📍Secretary bird... We where driving along the R712 toward Durban, and I spotted these two building a nest. It was the second time I had ever seen a secretary bird. Long post alert! Well that’s the 2020 Raptor Fair done and dusted. Organising the fair this year was certainly a challenge, but the feedback suggests that it was worth it. The fair is a collective effort, and i am going to do my best not to forget anyone. As normal the NCBP staff were utterly amazing. On bird staff were Sarah, Jimmy and Ben. We figured out what Ben does here on Saturday evening, but sadly we had forgotten what it was by the morning. These guys did most of the demos and made the weekend run how it was supposed to. The NCBP cafe and shop staff did the entrance gates and the Owl House Cafe. They were, Ben, Caroline, Vicki (my wife), Morwenna, Sarah and Chloe. The NCBP volunteer team, as normal, stepped things up a notch and smashed it. In no particular order they were, Lynn, Nick, Amy, Kieran, Jamie, Owen, Hayley, Davey, Nicole, Abigail and Keith - these lovely people gave up their spare time to do the car parking, empty the bins, sort the BBQ and generally do all the thankless back-room jobs. Thank you, thank you, thank you - you guys rock. Our guest falconers this year were:- Ben Long - falconry grandee and general falconry legend Xavier Morel - widely regarded as the coolest guy in European falconry Nathalie Denolf - widely regarded as being perfect in every way Gary Swainson - the guy who made out that he had a vegan Barn Owl who ate tofu! These guys flew everything from a Bateleur to a white Gyr Falcon. They were funny, educational and generally awe-inspiring to watch. Mark Naguib MRCVS did his normal vet seminar, outside this year to enable social distancing. As expected it was very well attended, as it should be. Alan Walker did a grand job organising the Eagle Group - what an amiable Geordie he is 😀 We were down on stand holders this year - but the ones who came reported record sales and they all did a great job of setting up some fantastic stands selling the best furniture you’ll find anywhere. Guys - I’ll be in touch soon regarding next year. Thank you for coming in challenging circumstances. The Fair can take place because our landlords, Jake and Raffa Duncombe. Portrait of a Goshawk. I have been recovering from a nasty bout of gastro. Luckily I don’t often get sick, which is fantastic, no complaints, except to note that I don’t really know what it feels like, so when I am struck down with illness I tend to think I am dying!! It has passed and it seems like I am alive and well so have spent a busy week at work and setting up a new MacBook Pro to replace my old one which is struggling!! The new machine is up and working and is much faster. Processing images seems so much easier!! I dropped into a patch of bush on the way to work today hoping to capture images of Fairy Wrens, Red Capped Parrots, and perhaps the Horsfield’s Bronze Cuckoo which continues to elude me. On the way in I noticed a Goshawk fly out of some thick trees and away over the hill. I found a spot to hide overlooking a dead tree and some low scrub and waited to see what came along. Plenty of little birds about!! A shadow of a larger bird passed overhead and I looked up this beautiful Goshawk land on a branch right in front of me. So unexpected. I rarely see Goshawks in the open. He knew I was there, he kept glancing in my direction, but, his focus was down into the scrub beneath, on the hunt? I was able to capture some great images, nice light and clear blue sky background!! The Goshawk kept looking down and I really hoped he wouldn’t catch one of the beautiful blue Fairy Wrens or Thornbills that I had been watching just moments before. After a few moments he took off into a thicket. Het was genieten in Groningen gisteren tijdens de roofvogelexcursie! We zagen o.a. Zeearenden, Visarenden, Blauwe kiekendieven, een Roodpootvalk, een Smelleken en zeer, zeer grote aantallen Buizerds, Torenvalken en Bruine kiekendieven, maar de show werd gestolen door Grauwe kiekendieven van alle leeftijden. International Vulture Awareness Day Vultures are large carrion-eating birds that live predominantly in the tropics and subtropics and found in every continent except for Australia and Antarctica. The seven species of New World vultures include condors, and the 15 Old World species include the lammergeier and griffons. All of the New World vultures and some of the Old World vultures have bare heads, a condition that prevents feathers from matting with blood when the birds reach inside carcasses. Most vultures have a large pouch in the throat (crop) and can go for long periods without food—adaptations to a feast-or-famine scavenging lifestyle. Most have broad food habits, consuming carrion, garbage, and even excrement, but rarely do