Sometimes I forget just how hypervigilant we have to be as celiacs, especially when out to eat with friends and family at non-100% gluten free restaurants. We don’t have the luxury of completely relaxing and letting our guards down like they often do.⠀ ⠀ This is because not only do we have to plan for the experience ahead of time (calling ahead to ask questions, researching the restaurant, talking with our server), but we also have to look out for other potential hazards as well.⠀ ⠀ Hazards like a very young child sitting next to you and wanting to touch your face after handling bread. They don’t know any better, of course, but you have to keep a watchful eye on them to ensure they don’t accidentally gluten you. (This has happened to me before.)⠀ ⠀ Or when you’re celebrating something special and you go to cheers someone who’s drinking a (very full) beer. You are so cognizant of what’s going on that you instinctively know to make sure your glass is up higher than theirs so no beer can potentially splash into your beverage.⠀ ⠀ Or what about that basket of bread that comes to the table before the meal? It’s usually placed in the middle of the table and people will be reaching across for a piece. It’s silly, but just a few crumbs unknowingly landing in your glass of water is all it takes to get glutened.⠀ ⠀ It all seems silly, but this just goes to illustrate the level of awareness we have to maintain when living the celiac lifestyle. And it’s not just at restaurants. This stretches far beyond into many other aspects of our lives as well.⠀ ⠀ Do you feel you’re much more vigilant since your diagnosis? As we approach Memorial Day weekend, we can’t help but to stop and reflect on our Americans citizens who have lost their lives battling all sorts of unfortunate threats to our country—including this novel covid-19 virus. We honor and salute you! I have been hearing, reading and seeing a lot of opinions and some tension around the “need” of wearing a mask. As a doctor, I have been trained to wear a mask in order to protect myself and my patients from a virus and/or disease. Yesterday, I rode my bike around the city that still sleeps and found this simple message in Battery Park City: “one small ask, please wear a mask.” Wear it because you care! You don’t know who has an immunocompromised, or elderly, loved one at home. If you feel confused about whether people should wear a mask, why, and what kind, you’re not alone. COVID-19 is a novel disease—a moving target—and we’re learning new things about it every day. Yes, the CDC now recommends we wear masks or cloth face coverings, but do we really need anyone to tell us that? The major transmission route of COVID-19 is via droplets that fly out of our mouths—that includes when we speak, sing, laugh—not just when we cough or sneeze. I know much of the confusion around masks stems from miscommunication, misinformation and misunderstandings, so I hope this helps. 😷 I have worn a mask to protect myself from getting infected and/or I have worn a mask to protect others from being infected by the me. 😷 Masks can also be worn to prevent transmission to others, and this is their most important use for society. We don’t know for sure who’s sick, so the only solution is for everyone to wear masks—for now. We all want to go back to not wearing masks! We hope this is temporary, so if we can work together, hopefully it will be. If we can lower the likelihood of one person infecting another, the impact is exponential—even a small reduction in those odds results in a huge decrease in disease and deaths. I can go into much more physiology there!⠀ ⠀ Anyone that works with me knows that I am a BIG fan of liver support. This is true for ALL toxicity, but even more true for MOLD. I try to support all 3 phases of liver detox with each client that has toxicity issues. WHY? Because the liver takes the brunt of the work of getting rid of the toxicity that we ingest. ⠀ Without a well functioning GI system or liver/gallbladder, you can pretty much be assured that all of your hard work to get the toxicity out through sweating, eating healthy, doing lymphatic movement, etc is not being maximized. ⠀ ⠀ If you are dealing with mold, heavy metals, environmental toxicity ++, then you should be focusing on liver support and subsequently GI support. If you have a poorly functioning GI system, then you likely have a poorly functioning liver, gallbladder and maybe pancreas as well. When one goes down, like dominoes, the rest follow. ⠀ ⠀ This chart shows each stage of liver detox and how you can best support it. ⠀ Phase 1: Oxidation through Cytochrome P450- converts toxins from their parent compounds to reactive oxygen species. makes the toxins less toxic but turns them into free radicals that need to be eliminated quickly to not damage cells!⠀ Phase 2: Conjugation: converts toxins from Phase 1 into water soluble forms though conjugation enzymes. Hey governors — like @nygovcuomo in New York, @gavinnewsom in California, @govlarryhogan in Maryland, and @govpritzker in Illinois — what action are you taking NOW to reduce the prison population in your state so that we can stop the spread of the novel coronavirus and save lives? Our lives have changed in enormous ways in recent weeks to decrease the spread of COVID-19 across the country, in large part through social distancing and increased hygiene practices. Neither of those necessary steps are possible, though, in the jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers across the US that hold more than 2 million people. These facilities often are overcrowded and they lack basic hygiene options and health care resources — circumstances that make COVID-19 outbreaks inevitable. Already, the jail on Rikers Island in New York appears to have the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases in the world. Making this problem even worse, the churn of staff and others in and out of these facilities daily means that a COVID-19 outbreak in jails and prisons will lead to illness among staff and spread of COVID-19 in the households and communities where those employees return at the end of every shift. Governors across the nation need to take decisive action NOW to reduce jail and prison populations through whatever powers they have at their disposal, including commuting sentences or granting reprieves to bring people home now. It was 1975 the first time that I was introduced to this procedure as a young nurse. The sweet, beautiful girl was only a couple of years younger than me and I was horrified! As I was prepping her for surgery she recited to me the reasons that it was being done. She said that it would stop the growth of unwanted hair on her face and body, her skin would become lighter and she would be more appealing to a future husband. What? This poor girl did not have any idea what was being done to her. Now, I am even more shocked and, yes, angry that a procedure like this is still happening to girls! How? Low income students barely can stay afloat, if they even consider attending here at all.
