📷 & 📝 by @rog_freedive: Breach. There are few marine animals who evoke the might and magnificence of the oceans as whales do. Thats probably why whales have been considered divine figures by many ancient cultures. In Polynesian mythology, Tangaroa, the god of the ocean, is often portrayed as a whale. • For the Darkinjung people in NSW, Australia, whales have a central role in the stories of creation (Dreamtime). The story tells that Gyian the whale was the favourite animal of the creator Baiyami. Baiyami took Gyian the whale on his canoe in a journey though the milky way (Mirrabooka) from the spirit world to the place Earth would be born. After the Earth was created, Baiyami told Gyian that this will be its dreaming place, where it will continue the work of Baiyami. Gyian intermingled with other creatures passing on the laws of Baiyami and spreading the kinship of life. • #repost #rogfreedive #dreamtime #indigenousstories #humpback #humpbackwhale #whalebreach #uwphoto #whales #uwphotographer #whale #oceanphoto - @oceanographic_mag on Instagram

- A Hectors Dolphin has a blocked blowhole. Ordinarily, this would kill a dolphin as it wouldnt be able to breathe, but this particular dolphin has learned to breathe through its mouth instead. This behaviour has never been observed in dolphins before.

- @faunaendemica on Instagram

Despite some foggy conditions on Sunday morning’s whale watch, we managed to find a pair of Humpback Whales. One of the individuals, Gulf of Maine Humpback 1504, took an interest in the Privateer IV, spyhopping and lifting its head out of the water multiple times. The whale watch turned into a people watch thanks to this curious humpback! For this weeks #WildlifeWednesday we are exploring the frigid waters around Antarctica! Killer whales (Orcinus orca) come in many forms (also called ecotypes) and can be found across the globe. In the North Pacific ocean there are three known ecotypes: Residents, Biggs (formally Transients), and Offshores. Each ecotype has their own unique prey preferences, foraging techniques, dialects, behaviors and social groups. In the waters around Antarctica there are at least five distinct ecotypes: Antarctic Type A, Pack ice Type B (large form), Gerlache Type B (small form), Ross Sea Type C, and Sub-Antarctic Type D. Today we will be investigating the largest of the Antarctic killer whales, Type A. . Type A killer whales can grow to an impressive size with males reaching up to 9 meters and 7.7 meters for females. In the waters around Clayoquot Sound, Biggs killer whales are typically the largest and can reach 8 meters in length. Type A killer whales are found around the entire Antarctic continent, in open water, often in family groups of 10-15 individuals. There is evidence to suggest that they migrate from lower latitudes to Antarctic waters during the austral summer months in pursuit of their preferred prey: Antarctic mike whales. Type A killer whales use sophisticated teamwork between family members to pursue minke whales, often over long distances. Like other ecotypes, they work together in a coordinated effort to bring down their prey and share food amongst members. In addition to preying on minke whales, Type As have been recorded hunting southern elephant seals. A bull elephant seal can weigh up to 4,000kg making them the largest extant marine mammal that is not a cetacean. Analysis of stomach contents of Type A killer whales indicates that 89.7% of their diet is composed of marine mammals, 7.1% squid and 3.2% fish. . Have you ever been to Antarctica? Which ecotype would you like to learn more about? . Did you know that the CA51’s starred in the pilot episode of The Blue Planet (original) that aired on September 12th 2001? — 12 million UK viewers watch the episode that had a segment focused on gray whale predations by killer whales based in Monterey Bay. It shows matriarch Star, as a young mom, including CA51A Aurora (who was still a young whale traveling with her mothers pod). I think CA51B Orion can also be seen as a small calf (someone correct me on that if I’m wrong). Bumper was not yet born. 😭✊ #furisdead #fur #fourrure #stopanimalabuse #animalrights #govegan #orque #orca #killerwhale #whale #dolphin #marinepark #captivity #captivitykills #cruauté #cruelty #freedom #liberté #marineland #marinelandantibes #animaux #animals #cirque #circus #captivité #captivity #captivitykills #respect #compassion #NonAuSpécisme #PETA - @peta_france on Instagram

- F A T F I N - C A 1 7 1 B - is an orphaned adult male killer whale. Born around the turn of the century he has become a favorite of California whale watchers. Orphaned at a very young age when his mother died in the early 2000’s his survival is actually very uncommon for a whale orphaned so young. He is frequently seen traveling alone but is also sighted with other orphaned males, or sometimes with other CA Biggs matrilines. — Fatfin is easily identifiable by his thicc dorito shaped dorsal fin and his unusually slim eye patch. He is most frequently spotted in Monterey Bay, but has been seen as far north as British Colombia. Last seen on Saturday, we are excited to see where this badass whale will pop up next! - @elpatagonico on Instagram

