleasures of a box supper: “Well this is boxes that the ladies would fix with food, and the men would buy these boxes. This was one of the recreational parties that they had. The men would buy the box maybe for fifty cents or seventy-five cents at the most. And then, for instance, if I made a box and you liked my box, I had this box all decorated with crepe paper, etc. And sometimes there’d be big boxes and little boxes, and they had fried chicken and potato salad and maybe some collard greens, or some homemade rolls, or maybe made a cake. You put enough for two in the box. For instance if you bought my box, you and I would sit and eat whether we were married or not. #continuedincomments - @bocahistory on Instagram

My Grandmother was born in Yazoo County, Mississippi on August 25, 1927.  She was the oldest of 10 children.  She married twice and had one child, my mother, who proceeded her in death.  She was the daughter of sharecroppers, and the grand daughter of slaves on both her maternal and paternal sides.  She attended the Little Red School House until 8th grade, and then she worked in the fields picking cotton.  It was said that she could pick as much as any man- which is no small feat.  She married at 18 and had my mother at 20.  She was a maid for 40 years.  She loved the Lord all the days of her life.  She could cook better than most.  She could clean better than most.  She could laugh harder than most.  She could shoot, kill, and cook anything.  She was quick to laugh and quick to cuss.  She loved hard.  She was fiercely stubborn, and fiercely loyal.  She and I were close in some ways, and different in others.  She found me sometimes to be too “citified” and I don’t think she ever forgave me for not knowing how to properly shoot a double barrel shotgun.  I told her as a child (age 6)...that my temperament was too bad for that.  She laughed because she said I was always baby-fied.  Rest in Heaven Grandma.  I love you. - @tonyamichelle on Instagram

This morning I again woke up thinking about Saturdays Black Lives Matter protests and how thousands rallied in support of Indigenous Australians over a long weekend that at its core, celebrates imperialism and colonialism, both of which are systems of oppression. June 3rd was the 28th anniversary of the Mabo judgement, a historic day that unjustly passes with little to no fanfare...yet a week later, in every state theres a long weekend to celebrate an imperial institution that willing endorsed the genocide of Indigenous Australians...And why? So captains of industry and billionaire philanthropists can peacock around with their ACs and AOs? Surely I cant be the only one who sees this public holiday as antiquated and out of step with modern Australia. Why do we continue to celebrate someone who has no impact on modern Australia, when we could celebrate a judgement that reshaped Australia and the people who fought for legal recognition of Indigenous peoples rights? To date we have not had a public holiday that acknowledges Indigenous people and which recognises our contribution, achievements and survival in Australia. A public holiday would be a celebration all Australians can share in with pride – a celebration of truth that unites Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and a celebration of justice that overturned the legal myth of terra nullius - Mabo symbolises truth and justice and is a cornerstone of Reconciliation, Eddie Mabo Jnr. To move forward as a nation, we need to address the injustices perpetrated against Indigenous Australians, both past and present. So why cant the Queens Birthday long weekend be replaced with the Mabo Long Weekend? Idk if this suggestion is overly simplified, yet I do know that we need to acknowledge the First Nations people...could shifting the focus to a long weekend of, dedicated reflection on and celebration of, Indigenous culture not be a step in the right direction towards reconciliation? I cant seem to reconcile Eddie Mabo Jnrs reflection that our country needs a celebration of truth that unites Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians whilst we still have a public holiday that celebrates a horserace! - @mf_pr on Instagram

