Repost from our friends, @palestinianyouthmovement • The systematic theft of Palestine did not begin on July 1st, nor will the ongoing project of settler colonialism stop after this day. Israel’s plan to formally annex the West Bank is only the latest in a long line of attempts by the Zionist state to consolidate its control over Palestinian territory and to deny the Palestinian people their right to sovereignty and self-determination. We wholly and fiercely reject the annexation plan, and in doing so, recommit ourselves to our continued struggle for national liberation. We must continue to defend Palestine, now and until liberation! #NotoAnnexation #DayofRage #يوم_الغضب #FreePalestine #فلسطين - @center4pe on Instagram

The French buried Dirlewangers body on June 19, 1945. . Il 1º giugno 1945, soldati polacchi inquadrati nelle forze di occupazione francesi erano di guardia nella prigione militare di Altshausen, dove era stato rinchiuso. Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was a 19th century American writer, poet, editor, and literary critic. He was known for his short stories, poetry and tales of mystery and macabre. Some of his famous poems were that of The Raven, Annabel Lee, Alone, A Dream Within A Dream, etc. With his tales he had transformed the genre of horror story into one of psychological depth and insight that was not envisioned in the genre. Much of his work was inspired by events that happened around him. #edgarallanpoe #writer #poetry #19thcenturypoetry - @unknownpoeticastronaut on Instagram

“Chinese Girl Wants Vote,” the New York Tribune caption read. “Miss Lee Ready to Enter Barnard, to Ride in Suffrage Parade.” That “Miss Lee” was Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, Chinese immigrant, feminist, and suffragist, recently featured in the @nytimes’ Overlooked, a series of obits about remarkable people overlooked during their own time. Born around 1895 in Guangzhou, China, Miss Lee moved to New York with her mother around 1905 to join her father, a Christian missionary. The family lived on Bayard Street in Manhattan Chinatown, and Miss Lee would go on to attend @barnardcollege in the fall of 1912. But first things first: she had a march for women’s suffrage to help lead. On horseback. On May 14, 1912, she and other women riders led a march of 10,000 participants, one of the largest in the nation. She would go on to study history and philosophy at Barnard, and write articles in favor of women’s suffrage. She would earn her Ph.D. at Columbia, becoming the first Chinese woman to do so. The right to vote would come to women in 1920. However, Miss Lee would still be denied that right. As a Chinese immigrant living under the Chinese Exclusion Act, she was barred from citizenship and therefore not allowed to practice the right she had fought so hard for. While it’s not clear if she gained citizenship or voted, there’s no doubt she left behind a tremendous, if undersung, legacy. Real change, enduring change, happens one step at a time,” Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said. While we mourn the loss of Justice Ginsburg, we’re buoyed by her legacy and by those of other incredible women who forged the way, like Mabel Ping-Hua Lee. - @pearlrivermart on Instagram

These readers all touch on issues of justice and civil rights AND what cognitive recognition is in images of violence, how and why black lives matter is spread thinly across many levels of social experience and experiment- learning to (un)see what violence and delight in which black bodies are historically and intimately entangled in is an essential foundation to seeing now. @cassandra_press @sisterswithinvoices @blmlosangeles www.cassandrapress.org - @kandis_williams on Instagram

So this week has been extremely exciting for me! Life truly is a full circle moment & things align at the perfect time. I’ve been speaking against this “celebration” of the confederacy since 2017. One of the ways we celebrate or idolize the confederacy are having schools named after them. Well on Tuesday night the Montgomery County Board of Education voted to change the names of Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Sidney Lanier high schools — each named after men who were members of the Confederacy. • • • This effort was led by Amerika Blair, Marche Johnson and I! I know I can speak for all of us when I say we didn’t do this for us but for the generations long after us. A HUGE shoutout to the Freedom Fighters the four men and women who took down the statue at Robert E. Lee to really catapult this moment. Also a huge shoutout to SONG, Southerners on New Ground for giving us the appropriate platform to really push this issue. Read more about the vote w| the link below! https://www.montgomeryadvertiser.com/story/news/education/2020/07/14/montgomery-high-schools-jefferson-davis-robert-e-lee-sidney-lanier-confederacy-name-changes-board/5433727002/?fbclid=IwAR1FrYps326R7rpWHyXSh_MsBEZPtuTb-vVkQVxMGHJFsRCHFWa88JwcqUM - @khatydid_whaaa on Instagram

