Yesterday was “take your mom to work” day! Photo #1. Some people seemed more enthused about this adventure than others 😁😐 #2 overgrown kale abundance overflowing in the welcome garden #3 & #4 2ndborn is using a “figger” to grab me some figs. Unfortunately, I cannot show you what the figger looks like, bc the patents haven’t been approved yet, but it’s super high Tech (it’s a can and a stick). As you can see, “fig fetching” requires a great amount of concentration #5 Peppas!!!!!!! #6 this photo represents the ‘core’ of my being...or maybe just my face #7 (Unfried) green tomatoes #8 this little cucamelon was smaller than a cherry tomato, but it was bursting with flavour! #9 can anyone guess what this is? At the time, it was week 8 of the global pandemic and I remembered starting to feel grateful. Grateful for the time I finally had. Prior to all of this, I was a working mother of two, entrepreneur, living in NYC, doing the ultimate juggling act. The feelings of stress and exhaustion were starting to be a daily occurrence, even with Stephen, who had been nothing but supportive in every single way, regardless of his own intense work/travel schedule. School pickups, drop offs, juggling child care, work appointments, personal appointments, meetings, late night hours, deadlines, rushing to wake up, rushing to get there, rushing home, rushing to fall asleep. Looking back I wasn’t being honest with myself. I was burning out. Little did I know our world was going to shut down and we found ourselves in key biscayne for 3 months, at home, with our kids, surrounded by water, nature and each other. We were incredibly fortunate. We were healthy and safe. Stephen and I were both realizing how exhausted we were and vowed to not go back to the way we were doing things. We began thinking and creating a life we wanted to go back to. One where we would be passionate about work again, re-create the way I do mine, getting rid of worn out rituals and reevaluate the way I wanted to move forward as a woman, a mom and a business owner. We worked on our wishlist. We wanted to find nature again, space to breathe, ability to have people over, share food and wine around a communal table. We wanted more time outside, more time around a fire, more time at the beach, and more time with family and friends. Stephen took on a new role where he can spend so much more time with us, and we moved our little family to the coastline in Connecticut. It’s a new chapter. We’ve made decisions that felt impossible in our prior life. I’m still figuring it all out but all I know is I can finally breathe. #newbeginning #newchapter - @michellewaughny on Instagram

TRAILS & PARKS TUESDAY Today’s Trails & Parks Spotlight highlights the Bunny Bradley Trail, named after Draper resident Elizabeth “Bunny” Bradley. The trail has a flat and easy track for beginners. A distance of 2,682 feet, and a gentle slope of only a 106-ft climb, it also provides a connection to the Saddler tracks in the Corner Canyon riding area. Bunny Bradley passed away tragically in 2010, when she was struck by a vehicle while riding her bike with friends along Highland Drive in Draper. The young mother and fitness enthusiast had given birth to her youngest daughter four months earlier, but was already in training for a triathlon. She was 29 years old. Bunny’s family and friends raised $50K for this trail in her honor, and in the hopes the trail will inspire others to get fit. I won’t be working as a nurse because I don’t have the right papers here and the process is way too complicated and long, plus I want to broaden my horizons and look for something else. 💙💚 Moving to England was a big step for me, but not knowing what comes next is sometimes even scarier. I would love to find a job that I’m passionate about. How are you all going? 🦋 Hanging in there? I just happened to do two things before lockdown started that I’m SOOOO grateful for now, and they are: 1) cut all my hair off, and 2) re-start medication for my mental health. I’ve been lucky enough to access medication three times over the years and in each instance I genuinely believe this intervention saved my life. Somedays it’s enough just to survive, but other days I’m seeing a glimpse of who I used to be again and it’s... nice?? As Kendra has written in one of her daily lockdown reports, “I am feeling annoyed at some parts but at others I am feeling good.” We’ve been playing dress ups, walking everyday and baking (pictured is the successful experimental upside down caramelised fig and apple cake!). I deep cleaned my oven. It took 3 days and I had to vacuum it first 😳 my days and nights are filled to the brim with the work of homeschooling Kendra, cooking, cleaning, laundry, and caring for our baby. Last night I picked up my guitar for the first time since March and recorded a cover song dedication for a friend, and surprised myself with this “hopeful” feeling, that maybe I can carve out some more time for music in the evenings, even if it means getting 4 hours sleep that night. I try to keep my socials generally upbeat but I wanted to share this for anyone who is on a journey towards mental health (that’s all of us, right?), anyone who is recovering from addiction, anyone who is grieving a loss, any parents who have had to make some painful personal sacrifices to keep their families afloat during this crazy crazy time — to all the mothers doing the unpaid labour to keep things going — I SEE YOU. Once youve put boundaries in place in a relationship, how do you enforce them? If this is a new process for you its good to expect pushback, because what youre really saying is the way weve done our relationship in the past? Is no longer acceptable to me. Example: if you always took the highway home everyday and you decide that you are no longer taking the highway but youre