Join us for the next session of our popular Figure Drawing program on Wednesday October 7! We are offering two options for this class: 1) a small group session in the museum’s outdoor Holly Court OR 2) a virtual session on Zoom. Both options require pre-registration and are offered on a “Pay-What-You-Can” basis. All ranges of drawing experience are welcome, including sketchers who are trying this for the first time. IN PERSON To comply with social distancing rules this class will be limited to 15 sketchers and held outdoors in the museum’s Holly Court. Facial masks are required and participants will sketch six feet apart. The Holly Court is on the northwest side of the museum, near the end of the museum’s driveway and opposite the Levitt Shell. Sketchers are asked to bring their own drawing materials, including paper, pencils, and drawing boards. Stools will be provided. ---------------- VIRTUAL There is no class size limit for the virtual portion of the event, and multiple people may join in from each household. Harriet Tubman, notable conductor on the underground railroad, maintained strong ties to Boston throughout her life. Visiting the city numerous times, Tubman often met with abolitionists and women’s rights activists alike. The Liberator noted her participation in Boston suffrage events as early as 1860, when Tumban, called ‘Moses,’ attended a woman’s rights convention and “told the story of her adventures in a modest but quaint and amusing style, which won much applause.” The Woman’s Journal also recorded several occasions local suffragists welcomed Tubman. An April 1897 edition of the publication recounted a reception presided over by Ednah D. Cheney in which many people connected to both the abolitionist and suffrage movements attended. Tubman’s words reflecting on her life, The Journal observed, “left her hearers feeling braver and braver.” #SuffrageSaturday #HarrietTubman #VotesForWomen #Suffragent #NPS19th #19thAmendment #UndergroundRailroad #UGRR #UGRRMonth Sources: “Woman’s Rights Meetings,” The Liberator, July 06, 1860. Knowing Lulu White’s story helps us see Beyoncé’s artistic creation within a complex historical framework, for in it are woven together threads of American history: stories of sexual slavery and prostitution; revolution and exile; and, not least, capitalism and the American Dream. Alma Maria Mahler Gropius Werfel’s story felt like the perfect place to begin #pavethewayfridays. Her infamous affairs and reputation as muse and femme fatale (🙄) are consistently a source of spectacle that often overshadows her own artistic genius. Though she was discouraged from composing by Gustav Mahler during their marriage, she tenaciously continued to wield power in the art world and ultimately left her mark as a massive influence on much of the great art of the early 20th century. Much respect to any wom whose draw was so intoxicating that she caused impressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka to commission and later behead a life-size doll of her (swipe for heebie jeebies!). . . . For more on this legendary trailblazer, check out award-winning biographer Cate Haste’s Passionate Spirit: The Life of Alma Mahler (2019 Basic Books), which dares to empower Mahler-Werfel’s story and cast down previous portrayals that paint her as a villain and caricature. #pavethewayfridays #thosewhocamebeforeus #womeninopera #operasingersofinstagram #wio #muse #almamahler - @women_in_opera on Instagram

For World Photography Day may we introduce . . .   Extraordinary Ordinary Pit village life by Jack Hulme Jack Hulme’s photographs of the pit village of Fryston, on the outskirts of Castleford, are a fascinating, unique and revealing record of a mining community in the mid twentieth century. He was born in the village but, after an injury, was unable to work as a miner. When his wife bought him a Leica camera he became the village photographer, and it is for his black and white images that he is now remembered. The enduring charm of his photgraphs is in the capture of the ordinary – domestic chores, playing in the street, the daily grind. From the attitude of his subjects towards him, you can see he was part of the life he was documenting. From the National Strike to the Miners’ Strike he witnessed the passing of the industrial age in Yorkshire. #worldphotographyday #photo #Photography #blackandwhitephoto #bygoneera #dayspast #Fryston #JackHulme #photographer #dailylife #snapshot #explorepage - @wakefieldmuseums on Instagram

Nashville first became known internationally as Music City not for its country music, but because of the Fisk Jubilee Singers.⁣ ⁣ The Jubilee Singers have headlined halls and auditoriums, performing for queens and kings and heads of state, across the country and around the globe for nearly 150 years.⁣ ⁣ Without musical accompaniment, the a cappella troupe has sung as if the very survivability of Fisk University depended upon them. ⁣ ⁣ Follow the link in our bio to read the full story. ⁣ #BPM2020 - @communityfoundationmidtn on Instagram