they descend upon live animals. Andhra Pradesh is home to six species of vultures namely White-backed Vulture, Long-billed Vulture, Indian Griffon Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, King Vulture and Cinereous Vulture. Ratusan merpati pos terbang mengikuti latihan Lomba One Loft Race Kandang Nasional Rajamandala di Lapangan Kiarapayung, Jatinangor, Kabupaten Sumedang. Sebanyak 706 burung beradu kecepatan untuk sampai terlebih dahulu ke Kandang Nasional Rajamandala, Kabupaten Bandung Barat. Jarak udara Jatinangor - Rajamandala sekitar 45 km yang ditempuh dengan kecepatan tercepat 1000 meter/menit. Jarak tersebut bisa ditempuh dalam rentang waktu 30 menit hingga 1 jam oleh satu ekor merpati pos terlatih. Catatan waktu tempuh bisa saja berubah tergantung cuaca dan predator pemangsanya. Semakin cepat merpati tersebut mencapai titik finish, nilai jualnya akan semakin meningkat. Estaba yo enviando un audio cuando de pronto escucho un golpe seco en el suelo, me vuelvo a mirar y veo algo que parecía una paloma ¡pero no era una paloma! le doy dos disparos sin mirar el seteo de la cámara, miro el visor y él emprende vuelo con una cria de tuca tuca u otro reodor en las garras! Y no sabía que puta hacer y al tratar de enfocar en vuelo, lo pierdo detrás de muralla de marañas. Logré una foto del milano chico (Gampsonyx swansonii) sobre el hoyo del tuca tuca (Ctenomys conoveri). Y creo que nunca más se me va a presentar la oportunidad de tomar una foto de esas dos especies en esa situación. Esta foto la saqué en Mirador de Cóndored en Cajón del Maipo después de un trekking de 3 horas con la cámara de más de 3 kilos en la mano para no perderme ningún momento! Me quedé horas esperando el momento que los cóndores se acercaran, en un instante habían docenas de ellos sobrevolando en la altura. Este es al parecer un ejemplar macho saliendo de su etapa juvenil. Fue tan emocionante que pasaran tan cerca, el sonido de sus alas con el viento creaba una melodía única! I took this photo at Mirador de Cóndores in Cajón del Maipo after a 3 hour trek with a camera weighing more than 3 kilos in my hand so I dont miss any moment! I waited hours for the condors to approach, in an instant there were dozens of them flying overhead. This is apparently a male specimen emerging from its juvenile stage. It was so exciting that they passed so close, the sound of their wings in the wind created a unique melody! It’s time for fall migration around the Great Lakes! Warblers, hawks, and monarch butterflies are passing through on their way back to warmer habitats. The distance many of them travel never ceases to amaze me! I remember seeing a warbler last year in Peru and wondering if she had ever passed through my backyard over 3,700 miles away. Isn’t nature incredible? It always comes back to connection for me. Despite spanning the greatest distances, we are all so connected! That warbler depends on healthy ecosystems in my backyard and in the lovely forests of Peru that so many wonderful people are working to protect. Not in OC, but a bird that once roamed there. The California condor, the largest bird in North America. There’s only around 300 of them in the wild (160 of them in California, the rest in Arizona, Utah, and Baja Mexico) and I was fortunate enough to see this magnificent bird on a trip before the recent fires struck. At the time, I wasn’t aware that it was not just any condor, it was condor 190, also known as Redwood Queen. For years she was at the bottom of the dominance hierarchy of the local condor flock. Harassed constantly and last to feed/drink. That was until she paired up with condor 167 Kingpin, the dominant male of the flock. She picked out a nesting site in the cavity of a redwood tree, the first documented California condor to do so. And what a great spot she chose. Her baby, Iniko, stayed safe high up enough in its nest as the recent Dolan fire scorched the lower part of the tree and the ground below. Unfortunately, the Dolan fire has done some significant damage. It completely destroyed the condor sanctuary in Big Sur. Please consider donating to the @VentanaWildlifeSociety fund to rebuild. They do amazing conservation work with the California condors. Selon Robin Derozier, éco garde à la MEL, c’est la première fois que cela arrive, sur une aussi longue période Qui est-il ? 📍C’est un rapace de la famille des aigles qui mesure 160 cm d’envergure. 📍 Sa particularité est de pêcher pour se nourrir. Il fait un vol stationnaire au-dessus de l’eau puis plonge entièrement, les pattes en premières. Il doit faire beaucoup d’efforts pour en sortir, surtout quand il a réussi à attraper un poisson. 