Due to the harsh winter weather in Nepal rugs, carpets, blankets and clothes were first described as being woven from yak, sheep and rabbit. There’s big business in the textile industry throughout the Kathmandu valley in Nepal today. Cotton is largely grown by farmers in Gorkha, Tanahu and the Dang districts of western Nepal. Imports of raw cotton bales are also brought in from India. Los campesinos, viven hoy en pequeñas chacras, siguiendo con las tradiciones de los colonos originarios. Las casas son construidas sobre pilotes de madera; en las chacras se produce el alimento para el consumo familiar: maíz, porotos, arroz, mandioca, papas y animales de granja -pequeños paraísos-. Con los cultivos extensivos, se avanza sobre la selva virgen, abriendo caminos y deforestando. ---------------------------------------- Colonists: in Misiones, Argentina, there are still some small areas of jungle, in the south tongue of land that extends from Paraguay. There, the colonists from Brasil and Paraguay (mostly European immigrants from Poland, Ukraine and Germany) live in a tense equilibrium with the local ethnic Guaraní group Mbya. The farmers live in small ranches, following the traditions of the original colonists. Houses are built on wood stilts; in the ranches they produce the food for family consumption: corn, beans, rice, cassava, potatoes and farm animals -little paradise-. Friends of the Earth! Nanju and Jayamma are of the Beda tribe whose ancestors lived in the forests of Bandipur. Relocated in 1975, following the building of the Kabini dam, members of his community took their ancient culture into their new life outside of these forests. Aesthetically, his house, built using locally available materials, blends seamlessly with the surroundings and will leave no trace on the earth after its useful life. Though we are unable to maintain his high standards in leaving almost no ecological footprint, this ideology of sustainability has been our inspiration and guiding light. Ever the masters at fiddling the system, the Irish home owners started to install the half doors as a way around the tax. PART 3 - ‘As the waste crisis narrows and we start to look at our habits and how much waste we are creating, it’s equally as important to start questioning how this waste can actually be reduced and reused responsibly. On average only 30% of plastic bottles are being recycled, with 1.5 billion being used per day. So we find ourselves at a cross roads, and our reduce, reuse, recycle motto may be falling short as 70% of these bottle are being rejected and dumped into yet another overwhelmingly large pile of waste. Out of all the post consumer waste that we might put into our recycling bins including plastic, glass, metal, paper and cartons that “Typically, 50% of what you put in your recycling bin is never recycled. Its sorted and thrown out,” said Tom Szaky, CEO of @terracycle, a recycling company. This is partly due to user error, a common problem which occurs when people place un-recyclable materials into recycling bins. The error of this recycling issue, goes far wider than just plastic, even with the most conscious consumer washing bottles and jars, crushing cartons and breaking down boxes. We might sort these items into their designated bins or bags, but once we lose sight of the recyclables, the rest of the process is an abstraction. With this in mind, and the awareness that plastic is our largest pollutant, the question is; what can we do with this plastic on the other side of it’s intended singular life cycle? And how can we make make it more functional with the knowledge that it has a seriously sturdy and long life span? There are some very clever cookies around the world, entrepreneurs, who are finding all kinds of wonderful ways to turn bottles into construction objects such as fence posts, bricks, flooring, tiles, boats and more. With even complete houses being constructed from the use of plastic bottles. Petrichor is the first thing that comes to my mind when I look at this picture. That smell of earth after the rain is unforgettable.🌧🏞 And of course, the warm and soft fur of the dog that came closer to welcome my arrival to Cabrera.🐾🐕🐾 A picturesque town in the middle of nowhere resembling an oasis in a desert. Its silence predicts that it would be a real haven of peace and calm. Just before my real purpose, to find the base of the mind-blowing Monkey´s Waterfall.🏔 . . I could not forget the feeling of terror once I discovered an imposing waterfall that was only visible in the time of heavy rains in Barichara, located seven and a half kilometres away.
