Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are found in a broad range of environments, from hot springs to marine and fresh waters, and soil crusts to polar icecaps. By understanding exactly how cyanobacteria harvest light and convert it to energy, scientists may be able to engineer highly efficient photosynthetic units to help increase crop yields. In a paper published recently in Nature Plants (doi.org/10.1038/s41477-020-0718-z) Vincenzo Mascoli (PhD student at Vrije Universiteit @vuamsterdam) and colleagues investigated cyanobacteria from shaded environments to learn more about the trade-offs between covering the largest portion of the solar spectrum for photosynthesis and achieving the highest yields of energy conversion. There are over 480 natural components found within the Cannabis Sativa plant. About 1/8 of these have been classified as “cannabinoids” - which are basically chemicals unique to this plant. The most well known and researched of these is, of course, the high factor, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, (Δ9-THC). The major differences between the cannabinoids are determined by the extent to which they are psychologically active. Three classes of cannabinoids, the CBG, CBC and CBD are not known to have such an effect. You know it is going to be a good day when your first peek through a microscope in a long time yields such a magnificent view! This year has been one of major life changes and watershed moments for me personally and professionally. So much has been happening, I haven’t had a moment to catch my breath even! A new home, new job, moving in with my loving life partner (and best friend), newly adopted pet (one more on the way), loss of my beloved dog who was much much more than a pet to me (he was everything), a new tattoo (dedicated to my dog Coco), incredible experiences ranging from conservation field work to debuting as a speaker on stage to meeting and befriending some incredible people ! Phew. I am sure I have managed to leave some things out owing to my poor memory! But coming back to the beach sand grains in the pictures above, what a sample I happened to pick up from my last trip to Goa! Microscopic remnants of #marine animals including the single-celled #foraminifera, micro-mollusks, sponge spicules, #coral and rock fragments and what not, all that in one tiny pinch if #sand, all in a single frame! I intend to resume #microscopy with a renewed vigour, again :) It is good to be back. - @purvavariyar on Instagram

Me contas que estas leyendo Las cosas que perdimos en el fuego, mientras todo el aire que te circunda esta enrarecido por los incendios de los humedales. Nuestra parte de noche me resulta altamente atractivo, mi sombra siente que algo de eso la nombra. En paralelo extiendo mi mirada por la ventana que me acerca a las sierras y también están difusas, latentes de fuego entre tanta sequía y ausencias. Sé que va a suceder. Nos preguntamos por lo real y lo distopico, y si lo que creímos distopico es ahora lo real y si tiene sentido esta división. Vos acotas que el calor de tu provincia habitando el patio de tu casa paterna, te llevó a volver a mirar con ojos de amor, esas crocs que a tu ex no le gustaban y vos dudabas en comprarte. Entonces pienso que nunca me compré un par porque cuando visito a mi ex, siempre se las uso y me hacen transpirar los pies. Y pienso en nuestros ex, que no dejaron de serlo del todo. En como supimos reconfigurar esto que sentimos y como fue mutando para convertirse en un sin nombre que nos contiene (a veces) y resignifica. Ensayo nuevamente hundirme en otras pieles, encapsularme en un recipiente hermético donde todo estalla y evoluciona; mientras otros yo que me habitan van planchando nuevas capas de sentido. 2/2. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi penetrate plant roots and create unique structures within the outermost root cells. These fungi mostly reproduce asexually, by cloning. Publishing in the ISME Journal, Ivan Mateus and colleauges show what happens at the molecular level when different fungi co-exist within the same plant. . Ivan says: “These results are very exciting as they show that multiple components of the molecular machinery controlling mating are activated when two genetically different [fungi] isolates meet inside the plant root”. . The activation signal for the mating-related genes was identified inside the host plant roots, suggesting that the host plant could play a role in the process. Good news for conservation! Spanish below Like many species of amphibians in Ecuador, the populations of the Longnose harlequin frog (Atelopus longirostris - images) and the Confused rocket frog (Ectopoglossus confusus) face very adverse situations, however, the destruction of their habitat is the main problem. These two species live in the Intag area, where the Lumiragua mining project is developed, who have taken advantage by developing their activities in a country where the regulatory entity plays a null or almost null role in control and even worse in the conceding of environmental licenses for these extractive practices. The good news is that one of the courts of the Cotacachi Canton has granted a protection action in favor of the rights of nature; in this way an important advance has been achieved in favor of conservation! Al igual que muchas especies de anfibios en el Ecuador, las poblaciones de la Rana arlequín hocicuda (Atelopus longirostris - en fotos) y la Rana cohete confusa (Ectopoglossus confusus) enfrentan situaciones muy adversas sin embargo, la destrucción del su hábitat es la principal problemática. Estas dos especies habitan en la zona de Intag, en donde se desarrolla el proyecto minero Lumiragua, quienes han tomado ventaja al desarrollar sus actividades en un país en donde el ente regulador juega un papel nulo o casi nulo en el control y peor aún en el otorgamiento de permisos ambientales para estas prácticas extractivas.