📍Autre particularité, c’est un rapace migrateur, il ne niche pas chez nous mais est seulement de passage deux fois par an, au printemps et à l’automne. A fire official had just drawn an “X” in white on the windshield of Joe Burnett’s truck on Sept. 2, clearing him and his colleague Darren Gross to enter the burn zone in Big Sur. Biologists with Ventana Wildlife Society, they were climbing through the forest near Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Their goal was to reach a redwood tree that served as a nesting site for condor chick and live-cam celebrity Iniko. The fate of Iniko was unknown after the Dolan Fire reached the area and cut off the feed of the live cam from a cavity in a redwood where the chick’s nest was located. “It was freshly burned,” Burnett says. “An eerie landscape. Ash covered the ground like snow.” Still, he was optimistic: “I didn’t know if Iniko was alive but you have trust in the redwoods.” They reached a point on a ridge above the nest. A cable was burned and the camera’s solar panel had melted like a Salvador Dalí clock, but there was Iniko. The fire had reached up the trunk to within 10 feet of the nest. With this sighting, the official count of condors missing in the Dolan Fire dropped to 11, which includes two other chicks. Searching for adult condors is much easier. Some are tagged with a GPS device, and their survival can be determined from the comfort of an office. The others must be tracked from the field using the battery-powered radio transmitters attached to their wings. Every single one of the 500 condors in the wild is accounted for. It’s two days after Iniko was found, and Burnett is out in his pickup again. He pulls off Highway 1 near the mouth of the Little Sur River. “This is a radio telemetry receiver,” he says as he unfolds a metal antenna attached to a brick of a device with a tiny screen flashing radio frequencies. He’s facing inland, looking at the canyon from which the river flows and points out Pico Blanco mountain. “I look for windows into the backcountry,” he says while he scans the sky. 🔎 Un ghjornu, un ritrattu : à la découverte de la biodiversité nustrale avec le CEN Corse ! 🧐 Connaissez-vous le Gypaète barbu ? Le Gypaète barbu 🦅(Gypaetus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758) ou « l’altore » en corse, est une espèce de rapace nécrophage 😊 charognard) qui vit dans les massifs montagneux 🏔. C’est l’une des 4 espèces de vautours présentes en France et le plus grand rapace de Corse ! Il doit son qualificatif “barbu” à la présence d’un masque de plumes noires entourant son œil 👁 (clair, cerclé de rouge) et descendant à la base du bec. En vol, il est facilement reconnaissable à son envergure (près de 3 m), au contraste de son plumage (ventre clair, dos, ailes et queue sombres) et à sa queue en forme de losange ♦️. En Corse, le plumage du Gypaète est de couleur claire ⚪️ alors que celui du continent est plutôt orange/rouille 🔶 (ce dernier se baigne dans des sources contenant de l’oxyde de fer, qui ne sont pas/peu présentes en Corse). L’espèce est protégée 🔒 au niveau national. Suivis depuis longtemps par le @parc_naturel_regional_de_corse (PNRC), ses effectifs ont chuté 〽️ en Corse ces dernières années, passant de 10 à 5 couples entre 2008 et 2014 (nb de jeunes à l’envol très faible). Un Plan National d’Actions (2010-2020) a été mis en place. Mené par le PNRC en Corse, il vise à rétablir ✅ cette population gravement menacée d’extinction. En 2014, un projet de renforcement de la population a été lancé (lâcher de 10 gypaètes juvéniles sur la période 2016-2020). Le CEN Corse est impliqué depuis de nombreuses années en concertation avec le PNRC dans des actions « Gypaètes » 🦅(participation aux comptages bénévoles et salariés). Amig@s! Compartimos con ustedes esta conmovedora secuencia del cortejo y apareamiento de dos cóndores (Vultur gryphus). Las parejas de cóndores son conocidas por ser monogamas, es decir, que mantienen una pareja para toda la vida, excepto si uno de los dos muere. El proceso de cortejo y reproducción de esta especie sucede aproximadamente cada dos años, lo que hace que existan pocos registros de este proceso en forma silvestre. En el cortejo ambos deben aceptarse mutuamente para llegar a aparearse. Luego de la incubación el polluelo necesita de la protección y cuidados de sus padres por un año y medio aproximadamente, para luego integrarse a la población. La cicogna nera in volo.  Arriva a due metri di apertura alare con un peso di ca 3 kg (che per un volatile non è poco). E una specie rarissima come nidificante (si riproduce principalmente nel nord Europa e solo una ventina di coppie sono state censite in Italia nel 2019).  