El día que nos enteramos que mi papá había fallecido. Fue en La Guaira; era lunes. Nos fuimos a su apartamento y allí estaba sin ya estar. Del otro lado de la foto; en su cuarto. Allí estaba la prueba de que ya no estaba. Tomé esa foto porque es uno de los días más duros e importantes de mi vida. Inexplicablemente cogí el bolso de la cámara antes de bajar a su casa. Cuando lo vi reafirmé que lo único que realmente importa es entender el poder que tenemos por naturaleza; un poder al que –lamentablemente– una gran mayoría renuncia cuando decide buscar vivir la vida de otros; complacer las expectativas de gente que ni siquiera sabe que existen. Como todo lo que vive, un día muere y ya, todo sigue. Poco a poco fue llegando la gente querida. Mi mamá, tíos, primos, y amigos del alma, aunque alguno no esté en el encuadre, o simplemente no llegó. Allí estuvimos hasta que esa especie de pesadilla acabó. Y me digo pesadilla porque duele tanto que dan ganas de vomitar. Sin embargo agradecí algo maravilloso: mi papá se apagó y nada más. No hubo tragedia ni mucho más que un simple y definitivo adiós. Lo extraño. A veces escucho sus notas de voz y sonrío mientras me desgarro. A los meses me invitaron a Portugal (Flores, Açores) a dar un ‘TEDtalk’. Lo di sobre lo que sentí con la muerte de mi papá. “Quien vive no muere, así como tú, papá” fue el título que le di, y así lo pueden buscar en YouTube. Allí van a ver 17 minutos de desahogo y de diálogo con el Eldor (así le digo) que ya no está y con el que sigue estando. Aquí está mi papá. El artista. Eldor. El que mucha gente extraña y recuerda con peculiar entusiasmo. Esta foto la hice el 23.04.2018, el día que nos enteramos de su apagón. Mientras, todos los que leen esto, entiendan algo: usen su vida para hallar un propósito, aunque para mucha gente no tenga sentido. Cuestiónenlo todo. For Ryder, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida is the only home that he has ever known. Over the last 678 days, Ryder has won over the hearts of the doctors, nurses and staff who have cared for him over his long journey, but today he is finally going home. When Ryder’s mom, Amanda White, was 15 weeks pregnant, she was diagnosed with preeclampsia. By her 20-week appointment, her baby boy had begun to show a decline in growth, and he was measured as a 16 week old fetus. For the next few weeks, the news of Ryder’s health continued to decline. At 22 weeks, Amanda’s placenta had detached, and she was told the devastating news that every expectant parent fears, if she were to go into labor now, Ryder would not survive. When Ryder’s heart rate dropped dangerously low at 26 weeks, Amanda was rushed into an emergency c-section, and Ryder was born on Nov. 20, 2018 weighing only 1 pound, 9 ounces. From that moment on, Ryder, his family and the doctors, nurses and staff at Golisano began to fight for his life. Ryder has survived a life-threatening MRSA infection, coma, blood transfusions, colostomy, undergoing CPR for six minutes and several surgeries during his two years of life. Every obstacle that he has had to face, he and his family’s resilience and determination for life has continued to keep him strong. The staff at Golisano and Ryder’s family have excitedly prepared for Ryder’s discharge on several occasions, however, he has never been able to be released. If you didn’t know, I was a single mom when Chris and I bought Lions & Rabbits. I sold my Alger Heights home with about three months worth of funds to live off of. It. Sucked. Hard. I cried a lot. 2020 feels I have felt financially useless, like a terrible mom and partner- Like the walls of this “investment” would crumble before I could fix them or my garbage bill will set me over the edge. I felt like no “business for dummies” book would help me and I still make jokes about hating money because it’s math. So I worked longer and more intentionally (and learned math) We’ve been putting a lot of that weight onto those around us. Whether it’s babysitting or ordering food after a long day, the support has been the key of our success. Thank you. And now it’s four years later. We’re still here. And this tangible, experiential space, is still just space. But it’s housing millions of hidden treasures. The wild thing is, it will never be the physical building but what is in and around it, created by hundreds of people. Art, education, safety and experience. These have given many of us the opportunity blossom, together. Even in an event space during COVID. Imagine working in a field where you are expected to be proficient in your specialty, continue to train and educate yourself in said specialty, perform and assist with interventions, procedures and treatments within the specialty, provide explanations, information and education to those that utilize your specialty and make autonomous decisions based on your training that directly impact care only to be belittled and disrespected by colleagues that received further training within the field you both love because you didn’t choose the same path. Imagine all that and also being told that you are not allowed to discuss, advocate, or educate outside of that realm. That you are not permitted to be considered an expert in the subject matter that you also devoted your time, energy and life to because you’re not a medical doctor. What if your certified? Have your Masters? What about a DNP? How about if you’re a nurse with a PhD? What if you’re just a brilliant RN? Performed research? Completed a study? Can you still not be an expert on a subject because you’re not an