George Polgreen Bridgetower: An African Prodigy in England 1789-1860. ⁣⁣ An outstanding violinist. Best known for his association with Ludwig van Beethoven, who wrote the piece Kreutzer Sonata just for him to play in 1803 (the full title was Sonata composed for the Mulatto). The composer praised him as “a very capable virtuoso who has a complete command of his instrument”. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He was born in Poland to a West Indian father and German mother. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He moved to London at an early age and was performing in theaters by the age of ten. The scope of Bridgetowers career in Europe becomes apparent when one sees what was written about him in late eighteenth-century English, French, and Austro-German newspapers, memoirs, and journals. By the age of twelve he was recognised by Londons musical intelligentsia as a respected member of its artistic community. By 1799, he performed in approximately fifty publicised concerts as a soloist or a principal musician. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How did Bridgetower overcome some of the obvious racial barriers of his day? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (1) He had an entreprenurial father who brought his son to the attention of the English aristocracy;⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (2) He was so skilful that he gained the unwavering financial support of that aristocracy;⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (3) For his day he had an above average education - a factor that often facilitated the rise up the social ladder in Georgian England; and⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (4) He won the support and friendship of George, Prince of Wales, later George IV of England. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Bridgetower eventually fell out with Beethoven over the snub of a mutual female friend, he obviously deserves much more attention for the contributions he made to Classical music performance.⁣⁣ - @blackmusichistory on Instagram

These flags represent people on every part of the gender and sexuality spectrum in celebration of who they are and their identities. The Rainbow Flag, a symbol of pride and honour of the LGBTQ+ community, devised by Gilbert Baker and inspired by Judy Garlands melodies Over the Rainbow. Each of the eight original colours celebrates an aspect of queer pride symbolising sex, life, healing, sunlight, nature, art, serenity and spirit. It was much later that hot pink was dropped and turquoise and indigo were replaced by blue to symbolise harmony. With increasing needs to break out and own their identities different flags have come into being in the recent years with many feeling more empowered sans labels. #pride #pridemonth #june2020 #enactusindia #enactus #Werisebyliftingothers #lovewins #lgbtq🌈 #marshapjohnson #stonewall #lgbtpride #happypridemonth #celebratinglove - @enactuscvs on Instagram

Oni, Ibejada! Salve, Cosme e Damião! _________________ Conta pra gente as suas memórias dessa festa popular tão carioca! Looking at this picture of my mom (Emily’s grandmother) from the late ‘40s after WWII has really encouraged me the past few weeks. Seeing the strength in her eyes after surviving the war by hiding in the jungles of the Philippines for two years during the Japanese military occupation just makes me realize that “this too shall pass” and that what I am going through because of COVID-19 is nothing new. In fact, I think being quarantined in my nice suburban neighborhood, in my nice home, being able to swim in my nice pool, is not suffering at all compared to what my mom went through. She endured great suffering and saw many horrible things, but she along with her little brother, her dad, and his Filipino family, were able to persevere. She told me that her older male cousins would hide her and the other teenage girls whenever the guerrilla fighters (local Filipino militia) would come into their jungle camps because they would often times rape the teenage girls. Thankfully they were all finally rescued by the U.S Military and she sailed back to America aboard a navy troop ship where she celebrated her 16th birthday. She said her dad had to constantly keep the young sailors away from her as you can see that she was quite a beauty! Those experiences made my mom one of the strongest people I have ever known and her strength lives on in me. #strongwomen #powerfulwomen #vintagestyle #vintagefashion #1940s #perseverance #styleinspo #fashionstyle - @stylecast on Instagram

During the late 1800s, a group of black women decided to form a women’s league committee in New Port, Rhode Island. These five women were dedicated to women’s suffrage and educating others. The leader of this group was Mary Dickerson. As we honor the 100 year anniversary of women’s suffrage, we’d like to commemorate the black women that spoke out and were active during the difficult times that they were facing. As black women were silenced and ignored, they continued educating, writing, and creating. #Forwardintolight - @rancholoscerritos on Instagram

