I am celebrating the conservation victory in Russia with this Russian killer whale that checked our boat out in the waters off Kamchatka Peninsula. The marine mammal eating killer whales has been added to the Red List which means that it will now be illegal to capture them for aquaria and zoos. After three years of development, a team of scientists and oceanographers from around the country has created a solution to whale fatalities caused by ship collisions and is debuting it right here in the Santa Barbara Channel. Whale Safe, an online tool providing near-real-time data to detect endangered whales, not only rates whale presence but also ranks shipping companies by their sensitivity to marine life. Morgan Visalli — a project scientist at Benioff Ocean Initiative, the UCSB-based collaboration of universities and oceanographic institutes that created the tool — says, “Nobody wants to hit or kill a whale, and they especially don’t want to come into port with a whale wrapped over the bow of a ship.” -- Benioff Ocean Initiative will hold a public information webinar on Whale Safe on Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m. PST. In 2018 the world watched with heavy hearts as J-35 (Tahlequah) carried her dead calf for 17 days, over 1,600 kilometers, throughout the Salish Sea. On September 4, 2020 Tahlequah became a mother again, giving birth to a healthy and precocious calf according to researchers at the Center of Whale Research. This calf brings the critically endangered population of Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) up to 73 individuals. At least two other females in the population are known to be pregnant as well. . Tahlequahs new calf is the first successful birth since J-56 (Tofino) was first spotted in Clayoquot Sound in the spring of 2019. This new calf, and the hope for two more in the near future, brings us a cautious new optimism for the SRKWs. Nutritional stress, resulting from the decline in chinook salmon availability, is one of the many factors that pose threat to the SRKWs. Because of this, a large percentage of pregnancies end in failure and calves face a 40% mortality rate. For Tahlequah, and the rest of the SRKWs, we hope this new calf is able to thrive. . The conservation and restoration of chinook salmon runs is one of the best ways we can help safe guard the future of the SRKWs. This September, Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society will be joining Tofino Resort and Marina for Fish for the Future, a conservation initiative aimed at raising money to protect wild salmon and the ecosystems they rely on. 100% of the proceeds raised by Fish for the Future will be dedicated to various Clayoquot Sound watershed projects in order to safeguard salmon populations for the future. Another birth for the endangered Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest! The Center for Whale Research has confirmed that J41, (Eclipse) gave birth on September 24th. This great news for the Jpod comes just 20 days after the announcement of Tahlequahs (J35) birth of a male calf, two years after the loss of her calf after just 18 days, and her heartbreaking tour of grief that she shared with the world. Reports share that her new calf J57, is doing very well! . The J,K and L pod Southern Resident orca population faces the ongoing risks of their declining food source (chinook salmon), boat traffic, noise, and pollution. These two births in one month are indeed cause for celebration, but this critically endangered population is still very much at risk. These two beautiful newborns bring the J,K, & L pod population up to 74 individuals. In a press conference on Tuesday, France’s minister of ecological transition announced that orca and dolphin shows will be gradually phased out over the next 7-10 years. 🇫🇷 Effective immediately, the country’s three marine parks are not allowed to import or breed dolphins or orcas, and no new dolphinariums will be built. “It is time to open a new era in our relationship with these (wild) animals” said the minister, arguing that animal welfare is a priority. . Mientras nos acercábamos por detrás de las ballenas cuando salían a respirar, sin querer mi amigo Bernardo, quien manejaba diestramente el zodiak en Alaska para que yo pudiera fotografiar la cola al hundirse, se acercó demasiado cuando emergió, lo que provocó una reacción de un gran coletazo de advertencia a escasos metros. La violencia y el estruendo fue algo indescriptible. When a whale breaches in front of the boat, but you cant zoom out to capture it whole ;) This photo was taken a few years ago and prior to this trip I had just spent a big chunk of cash on new equipment. I had decided to go all in and got myself a professional body (I mean camera body ;)) and a fixed 300mm prime lens. Among other benefits, fixed lenses produce sharper images and focus instantly, which is perfect for capturing fast moving wildlife. One of the downsides however is that you have no versatility whatsoever, so when this whale breached I was very happy with the speed of both my camera and lens (the image is in focus and razor sharp), but it was very challenging to fit the giant whale in the frame without having the possibility to zoom out. Nevertheless I was very happy with this photo still. And even if I had missed the moment completely, I would still have been smiling because thats the effect breaching whales have on me! P.s. Our showstoppers today on Stellwagen Bank were Dome and Music’s 2020 calf. We encountered Dome on both trips today. In the morning she was surface active and in the afternoon she was feeding with some bubble blasts and surface lunging. Music and calf were close to the boat in the afternoon and the calf spent a lot of time laying and rolling on top of mom. Косатки приплывают в этот район за тунцом в летний и осенний период. Обычно встречи с этими животными вызывают восторг. Но в этом году он быстро сменялся на страх. ⠀ Косатки сначала спокойно плыли рядом с судном и радовали людей своим присутствием, а потом начинали окружать и кусать рулевое перо и киль яхт. Атаки продолжались от 20 минут и более 60 минут. В одном из случаев косатки оторвали кусок пера и оставили экипаж без управления. Капитан позвонил спасателям со словами: «На нас напали косатки!». ⠀ Почему они начали атаковать яхты? Ученые предположили, что такое поведение связано со стрессом. Есть мнение, что косатки разозлились на нас и у них есть на это много причин. Популяция в Гибралтарском проливе находится под угрозой исчезновения - их осталось менее 50 особей. Тунец, за которым они приплывают – также становится все более редким. Косатки буквально вынуждены соперничать с людьми за еду. Ходили слухи, что рыбаки нападали на косаток. Тунец в наше время – «золотая» рыба...