Throwing it back to Akobis early days of heart-melting. Not only is the pygmy hippo much smaller than the common river hippo, but its much more rare. These pygmy taters are found only in the interior forests in parts of West Africa, mainly confined to Liberia, with small numbers in the neighboring countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. As a shy, nocturnal herbivore, the pygmy hippo eluded Western science until 1840. Ook met onze nieuwste populatie neushoorns in Malawi (de eerste internationale verhuizing) gaat het goed: ze zijn geacclimatiseerd en geven nu, één jaar later, kalveren! Manatees and dugongs are affectionately dubbed “sea cows” because of their grass-eating tendencies and slow nature (and who couldnt love them)? 💙 These marine mammals are often seen swimming gracefully with their powerful tails and flippers. Since the behavior and characteristics of manatees and dugongs are fairly similar, they are often confused for one another, but we’re here to help! There are a few key details that differentiate the two, but just one of those is where they live. Relative to their species name, manatees are found in specific parts of the world: Amazonian manatees stick to the Amazon River, the African manatee lives along the west coast of Africa and the American or West Indian manatee is found on the east coast from Florida to Brazil. Dugongs, on the other hand, live in the coastal waters of East Africa to Australia with most of the population residing in northern Australian waters. Passionate about much more than just viticulture, Dave is not only our vineyard manager, but also looks after Governance ( well-being and doing things properly ). He was the seed planter for our Mental Health Awareness campaign in July. In the Vineyard, Dave is extremely passionate about sustainability, working tirelessly to refine our practices over the last 4 years. He believes in a long term vision of a fully self-sustainable model ( pruning and crop management to one side ). To get a small glimpse into who Dave is when he goes home... him and his wife Heidi ( who also works with us ) bought a block of land in Coonawarra a few years ago, which was home to an olive grove, among other things. They are now producing their own spray free Coonawarra Extra Virgin Olive Oil, after taking time to learn from the best @grampiansoliveco , who Heidi couldn’t speak more highly of. If you have had one of our platters, their’s is the oil we use for them. Oh, and he is a Richmond supporter. Great news out of Tanzania. Elephant numbers have stabilized in a key landscape that was known for rampant poaching just a few years ago. This according to a massive wildlife survey by @TheWCS and Tanzania’s Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). . An estimated 20,145 elephants were recorded during the 20-day survey, which covered 29,855 square miles of the Katavi-Rukwa and Ruaha-Rungwa landscape and included parks, game reserves, and other protected and conservation areas. . Far fewer elephant carcasses were found compared to 2015 when the last survey took place, indicating that poaching is now being brought under control – though a few were still detected in some areas.