THE FISH GOD #Dagon (or “Dagan” as spelled in some historical writings) was originally a Babylonian #fertility god who evolved into a major Northwest Semitic god, reportedly of fish and/or fishing (as a symbol of multiplying). He was worshiped by the early Amorites, founders of the city of Babylon. He was also a major member, or perhaps head, of the pantheon of the Philistines, descendants of the Babylonians, and he was an important god of the maritime Canaanites, the Phoenicians. Dagon first appears in extant records about 2500 BC in the Mari texts and in personal Amorite names in which the Mesopotamian gods Ilu (Ēl), Dagan, and Adad are especially common.  Dagon was referred to as lord of the gods and lord of the land in some of the earliest records.  Records of Dagon and whence he came and his role vary in later cultures.  In the Bible, Dagon is referred to as the god of the Philistines.  Another interpretation of Dagon from the Bible was “that Dagon had the form of a fish and, from his navel up, the form of a man. In all past records that we researched, Dagon is depicted as an important god of past civilizations with many ties to the symbolism of fishing or being of a fish.  Figures of Dagon found on Babylonian gems, on Assyrian and Babylonian cylinders, and on pieces of sculptures in the region combine in different ways the body of a man and of a fish.  Taking the depiction of Dagon from the historical records and art in more general terms, Dagon personifies the idea that the ocean with its wealth of fish was worshiped as the chief source of human nourishment and culture. #rootsandculture #astrotheology #spiritualawakening - @eldorado1 on Instagram

We’ve created 6 visuals (yes 6 😅) to educate everyone a little on the history of pride colours and pride flags. Did you know that the original 🏳️‍🌈 pride flag had 8 colours, but due to unavailability of pink fabric, and the need to divide pride colours into an even number for a pride parade, turquoise was dropped? There are also many other types of pride flags out there but we have stuck to these 6, so yea... #lgbtq #pride - @pinkdotsg on Instagram

This is the story of David Fagen, a black soldier during the Philippine-American War (1899 to 1902). He defected and joined the Philippine army due to being ill-treated by mainly white American soldiers, as well as witnessing their dishonourable treatment and view of Filipinos. We at Kape Philippine Coffee condemn racism and colonial mentality in all its forms and impacts. It is when we acknowledge its evils and examine our own sense of privilege that we inch closer to becoming a more principled and responsible society. Today is the intersection of Asian and Philippine Heritage Months, in which we value the spirit of diversity, respect, and inclusion. We also continue the struggles of our ancestors who gave up their lives in exchange for our freedom, and fight for what is right with honour, reason, and compassion. ᜁᜆᜓ ᜀᜅ͓ ᜃᜓᜏᜒᜈ͓ᜆᜓ ᜈᜒ David Fagen | ᜁᜐᜅ͓ ᜋᜁᜆᜒᜋ͓ ᜈ ᜐᜓᜈ͓ᜇᜎᜓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜇᜒᜄ͓ᜋᜀᜅ͓ ᜉᜒᜎᜒᜉᜒᜈᜐ͓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜀᜋᜒᜇᜒᜃ ᜈᜓᜂᜅ͓ 1899 ᜑᜅ͓ᜄᜅ͓ 1902. ᜃᜓᜋᜎᜐ͓ ᜐᜒᜌ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜐᜓᜋᜎᜒ ᜐ ᜋᜅ ᜆ͓ᜇᜒᜉᜅ͓ ᜉᜒᜎᜒᜉᜒᜈᜓ ᜇᜑᜒᜎ͓ ᜐ ᜋᜐᜋᜅ͓ ᜉᜄ͓ᜆ͓ᜇᜆᜓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜋᜅ ᜉᜓᜆᜒᜅ͓ ᜐᜓᜈ͓ᜇᜎᜓᜅ͓ ᜀᜋᜒᜇᜒᜃᜈᜓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜐ ᜃᜈᜒᜎᜅ͓ ᜋᜐᜋᜅ͓ ᜉᜄ͓ᜆᜒᜅᜒᜈ͓ ᜐ ᜋᜅ ᜉᜒᜎᜒᜉᜒᜈᜓ|| ᜃᜋᜒ ᜐ ᜃᜉᜒ ᜀᜌ͓ ᜃᜓᜋᜓᜃᜓᜈ͓ᜇᜒ ᜐ ᜇᜐᜒᜐ͓ᜋᜓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜃᜓᜎᜓᜈ͓ᜌᜎ͓ ᜈ ᜉᜄ͓ᜁᜁᜐᜒᜉ͓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜐ ᜎᜑᜆ͓ ᜈᜒᜆᜓᜅ͓ ᜂᜇᜒ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜁᜉᜒᜃ͓ᜆᜓ|| ᜐ ᜉᜄᜃᜒᜎᜎ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜃᜐᜋᜀᜅ͓ ᜁᜆᜓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜐ ᜉᜄ͓ᜃᜒᜎᜎ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜀᜆᜒᜅ͓ ᜃᜆᜌᜓᜀᜈ͓ ᜎᜅ͓ ᜈᜆᜒᜈ͓ ᜋᜃᜃᜋ͓ᜆᜈ͓ ᜀᜅ͓ ᜆᜓᜈᜌ͓ ᜈ ᜎᜓᜉᜓᜈᜅ͓ ᜇᜒᜐ͓ᜉᜓᜈ͓ᜐᜊ͓ᜎᜒ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜀᜌᜓᜈ͓ ᜐ ᜃᜇᜅᜎᜈ͓|| ᜅᜌᜓᜈ͓ ᜀᜌ͓ ᜀᜅ͓ ᜆᜓᜎᜌᜈ͓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜊᜓᜏᜈ͓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜎᜑᜒ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜀᜐ͓ᜌ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜉᜒᜎᜒᜉᜒᜈᜐ͓ ᜈ ᜀᜆᜒᜅ͓ ᜃᜒᜈᜃᜑᜎᜄᜑᜈ͓ ᜀᜅ͓ ᜉᜄ͓ᜃᜃᜁᜊᜁᜊ| ᜇᜒᜐ͓ᜉᜒᜆᜓ| ᜀᜆ͓ ᜉᜄ͓ᜐᜐᜋ|| ᜉᜒᜈᜉᜆᜓᜎᜓᜌ͓ ᜈᜆᜒᜈ͓ ᜀᜅ͓ ᜎᜊᜈ͓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜀᜆᜒᜅ͓ ᜋᜅ ᜈᜒᜈᜓᜈᜓ ᜈ ᜈᜄ͓ᜊᜓᜏᜒᜐ͓ ᜈᜅ͓ ᜊᜓᜑᜌ͓ ᜉᜇ ᜐ ᜀᜆᜒᜅ͓ ᜃᜎᜌᜀᜈ͓ ᜀᜆ͓ ᜐ ᜉᜄ͓ᜎᜊᜈ͓ ᜃᜇᜅᜎᜈ͓ | ᜃᜆ͓ᜏᜒᜇᜈ͓ | ᜀᜆ͓ ᜉᜃᜒᜃᜒᜉᜄ͓ᜃᜉ͓ᜏ|| - @kape.coffee on Instagram