поэтому не удивлюсь если это окажется правдой. ⠀ В Гибралтарском проливе большой судоходный трафик, а вместе с этим много шума и загрязнений. Во время пандемии были введены различные ограничения и трафик уменьшился. Сейчас все возобновляется – возможно и это злит косаток. Они успели привыкнуть к «лучшей» жизни, когда наш мир уменьшил натиск на их владения. ⠀ Конечно, это всего лишь теория. Реальную причину знают только сами косатки. Учитывая, что это очень умные и социальные животные – стресс и злость вполне могут объяснить нападения. В стаях косаток были замечены малыши. Возможно, взрослые особи хотели таким образом защитить своих детей. Именно малыши чаще всего погибают от травм при столкновениях с судами и запутывания в сетях. ⠀ Нападения на яхты – это лишь верхушка айсберга. Короли океанов чем-то недовольны и уже открыто это показывают. Ученые считают важным решать причины такого поведения, а не последствия. Очень надеюсь, что так и будет. А вы что думаете? The Matriarch: A11 was an incredible mother. Not only to her own daughter, A35, who now continues to grow her own family, but A11 took on the role of adopted mother to Springer, A73. After Springer was re introduced into the Northern resident orca community in 2002 she spent many years in the company of A11 and her family until sadly in 2013, A11 passed away. Her legacy lives on in every recording we make. The beautiful delivery of the N4 passed down from generations before her now transfers to the newest member of the family, A52’s baby, born this year! Frigid waters well up from the continental shelf here, carrying nutrients that support the planet’s largest cold water reef, along with massive populations of foundation fish. These attract some of the biggest concentrations of cetaceans in the world (humpbacks, sperm whales, and orcas) which put on incredible feeding displays as they drive herring into bait balls and gorge on the much-needed protein. In the spring of 2019, @sealegacy worked with partners in Norway—including @folkeaksjonen, @friends_earth Norway, Young Friends of the Earth Norway, and Workers Youth League—to support, amplify, and galvanize a movement to permanently protect Lofoten in Vesterålen and Senja in northern Norway from oil development. More than 53,000 SeaLegacy supporters joined together and signed the petition to tell the Norwegian parliament that the world was watching, that they stood with Norwegians in protecting this region for generations to come. On April 6, 2019, after the petition signatures were shared, a solid majority of Norway’s Labour Party voted to protect the Lofoten region from oil development, marking a critical turning point in this movement. Have you ever heard of right whale dolphins? There are two species of right whale dolphins and this is a southern right whale dolphin. Both southern and northern right whale dolphins lack a dorsal fin - like beluga whales - but they are actually dolphins. Southern right whale dolphins are one of the least well-known species of dolphins, in part due to its preference for deep, oceanic waters and its distribution throughout the cool temperate sub-Antarctic waters of the southern hemisphere. По мнению специалистов, именно в плохую погоду горбатые киты склонны больше времени проводить на поверхности. И тогда самое время за ними наблюдать! А в хорошую погоду они выныривают два-три раза, не больше. Почему горбатые киты чаще выныривают из воды в пасмурную и холодную погоду, точно неизвестно. Есть мнение, что они делают это для привлечения других китов, общения или в качестве предупреждения самцов-соперников. Так что экскурсантом очень повезло - они попали на представление длиной 90 минут, которое шло без антракта. Горбатые киты, несмотря на свои внушительные размеры, - не самые большие из китообразных. Они могут вырасти до 18 метров в длину и весить около 40 тонн, что составляет примерно половину от размеров синего кита. Но маленькими их тоже не назовешь. A female orca known best for carrying her dead calf with her for more than two weeks in apparent grief is now mother to a healthy male. Tahlequah, a killer whale living a pod of whales in Pacific Northwest waters, gave birth in early September. Researchers determined this week that her new calf is a boy, after examining images from a photographer who observed the orca pod on Tuesday near Point Roberts, Washington. The calf, known as J57 to researchers, was frolicking alongside Tahlequah (also known as J35) with other orcas close by, photographer Sara Hysong-Shimazu said in a news release from the Pacific Whale Watch Association. “It was really touching to see how active and social they were together and to see J57 surfacing with both his mom and surrounded by others in the community,” Hysong-Shimazu said. “He certainly seemed spunky and energetic!” Tahlequah made headlines in 2018 for carrying her dead calf, which had died minutes after being born, for 17 days. Deborah Giles, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for Conservation Biology, told HuffPost at the time that she felt it was accurate to describe the behavior as grieving. “This is completely unprecedented, and honestly your guess is as good as ours as far as what is going on here,” Giles said. “I think it’s really easy to put human emotions on it, but personally I think it’s accurate. I think she is grieving.” Tahlequah isn’t the only whale in her pod to have given birth recently. J41, also known as Eclipse, gave birth to a “rambunctious little bundle of baby” on Thursday, naturalist Leah Vanderwiel said in a release from the PWWA.
