On #NationalDanceDay, dance like Bill ‘Bojangles’ Robinson and his wife Elaine! African American photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris captured this image of Bojangles and his new wife celebrating their new marriage. For over 40 years, Teenie documented the events and daily life of African Americans living in the Hill District for the Pittsburgh Courier, one of the most influential minority newspapers during the mid-20th century. . By the 1920s, Pittsburgh was a mecca for entertainers and musicians who toured the country. Many Jazz greats passed through Pittsburgh or called the city home; and, as a result, the intersection of Wylie Avenue and Fullerton Street in the Hill District became known as the Crossroads of the World. There were countless clubs and dance halls in the Hill District where people came to see Jazz giants such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Lena Horne and Billy Eckstine. Clubs like the Hurricane and the Crawford Grill were busy every night and Teenie was there to take in the sights and sounds, capturing the activities of a nightlife that rivaled that of Harlem. . Mary Harris, better known as Mother Jones was born in Cork and emigrated to the US. Following the death of her husband and children to Yellow Fever she became involved in trade unionism with the Industrial Workers of the World. She organised numerous strikes in the mining industry and successfully campaigned to eradicate child labour. She was described by a judge as the most dangerous woman in America. Gertrud Arndt 5. Having returned to the Bauhaus Dessau in 1929 when her husband, Alfred, was hired as head of the interior design workshop, Gertrud Arndt found herself living in one of the teacher’s houses on the edge of the campus with no formal role at the school, and feeling bored and frustrated. Eager to focus on photography, she converted the bathroom into a makeshift dark room. . In 1930, Arndt began the series of Mask Portraits that would preoccupy her for several years. Throughout her time at the Bauhaus she had photographed friends, including a fellow weaving student Otti Berger, but became increasingly frustrated by the difficulty of expressing her vision through her subjects. Convinced that the process would be more productive if she posed for self-portraits, Arndt transformed herself into different female characters through dramatic make-up, exaggerated facial gestures and the theatrical outfits she created from the tulles, laces, ribbons, hats, collars, antique clothes and other knickknacks that Otti Berger had collected over the years. . “You just need to open your eyes and already you are someone else, or you can open your mouth wide, or something like that, and a different person has already appeared,” she said. “And if you dress up in costume as well… It’s like looking into the mirror and pulling faces.” Having designed the desired subject, Arndt then faced the technical challenge of photographing herself: a process that involved a broom, a stone and activating the shutter by pulling a long piece of black twine. Over the next three years, Arndt produced over 43 of her painstakingly planned self-portraits, each of which depicted a singular interpretation of female identity. Time for some Pride History! William Dorsey Swann was a gay liberation activist. Born into slavery in 1858, they were the first person in the United States to lead a queer resistance group and the first known person to self-identify as a queen of drag. Imagine the queenery of this icon. They were a slave in Hancock, Maryland and were freed by Union soldiers after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. During the 1880s and 1890s, they organized a series of balls in Washington, D.C. Most of the attendees of these gatherings were assigned males, former slaves, gathering to dance in their satin and silk dresses. William was arrested in police raids numerous times, including in the first documented case of arrests for female impersonation in the United States, on April 12, 1888. In 1896, being FALSELY convicted and sentenced to 10 months in jail for keeping a disorderly house (running a brothel). After the sentencing, they requested a pardon from President Grover Cleveland. This request was denied, but William was the first American on record who pursued legal and political action to defend the LGBTQ communitys right to gather. They where known to have been close with Pierce Lafayette and Felix Hall, two people who had also both been slaves. They formed the first known same-sex relationship between enslaved Americans. When William stopped organizing and participating in drag events, their sibling continued to make costumes for the drag community. Two of their siblings had also been active participants in his drag balls. Imagine how intelligent and ambitious William had to be to come up with drag balls in the 1800s! Imagine how many terrible concepts William had to unlearn by themselve to be a confident queer black person who does drag in the 1800s! Imagine how courageous they had to be to fight for lgbt people as a former slave in America in the 1800s! William Dorsey Swann is the original queen, the