Time to take the plunge 💦! On Monday I start my Nutrition MSc at @lifeatkings 🤓. I’ve been wanting to further my nutrition knowledge for a few years, but kept making excuses such as ‘it’s not the right time’ and ‘I don’t have enough time’ to go back to uni. The fact is I was scared 🙃. I was scared of not getting accepted onto a course and feeling like I had failed. One of the benefits of lockdown was that I finally stopped 🛑 and assessed what I wanted from my career. Going at 💯mph doesn’t always mean that you are making progress, sometimes you just need to pause and assess the situation. The same principle can be applied to your running. Just because you are running all the miles, or smashing all the hill reps doesn’t mean you are getting any closer to your goal. Rest, take a second to decide what you want to achieve from all your hard training and go again. I realize I often take my progress for granted because of the support around me and the knowledge of who to see and what exercises to do. It is my job to get in shape, get strong, and stay strong. But that is not the case for most women. Most post partum moms don’t even know they have DR until months after they experience, pain, prolapse, incontinence, and become self conscious of their tummy. This was me. And I’m hoping it doesn’t have to be this way for all PP women. So I’d like to start with a little offering. If you are struggling with DR or post partum issues and feel like you could use some guidance I’m sponsoring 2 women for a Virtual PT and Pelvic Health appointment with the amazing and talented @pelvicpotential. Sara’s typical virtual appointment involves hearing about any issues you are having and your goals for treatment. She then will do a thorough evaluation: watch you move, see if there are any areas of weakness or tightness or joints that arent moving as they should, etc. She can then guide you through a self evaluation of your pelvic floor muscles externally and internally: check any scars and mobilize as necessary, check different muscles for pain/tightness/weakness and get your pelvic floor muscles working as effectively as possible. She will then go over an exercise program for you to follow at home that will be emailed to you as well. WE ALL GAINED WEIGHT- & WE DESERVE TO STOP FEELING BAD ABOUT IT. It’s crazy… When we first announced we were doing 30 minute workouts at @sweatmethod, I eye-rolled HARD. “But I gotta get this extra weight off.” “How is 30 minutes going to help that?” “I’ll have to do two workouts.” “I’m that’s not going to help me.” BUT what’s so ironic? 6 weeks later, I feel stronger NOW than I have in almost a year & that’s still with few extra “quarantine” pounds- LOL. I used to think if it wasn’t at least 50 minutes, it wasn’t worth it, but I’m truly blown away by the strength I’ve built ONLY doing FIIT classes and 30 minutes at a time. But here’s the big kicker- in a time of TONS of stress, our immune systems are already taking a hit. When you deal with any kind- specifically chronic- cortisol rises and has been proven to lead to weight gain. Or worse? A LOWERED IMMUNE SYSTEM. 😵 WE 👏🏼 ARE 👏🏼 STILL 👏🏼 IN 👏🏼 A 👏🏼PANDEMIC. To go out and sweat for over an hour over every day? Personal opinion? Not worth it. Your body is working overtime to recover & your immune system gets the short end of the stick. So the point? If we didn’t live in a culture that is so obsessed with burning calories, we wouldn’t feel focused on pushing our bodies past the point it should be going to right now. If we have learned anything during this time, it’s “getting back to the basics” isn’t a bad thing. That few extra pounds you gained from quarantine? WE ALL GOT IT. The workouts you didn’t do at home? NEITHER DID WE. So stop feeling like you need to “make up” for all you didn’t do & start acknowledging what you can do to keep yourself HEALTHY. & we all deserve to move, safely & effectively. - @hallehillman on Instagram

I know I shouldn’t let it get to me, but these particular words do hit home. A few years ago, after watching me climb, two first-time female climbers at my gym walked out after loudly declaring they never wanted their arms to look like mine. It was such a sad experience and it’s stuck with me ever since; to think that these girls had possibly given up on an amazing sport because appearance was such a concern. But it makes sense. There is so much pressure to look a certain way, while body shaming and bullying are unfortunately way too common. But you know what...forget that! We don’t exist to please anybody else. Our bodies aren’t objects to be judged by looks, they’re designed to function and do glorious things! My arms give me the ability to climb steep cliffs, hoist heavy sails, paraglide off mountain peaks, and give my friends the biggest hugs! I am grateful everyday to be healthy and strong! If someone doesn’t like that, it’s really their issue. And if anyone else out there has been judged or shamed or feels insecure, I hope you know the problem isn’t you! Keep being you, do the things that make you happy, and love what you’ve got! Wanting to get fit and healthy is amazing, but if you are going to seek the help of a coach to work through whatever challenge you might be struggling with on your own, there are a few important things to take into account, which are usually not paid enough attention to and which can trip you up if left to chance: ❓ Are you ok with being told to try something new? ❓ Have you prepared your mind for the frustrations of being a beginner? ❗Really, thats an important one. Beginning means sucking for a long time. This is worth thinking about. ❓ Do you trust the coach you have chosen? ❓ Does your coach invest in further education? ⁉️ Did you check that your coach is skilled in BOTH training and in teaching? ⁉️ Is your coach an effective communicator? What they know means little if they cannot get it out of their head and into yours. ⁉️ Do you get along? A coachs job is to push you and make you face less comfortable things. It is important that you gel. --- Training is movement, while coaching is a relationship, and you need to select your coach according to your personality and sense of humour just as much as for their skill and knowledge. Trainers are often told that anyone can be a client - I agree that it is possible, but believe that is not wise advice. If I have to worry about not swearing and if you think geek references are lame and frown at dozens of piercings then we wont get along, and even though I know my s***, Im probably not the right fit for you. Hate to break it to you, but getting bulky is HARD. ✨The ONLY WAY you will get bulky by lifting weights is if you are purposefully TRYING to get bulky by lifting weights.