We are very sad to share the news that our beloved North Island kaka Monty has passed away. At 50 years old, Monty, who hatched at Auckland Zoo in January 1970, was the worlds oldest known kaka in captivity. He arrived at Staglands in 1999 and lived here alongside his kea cousins in The Kea Aviary, where he endeared himself to our many visitors with his cheeky antics. We’re ecstatic to welcome to our team a five month old Bald Eagle who we have named Wallace. Our naming theme for this year is naturalists so he’s been named after Alfred Russell Wallace, the British naturalist, explorer, geographer, anthropologist, biologist and illustrator. We’ve teamed him up for training with Simon Christer from our Bird Team and we’ll keep you up to date with his progress - watch this space! In time, we hope that he’ll be a star of our displays alongside veteran superstar, Danebury. For subscribers, the cat has been out of the bag for a couple of weeks, but today I am deeply PROUD to celebrate my first feature story on the physical pages of the October issue of @natgeo Magazine. Not only is the personal feeling one that causes a welling in the eyes, the feeling of giving a threatened species exposure on the pages of this respected platform—is of deep satisfaction, and gratification. . I grew up ensconced in the pages of National Geographic. I was enamoured with the oceans of @daviddoubilet , as I’d grown up next to the Red Sea, and his pictures, no matter what water body they were taken in, took me back to the only place I’ve ever called Home. NG was my animal dream world, the pages where magic happened, and the place where I got all the facts for my middle school reports. I’m not sure then that I wanted to be the photographer, but, I wanted to be with the animals-the way the photographers on those pages got to be with the animals. . Today I’m grateful and humbled. Thank you to @rachel_nuwer for the wonderful reporting, to @alexa_keefe and @kfmoran the trust in assigning this to me, and @evertonbpmiranda & Charles Munn for the incredible and thankless work you are doing to bring light to and help the magical Harpy Eagle. 22 meters up, in the forest canopies of South America, lives Harpia Harpyja. Their forests are threatened by human destruction—deforestation and fires, but, they persevere. If you are ever able to see this species in person, please take the opportunity. To watch this eagle exist, is to affirm our smallness as humans; it’s a truly humbling experience. . I’d put more of the story here, but, I’m just going to smile and say, “read it in the magazine!’ because today I can. Thank you to all who made this happen. The October issue is a personal milestone. Según cuenta un mito altiplánico, cuando el cóndor siente que envejece, se posa en el pico más alto de las montañas, repliega sus alas y se deja caer contra el fondo de las quebradas, donde termina su reinado. Estaba yo enviando un audio cuando de pronto escucho un golpe seco en el suelo, me vuelvo a mirar y veo algo que parecía una paloma ¡pero no era una paloma! le doy dos disparos sin mirar el seteo de la cámara, miro el visor y él emprende vuelo con una cria de tuca tuca u otro reodor en las garras! Y no sabía que puta hacer y al tratar de enfocar en vuelo, lo pierdo detrás de muralla de marañas. Logré una foto del milano chico (Gampsonyx swansonii) sobre el hoyo del tuca tuca (Ctenomys conoveri). Y creo que nunca más se me va a presentar la oportunidad de tomar una foto de esas dos especies en esa situación. Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile. Time for another CONDOR UPDATE! What a whirlwind of emotions so far in 2020. We’ve had devastating news coming at us throughout the year, so we want to give you a little ray of sunshine! We are thrilled to report that Condor 1027, the only condor nestling in the park this year, has flown from her nest a full month early! This precocious youngster bravely opened her huge wings and took a leap of faith into the air on Friday, September 18. Young condors typically fledge, or take their first flight, after six months in the nest. Condor 1027 is only 5 months old and was clearly itching to gain some independence! She’s been seen taking short flights and making awkward landings as she learns to navigate this new airborne world. Interestingly, both of her older siblings (Condor 828 in 2016 and Condor 912 in 2018) were raised in the same nest, and they also both fledged a month early. It seems this particular site offers a lot of room to roam and exercise, so they are able to build up their flight muscles more quickly than typical condor nestlings. Condor 1027 will stay close to both of her parents for up to another year until she is fully independent. She will eventually take longer and longer flights, so hopefully you’ll be able to see her in the skies above Pinnacles in the not-too-distant future! Today is Threatened Species Day. This day commemorates the tragic death of the last remaining Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger) at Hobart Zoo on Sept 7, 1936. The death of this animal led to the thylacine species becoming extinct, which is a fate shared by more than 100 Australian animal and plant species over the past 200 years. With the Blue Mountains alone having over 160 rare or threatened plants and animals, it is also a day to celebrate the amazing conservation work done via Council’s conservation and restoration programs – that are supported by hundreds of volunteers – including Bushcare, Remote Bushcare, Swampcare and the Bush Backyards programs. As the weather starts to get colder, people often ask us how our birds stay warm, particularly African species like Nugget, the Bateleur Eagle pictured below. However, even in some parts of Africa the winter temperatures can drop to -2c with ground frosts, so they have to cope in the wild! Did you know that a birds’ feathers provide insulation against the cold? A birds body heat warms up the air between their feathers, so birds often fluff up in the cold to trap as much air as possible; the more air they trap, the warmer they are. In addition, a special oil that birds rub onto their feathers from a gland near their tails also provides waterproofing, so that they can stay warm and dry! Gregario, se alimenta de carroña y en ocasiones también de animales moribundos, los cuales encuentra volando en círculos y utilizando su visión, a diferencia del jote de cabeza colorada, que emplea el sentido olfato. IT’S SPOOKY SEASON Y’ALL!!! NO TIME FOR CUTE LITTLE BIRDS!!! Jk, there will definitely still be cute birds, but today let’s show some love to the Turkey Vulture (Cathartes aura). Alright, maybe love is a strong word, but they’re certainly fascinating! Turkey vultures large size makes them hard to miss when soaring through the sky. To distinguish them from a passing hawk or eagle, vultures tend to make a V shape when they fly, hardly flap their wings, and move in wobbly circles. If you love sleeping in, you and this bird have something in common, as vultures are not early morning fliers. Turkey vultures like to soar more than flap, and they can do this by catching warm rising air currents called thermals. Thermals tend to form later in the morning after the sun rises. Using this method some researchers say that vultures can travel 200 miles in a single day. Turkey vultures do not have a syrinx, or voice box, so you won’t be hearing any beautiful, melodic songs or calls from these birds. Instead their sounds are limited to hisses and grunts. If those noises aren’t enough to scare off predators, they will resort to vomiting to protect themselves. They can launch this predator repellent up to 10 ft!! Vulture vomit is kinda gross, but wait, there is more fun stuff they do! Vultures aren’t able to sweat, so to cool off in hot weather they defecate on their legs. It’s also said they do this to give their feet a cleansing wash. WHAT?! Turkey vultures have incredible imune systems which allows them to eat dead animals. Their digestive juices can kill bacteria, and what comes out after eating might be cleaner than what went in. For a vulture that spends an afternoon standing on a dead carcass, it might be a good idea to give their feet a rinse. Turkey vultures can be found from southern Canada all the way to South America, and for the most part it’s only northern populations of vultures that migrate. If you see what looks like tornado of vultures in the late morning, it’s possible they are preparing to head south. 🎵Carrion my wayward son🎵 If you look to the sky above Tonto National Monument, you may notice this seasonal resident. Often seen riding thermals in a wobbly circle, turkey vultures, soar above in search of carrion. Instead of hunting down prey, these birds clean up the countryside by using their noses to find already dead animals (carrion). Regardless of how the animal died (predator, disease, car), these birds dive down and begin to feast. Luckily for them, their bright red head is featherless to help them stay clean in the process. Son 10 mil pesos la salida (el grupo entero) y para subir el cerro maximo 3 personas, con la opción de no subir el cerro y caminar por un sendero si son más personas. Esta mañana el #equipoderescate captura un volantón de #buitrenegro que llevaba varios días en la zona del C.C. @tresaguas en Alcorcón. En cuanto recibimos el aviso, nos pusimos en marcha y, a pesar que el jovencito conseguía dar vuelos de varios cientos de metros, conseguimos atraparlo en una de las ocasiones en que bajó al suelo a descansar. Tuvimos suerte de que decidiera descansar en un descampado abiertos, lo que facilitó su captura... Los jotes de @Pumakawareserva ¿Sabes cuáles son las principales diferencias entre #Corona, nuestro jote cabeza roja y #Coco, nuestro jote cabeza negra? Ambos son de la familia de los buitres, pero no pertenecen al mismo género en su taxonomía. Los jotes cabeza roja (Cathartes aura) suelen ser más altos y con una envergadura mayor a los de cabeza negra (Coragyps atratus), sin embargo, estos últimos pueden llegar a pesar más que los primeros. En cuanto a la alimentación, ambos son aves de carroña. El jote cabeza negra prefiere tierras abiertas entremezcladas con áreas con bosques o arbustos y podemos encontrarlo en zonas húmedas, pastizales, pantanos y bosques degradados. Por su parte, el jote cabeza roja prefiere zonas de campo abierto, bosques subtropicales, matorrales, desiertos y el piedemonte. También habita pastizales, praderas y humedales pero, por lo general, evita las zonas de bosques densos. Hay muchísimas diferencias y similitudes entre estas especies. Tal vez, una la que más nos interese tenga que ver con cómo diferenciarlos al vuelo. Así que aquí va el dato de los datos: El jote cabeza negra tiene las puntas de sus alas color blanco. Es como si sus alas negras tuvieran puestos guantes blancos. Su cola es corta y cuadrada, apenas sobrepasando el largo de las alas plegadas.