I shot this at ISO 6400, not an ideal ISO for blowing up prints to fill an entire wall perhaps, but pushing my ISO is what enabled me to capture this image (and I’m still able to print it the size of a standard gallery print). Today’s tip: Don’t be afraid to push your ISO when photographing wildlife. Coming from more of a landscape and portrait background, you learn very early on to never compromise your photo by increasing the ISO over a certain point, really if at all. It is always ideal to have the lowest ISO possible and to keep it at 100. To preserve the photo and keep the ISO low, landscape and portrait photographs will make use of a tripod in order to allow them to slow down their shutter speed to let in more light while maintaining a sharp image. In the case of wildlife photography, it is essential to be flexible with your ISO and push it to maintain a fast enough shutter speed to enable your camera to capture a moving subject in low light like an orca in dark water under minimal daylight. Would you ever swim with orcas and humpbacks?! Just so you know we do this every year ;) Gear: Canon 5D Mark IV Canon 16-35mm Aquatica Housing Settings: 1/125 f/3.2 ISO 6400 Shot at 18mm Location: Norway Arctic Ocean Photo by instructor for the Wildlife Photo Course @jenninaturally #UltimatePhotoCourse - @ultimatephotocourse on Instagram

Poise and grace. A perfect moment between mother and child in the South Pacific. Humpback whales extraordinarily long pectoral fins (1/3their bid at length) are unique in the cetacean world, allowing them to be quite acrobatic, spinning rolling and arching mostly for the pleasure of movement it seems. - @scottwilsonimagery on Instagram

link in bio THE TIME IS NOW if we want to save the endangered southern resident orca whales. Join @seattletimes journalist Lynda Mapes August 13th, at 6pm PST to learn about the southern resident orca whales that are a signature of our region. Lynda will discuss the status of the Southern residents, including the newly discovered pregnancy of Tahlequah (J35), and share about whats its like covering these whales and their struggle for survival, which Lynda reported on in the award-winning Seattle Times “Hostile Waters” series. Learn more at www.braidedriver.org/orca The event will also include a dialogue with Helen Cherullo, Executive Director of Braided River, the publisher of Lynda’s forthcoming book ORCA: Shared Waters, Shared Home, about how multimedia conservation storytelling can be leveraged to build a movement to protect and recover the Salish Sea and the orca and salmon who call this place home. More about ORCA: Shared Water, Shared Home ORCA is an important new book project coming out Spring 2021 about our Puget Sound region, with meaning and implications that will resonate around the globe. Brought to life by the enduring partnership of two local and independent media—The Seattle Times and @mtnbooks and its conservation arm Braided River— and written by award-winning environmental reporter Lynda Mapes, with photos by Times photographer Steve Ringman. This book will be the foundation for an ambitious Braided River outreach campaign, with live multimedia events, expanded programming and community collaborations. Here’s a dolphin, jumping out of the swell. Is it a robot? It’s quite hard to tell. __ This week we learned that a New Zealand-based company called Edge Innovations has created awesomely cool robotic dolphins so realistic that you apparently can’t tell them from the real thing. But they cost an eye-watering $26m each according to the @guardian. Well - we’ve created our own version that - as with all our creations - also looks exactly like the real thing. But this one’s just a picture - and didn’t cost $26m. __ #thingsihavedrawn #dolphin #edgeinnovations - @thingsihavedrawn on Instagram

We sure picked an amazing week to run four of our famous Extended 8hr Offshore Trips! We had glassy blue water, blue skies, and BLUE WHALES! All of our trips encountered multiple Blue Whales, including cow/calf pairs and some VERY friendly large adults! (see video on our Facebook page!) There has been so much whale activity about 60-70 miles offshore, and while these trips enjoyed the worlds largest animal, there was also reports of Orcas and Sperm Whales in the outer waters! Thats what makes these extended trips so special, you just never know what we might find out there! As a reminder, every Friday and Sunday in September is going to be an extended trip, and we will be adding more to the schedule this evening as well so be sure to stay tuned to our social media pages for updates! These trips sell out incredibly fast, and you do NOT want to miss this opportunity! No other company in San Diego offers anything like this! Another birth for the endangered Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest! The Center for Whale Research has confirmed that J41, (Eclipse) gave birth on September 24th. This great news for the Jpod comes just 20 days after the announcement of Tahlequahs (J35) birth of a male calf, two years after the loss of her calf after just 18 days, and her heartbreaking tour of grief that she shared with the world. Reports share that her new calf J57, is doing very well! . The J,K and L pod Southern Resident orca population faces the ongoing risks of their declining food source (chinook salmon), boat traffic, noise, and pollution. These two births in one month are indeed cause for celebration, but this critically endangered population is still very much at risk. These two beautiful newborns bring the J,K, & L pod population up to 74 individuals. We wish the new Jpod family members well! 💙🐳 #newmom #motherhood #srkw #endangered #orcas #jpod #chinooksalmon #southernresidentkillerwhales #pnw 💙 Photo: @talia.goodyear @leahvanderwiel @orcaspiritvic @pacificwhalewatch - @whalesanctuaryproject on Instagram

