Mælifell. I have been chasing this shot for some time now. The first time when I tried to get to this mountain, the rivers were too deep after heavy rainfall. The second time, the roads were unexpectedly closed. The third time, there was so much fog in the area, you couldnt even see the top while standing right next to it. So much disappointment and high expectations but then, earlier this week, I finally got the perfect conditions. Finally, I was able to take the shots I had been dreaming about for months. The Highlands From Above Iceland • 2018 • A couple years ago I was able to hire a small plane to take me for a flight around the southern interior of Iceland. It was such a thrilling (I’m afraid of heights) and amazing experience getting to view the landscape with my own two eyes from that perspective. This was one of my favorite images from that day as it’s more of a landscape photo and not the tight river abstracts that I was after which are beautiful in their own right. ———————————————————————— Unfortunately due to the virus I’ve had to cancel my trips over there this year. I am still planning a return photography workshop for June 2021. This will be a camping trip with a small group of 5 people and the potential for unique excursions such as this flight with @flightseeing. Iceland is absolutely amazing in the summertime with wildflowers and waterfalls galore. And with the midnight sun, sunsets bleed into sunrise and golden hours can seem to last forever! While researching the different campsites around Iceland, one I kept reading about was Pakgil. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Its located a little inland, and accessible by gravel road (which in bad weather might be harder to get to without a 4x4). But in the dry weather I had, was pretty easy to drive to (though did pull over a few times to let faster 4x4s by). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Other than the fact the campsite is located in a little valley surrounded by mountains (with some hikes around it) and has a little cave you can eat in. The other thing I read was it was worth it just for the drive there. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I wasnt going to have enough time to do any hikes (but after getting there wish Id had a bit longer there to explore), so just took my time driving to/from there and stopping where it was safe to do so. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ One of my favourite places I stopped along the way was here next to a glacial river, with the blue water entering the muddy river. There were probably 2-3 other good spots to stop at with nice views. And with all the stops, it probably took around an hour to the campsite from the main road. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you do go, allow a little extra time for those stops on the drive there. Mercurial The iconic Old Man Of Storr in Skye is one of the best places for photography I have been. I simply loved the place. Its simply spectacular and there are lots of compositions to shoot from. I wanted this classic shot as years ago I was unable to even attempt to get up there never mind take a shot. Sunrise was spectacular but the conditions changed an hour after with some moody conditions but glorious light shining through illuminating the Storr. All rivers lead to the ocean.. magnificent views from Mr @chrisburkard who’s currently traversing the country by bike! 🚴🏔 “The Hofsjökull glacier is by far my favorite I have ever documented. It’s gradual sloping ice-field gives way to many rivers & pools. Today, day 5 of our iceland bike traverse, we had the opportunity to ride past this glacier on a remote seldom traveled 4x4 route that forced us to cross over 25+ rivers- last week these were impassible. Luckily due to cold weather & an alpine start we were able to do so safely passing the geographic crux of our route- the section that was a big question mark. This was the section we most feared but also were most excited about. Our current route takes us through the heart of Iceland- as it should, passing through every major glacier until reaching the furthest point in the Westfjords. EN: Weather conditions in Iceland are often harsh. It was also confirmed during this photo shoot, when the wind was blowing with a force of more than 100km / h. Everything was flying around me 😀. It was hard to keep myself on my feet, but when I saw the light conditions created by the wind, I had to pull out my camera and stop at that place for a while. Elysian First one from an epic trip to the Isle Of Skye Some of the light I had on this trip was out of this world. The morning light just kept giving and giving. I had some great sunrises and then some great conditions for the couple of hours after. Skye will definitely be on a return list shortly. In parts it reminded much of Iceland with its moody and murky conditions. It seemed that little pockets of light seemed to find themselves around everywhere and there was plenty of opportunities everywhere. I had the pleasure of spending the morning at this location with another photographer who was also staying in the accommodation I was at. Hes never been to this location so was very happy at the results of the morning getting some nice images also. It’s sometimes hard to grasp the fact this otherworldly landscape is real and out there to discover. When I come across places like this, I’m always struck by the stark contrast between the darkness of the volcanic desert and the fluorescent, almost radioactive-like, green colors of the moss. After flying 4000 kilometers Northbound, our twin otter finally came to a stop along a short strip of flattened tundra between the towering mountains and massive glaciers of Tanquary Fiord. We loaded our packs with everything we would need to survive for two weeks on the land and started walking North through the ancient valleys among herds of muskoxen and howling wolves; it snowed, and it rained and the wind blew fiercely. For days we walked and we walked until we arrived at a towering wall of ice that would allow us no further North...the Ad Astra Glacier. At 81°4050.639 N, we chipped away enough ice for our scotch, had a toast and turned back to the South.