✨ Read that again. And then 4 more times. Bc I don’t think all of you get *it* yet. Let’s make an example out of the widely-known bodybuilder “bulking phase”. ⭐️To bulk, it’s recommended bodybuilders eat at LEAST 15% MORE calories per day. Meaning. If your normal intake is 2300 calories a day, you’d have to bump up to around 2645 cals/day and CONSISTENTLY hit that number. During a “bulk” bodybuilders are generally limited to a diet of whole grains and real food. ⭐️Things like soda, added sugar, alcohol, fatty foods are uncommon in their diets. ⭐️Supplements! Bodybuilders typically take SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENTS (it varies) like creatine, whey, betaine, etc. SO THAT THEY CAN GET BIGGER. ⭐️Not to mention, bodybuilders are the most religiously rigid human beings when it comes to this phase. Day in and day out they are eating and training in routine, following a specific-as-hell plan, and they very rarely stray. Wanna know why? ✨Because getting bulky is HARD AS HELL to do.✨ ❗️It’s not 3 days a week training progressive overload in the gym. ❗️It’s not 6 days a week at F45. ❗️It’s not hiring a strength-based personal trainer to help you lose weight. ❗️It’s not JUST doing Pilates because you think you’ll get too big if you do “real weight training”. Bc thats like saying you’re scared to drive for fear of becoming a NASCAR superstar🙂 It doesn’t work like that. Love you all. But stop thinking that lifting weights will make you bulky. Fight Night is quickly approaching for Jasmine and Aaron. These two athletes are unbelievable work horses. They eat, sleep and breath the fight game. They are both true professionals of the sport. From the time in the gym, to being role models to all those around them. They embody what it means to be a professional athlete. An added bonus is they share the same address, being able to keep each other motivated and on task is an undeniable advantage as they continue to move up the fight game ladder. Jasmine gets to fight for the first time at her professional weight class and just so happens to be for the CFFC Title. She is 4 and 0 Pro and has 2...technically 3 first round finishes and 1 absolute war that was in contention of a FOTY. She is one of the nicest most vicious people you will meet. Aaron is a main event on the SFTMMA card. They are a Brazilian promotion making their US debut in Miami. Aaron is on the verge of breaking into the UFC and is coming off a spectacular second round TKO finish. After having 3 cancelled bouts we cant wait to watch him hop in the cage once again. I was good at it, and had big goals to lift internationally For 2 years I trained hard and in early 2015 I started competing This sport bought a lot of ups and downs for me, both physically and mentally And over time I developed a negative attachment to lifting I discovered that I based my identity and self-worth on being a great lifter, the number on the bar, how well I lifted each session Results to me meant that My lifting always had to be perfect I HAD to complete my prescribed program for the day, even if I was tired I needed to always reach certain weights on the bar I needed my coach to be happy This month in Warrior School we are talking about results I am asking “what do results mean to you? A common question I get asked is “what type of training will help me get the results I want? A year ago, I left my comfortable office job to fill my time performing and doing things I love..on stage, behind the camera, on the bike and under the disco ball. I have enjoyed every single minute without an ounce of regret. Over this last year, I have come to discover not only who I am but how to love who I am. One thing I battle daily is thinking about all the things I am NOT..but is that productive? Absolutely not. Do I always make the right decisions? No. Do I always say the right thing? No. Am I unique? Yes. Am I a perfect Rebecca? Yes. There is no comparison when you are the only one like you! Yes, I did see this picture of myself and focus on all my “imperfections”. For some reason we are wired to see that. What I have been reminded of by my fellow colleagues is that I am beautiful, and perfect the way I am! Do I have a 6 pack? No. Am I strong? YEP. Do I have curves? HELL YES! My body gets me up in the morning, my body gets me through teaching 15+ classes a week, my smile brings joys to those around me, my (air) hugs comfort my friends. How do you push past the uncomfortable? This year has been full of challenges in all aspects of life. As I close on this 45 day challenge @f45_training_lamesa of eating clean, working out, and cutting out sugar (that was the biggest challenge for me!), Im reflecting on the past. I’m a little stronger, a little more toned, and a lot happier. I have not only found an amazing community, but a new lifestyle that serves me physically. But how do you mentally push past the uncomfortable?! What do you do for YOU so that you can show up for yourself and others? I like to push myself physically, which may not always be the best. This week has been different. I have been more aware, more gentle, and more vulnerable. Living day by day. Embracing the challenge, the change, and the discomfort. My bike broke down after covering 200+kms in Netherlands. We still had 150 or so kms to do to complete the trip but things don’t always happen as you plan to. For a person who’s not active and sporty, I rode my bike 🚲 with 10kgs on the back, in the face of strong winds and rain and even while menstruating. I cried, felt stupid, almost got hit, fell down and yelled at the road in these 200kms. Yet, this little adventure, albeit with the regret of incompletion, is the start of something new. I’m excited to explore more biking routes in Europe; it’s free, it’s healthy and it’s sustainable. 