That’s a 23 week belly right there! After so much repeated traumatic loss, infertility, and IVF I was not prepared for All. The. Feels. this pregnancy... -overwhelming gratitude -stress and worry -joy -excitement -disconnect -protective -guilt -love -etc etc etc I love that little girl in there so much, but I have had the hardest time connecting that this will be ok. I haven’t been able to buy any baby things. Y’all, I mean not one dang thing. Which is so completely opposite of my personality to prepare and plan, but I think I’m finally ready. Ready for sleepers, pacis, diaper bag, crib, & bows on bows! 🎀🎀🎀 . It’s been hard to talk about being pregnant because of equal fear, feeling so protective of her, and I know how many women are still aching for this. I would absolutely be crushed to know I caused someone to feel more defeated, or grief. I know those feelings all too well. Just know wherever you are I see you fighting for your family, & navigating all the feels. I pray I can inspire more hope and that miracles happen for you! 4 years ago...the video at the end. 😭💫 My sweet newborn boy River, that moment they put you on my chest. When I looked up and saw the people I love most, looking down at us with beaming smiles. Goldie gave you a stuffed kitty cat and said “he’s mine. My baby bruddy”. It was heaven on earth. I had that minor bleed with you at 9 weeks so in the back of my mind, the entire pregnancy....there was a chance I could lose you. And there you were, sweet chubby healthy rolls, black hair, a furry back and the biggest hands. I have never shared these photos or my birth story with River here yet but I wrote a blog post about the entire experience just days after and never set it live. I’m going to finish it and would love to share with you. Birth puts you in a beautiful magical realm where time stands still. I can’t believe I get to do this again soon. I don’t remember previously hearing about #nationaldaughtersday but apparently it’s celebrated this weekend. I wrote about not being able to see my mother for the Globe and Mail. This week has been lovely and intense with the book in the world and more and more I feel how powerfully I want my mother to be seen and known. I am not a perfect daughter, no one is, but I feel especially far from any possible ideal. Our relationship was, like all intimate relationships, complex and filled with contradictions. My mother did not want me to tell her story. I am compelled to tell her story. That has been complicated, but what is not complicated is my love for my mother; like my love for my son, it is overwhelming in its simplicity. I love my mother and telling stories is the best way I know how to love her. It is the best tool I’ve got to fight the pressures of erasure. I need to see my mother, and part of this act of witness, of recovery, is to invite you to see her too.
