Such a fun experience at Canadian Masters Competition on Sunday. Both my openers were competition PRs, which gives me confidence and motivation to keep growing and improving. I learned a lot from this competition. It is a game of millimeters. My 3rd Snatch was right there, and my third CJ felt good, but received two reds. In the end finished with 97+107. Even though I had higher expectations I am still quite happy with this and feel there is so much room to improve. A big thank you to @me_beauchemin for keeping me calm, and focused, and coaching me through my nerves. And another big thank you to @londonweightlifting coaches and team for the continued support. Squatting your squats is cool, but you have to look at more than just torso angle. This has become the most popular thing I’ve seen in circles of people that don’t actually want to work hard. The torso pitches forward 1°, and we immediately move back to the bar because “I didn’t squat my squat!!! I hinged it!”. This is bullshit. There’s a lot of other factors to consider outside this ONE particular piece of the puzzle. Shin angle matters. Bar placement matters. Task matters. If you are a low bar squatter, you will pitch forward. Period. This is just because the bar pushes the ribcage forward in space, so the hips move backwards as a counterbalance to keep the bar over the center of mass. High bar, it’s much easier to keep these stacked, but you’ll probably lift less overall load. If your goal is max load, this is not a good choice. Low bar will recruit significantly more musculature of the posterior chain, let you leverage extension, and push heavier weight. Shin angle also matters. If you sit back and maintain a near vertical shin, you are hinging. If you’re pitched forward in a low bar, but the knees drive forward? Guess what? You’re still squatting. You’re still getting quads, and you won’t die. This is all multifactorial. It’s not a yes or no. You have to look at individual morphology and how the body operates as a whole. Arching vs FLAT Bench Press❗️ Why you should arch for overall efficient🔋 and injury prevention? Especially if youre primary goal is getting stronger[powerlifters]. I generally recommend arching even if its very minimal while benching since it reduces the range of motion [ distance bar has to travel ] and It also allows you to get significantly tighter and increases⬆️ stability. All the above are key🔑! Primarily if youre trying to move heavy weights in a more efficient/safer manner. Arching even a bit puts your shoulders in a safer position since the bottom portion of the lift is where your shoulders are the most vulnerable during bench. That being said, its imperative that when youre setting up your arch your main focus should be on thoracic extension✅ [such as in the picture above] and NOT❌ through your lumbar spine[ lower back ] which can cause some lower back issues. Flat benching is too unstable and the majority of people dont even retract their scapula making even MORE unstable increasing the chances of potential shoulder injury when trying to move heavier loads. Arching puts you in a safer/ more stable position and now youll be able to have better force transfer and more so if youre retracing➡️⬅️/ depressing⬇️⬇️ the scapula. Today was awesome! First official powerlifting meet is in the books, hit both gym and meet PR’s on every lift, 27 white lights and I’m hungry for more 😈 - Squat: 532 lbs/242 kg Bench: 353 lb/161 kg Deadlift: 567 lb/258 kg Total: 1452 lb/660 kg - This prep was tough, I’m not going to lie. The meet was originally scheduled in May, so I started prep in February. Then COVID hit and gyms closed, so I went a month without touching a barbell. Quarantine hit me like a damn freight train physically and mentally, but when everything opened back up, I packed my bags and went up to SBC and put my head down and got to work. Right when I felt like quitting, a smart man told me ‘it’s just something you do, you get in and put the work in whether you want to or not’ and that REALLY stuck. Bad days, good days, days you don’t eat anything because you work too much, days you don’t sleep because your mind keeps you up at night, doesn’t matter. This was such a weird experience because I usually HATE people watching me lift (which is why I never post my training). I hardly ask for spots, I don’t show training to anyone, I honestly think nobody watches me when I train either, but today I put my head down and zoned out the crowd, honestly the only time I heard anyone was after I locked out my last deadlift, then I heard EVERYONE 😂 - I had SO much freakin support today I almost got emotional, thank you to everyone who showed up today and watched me! Hell, even everyone I was competing with was supportive. - @jplifts_sbc runs a badass meet and brings some good people in, thanks for the hype on my last dead 😉 Big thanks to @lmferrari_ for handling me all day and picking good weights despite me saying ‘damn that felt heavy’ to every attempt 😅 Big S/O to the homie @rifflek_32 for recording my lifts. With the plate I can raise my toes up, this puts even lore stretch on my calves. . The second video was after I finished my leg press set of 8 •45lb plates for 6 reps. . 4 Tips for Better Box Squats . This isnt a post for or against box squats. But rather how to get more out of them if you choose to use them. The left side is correct , the right side is a bunch of bullshit . . 1. If you have a proper adjustable box, make sure the corner of the box is pointed forward. Its safer and allows you to be aware of where the box is so you dont trip and fall back and die. @jacob.w.ross showed me this . . 2. A Box Squat is not a squat to a box. Your free squat and box squat technique should not be 1:1. In a true box squat we are hinging to the box and limiting the forward knee travel you see with a free squat. Look at slide 2 to see the difference in knee angles from the side. Your stance width will also most likely be a little wider and your torso angle will be steeper because of the lack of movement at the knee. 3. Stop rocking on the box- this is not doing you any favors. If you want any carryover to your free squat stop rocking. 4. Dont relax on the box. Would you relax in the bottom of a pause squat? No, so dont relax on the box. Isometric full body tension on the box is key to make them more effective. . Box squats can be a valuable tool, but like any tool the application and execution is key. 📌 Tempo and Knee Rehab👉🏽💠😁 . . 📝The 4 exercises above have a variety of applications ranging from anterior knee pain or patellofemoral issues ACL or meniscus injuries. . 