🎵Put me in coach, I’m ready to......combine. It’s a great day! I’ve been upgraded in both equipment and clothes (and I’m so happy and excited). Being on the farm, after leaving my corporate marketing career that I loved so much has been a huge learning curve for me because while growing up, farming wasn’t an aspiration or passion of mine. Back then, I had different goals and dreams. My path and those dreams and goals have changed, shifted, done a 180. I’m doing things now I didn’t think I’d want to do. Or try to do. Or learn to do. Or love to do. And even - do. When your path leads you down a road that scares you, even intimidates you or at times, you might question if it’s right for you: Believe in yourself. Aspire. Do. BAD. A mantra I’ve recently learned through @thetulepps and @bad_northamerica. Yes, I’m not mechanically inclined, or a seasoned-operator. Or a lot of things. Today is just one of those days. I don’t feel like doing anything. I’m experiencing every emotion under the sun and overall just feel ‘blah’. But we still have goals to obtain, so I at least got my workout in right after working out. ⁣ ⁣ Motivation is hard for me especially when I’m having a rough day. I’m working more on discipline over motivation and it’s hard! Sometimes it’s just as simple as remembering your goals to fuel the workout. ⁣ ⁣ For me, my goals are to overall be healthy. I want to feel stronger and be able to do things without saying ‘I can’t’. I want to be able to play with Dallas for as long as he wants without running out of energy. When I workout I overall feel better, so it’s a win win! I thought that so long as I just put the work in, I would never have to deal with any setbacks or obstacles. So long as I had a positive mindset... nothing could hurt me. Its funny how wrong I was about that. One of the hardest lessons Ive had to learn is that sometimes, even despite our hardest efforts, we may still not succeed. And sometimes, even on the days that are meant to be perfect, were still going to struggle, and face hardships. And this is a lesson Ive had to learn, and learn, time and time again. Im actually in the process of relearning this lesson right now, which is why Im writing this post. But what I have told myself in the past, and what I am telling myself today, is that: Even though you cannot change the events that happen, you can change how you react to them. Instead of allowing these challenges to bring you down, instead of giving up, You need to use these moments to move forwards, to grow and to find new power. Because it is when you are at your lowest, that you realize how strong you truly are. And no matter what happens, the one thing you need to make sure is that that you just keep going. I’ve done about 10 competitions, some big events and some in-house. Competitions are always lots of fun and are a good way to assess your strengths and weaknesses. They give me something to work towards and athletes to watch that inspire me to work harder. - - What changes occurred in your health during your time at FA? When I started at FA I was ten days postpartum from my second pregnancy so my body composition has changed a lot I would say! But more importantly are the mental health benefits I get from sweating it out at the gym everyday. It is my drug of choice. - - What do you love about FA? The people of course! Just got word that in less than three months, Team USA will finally be back on the field for tryouts in preparation for the 2021 World Cup 🙌🏼 So much of the work that members of this team put in happens in the background when no one is watching. I might be using baby weights but I’m back! 6 weeks away from the gym after explant surgery and it’s flown by! I thought about this and I’ve never taken more than two weeks off from the gym in the last 19-20 years! So while it was challenging, I also welcomed the rest and just being. I knew it was going to be tough since I haven’t lifted anything over 5-10lbs around the house and gosh did I want push the envelop but good thing @allencress_ifbbpro was there to reign me in. I got excited even though everything felt like a thousand pounds. It felt good to just get some blood flowing but I know I’m going to have to ease back into this as well. Seems to be the theme post surgery and with recovery. As I tell my clients, gotta give yourself grace when needed. RELENTLESS. I just finished the book un*uck yourself. This was one of the words he talked about a lot. This word has been stuck in my head all day. You see, the last 2 weeks have been very tough. And thats by 2020 standards. Last week was a deload week and I was suppose to start a new training cycle this week. But, I didnt. Mentally I just wasnt there. Usually working out is my stress reliever but not this time. I was starting to spiral. But I know Im the only one who can pull myself back up. So I gave myself a pep talk, put on my big girl panties and got back to work today. It felt good. Lots of barbell technique work. And ending the day with back squats is always good.