Happy pride month! - @orlandolgbt.gr on Instagram

We’ve created 6 visuals (yes 6 😅) to educate everyone a little on the history of pride colours and pride flags. Did you know that the original 🏳️‍🌈 pride flag had 8 colours, but due to unavailability of pink fabric, and the need to divide pride colours into an even number for a pride parade, turquoise was dropped? Oops! We didn’t forget about you, just a little behind after our weekend recovery! This week on Queer 101! This week, Queer 101 is shedding light on what Trans means. The following information will help those who struggle to identify, are exploring or those that might find themselves in a need of a better understanding. We hope that these resources can contribute to uplifting the Trans Community and educating those who misunderstand it. As always, remember to take a step back and educate yourself if you find you’re struggling in accepting someone who is living through it. Practice language that is not offensive when speaking to an individual in the community, if pronouns are difficult then practice just saying someone’s name in place or use terms that are not bound to female or male identifications. Remind yourself that your expectations are your own, no one elses and having them can lead to disappointment. Keep the possibilities of growth and understanding endless! As always, thanks for listening! What to Black Women is the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage? #OTD August 18th, 1920 the 19th Amendment was ratified. We are reminded of a blog post @wiltforcongress guest wrote for our blog back in February. Robin Wilt writes, “To unerase Black women from the women’s suffrage movement, we must ask ourselves, “What to a Black Woman is the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage?” Then, we must say the names of the women who fought not only for their own suffrage, but by dint of being Black women, inherently fought for universal suffrage.” Say their names. Share their stories. De-center whiteness. Expand the narrative. Ida B. Wells-Barnett Nannie Helen Burroughs Sarah Parker Remond Mary Church Terrell And many more. Have you heard the great news? The Women’s and Gender Studies Department will begin our NEW minor in Sexuality and Queer Studies this Fall 2020! 😃 💞🌈🔥💫 Catalogue description: The minor in Sexuality and Queer Studies centers on the identities and histories of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender-variant people with a particular focus on urban queer identities. The minor examines how assumptions about sexuality and gender are constructed and emphasizes ways to navigate and resist those assumptions through the application of knowledge in a variety of settings including education, healthcare, the workplace, and community organizations. This minor is a perfect complement to majors in Education, Health Sciences, Psychology, Business, Sociology, History, Political Science, English, Media Arts, etc. Our minor is THE ONLY ONE IN NEW JERSEY (!!!) that highlights queer experiences by focusing on urban settings/ communities with an emphasis on applying what you’ve learned in the classroom. #sexualityandqueerstudies #newminor #SQS #lgbtq🌈 #socialjustice #transstudies #queerstudies #lgbtqstudies #njcu #curriculum #socialjusticeeducation Poster design 🎨: @lizatilakdhari - @njcu_wgst on Instagram

Part (2/2) Even during the pandemic, capitalism has changed its face! Eg. for the simple face mask where you spent ₹50, you have to spend ₹120 for solid designed mask and for a printed mask with glitters on it you have ₹200, where as the price of Govt suggested N95 mask you have to spend ₹250-₹300. recently i saw a face mask at Shivan and Narreshs website with fancy bentex gold buttons on it for ₹3500! Theres no doubt that liberalism opts for profit maximization even during this pandemic. You might be able to keep your economy healthy at the cost of someone elses basic labour rights but can this capitalism safeguard you from religious fanatics, fascist and dictators? “the day when youll get marriage rights it will become exclusive marketable brand for elites in LGBTQ community and one who are without the privileges will suffer more!” Even the realm of psychiatry wont be able to heal wounds of capitalist realism because our society is complexed and LGBTQ community is more complexed but when these things like “classy, pure tops, pure bottoms, versatile, no sissy, girlish and only muscular” tags would be commercialised then it would develop a state of estrangement and isolation that one might have to suffer from depression and even commit suicide because of the prejudices and class conflict that would take place in the community after legalising same sex marriages! The Queer activists and organisations have to find the way to get rid of pink capitalism/commercialisation before we opt for Marriage rights else there would be more people like “ambassadors cum actors, Hindutvawadi Amma and someone like Laxmi Tripathi” who would demean our long struggle for rights and sacrifices that we made! In my opinion to prevent this situation, the answer would be “LGBTQ protection rights” instead of going for marriage rights first! #gaythoughts #gayteen #instagay #gaysian #gay #bi #lbgt #gayfriend #gayfollow #capitalism #gaylove #gayindian #socialism #gaysian #homolove #homo #lovelbgt #lbgt #gayquotes #gayinsta #gayberlin #gaylondon #gaynewyork #blackguy #egypt #asiangay #gaysian #instalove #lovebi #afrogay #gaynetworking - @queer_republic on Instagram
