Hey incoming FY1s, I know a lot of you sacrificed the end of med school and graduated early to become interim foundation doctors but tomorrow is your official start day as the doctor you have hoped to be for many yrs. It’s 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 day guys! How can we not celebrate that? 🎉 You made it here 💪🏽 Welcome to the team 💙 Every 1st Wed of Aug, thousands of newly qualified doctors before you have entered the wards and depts bringing fresh energy but feeling daunted. I did too and so will so many of you, especially during these pandemic times. Let’s not underestimate that. Here’s the advice I wish I had: 🩺 You are smart, brilliant, have given up years, countless events and know more than you think you do today. Experience comes with time but that doesn’t make you a less important member of the team 🩺 No question is too silly, you are a lifelong learner just like I still am years later. Seek out seniors who are keen to teach and once you find us, 𝘥𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦-𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 and absorb. Find a mentor, aside from your educational supervisor 🩺 You won’t please everyone and you don’t need to. There will always be some bad apple who will tear you down on a ward round or clinic. It’s not 𝘺𝘰𝘶, it’s 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. Speak up to those of us advocating for change against this in training, this culture needs to go. The only environment you should be in is where your learning & development is nurtured 🩺 Work together to take your breaks. Don’t martyr by yourself, your life and health is worth more than any recognition you will ever get for this. The days were long, but the years were short. 🏥🩺📟 . . . . I cant believe I finished anesthesia residency one month ago! 🤗 And Im going to start pain fellowship tomorrow! 🤭 . . . . Anesthesia actually wasnt my first choice of speciality during most of #medical school. At the beginning of my fourth year of medical school, I listened to those before me who showed me how amazing the field of #anesthesia is..and persuaded me not to do surgery. (Heh, sorry my #surgery friends! 😆Thank you for doing what you do! 🙇🏻♀️❤️❤️) Anesthesia is more than just putting people to sleep. 😴 It provides you with a special skill set important during critical situations, especially during this #pandemic. 🦠 Its a total of four years of #residency training after medical school. 🏥 The first year is #intern year so you actually dont do much anesthesia until youre in your second year of residency aka CA-1 year (Clinical Anesthesia year 1). 😷 #Fellowship is optional and most anesthesia fellowships are one year in duration. 👩🏻⚕️ - @endlessrounding on Instagram

“I am a nurse practitioner with the critical care service line and the nurse practitioner service line. I’m a native Houstonian. I have five siblings and Im a twin sister. I’ve been working at Houston Methodist for 11 years. I was a medical ICU nurse for about 10 years and I’ve been a nurse practitioner for about 1 year now. The acuity of the patients right now is extremely high, they’re very sick, very critical patients. And in the IMU (Intermediate Care Unit) setting where I work, the patients are borderline ICU patients. The advice I would give to the community is to protect your loved ones. Act as if you have the virus. Isolate yourself, wash your hands, and for the vitality of your loved ones, your mothers, your fathers, brothers, sisters, and kids - go ahead and take the precautions now. If they come into the hospital, you will not be able to see them, you will only be able to see them through Facetime. So take the time now to distance yourself, and not be around anybody. A few tools that I’ve found super helpful this year have been my iPad mini and Apple Pencil. At the beginning of the year, we traded in our old iPads for these new minis. During the day, I’m able to look up information using resources like UpToDate and Epocrates. I can also write notes using the Notability app which helps keep everything organized. My friends @vranpariya and @joshrosh recommended getting an @apple Pencil earlier this year and it’s been so useful in the clinic. As someone who works in both a private practice and large open dental clinic where there are many people around, precaution is so vital. I see people starting to take it easy since the cases have been low. Please remember that the weather is changing and its much cooler now and flu season is beginning. Please also remember to wear your masks and wash your hands as much as you can. The mask you wear protects others around you. As annoying and time consuming as it is, I still wash all my fruits and veggies and wipe down my groceries and packages. Shower after work or going out. Overkill? Maybe, but it makes me feel safe so Ill continue to do it. Additionally my family and I are getting the flu vaccine in the next few weeks. Dont forget to get your flu shot this year as its another way to protect you, your family and others around you. Our Amrita Hospital performed a surgery on a rare case saving a mother and her newborn, as the first in India. We are extremely happy to share the birth of female