412-414 (172-174 old numbers) Washington Street. Originally built in 1853 as an Armory, which helped supply troops with guns and ammo throughout the Civil War. ¤ In 1881 and again in 1893 the building was remodeled slightly becoming the new home of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows. Celebrations and gatherings of all kinds were held at the Odd Fellows Hall, decorations provided of course by United Decorating ¤ In the 1920’s the Odd Fellows moved to 227 Washington and the Palace Garden began to occupy the space. Much like its predecessor, the Palace Garden was a hall that often hosted cabarets and a variety of other performances. ¤ The building was once again renovated to its current appearance. Information about the “Lining Store” appears to be nonexistent. In the 1940s it was the home of W.T. Grant Department Store. A wooden escalator was installed to transport customers between the two massive store floors.  ¤ In the 1970’s 412-414 became Queens Department Store, a local favorite for everything and anything boasting, “Queens Will Treat You Right.” Eventually Blockbuster moved into the space, but sadly closed in 2011. Today it is the home to clothing retailer Anthropolgie.  ¤ Trying to follow the lineage of this building has proven difficult, if I left anything out or you would like to add something, I would love to hear you share in the comments below!  #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #WashingtonStreet - @hobokenhistory on Instagram

George Polgreen Bridgetower: An African Prodigy in England 1789-1860. ⁣⁣ An outstanding violinist. Best known for his association with Ludwig van Beethoven, who wrote the piece Kreutzer Sonata just for him to play in 1803 (the full title was Sonata composed for the Mulatto). The composer praised him as “a very capable virtuoso who has a complete command of his instrument”. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He was born in Poland to a West Indian father and German mother. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ He moved to London at an early age and was performing in theaters by the age of ten. The scope of Bridgetowers career in Europe becomes apparent when one sees what was written about him in late eighteenth-century English, French, and Austro-German newspapers, memoirs, and journals. By the age of twelve he was recognised by Londons musical intelligentsia as a respected member of its artistic community. By 1799, he performed in approximately fifty publicised concerts as a soloist or a principal musician. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ How did Bridgetower overcome some of the obvious racial barriers of his day? ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (1) He had an entreprenurial father who brought his son to the attention of the English aristocracy;⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (2) He was so skilful that he gained the unwavering financial support of that aristocracy;⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (3) For his day he had an above average education - a factor that often facilitated the rise up the social ladder in Georgian England; and⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ (4) He won the support and friendship of George, Prince of Wales, later George IV of England. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Bridgetower eventually fell out with Beethoven over the snub of a mutual female friend, he obviously deserves much more attention for the contributions he made to Classical music performance.⁣⁣ - @blackmusichistory on Instagram
