Having a positive mindset doesn’t mean ignoring every emotion that isn’t “good” or “happy”. While my art and content aims to spread positivity, I also want to bring awareness to toxic positivity. With toxic positivity, negative emotions are seen as “bad” and should be avoided. Instead, positivity and happiness are pushed to be the only way we should experience life, while authentic human emotional experiences are pushed aside, denied, or invalidated. When we feel pressured to be “positive” all the time, we can start to judge ourselves for feeling pain, sadness, anxiety, anger, etc — all of which are part of being human. So don’t ignore your painful emotions; allow yourself to feel all of your feelings. I can’t believe it’s #freetherapyfridaywithky again but here we are. Another thing we are— GOOD ENOUGH. And we’ve got to let that be okay. I am 100% a perfectionist. How many times have you let criticism hold you back from chasing after your dreams instead of sprinting towards them with confidence? 7 years ago, I was thrilled when one of my favorite blogs wanted me to write up my home decor story so that they could feature it on their blog. GIDDY doesnt even begin to describe how I felt when the blog post that I had written went live. That is, until someone alerted me to a horrible website devoted to tearing down bloggers on the internet. That day, since my home was featured on a prominent blog, me, my home, & my writing style became a topic of discussion among a group of internet strangers. Ill never forget the first thing I read written about myself.... I know she is an illustrator and I shouldnt judge her, BUT GOSH I HATE HOW SHE WRITES.... it is awful.” The comments got worse. I started crying. Nathan made me promise to NEVER go back to that website again. To this day, I havent. Pinky promise. But, I carried it with me for years. Stacie: you cannot write. What makes you think that you have anything worth saying? I wanted to protect myself from any more of that criticism. So I sort of hid, & I tucked away my goal of writing & illustrating books. About 3 years ago I CHOSE to step back into Gingiber in a way that felt honest, authentic, & really allowed me to share my vision through my art. I began to write about what I was feeling when I would post my artwork online. I guess the only thing that was keeping me from becoming a better writer was not writing. My dream of writing a book could never come true if I didnt start actively going after it. It was time to stop letting fear control my decisions. If I had let that criticism about my writing skills from 7 years ago hold me back any further, then I never would have been able to make my book Give Yourself Margin. How many times have you had a big giant dream, but you stopped pursuing it because of a passing comment from a stranger or a friend or loved one hit you in a vulnerable spot? Push past the discomfort & start making those goals reality. Keep going. You will never please everyone, but your voice matters. Someone needs what you have to offer. - @gingiber on Instagram

Today, I’m proud to finally share my piece for “19th Amendment: 2020 Vision”, an art show @haightstreetart marking the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th amendment. The 19th amendment gave white women in the US the right to vote. The show asked 22 women and non-binary artists across the states to respond to the anniversary. I made this a month ago. The tiny figure is Therese Patricia Okoumou, an immigrant who climbed the Statue of Liberty in protest of ICE’s imprisonment of children. She stayed up there for hours, until the police arrested her. All the posters came out so beautifully- there’s work from a lot of artists *I* admire a lot, like @ishouldbepainting, @k8deciccio, @itsmonicatrinidad, @jessxsnow, @trapxbob, @nisha.k.sethi, and @heartovercrown.