baby born to a mother with juvenile pompe disease on #enzyme #replacement #therapy since 6 years at our #Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, #Kochi campus. This is the first case of a woman with pompe disease giving birth to a baby from india. #Pompe #disease is a rare, multisystemic, #hereditary disease, which is caused by pathogenic abnormalities / mutations in the ‘GAA gene’. Patients with this condition have muscle weakness to spectrum of severe complications. As this was a very high risk pregnancy with the patient having severe proximal muscle weakness she was planned for elective Lower Segment Caesarian Surgery under regional aesthesia. The surgical team consisted of Dr. Radhamoni, Dr. Vinitha, Dr. Girija, Dr. Jean and Dr. Neethu as anaesthetist. Prenatal work up was done to check whether her husband was a carrier and as he was not a carrier for pompe disease invasive test was not offered as the baby will not be affected as the condition is an autosomal recessive disorder. Mother was continued on #enzyme #replacement #therapy throughout pregnancy and baby can be breast fed too. The genetic team includes Dr Sheela Namboothiri, HOD, Department of Pediatric Genetics, along with Dr Dhanya and Dr Shwetha. If I had one word of advice to new grads on how to improve patient compliance - it is to EDUCATE! 📖 Even speaking in laymans term, patients often are overwhelmed by the information given to them and the eye is quite a complicated part of the body. ✨ Here are my top three things to help you get the message across: 1) Eye Models - everyone loves 3D models, and it helps a patient understand where exactly the problem is located! (Is a cataract a film over the eye or a clouding in the lens inside?) 2) Diagnostic Imaging- a picture is worth a thousand words. Describe a retinal tear in someones eye isnt the same as showing them the tear! Likewise, imaging can be expanded to anterior problems. 3) Brochures- you might think thats old school and will just go to waste, but people do glance at them, especially your elderly patients! When the results for my COVID test came two days later, doctors were doubtful about my reaction. I told them not to worry since Im a doctor myself. I knew that I could handle whatever the situation might be. Thats when they revealed that I was COVID-19 positive. As soon as the news spread, many of our neighbours panicked. The city administration council put up posters outside our door. People clicked photos and shot videos of my house. They shared it with my name, address, and personal details on different WhatsApp groups. Since people love to gossip on WhatsApp, ugly stories about me started circulating in social media. Even the news media put out the wrong kinds of stories. Despite going straight to the hospital from the airport, I had to be the victim of social media hatred. I didnt even go home to collect my personal belongings to make sure that I didnt transmit the virus to anyone. Thankfully, I started recovering and, after a few days, tested negative. But the hounding didnt stop after I was back home. I knew that going back home will be an unpleasant experience. Therefore, to avoid attention from neighbours and media, I insisted on going home late at night. Not just me but my entire family had to experience the harassment. My younger brother didnt step out of the house for two months. Neither did I. I would only step out during the night to avoid people. When I step out, I can still sense the eerie stares and gossip. It is like a bad dream - Im all alone. People refuse to hear when I plead to them that I didnt do anything wrong. We all ran out outdoors after we heard the news. It was surreal. I called my parents, sisters and so many others. How do I look? Does it matter? . . I wish it didnt. Recently, in my dermatology clinic Ive had patients coming in with complications from using products trying to change their appearance. One lady wanted to lighten her skin and used a product which caused a severe rash and left her with patchy pigmentation. Another with problems following using a tattoo type treatment. . . My patients tell me they wish they were lighter/ darker/ less hair/ less redness etc etc. Its mostly women but men have these issues too. . . I help where I can, but the solution is wider? Why is society so hung up on appearance? Im guilty of it too and try and post pictures where I look half decent. When younger I also wanted to fix so many things about my looks and I usually wear make up when out to hide flaws. . . Real life ⬆️ I’ve been extra exhausted lately. Juggling full-time work on top of wife, mama & home duties has been catching up to me and there are days where I don’t think I can handle it all. I think it’s important to share everyday struggles, as social media tends to only highlight the perfections of someone’s life. I’m on my third shift in the last four days & am ready to catch up on some rest this weekend (let’s be real tho- more like catch up on laundry & chase my toddler around) 😅 butttt I got my Starbucks in hand & am lucky enough to work a career that I love more than anything. Counting my blessings with my extra sleepy eyes & using it as my motivation to finish out the week.