going to take local roads--theres going to be the habit that wants to keep getting on the highway ramp. It takes practice to divert your conversation and the way you do things. So for enforcement with new boundaries? It helps to be mentally prepared for pushback. ALSO by wanting change and setting boundaries, it does not mean you are mean, selfish, dismissive, not a good listener too sensitive -- none of those things are true, THOUGH you may feel this if youve established a new boundary and someone has pushed back against it. Just yesterday you were a tiny wiggle worm that never wanted to be out of my arms. Now you’re a crawling (almost walking), climbing on everything, sliding off the couch, exploring wherever you want wiggle worm. Each day brings you new discovery and new found independence. I cling to the moments when you still need me, because I know that those moments will only grow to be fewer and farther between. It’s bittersweet to watch you grow, but nothing brings me more joy than watching you become the brave, beautiful, blissfully happy baby girl that you are. • • But before you grow too fast, please pause these moments and let me take them in before tomorrow comes. did you ever feel like some challenges are always repeating? whether it be a one-sided relationship, a negative emotion which always rise up, etc... too many time we fall into patterns in our life, and it acts like a labyrinth. those things keep coming back, again and again, sometimes we brush it off and just keep living without spilling the hot tea 🍵 about whats really going on! ⚠️ The yoga class I taught this week was focused on 𝗦𝘃𝗮𝗱𝗵𝘆𝗮𝘆𝗮 (self-study), one of the niyama (duties towards yourself) in the yoga tradition Svadhyaya is investigating yourself, being a scientist, understanding your behaviors and thoughts, shedding lights on patterns. With mental health issues on the rise, we all need a bit more of Svadhyaya. how often do you self-reflect? what tools do you use to study yourself? is it through a therapist? journaling? conversation with closed ones? take some time to assess yourself, whether it be once or twice a month. you will see how beneficial that practice could be! 💕 - @micapeng on Instagram

26!! ✨ While the 20s have been tumultuous and transformative, one thing remains the same: my gratitude for the life I get to live and the people who consistently lift me up. Reflecting on the first half of my 20s, there’s a couple of lessons that’s really stuck with me that I figured I’d share (or at least document for future me): 1. Treat obstacles as opportunities to change things up for the better. Life can be so much more than whatever’s on your 5/10 year plan! 2. Give off the type of energy you want from others and you’ll find yourself surrounded by good people. Light attracts light. 3. Stay humble, but don’t downplay your significant achievements just to make other people feel better. People worth keeping around will be happy for you and your successes. 4. Be better at listening than you are at talking. Ask good questions and learn from others. 5. Skincare is the best makeup. Drink water, wear sunscreen. Even with the challenges, this was a good week. Oh, the good times have just begun. Parenting is hard y’all, like really hard. Mom, if you’re reading this I want to thank you again for all your love. It’s so easy to sit back and make assumptions about how others parent or what you would do if you had a child. I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve been that person who has been a little snooty judge Judy about parenting styles and that being a parent to one or two children would be a breeze. Hahaha! — Let’s all take a minute and laugh at the grown woman in this photo who is just as unsettled as her newborn kiddo 😫🤣. “Parenting is the easiest thing to have an opinion on, but the hardest thing in the world to do.” ~Matt Walsh I went into parenthood with my mindset focused on how I was going raise my child. A little list of do’s and don’ts, what I would teach and preach, but by the grace of God my journey has been vastly different. My daughter has taught me to go with the flow, to watch my mouth and the words I speak, to calm my frustrations, to cry without hesitation when something is upsetting, but be quick to smile again because life is sweet. You tried it white supremacy, but you will not bring me down. The last two weeks have been an exorbitantly mentally and emotionally fraught time. The conversations that I’ve had with people in my life have been eye opening. I’ve experienced the pain of losing friends who I thought were understanding but have proven themselves to be inconsiderate and intolerant. I’ve experienced the joy of reconnecting people with from my past who I’ve grown apart from over the years. They have surprisingly listened and supported me in ways that life-long friends should. And yesterday, was the first time in my life that I’ve called the n-word to my face. Although it was via social media, it did not lessen the impact. But I’m posting this today because I refuse to let any negativity or fear silence me. I realized that I have been too quiet for far too long when it comes to speaking out against Black oppression. I will continue to have brutally honest conversations and shine a light on where people have been ignorant and fallen short in their support of the Black community. I may lose more friends but there are a lot of you who are new here and that gives me hope that what I’m saying is reaching people in a meaningful way. So keep listening. Keep talking. BUT WHY?!?! My last few workouts have been done late, sweaty and definitely not pretty. I get it all the time- why do you do it? You’re crazy? How do you get the motivation. Why don’t you just relax. I’m busy. And lockdown has made me busier, not less busy. Fewer staff for my