The two surviving Littorio-class battleships Italia (formerly lead ship Littorio, shown closest to the camera) and Vittorio Veneto after reaching Malta in September 1943. Their sister ship Roma, which had been flagship of the Commander in Chief, Naval Battle Forces, Admiral Carlo Bergamini, was sunk by a pair of German PC 1400 X guided glider bombs, dropped from Dornier Do 217s while the contingent was en route from La Spezia. This loss of fleet leadership made for a tricky situation within the remaining ships, proceeding cautiously into the unknown only a day after orders arrived to sail for an Allied port instead of resisting invasion. They were met by their escorting Allied ships on the 10th, and arrived in Malta the next day. Breechblocks were removed, except for anti-aircraft guns, and an Allied presence was initially established aboard; there had been thoughts of scuttling upon arrival, but these intentions were subjugated by the placing of the battleships under the senior Italian officer at Malta, Admiral Alberto de Zara. aboard the battleship Caio Duilio, which had arrived from Taranto the previous day. - The two surviving Littorios were moved to Alexandria beginning on 14 September, along with the bulk of the fleet that had come over to the Allies at Malta; most of them would return to Italian ports in short order, to rejoin the fight after Italy’s declaration of war against Germany on 13 October. The Littorios were not so lucky, and were shuttled off to the Great Bitter Lake for several years of internment. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG1) has wrapped up their participation in the #German 🇩🇪 exercise GEREX in the Baltic Sea 🌊 The exercise, lead by the Commander of the German 1 Flotilla, brought together several assets from different NATO countries. During several days at sea, a vast ensemble of naval training was conducted focused mainly on surface, subsurface and above-water warfare. On September 15, 1950, during the Korean War, Marines with 1st Marine Division, under the strategic direction of General MacArthur, made a risky, surprise amphibious landing at the port of Inchon on the west coast of Korea, also known as Operation Chromite. The 1st Marine Division faced a daunting challenge — to deploy hurriedly down the narrow port under the worst tidal conditions they had ever experienced. Despite grueling conditions, the Marines were able to recapture Seoul, the South Korean capital that had fallen to the Communists. To commemorate the sacrifices of 1st Marine Division Korean War veterans during the conflict, Marines, veterans, and members of the Korean Consulate General gathered on Camp Pendleton to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Inchon Landing. The last major #USNavy ship sunk in #WWII, the cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35) delivered the final blow that ended the war. 75 years later, they’ve left a legacy of resilience and sacrifice. Honoring the service, sacrifice and resilience of the crew, @usnavycno has asked the Fleet for a moment of silence and members of Congress will present the survivors with the Congressional Gold Medal during a virtual ceremony today at 1100 EDT. The story of the WWII service and ultimate loss of Indianapolis is an important chapter in the story of the U.S. Navy. Days after delivering components of the atomic bomb later dropped on Hiroshima to a base in the Pacific, the cruiser was attacked by a Japanese sub just after midnight on July 30, 1945. Sinking within minutes, more than 880 of the ship’s 1,196 Sailors and Marines went into the water. After four to five days of exposure, drowning, and shark attacks, only 316 survived. Eight survivors remain alive today. While the ship’s final act has made her the subject of enduring public interest, it was her remarkable success in battle that made her and her crew legends. Eternal Patrol: USS POMPANO(SS-181) __________ This year marks 77 years since the disappearance of the Porpoise-class submarine USS POMPANO. It is believed she was lost between the dates of September 17 - October 30, 1943. To this day she remains among the eleven USN submarines whos loses remain a mystery. There are countless threats to a submarine at sea, and it is quite possible some of these mysteries will never be solved. The old POMPANO departed Midway on August 20, 1943, to conduct her 7th war patrol. She was never seen or heard from again. Her destination was the dangerous waters off the Japanese home islands, and she was to remain there until September 27th, at which time she was to return to Midway. Off the islands of Japan dangers were abundant. Low flying aircraft, magnetic mines, patrol craft, or even inconspicuous fishing vessels could spell your demise in an instant. It is believed, at this time, that POMPANO met her end with a Japanese magnetic mine. These mines had over 200lbs of high explosives packed within, enough to breach any pressure hull, causing the victim to go down in less than a minute usually. Another likely cause is a material casualty to the submarine or a system of the submarine. The older Porpoise-class boats were quite worn by 1943...with POMPANOs sister submarine POLLACK(SS-180) being notorious for putting her crew in danger more than the enemy ever did. It is possible something occurred while the submarine was submerged, resulting in a loss of depth control, and with her old riveted hull there would be very little time to save the submarine. This, in my opinion, is just as likley as the mine theory. Considering their proximity to the Japanese coastline, POMPANO wouldve spent her daytime hours submerged, making conservative periscope observations, save being spotted by the enemy. Whatever the cause to her loss, 78 men went with her, on eternal patrol. On the six war patrols prior to her loss POMPANO served her nation well. She was credited post-war by JANAC with five enemy ships, for 21,665 tons. This is half of her claimed score during the war.