MD? Only MDs can be experts in health subjects? What if you’re a lousy MD? Is the education you provide or explain automatically higher quality? more accurate? Where is this line of thinking coming from? Nobody argues that Dermatologists such a Dr. Lee aren’t experts in their field, but does that mean no one else can be? Is there a monopoly on knowledge and education? Nurses are pissed because this is nothing new. The belittlement and disrespect continues within every specialty despite the increasing education requirements, proficiencies and responsibilities thrust upon us. Dear One Kick’s Gym Families, The Coronavirus (COVID-19) has created a public health crisis that forces everyone to take unprecedented steps to prevent the spread of the illness among our families and community. Today, the Governor of Nevada has announced statewide school closures. At this time, we have been fortunate enough to have no confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 within our gym or staff. As a precaution we did a thorough bleaching and sanitizing last week of every surface and piece of equipment in our facility. However, in accordance with the Governors directives and in an effort to prevent the further spread of the virus, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close One Kick’s Gym beginning Monday, March 16, 2020, and will remain closed until at least April 6. We are paying close attention to the directives of the Governors Office as well as the CDC to determine when our facility will return to normal operation. We will be doing extreme cleaning and sanitizing while we are temporarily closed so that you may return to our facility with confidence. We will keep you informed of future developments. I had the privilege of participating in the @bipocfoodcouver pop-up last week, and the response was wonderfully uplifting. It can be such a struggle to find a foothold in food, to make it profitable, and to feel like youll find your way. The most beautiful thing about working in a commissary kitchen like @cohocommissary is the community and collaboration that arises. One of my favourite sayings is, a rising tide floats all ships. 🟡POSTAGE DURING COVID🟡 Bit of a weird post here guys, but to save sending hundreds of emails, I am hoping to reach as many of our customers as possible. As PERFECTLY said by a customer yesterday, “Covid has given Australia post an excuse to twiddle their thumbs”. We are fielding numerous emails daily about th where abouts of their packages. I CANNOT begin to tell you the stress and anguish Australia Post has caused our small business and tbh my mental health 😟 We are having packages take over 2 weeks to arrive just suburbs away, some packages not tracking AT ALL FOR WEEKS, and others being delivered a month after posted BUT saying delivered on time, in total contradiction to what actually happened- which looks like blatant fraud and I’m calling it out. (The second two images show an example of a long time & trusted customers word as to when their items arrived, compared to what the falsified tracking says.) We have wasted so much time, tears, and money RE-sending orders out of goodwill and its killing us! Punks, if you get a tracking number, firstly, please be patient, the packages are arriving- albeit insanely late. If it’s been more than 3 weeks, please email us with the title POSTAGE INVESTIGATION as this little business is going to take a stand and hold Aus Post accountable. With so many packages going out every day; I don’t have time to sit and investigate the timing of every single tracking number; so if you can spare the two seconds to shoot an email, I’d really appreciate it. This action is part of the international movement called “MEAT THE VICTIMS” At 6am on Sunday April 28, 2019, a group of 65 concerned citizens peacefully entered Excelsior hog farm, as well as another 140 individuals who are gathered outside of the property in support, acting in response to appalling video footage recently released by PETA. The aim of this action is to expose the reality of what is happening to the victims of the ‘meat’ industry and to challenge the current mindset within our society. The truth is being hidden from the public and we believe that people are making choices that go against their values. Most people are against animal cruelty & would not want to support this industry if they knew what was truly happening. The public has a right to know. These industries perpetuate the ‘humane myth’ with labels such as ‘local,’ ‘free range’, ‘grass fed’, ‘organic’, & ‘cage free’ - all terms which are used to deceive and mislead the public into believing that animals are ‘humanely raised & humanely killed’. We are here to show that this is not the case. We are forcing transparency in an industry that relies on secrecy. The needless violence inflicted upon these animals needs to stop. This facility is not unique in their horrendous treatment of animals. This is a standard representation of factory farming here in Canada. The long-term advantages for the mother include less chance of ovarian and breast cancer, less likelihood of suffering from endometriosis, less instances of diabetes and hypertension, and better weight control. For the babies, in the short term, they would have less problems in the GI tract, less instances of respiratory issues such as colds and pneumonia, fewer ear infections, better vision in the long-term, fewer cases of bacterial meningitis, and fewer admissions to the hospital overall. They are also less likely to be absent from work later in life.