business, less efficiency (post office queues anyone??), more commitments. I’m not anywhere near perfect. I’m working on trying to get my fitness done earlier. Prioritising me more. But for now even if it’s late, I will do my very best to get a workout in. Because I owe it to myself. My motivation: health matters. It matters just so much. Physical health. I see my mother with severe osteoporosis and how debilitating that is. How frail it makes her and the huge impact any small fall can have. I see men and women my age struggling to walk any distance. I see how much better fundamentally healthy people recover from all sorts of trauma. How quickly people can fall from health to frailty to losing their lives. So working out is a really high life priority for me. I may be genetically prone to osteoporosis (it can be hereditary) but I’m determined to do everything I can to keep my bone health, to keep mobile and flexible. I owe it to myself. And that’s before thinking about mental health. (That’s for another day 😀). And it is SO easy now to access fitness. I’m coming up to my 2 year anniversary with my online workouts. A-ma- zing workouts which you can do at home. All sorts of levels. All sorts of workouts. Such an accessible price point. And such a lovely community to share them with. We motivate and support each other, it’s so nice and a lot of fun! So instead of asking me how or why I do it, if you’re struggling with motivation to keep moving, why don’t you join us? The Scout Guide: You’re one of a few minority owned businesses in our area, which is a progressive community but predominantly white. As the nation confronts so much of racial inequity on a grand scale, do you have any specific hopes for our community right now? Maryam Owens: Arkansas is really good for supporting local businesses, and that’s wonderful. With all that’s been going on in our country regarding social justice and race lately, there is a lot of work we can do as a community. I’d love to see our community look closer at the way we engage with other communities, specifically minorities. Let’s not just support a business because they are a minority-owned business. Let’s look more closely at support. Is the way that you support a minority-owned business conducive to their growth? Are you conducting just a one-time performative transaction, or are you pushing boundaries, and looking at us as a whole? Am I just a color to you or a whole person? Beyond how you shop, how are you supporting minorities as a whole, reforming policies, reforming the ways we are being engaged with? There’s a lot going on that we have to worry about besides our business lately. We are lucky to live in such a supportive and progressive area, but there is opportunity for growth here. It was Friday March 13, I will never forget that day. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Since March 13, our family has moved into a new (much smaller) house in a new neighbourhood and guess what? We couldn’t be happier. Had it not been for lockdown and being quarantined with these two animals for 73 days straight, I would have never realized that our footprint in our home is actually quite small. We also realized that our kids don’t need a lot of toys - they simply want to be outside all day long if they could. Above all else, they just want to be with mom & dad. There were years when Mother’s Day brought tears to my eyes- the aching kind. The dashed hope and losses were many. And then...then came Miles. Like a bolt of lightning across the sky. A beacon, 10,000 watts of love. Miles is still that bringer of light...radiating kindness, curiosity, truth-telling, strength... And when Miles was old enough to understand the idea of a sibling, he looked up at me with those big redwood-tree-colored eyes of his and asked, “Mama, when are you going to have my Baby Sister?”. I didn’t know. Miles asked for a sister for 3 straight years. There was more loss, more uncertainty... and then, just when I thought about giving up... Poppy surprised us all. Her name means “Resurrection of Hope”, and she is just that. She is joyful, magnetic, resilient, full of life. Miles and Poppy are the greatest, most terrifyingly wonderful gifts of my life. Without knowing it, they teach me the finer points of slowing down, spontaneity, courage and tenacious love. They are wild and precious professors. This Mother’s Day, I have tears again in my eyes- but not the achy kind I mentioned before. It’s the water that falls from gratitude and awe over these two incredible people I get to do life with. Is it messy and difficult at times? Yes. Do I get tired? Yes. Do I get impatient and overwhelmed? Oh my, yes- with or without a pandemic added to the mix. But I’m beginning to recognize the invitation that motherhood offers me in those moments: the chance to take a long, soft look at myself so I can do the same with my children. When I can do this, a tender strength bubbles up out from that Deeper Place to love. Happy Mother’s Day- to our passed, present, and hopeful mamas. A LETTER FROM THE CEO There’s something special about lighting a candle. For me, its the calmness of watching the fire. It’s so beautiful and peaceful when its in a controlled environment like a freshly trimmed wicked candle. In the Bible, the presence of fire often symbolized holiness or the process of becoming pure. There is something also beautiful about allowing the Refiner’s fire to purify us, to allow our faith and preferences to be refined by His fire. This is where I am! Although in a season of public wins behind the scenes there have been a lot of things burning away. My preferences, my path to success, or rather me relinquishing the paths I believe will lead me to success. He’s challenging that right now. Before launching Spark my sister Jackie messaged me words Im still