If you have had actual trauma that results in PTSD or cPTSD, recovery looks like learning to find safety in yourself again and comfortably coexist with it. You can still have a rich and meaningful purpose driven life- and the trauma is integrated into the story of your life and given its appropriate place- rather than being something that you are immersed in all the time.⁣ ⁣ I think where things get confusing is wellness influencers suggesting everyone is traumatised, so if youre calling mild anxiety trauma, yes of course you can recover from that.⁣ ⁣ PTSD, as most survivors know, inextricably changes your makeup. And healing doesnt look like the PTSD never existed. When youre immersed in it youre constantly on edge, anxious, dysregulated, and when youve done some work on it and have found safety in yourself- perhaps for the first time- when things trigger your PTSD you can (mostly) cope with it pretty well. You are (mostly) quite regulated. Teachers holding teachers accountable! Here is a teacher curated list of questions that we need to reflect on, but also need to ask those co-workers whose practices stay rooted in white supremacy. A few days ago, I expressed on stories how I was in an online training (with teachers who I do not know personally) that brought me back to the reality that not all teachers are doing the work. Since mid-March, most of us have not had much contact with co-workers from our site. The Instagram teacher community can be so supportive and so cooperative in learning and un-learning, but we have to remember that soon we will be interacting with colleagues who would rather not address racism and oppression in schools. All of the above questions were written by teachers through a question box on Instagram stories! After so many people reached out asking for a compiled list they can share, I made these slides. If you composed one of the questions, please comment or send a DM and I will be sure to tag you! The last slide is something we might all need to hear in order to take a collective deep breath. While we do have a responsibility to hold teachers accountable and to ask questions that can guide thinking, and hopefully alter practices, we do not have to plan for other teachers’ classes. The responses were a mixture of relief that the leadership had no hesitation addressing the sin of racism head on, and sorrow as continued silence confirmed for others that it was time for them to leave. There have been numerous incidents pointing to the glaring problem of racial injustice & the need to dismantle white supremacy, since and in between. This leaves me wondering, if you attend a predominantly white church setting specifically, what are they currently saying? Has racial justice, equity and reconciliation always been a part of the fabric of your community? Is your leadership committed to leaning in and learning? How are they showing it and what are they doing? Are they always out front or inviting Black and POC voices to take the lead? Is there silence? Are they wringing their hands and clenching their teeth over saying Black Lives Matter? Was there a one time hit-and-run sermon and then back to business as usual? Ive been back at the gym lately after a long time off and have noticed its one of the few places that I still, despite myself, display a kind of performative masculinity in order to protect myself. I instinctively butch it up even though theres no urgent reason for me to. Its been a source of enormous personal frustration lately that Im still unlearning this, still unravelling the expectations of my gender that I clung to for many years. But I want to express, both for myself and others, that unlearning the behaviours youve built up as a cocoon to protect yourself takes time. Behaviours that have developed over a long period of time take a long period of time to come away. Its important to practice self-compassion and patience towards yourself and anyone around you still learning to become themselves. A little bit of compassion can go a long way.
