Okay now back to where we left off 😆 We made it! Not sure how we made it on time, but we did. I left Alex out in the car because he wasnt allowed to come into the building because of the STUPID virus. So he sat outside and waited until I was done. I was so nervous! You can tell when I am nervous when I start singing my sentences or I get really loud 🤣 I forgot my paperwork in my car so I had to run back outside to get it! I felt like such a scatter brain. I just wanted to get it over with! I went back inside, signed all the paperwork - there is surprisingly a lot - was I buying a house??? I went and sat down and waited to be called back to an exam room. There were a lot of people there also waiting. I was told later that they do about 15 surgeries a day! I was hoping to be able to record my surgery, because I got to watch my husbands surgery pre-covid and I wanted him to be able to see mine, but they wouldnt allow me to record anything because of HIPAA 🤷‍♀️ Then my name was called!!! I was actually pretty calm at this point. Excited to get it done even. I was walked back to my exam room where they would prep me with a hair net and walk me through the steps of the surgery. And then it was waiting time. I waited about 45 min. My mom called me during this time to wish me luck. Alex text me that the building next to the one I was in was on fire 🔥 Wait what???? Then my brain started racing 😂 what if MY building catches on fire while I am in the middle of surgery and they leave me in there under the lazer???? Then Alex said that just the fire alarm was going off and that there wasnt actually a fire. THANK GOODNESS. But still, I hadnt even thought about the possibility of some emergency happening while I was in surgery. Why does the brain go to weird places when we are nervous 🤦‍♀️ Then the manager came in and notified me that I was up next! I listened carefully outside my door and I heard the man that had his surgery before me come out and say wow, this is amazing! I knew he was done and my heart stopped - excitement and fear completely took over. The door opened and the doctor said, Hi Andra, we are ready for you! Give me an example of a compliment that is not based on looks or weight below 👇🏽⠀ ⠀ A few weeks ago, a Chulas I work with said: ⠀ ⠀ “I wish we were taught to stop giving looks based compliments, I feel so validated based on my looks but I want to be more” ⠀ ⠀ She then told us she asked her husband to stop complimenting her on her looks, I need to ask her in our Facebook group this week how that’s going 😂⠀ ⠀ But seriously we need to stop this as much as possible because we are more than just a body. And so many of us literally can’t find ourselves unless we have outside validation that we are “pretty enough” or “skinny enough” or “fit enough” and DAMN IT. We are more than that. We are intelligent creatures that have so much to give and do with our lives than trying to shrink ourselves to fit in. And honestly the world needs to be more inclusive and we need to demand that. ⠀ This chula also admitted that she never even thought of herself outside of her looks. ⠀ ⠀ She’s a mom, successful teacher, and so much more than just looks. And she’s been working really really really hard on finding herself outside of that and I am oh so very proud of her. She’s been taking the time to listen to her body. She’s working out because she wants to feel good. AND she even ate her mother in laws pupusas which she had not had in YEARS. and she’s just feeling better. Yes she had bad days we all do. Something I’ve never done is talk publicly about my body, mainly because I don’t think it matters and also because I really do wish it was different! Even at my absolute most depressed and frail, I was still “too short”- not that that ever actually stopped me working at a model. I have modelled consistently for the last 5 years, been with 3 diff agencies, have shot lots of good, big things and I think I am also quite good at it. A few weeks ago when I was trying to work, I heard my 4-year-old melting down because she decided she hated the sound of the washing machine, a sound she’d never even registered before. Though I knew my husband and parents were tending to her, I still felt my heart start to race, my blood pressure spike, and some part of my lizard brain told me to go comfort my child. I wanted to find out: why did I have this physical response even though intellectually I knew my kid was OK? I asked the experts, and it turns out our brains react to children’s cries within milliseconds, and that sets off a cascade of physical responses. Because many of us need to work from home with our kids for the foreseeable future, I also asked @drcrystallistens for advice about how to cope. This should have been posted days ago. I want to recognize that up front. I needed a few days for my words to catch up to my heart. Here’s my truth - social media currently feels like a minefield. While desperately wanting to show love and support for the black community…knowing how to properly do so on screen feels impossible in the moment. Do we post, do we not post? Does my lack of posts say something? Does my posting of anything else reflect disrespect? How do we support and take real action? What SHOULD I be posting? While some may find strength in people being “muted” other mays desperately need the vocal public demonstration of support and love. It feels like any possible move might create damage to another soul and/or an explosion your heart truly never meant to set off. Like navigating an emotion minefield. But at some point you have to move. You have to make a choice, and take a stand. Even if you get it wrong. I’m not going to chance remaining quiet when one single person may need to hear my voice to set off their own ripple of change our country so desperately needs. I’m a white female who grew up in a predominately white community, currently raising my own children in a predominately black community. I’m not going to sit here and pretend that I have always got it right. Or that I even have it right now. But I can tell you down to my core, I want to get it right. And I will continue to make the effort to create the long over due change we need. I believe that change starts at home, in the heart. That change starts with me and my kids. With you and yours. That change starts with me gifting my daughter every skin tone baby doll I could find for Christmas so she could physically see and admire the beautiful types of people in her own play. In her own heart at the age of 2. That change comes from years and decades of conversation and physical demonstration of the ADMIRATION and love of different skin tone. We’re not color blind. We see our differences in melanin, AND IT IS BEAUTIFUL. THAT CHANGE COMES FROM ONE LITTLE GIRL SEEING HER SKIN TONE IN YOUR COOKIES. You don’t know what you’re getting yourself into. • Your blueberry might have the perfect texture and flavor…or it could be sour, overripe and disgusting 😭😱🤢 It’s no wonder kids can become hesitant to eat produce. • Of course, this is just one of the reasons kids can struggle to eat their veggies and fruits, but we hope it helps you understand where they’re coming from. They’re not trying to be difficult - they’re struggling and still learning. It takes time. 1) If you have a crunch lover, check out our blog post entitled “Why do kids love crunchy foods?” {Link in bio.} We offer specific tips to help you successfully introduce more textures. 2) Don’t stop serving veggies and fruits, but stick to a teeny tiny amount on the tray or plate. One or two blueberries is a great place to start if they’re reluctant to try them. 3) Try to weed out any produce that might be overripe, bruised or mushy like you would do for yourself.