attempting to prove true and pure within my heart. She said sis, before you even sell a single candle, remember you are already successful! Whether you sell 20 candles or you sell out you’re successful because you’ve obeyed the Father! With each release, there comes more anxiety to outperform the last drop. Whispers to sell more and sell out faster. Insert my Father. This is why I love being a daughter first. Through love, He continues to pull me even closer to remind me of those words she spoke over me. True success is obedience in Him. His firm but loving corrections when I start to think otherwise is this beautiful fire, beautiful purification process. There is a specific charge I have from Him that Spark will go in another way than the norm, it will be lead and guided by Him. This is step 1. I’m opening the store right now. Everything has been restocked! No major “drop” this time. No race against the clock to outsell the last. I’ve found success before a single sale because of obedience. My prayer is that you’re encouraged to do the same. Present whatever has been your litmus test of success to Him and watch Him sure something up in you and then watch it turn as pure as gold. …. Exciting news!! . Since the first round table I chaired on race and women’s health @rcobsgyn, I’ve been working behind the scenes to ensure the issue remains atop the College agenda . Following International Women’s Day (IWD), we wanted to ensure we did more than just talk. The time for just talking is over. Now we are ready for actionable change . Today, I am extremely proud to announce the launch of the first Racial Equality Taskforce @rcobsgyn. The 3 Chairs of this taskforce will tackle 3 key areas: . 1. Racism and inequality, internally and in the work output of the College. This will be chaired by RCOG President, Dr Eddie Morris . 2. Racism and differential attainment in outcomes through the lifetime careers of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in the UK. This will be chaired by VP, Dr Ranee Thakar . 3. Racism and racial disparities in women’s health outcomes to include maternal mortality, chaired by myself 🙌🏾🙌🏾 Each stream will lead on projects that seek to redress the inequalities that exist. It will be honest, far reaching and transformative . It was vital for me this taskforce does the work internally to reflect the change we wish to see externally. To do this effectively we must simultaneously address representation within the RCOG and address the important issue of poor career progression for UK and Non-UK born Black, Asian and other ethnic minority doctors within our speciality . You see, for us to truly improve the outcomes for Black, Asian and other ethnic minority women, we have to ensure that colleagues from all backgrounds reach their full potential, and our work speaks for every single girl and woman we care for . At IWD I asked that we be brave. This continues that journey. We will learn. We will make mistakes, but above all we will make a positive difference. As a strong collaborative effort, we can move the dial for change. I thank Eddie Morris for continuing to champion equality in women’s health . I am loving this #locjourney. Kinda like... 4 months in. (there’s a back story) 😉 I had originally had a beautiful set of faux locs installed by @braidsandstylesbyugo back in early May. I had the faux locs removed last week and once removed we discovered my natural hair had began locking at the root. I had already decided I was going to start my loc journey once I removed my faux loc style but looks like my hair had already decided that for me. 🤣Since the grid was already in place and roots a healthy girth I thought...” why stress my hair buy trying to detangle?” That would only break and pull out my full healthy tresses. When someone has what you want— . 👉🏽Know if you want it- you can have it too! . 👉🏽Be happy for them- it took them a lot of hard work to get there If you Iive your life feeling threatened by every successful person you see- then you are destined for a very small life. . 👉🏽Iron sharpens iron Don’t distance yourself from people you’re inspired by- iron sharpens iron. Surround yourself with champions to be one. . 👉🏽Believe that what you want is meant for you too Feeling jealous comes from a place of insecurity. When you truly believe that you’re destined to accomplish all your goals, it makes the journey more enjoyable. . The sky is big enough for a million stars. Someone’s success does not preclude you from your own. Celebrate others’ success with them KNOWING that yours is soon coming as well, with hard work. When your mind tries to play tricks on you - remind it of the truth. I can remember one time when I was feeling insecure about my running & it was making me feel weird about others’ success, & I said aloud to myself- no, that jealousy and insecurity has no place in my mind. I want to be the friend that is so eager to cheer on another’s success. Telling myself- whatever you want- you’ll have, puts my mind at ease- & from that relaxed state- I can look at others’ accomplishments with joy for the hard work they’ve put in & excitement for my own pursuit of the goal. . ❤️They say happiness is an inside job. Aware. • My second pregnancy and miscarriage is the one that finally taught me to slow down and just let go of expectations. If it weren’t for your siblings I wouldn’t be the mom I am today, so their ultimate sacrifice was not in vain. They taught me how to love deeply and soak it all up, to truly live in each moment because you don’t know what the future holds. • Now, as I smell and kiss your soft skin, I cannot possibly take you for granted. Prior to starting Brunch and Slay, I’d worked in sales, and traveled 85% of the time. I’d been relocated for work a few times and had a hard time connecting with women.
