A pellicle is a colony of microbes that float to the top of their medium (think: a kombucha Scoby). In this case, the microbes are a strain of lactobacillus that we keep around to sour some of our favorite brews. These critters consume malt & produce the tangy lactic acid that makes our kettle sours tart & complex. They are able to do so aerobically or anaerobically (w/ or w/out oxygen). Though it’s unclear exactly why they sometimes form a pellicle, it may be because it creates an advantageous barrier to keep out oxygen- advantageous for them because it keeps out competitive O2-loving microbes. Good for us, too because a common competitive aerobic microbe is acetobacter, which would sour our beer with acetic acid (vinegar) instead! - @fogtown_jon on Instagram

Those of you who follow me know that my specialty is photography of Myxomycetes (slime molds) and tiny fungi. Today we are going really tiny! Microscopic! These are actually a type of bacteria, called Myxobacteria, probably genus Stigmatella. They look like they are right out of a Dr. Seuss book, dont they?! These fruiting bodies are less than a quarter of a millimeter tall. Thats about the size of two human hairs! They bear some resemblance to slime molds, but the main resemblance is in the Greek origin of their name. Slime molds are Myxomycetes, coming from the Greek words for slime/mucus and fungi. But these are neither slime mold nor fungi. They are actually bacteria!!! They are Myxobacteria, because, like slime molds, in part of their life cycle they come together and glide in search of nutrients. This coordination in swarms (microbiologists actually call them wolf packs!) allows them to pool their secretions of extracellular digestive enzymes to kill and consume microorganisms. When nutrients are scarce, tens of thousands of individual cells aggregate to form these fruiting bodies. This improves colony survival in two ways -- first because the cells can pool their secreted digestive enzymes, and second because the fruiting bodies have a localized concentration of spores, which can then germinate to form a new colony. I find this fascinating and beautiful, and so incredibly cool! When you photograph at such high magnifications, the depth of field is measured in thousandths of a millimeter, so focus stacking is a must. The microscope lens is mounted on my camera, and the camera/lens is mounted on an electronic rail that moves in micro millimeter steps to take hundreds of photos, each with a slightly different focal point. Specialized software is then used to combine the in-focus portions of each individual image. Its quite a challenge to do this work, but I love the challenge, and the results of that effort. Entonces pienso que nunca me compré un par porque cuando visito a mi ex, siempre se las uso y me hacen transpirar los pies. Y pienso en nuestros ex, que no dejaron de serlo del todo. En como supimos reconfigurar esto que sentimos y como fue mutando para convertirse en un sin nombre que nos contiene (a veces) y resignifica. Ensayo nuevamente hundirme en otras pieles, encapsularme en un recipiente hermético donde todo estalla y evoluciona; mientras otros yo que me habitan van planchando nuevas capas de sentido. You know it is going to be a good day when your first peek through a microscope in a long time yields such a magnificent view! This year has been one of major life changes and watershed moments for me personally and professionally. So much has been happening, I haven’t had a moment to catch my breath even! A new home, new job, moving in with my loving life partner (and best friend), newly adopted pet (one more on the way), loss of my beloved dog who was much much more than a pet to me (he was everything), a new tattoo (dedicated to my dog Coco), incredible experiences ranging from conservation field work to debuting as a speaker on stage to meeting and befriending some incredible people ! Phew. I am sure I have managed to leave some things out owing to my poor memory! But coming back to the beach sand grains in the pictures above, what a sample I happened to pick up from my last trip to Goa! Microscopic remnants of #marine animals including the single-celled #foraminifera, micro-mollusks, sponge spicules, #coral and rock fragments and what not, all that in one tiny pinch if #sand, all in a single frame! Al igual que muchas especies de anfibios en el Ecuador, las poblaciones de la Rana arlequín hocicuda (Atelopus longirostris - en fotos) y la Rana cohete confusa (Ectopoglossus confusus) enfrentan situaciones muy adversas sin embargo, la destrucción del su hábitat es la principal problemática. Estas dos especies habitan en la zona de Intag, en donde se desarrolla el proyecto minero Lumiragua, quienes han tomado ventaja al desarrollar sus actividades en un país en donde el ente regulador juega un papel nulo o casi nulo en el control y peor aún en el otorgamiento de permisos ambientales para estas prácticas extractivas.