original drag mother, the original activist. When Britain and France went to war with Germany on September 3, 1939, Canada had a decision to make: Stand with its allies or stay neutral. Canadians chose war. Tens of thousands enlisted in the army, navy, and air force, but Canada was deeply unprepared. Even as our government sent troops to defend England, shored up defences on Canada’s coasts, and engaged in naval convoy work, the fall of France in June 1940 to the mechanized and marauding German forces came as an utter shock. Stunned by France’s defeat, the Liberal government of William Lyon Mackenzie King ushered in limited conscription for home defence. With much of continental Europe occupied, a new resilience — tinged with panic — drove the creation of new military units and an intense acceleration of weapons production. Hoe door een avondje zuipen de invasie van Nederland werd uitgesteld🍻 ———— Adolf Hitler was van plan om al in januari 1940 Nederland, België en Frankrijk binnen te vallen. Het plan droeg de codenaam Fall Gelb. De Duitse leider stuurde majoor Hellmuth Reinberger (📷1) vanuit Berlijn richting het gebied rond de Rijn om zijn geheime plannen af te leveren. Vanwege de belangrijkheid van de geheimhouding mocht Reinberger absoluut niet per vliegtuig reizen van Hitler. ———— Bij een tussenstop in Duitsland kwam de Duitse majoor een goede vriend en collega Erich Höhmann (📷2) tegen. Ze begonnen met drinken en beleefden een prachtige avond. Höhmann was piloot en had voorgesteld om de volgende ochtend vroeg toch maar het vliegtuig te pakken, zodat Reinberger wat verloren tijd zou terugwinnen. Op 10 januari 1940 steeg er in de vroege ochtend een Duitse Messerschmidt Bf108 op vanaf Münster met Höhmann en Reinberger als enige inzittenden. ———— Het vliegtuig kwam in een mistbank terecht en dwaalde volledig af. Wegens een tekort aan brandstof moest het een noodlanding maken (📷3). De Duitse officieren overleefden de klap, maar waren op Belgisch grondgebied terecht gekomen, vlakbij Maasmechelen. Het eerste wat ze wilden doen toen ze het toestel uitklommen was het verbranden van de geheime documenten. Belgische soldaten hadden de crash echter zien gebeuren en waren snel ter plaatse. Nog voordat de Duitse geheimen vernietigd konden worden werden Reinberger en Höhmann gevangen genomen. ———— De Belgen stelden onder andere de Nederlandse regering op de hoogte van de documenten. Er werd echter getwijfeld of dit geen afleidingsmanoeuvre zou zijn. De troepen werden wel in staat van paraatheid gebracht. Adolf Hitler was witheet en Höhmann probeerde diezelfde dag nog zelfmoord te plegen uit angst en schaamte. Dick Winters , a native of Ephrata in Lancaster County, was the commander of Easy Company, 2 nd Battalion, 506 th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101 st Airborne Division, in World War II. . His story became famous when it was told in the book and miniseries called Band of Brothers. . Winters parachuted into Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. . According to history.com, In the early hours of June 6, 1944, he and other members of his company parachuted into Normandy, where later that day hundreds of thousands of Allied troops would land during the D-Day invasion. With their commander missing in action-he had been shot down by German anti-aircraft fire--Winters assumed control of Easy Company. Under his guidance, the troops destroyed a German artillery battery near Utah Beach in a battle known as the Brecourt Manor Assault. His actions earned him a Distinguished Service Cross and promotion to captain. . Led by Winters, Easy Company went on to take part in the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of the Dachau death camp and the occupation of Hitlers Alpine retreat, the Eagles Nest. . The book Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose followed Easy Companys journey from basic training. A miniseries based on the book was aired by HBO in 2001. . In 2006 Winters wrote his own book called Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memories of Major Dick Winters. . Winters died Jan. 2, 2011. His personal belongings are part of the collection at the Hershey-Derry Twp. Historical Society where they are displayed in a re-creation of his home office. . 84 years ago, a legend was born. I can not thank him enough for giving me so much happiness and hope thru listening to his music. I think that even though he liked celebrating his birthday with all his friends and family, it also always was a day of grief for him. He probably remembered his twin brother and wondered what his life would be like if Jesse was still by his side. My wishes to Elvis are that hes able to reflect on his career and life in a positive way (Dont worry, I know hes dead) and to be thankful for all his nowadays fans (us). I recently wondered about why Elvis music appears so differently to me than others artists music... I think it is because of the extreme emotions in his voice. When you listen to him, it feels like he truly meant all those words in all the songs. I dont feel that when I listen to other artists, even if they wrote the songs (lyrics) by themselves. What do you think?
