If those muscles are excessively contracted, the sweat glands secrete their elaborate continuously and the palms will be continuously wet. This is a phenotype that can have social problems and it is therefore possible to treat locally with botulinum toxin, as in this case, those who will relax will be the muscles of the sweat glands that will no longer be so contracted and, as relaxed they will not cause this excess of sweat secretion. . . ↪Blepharospasm: our eyelids are governed by some muscles, if these muscles are contracted, they will always keep the eyelids closed. It is a gradual phenomenon: First there is ptosis: eyelid that gradually lowers, until it remains half-closed, preventing vision. It can be treated locally with botulinum toxin, generating an opposite effect: the eyelid will remain open but can no longer contract (duration of treatment: 30 days). In this case, no longer being able to voluntarily close the eye, eye drops will be used, because otherwise, the eye may dry out. #celltember2020 Lymphocytes Lymphocytes are another specialized cell of the immune response. Their discovery is credited to William Hewson, in 1773, who described different morphologies among the “colourless cells” in the blood. However, he was unable to separate them clearly from other immune cells. By the end of the 19th century, Paul Ehrlich noticed that lymphocytes were not coloured with dyes, such as eosinophils (see Celltember #19). For this reason, he proposed that these cells had a different origin compared to other immune cells, which resulted to be true. Today, we know lymphocytes include three main cell types: B-lymphocytes, T-lymphocytes and NK-cells. B-lymphocytes produce antibodies against almost everything, being the actors of the soluble immunity observed almost 150 years ago. Regarding T-lymphocytes, depending on their subtype, they can kill other cells, or orchestrate the action of other leukocytes (CD8 or CD4 subtypes, respectively). Notably, T and B lymphocyte’s identification occurred only in the 1960s, by the groups of Jacques Miller and Max Cooper. NK-cells were discovered a bit later, in the early 1970s, when it was reported that some other (nor B nor T) lymphocytes possessed and intrinsic capacity to kill cancer cells, being later called “natural killers (NK)”. Overall, the multiple leukocyte functions we have discussed over the last days provide an idea of the exquisite mechanisms that protect us against almost any threat and at the same time allow tolerance to non-harmful elements. Maintenance of this balance is key to living in complex environments rich in varieties of compounds and microorganisms, being a beautiful example of what we know as evolution. This is probably many dermatopathologist’s favorite lesion. ⠀ ⠀ When you first examine skin biopsies under the microscope, identifying a Porokeratosis is all about the column of retained nuclei within the stratum corneum…(buzzword to remember: cornoid lamella).⠀ ⠀ Except its not.⠀ ⠀ Its actually about the changes seen here at the bottom, within the epidermis. Its a clonal disorder of abnormal keratinization, where keratinocytes don’t mature properly. There’s some reaction to these keratinocytes, with vacuolated cells and inflammation. ⠀ ⠀ But the bigger picture is even bigger than that! Porokeratosis is one of those perfect clinical-pathologic cases, where the changes under the microscope produce a specific change on the skin. For porokeratosis, the lesion is a ring, with an atrophic center lined by a ridge of these abnormal keratinocytes. This picture is just a cross section of that ring.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I’m drawn to pathology that highlights the act of looking itself. Porokeratosis does just that. At Cobble Hill Cinemas the safety of our guests and employees is our top priority every day. While health and safety standards and procedures are followed on a daily basis at Cobble Hill Cinemas, we wanted to make you aware of the extra precautions we’re taking to ensure everyone stays healthy during this time of heightened concern about Coronavirus (COVID-19). Gloves are being worn by all staff. Every night our end-of-day cleaning team is disinfecting all hand-contact surfaces in guest-accessible areas (armrests, door handles, counters, railings, faucets). In addition to nightly deep cleaning, our theaters are increasing the frequency of cleaning and disinfecting all high-traffic areas throughout the day. Door handles and box office counters are being disinfected every 30 minutes during business hours. Been told your egg has Vacuoles? . The egg at the bottom has Vacs. They are incredibly easy to distinguish and look like circles or craters inside the cytoplasm. If you compare the egg to the other 3 you can see the vast difference . Its not known what causes them, but vacs are almost always from the advanced aged patients and therefore would probably link to egg quality. Occasionally i will see them in younger patients but their frequency is much lower . So what do we do?! Well if you have enough eggs its not something to be concerned about bc you can exclude them. But if you only have 3-4 eggs like this case, we would inject and keep them separate. I tend to try and avoid them at injection and half of the time they do fert and divide, but i know they produce lower quality embryos, if a blast at all . These morphologies in older patients are common so i thought it would be nice to show you just what it is we mean when we tell you “your eggs have vacs” . Enjoy the week . Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are found in a broad range of environments, from hot springs to marine and fresh waters, and soil crusts to polar icecaps. By understanding exactly how cyanobacteria harvest light and convert it to energy, scientists may be able to engineer highly efficient photosynthetic units to help increase crop yields. In a paper published recently in Nature Plants (doi.org/10.1038/s41477-020-0718-z) Vincenzo Mascoli (PhD student at Vrije Universiteit @vuamsterdam) and colleagues investigated cyanobacteria from shaded environments to learn more about the trade-offs between covering the largest portion of the solar spectrum for photosynthesis and achieving the highest yields of energy conversion. Vitamin D deficiency and calcium balance is underlying nearly every chronic disease process. There is a big body of evidence suggesting it induces fibrosis (calcification) of the lungs. [STUDY LINK AT END OF POST] And it unmasks a really important Lung-Kidney connection Makes sense? So why haven’t we made this link before? The key, is to look at the mouth first. For teeth, vitamin D deficiency increases the risk of tooth decay. Tooth enamel exists in constant calcium flux. Actually your whole body is, muscles, nerves, cells all depend on the movement and balance of calcium. Tooth decay is the body’s inability to replace the flux of calcium into tooth enamel. That’s why we have to really put a microscope to what is happening with our teeth. Because it leads us straight to the root cause! And vitamin D is the king of calcium. Ok so in this study:v“Chronic vitamin D deficiency induces lung fibrosis through activation of the renin-angiotensin system” What did they do? Induced Vit D deficiency in a group of mice: They used a vitamin D deficient diet to induce a vitamin D deficiency in the experimental group: What did they find? • Chronic vitamin D deficiency destroys lung structures, impairs lung development and induces fibrosis (calcification). • Fibrosis induces a shortness of breath due to a sudden buildup of fluid in the lungs Why did it happen? • They found that it imbalanced KIDNEY hormones (renin-angiotensin) • Kidney hormones balance calcium and phosphate excretion from the kidneys. • Vitamin D deficiency increases the release of kidney hormones (RAS) to stop the excretion of calcium. • The lungs are effected by kidney hormones because extracellular fluid is retained. • As vitamin D deficiency gets worse, calcium becomes more sparse, and mitochondrial calcium levels drop, a series of changes shift cell remodeling and induce fibrosis The result? Vos acotas que el calor de tu provincia habitando el patio de tu casa paterna, te llevó a volver a mirar con ojos de amor, esas crocs que a tu ex no le gustaban y vos dudabas en comprarte. Entonces pienso que nunca me compré un par porque cuando visito a mi ex, siempre se las uso y me hacen transpirar los pies. Y pienso en nuestros ex, que no dejaron de serlo del todo. En como supimos reconfigurar esto que sentimos y como fue mutando para convertirse en un sin nombre que nos contiene (a veces) y resignifica. Ensayo nuevamente hundirme en otras pieles, encapsularme en un recipiente hermético donde todo estalla y evoluciona; mientras otros yo que me habitan van planchando nuevas capas de sentido.