🐶Watch how I manipulate the speed of movement across these 4 exercises. Tempo is an under utilized variable that can have a large influence on the outcome and adaptation from an exercise. . 🐔Fast movements with a quick drop or stop can be used to create fast eccentric contractions and mimic deceleration while promoting tendon stiffness. . 🐮Long duration holds and isometric contractions can be beneficial for mediating pain and gaining range of motion specific strength. . 🐰Reps performed slowly create longer time under tension and higher metabolic stress, leading to favorable environments for hypertrophy. . 🐣Regardless of what tempo or set-rep scheme you use, you should be able to justify the purpose behind it and how that fits into the current training or rehab goal. Late recap with pics from @mvillere88 ! - - USPA North Shore Power Royale, didn’t go as planned but salvaged the day best I could! Squats went well 562 opener and 584 2nd, went 600 on my 3rd and lost my core and had some minor tightness show up in the hips and adductors on that. Told my boy @bigdiesel77 to take it. Moving into bench, not much to say here other than it was great for me. 3/3 with a 3rd attempt of 385lb and had some lbs left in the tank. Probably could’ve called for 391-396 but a 27lb meet pr isn’t too shabby for me on this trash lift! Deadlifts, I couldn’t have picked a better opener of 677. Moved solidly. Second of 700 moved much better but rookie mistake and not waiting long enough for down command cost me that. Called for 711 on my third to try and secure a small meet Pr. Went up smoothly and my right hand got caught on my quad and pulled the sucker open just as I locked out! Oh well. It will go down in January! Finished the day 1st in 90kg class with a 1648 total! Swole Cole made me earn this W for sure! Beat him by a small 2.5kg. He is a fantastic lifter himself! And I ended up taking home best lifter award to my surprise, as there were many great lifters like @philipmaranto , Swole Cole, and some new faces I don’t have on here! It is always a pleasure to compete with the USPA federation and @_countryboystrong_ ran a flawless meet once again! All 9 lifts yesterday for a 787.5kg total at 99.2kg 🔥 - 27 white lights, not a single red all day. One of those perfect meets where everything went to plan! I played the squats and bench conservatively as a big deadlift was my main goal. - Squats. 1st - 220kg ✅ 2nd - 235kg ✅ 3rd - 252.5kg (2.5kg raw knee PB) ✅ - Bench. 1st - 150kg ✅ 2nd - 160kg ✅ 3rd - 165kg (5kg PB) ✅ - Deadlifts. 1st - 325kg ✅ 2nd - 355kg (2.5kg above British record) ✅ 3rd - 370kg (17.5kg above British record, and a 55kg comp PB) ✅ - Very well run competition by @british_powerlifting_union at @bridgerdbarbell with lots of hygiene and safety precautions. Super grateful to have the opportunity to compete in these times so thanks again to all those that helped make it happen. - Ive changed a lot since I last competed. Less hype, no smelling salts, no shouting before lifting. Ive only been having caffeine once a week at most, so on the day the 2 energy drinks had me shaking. Interesting article here Lotta great points so enjoy. 5 Reasons Why Alcohol Will Destroy Your Muscle Gains One of the most common questions aspiring muscle-builders ask is “does drinking really affect the muscle growth process?” I’m sorry to say it, but yes, too much alcohol will almost definitely have a significant negative impact on your muscle-building results. Alcohol is far more harmful than most people think, and it’s very important that you understand how this drug (yes, alcohol is a drug) is affecting your progress. This is not an anti-drug speech, but if you’re serious about achieving a truly impressive physique, you should definitely be aware of the 5 main ways that alcohol is slowing down your gains… 1) It negatively affects protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is the process where amino acids are joined together to form complete proteins. Excessive alcohol consumption slows this process down by up to 20%, and since your muscles are made up of protein, you can see how this is a problem. 2) It lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen. Testosterone is the most important muscle-building hormone in your body. One of the limiting factors that determines how much muscle a person can gain is their level of free-flowing testosterone. 3) It causes dehydration. The kidneys must filter very large amounts of water in order to break down the alcohol, and this can result in severe dehydration within the body. Water plays an absolutely crucial role in the muscle-building process, and being even slightly dehydrated is a recipe for disaster. The muscles alone are comprised of 70% water. 4) It depletes the body of vitamins and minerals. Alcohol consumption causes vitamins A, C, the Bs, calcium, zinc and phosphorus to all be drained at rapid rates. Vitamins and minerals keep every little process in your body functioning properly, and many of these processes involve muscle growth and maintenance. 5) It increases fat storage. These are the stage 2 prototype’s for the FUSION Bench. Learned some things from the original proto that has been in use at the @anvilgym and now these go into final testing. The first went to @alexuslar who envisioned the idea of a comp bench that converts from flat to a comp level incline and the second goes to @swimhack. Both are serious bench guys, Alex 500+ and James closing in on 700. After a semi-short run with each to iron out any last details, we will have them available for the public. They are shown with jack arms that will be optional. Pricing and dates are not set yet. We want to make sure they are super legit. Pretty happy with how my training has been going over the last 4 weeks of being back in the gym. Ive been able to add 5 to 10 pounds to the bar each week for sets of 6 to 8 reps, soreness has been minimal, and technique is starting to feel smooth again. Ive lost the most strength on the squat, which was surprising considering how much high-intensity dumbbell front squatting and lunging I did during the lockdown, but my last squat session finally felt right, so I should be able to regain a lot of what I lost. How much whole-body strength I can regain will remain to be seen, however, as I weigh about 9 pounds less now than before the lockdown (fat not muscle loss). Shouldnt make a huge difference, but well see. Next week, Ill deload and get back into BBLS 2.0. Have any questions? Lemme know below! - @muscleforlifefitness on Instagram