Speriamo che nei prossi anni la cicogna nera possa accasarsi in qualche boschetto isolato e traquillo dei nostri parchi fluviali. Time for another CONDOR UPDATE! What a whirlwind of emotions so far in 2020. We’ve had devastating news coming at us throughout the year, so we want to give you a little ray of sunshine! We are thrilled to report that Condor 1027, the only condor nestling in the park this year, has flown from her nest a full month early! This precocious youngster bravely opened her huge wings and took a leap of faith into the air on Friday, September 18. Young condors typically fledge, or take their first flight, after six months in the nest. Condor 1027 is only 5 months old and was clearly itching to gain some independence! She’s been seen taking short flights and making awkward landings as she learns to navigate this new airborne world. Interestingly, both of her older siblings (Condor 828 in 2016 and Condor 912 in 2018) were raised in the same nest, and they also both fledged a month early. It seems this particular site offers a lot of room to roam and exercise, so they are able to build up their flight muscles more quickly than typical condor nestlings. Condor 1027 will stay close to both of her parents for up to another year until she is fully independent. She will eventually take longer and longer flights, so hopefully you’ll be able to see her in the skies above Pinnacles in the not-too-distant future! #RAPACES_CHILENAS ¡Aprendamos sobre las amenazas y el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada! Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile. Esta mañana el #equipoderescate captura un volantón de #buitrenegro que llevaba varios días en la zona del C.C. @tresaguas en Alcorcón. En cuanto recibimos el aviso, nos pusimos en marcha y, a pesar que el jovencito conseguía dar vuelos de varios cientos de metros, conseguimos atraparlo en una de las ocasiones en que bajó al suelo a descansar. Tuvimos suerte de que decidiera descansar en un descampado abiertos, lo que facilitó su captura... Often seen riding thermals in a wobbly circle, turkey vultures, soar above in search of carrion. Los jotes de @Pumakawareserva⁣⁣⁣⁣ ¿Sabes cuáles son las principales diferencias entre #Corona, nuestro jote cabeza roja y #Coco, nuestro jote cabeza negra?⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Ambos son de la familia de los buitres, pero no pertenecen al mismo género en su taxonomía.⁣⁣⁣⁣ Los jotes cabeza roja (Cathartes aura) suelen ser más altos y con una envergadura mayor a los de cabeza negra (Coragyps atratus), sin embargo, estos últimos pueden llegar a pesar más que los primeros. En cuanto a la alimentación, ambos son aves de carroña. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ El jote cabeza negra prefiere tierras abiertas entremezcladas con áreas con bosques o arbustos y podemos encontrarlo en zonas húmedas, pastizales, pantanos y bosques degradados. Por su parte, el jote cabeza roja prefiere zonas de campo abierto, bosques subtropicales, matorrales, desiertos y el piedemonte. También habita pastizales, praderas y humedales pero, por lo general, evita las zonas de bosques densos.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Hay muchísimas diferencias y similitudes entre estas especies. Tal vez, una la que más nos interese tenga que ver con cómo diferenciarlos al vuelo. Así que aquí va el dato de los datos:⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ El jote cabeza negra tiene las puntas de sus alas color blanco. Es como si sus alas negras tuvieran puestos guantes blancos. #RAPACES_CHILENAS ¡La semana del jote de cabeza negra ha iniciado! Planeando en los cielos, imponente, se encuentra el cathartiforme más pequeño de nuestro país... Gregario, se alimenta de carroña y en ocasiones también de animales moribundos, los cuales encuentra volando en círculos y utilizando su visión, a diferencia del jote de cabeza colorada, que emplea el sentido olfato. Posee un vuelo característico, en el que intercala planeos con las alas horizontales y seis o siete aleteos fuertes. El jote de cabeza negra se distribuye desde el extremo norte del país hasta Aysén. Generalmente se le ve volando en pareja o en grupos dispersos, y es común que se encuentren acompañados de tiuques y caranchos a la hora de alimentarse, quienes aprovechan la comida y la protección de las bandadas de jotes. Debemos proteger a esta grandiosa ave rapaz, que limpia nuestro planeta de cuerpos de animales en descomposición, pues sin ella podrían acumularse y propagar enfermedades, lo que habla de la importancia de su rol ecológico. A partir del próximo lunes (14 de Septiembre) comienza a realizarse el tour de cerro mauco (cerca de San Felipe). El treking consiste en una caminata que comienza a las 8:30 de la mañana con el objetivo de llegar a a la cima de un cerro dónde se avistan aguilas y Condores. En el recorrido está la posibilidad ver cernícalos, peucos, Chunchos, carpinteritos, loicas, degús, aguiluchos, pequenes, turcas, zorros culpeo y muchas cosas más, además en primavera el cerro comienza a florecer y en la cima se tiene una hermosa vista de la cordillera.