Photo by @mitty // Today, Lofoten in Norway is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. Frigid waters well up from the continental shelf here, carrying nutrients that support the planet’s largest cold water reef, along with massive populations of foundation fish. These attract some of the biggest concentrations of cetaceans in the world (humpbacks, sperm whales, and orcas) which put on incredible feeding displays as they drive herring into bait balls and gorge on the much-needed protein. In the spring of 2019, @sealegacy worked with partners in Norway—including @folkeaksjonen, @friends_earth Norway, Young Friends of the Earth Norway, and Workers Youth League—to support, amplify, and galvanize a movement to permanently protect Lofoten in Vesterålen and Senja in northern Norway from oil development. More than 53,000 SeaLegacy supporters joined together and signed the petition to tell the Norwegian parliament that the world was watching, that they stood with Norwegians in protecting this region for generations to come. On April 6, 2019, after the petition signatures were shared, a solid majority of Norway’s Labour Party voted to protect the Lofoten region from oil development, marking a critical turning point in this movement. Visit the link in our bio to read Cristina’s article and learn more about the astonishing wildlife in Lofoten. #OnlyOneOcean #nature #whales - @onlyone on Instagram

Sometimes I hear people on whale watches express disappointment when humpback whales don’t breach, like it’s a given. Personally, I’m still shocked that breaches happen at all. On earth, in real life, today, there are 40 ton animals that can shoot 90% of their body out of the water. It sounds unlikely and I still barely believe my eyes when I see it in person. And no, it doesn’t happen on every single whale watch. But that’s why, even with so many days on the water and a pretty terrible memory, I can clearly recall every single breach I’ve seen. Breaches are special, whales are beautiful, and nature is best enjoyed when you don’t take any of it for granted. • • • • • • • • • • • • #oceanlife #waterlust #lovetheocean #bluesea #marinemammals #whalewatching #whales #humpbackwhale #yourshotphotographer #teamcanon #wildplanet #wildlifephotographer #discoverocean - @chelseamayerphotography on Instagram

- @planetaocean on Instagram

- Killer Whales are some of the most social animals in existence. The base of this is the matriline, the direct descent of the matriarch. A pod may form from one or more matrilines, and share descent from a distant common matriarch. The strong matrilineal bond makes the social order very stable.

Have you ever heard of right whale dolphins? There are two species of right whale dolphins and this is a southern right whale dolphin. Both southern and northern right whale dolphins lack a dorsal fin - like beluga whales - but they are actually dolphins. Southern right whale dolphins are one of the least well-known species of dolphins, in part due to its preference for deep, oceanic waters and its distribution throughout the cool temperate sub-Antarctic waters of the southern hemisphere. In addition, they are only one of two species of right whale dolphins, but we think theyre pretty cool! 😎 📷: Pablo Caceres Contreras . . . #rightwhaledolphin #rightwhaledolphins #dolphin #species #dolphins #dolphinwatching #dolphinlove #dolphinsofinstagram #dolphins🐬 #dolphinsallday #dolphinsareawesome #southern #northern #hemisphere #antarctic #antarctica #saveourocean #saveouroceanlife - @whalesorg on Instagram

France is bringing an end to the captivity of dolphins and whales! In a press conference on Tuesday, France’s minister of ecological transition announced that orca and dolphin shows will be gradually phased out over the next 7-10 years. 🇫🇷 Effective immediately, the country’s three marine parks are not allowed to import or breed dolphins or orcas, and no new dolphinariums will be built. “It is time to open a new era in our relationship with these (wild) animals” said the minister, arguing that animal welfare is a priority. . The movement against dolphin and whale captivity is unstoppable. As more countries take a stand for these intelligent animals who suffer endlessly in captive conditions, the need for sanctuaries is pressing! #StopDelphinarium - @onevoiceanimal on Instagram

After three years of development, a team of scientists and oceanographers from around the country has created a solution to whale fatalities caused by ship collisions and is debuting it right here in the Santa Barbara Channel. Whale Safe, an online tool providing near-real-time data to detect endangered whales, not only rates whale presence but also ranks shipping companies by their sensitivity to marine life. Morgan Visalli — a project scientist at Benioff Ocean Initiative, the UCSB-based collaboration of universities and oceanographic institutes that created the tool — says, “Nobody wants to hit or kill a whale, and they especially don’t want to come into port with a whale wrapped over the bow of a ship.” -- Benioff Ocean Initiative will hold a public information webinar on Whale Safe on Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m. PST. The newest Southern Resident orca, just a few weeks old, has been confirmed to be a BOY. According to reports, baby (J57) and his mom Tahlequah (J35) are both doing well. . It has been two years since Tahlequah lost her young calf who lived for only half an hour, whom she carried for 17 days in a Tour of Grief that garnered worldwide attention. . The endangered Southern Resident population of the Salish Sea continue to face the challenges of their declining food source of chinook salmon, boat noise and traffic, and pollution. The birth of J57 is very good news, bringing the population of these whales to 73. France’s environment minister, Barbara Pompili, has announced a gradual ban on using wild animals in travelling circuses and keeping dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks. Bears, tigers, lions, elephants and other wild animals will also no longer be allowed in travelling circuses “in the coming years” whilst marine parks will be banned from bringing in or breeding dolphins and killer whales. Arguing that animal welfare is a priority, Pompili said: “It is time to open a new era in our relationship with these (wild) animals”, although the ban does not apply to wild animals in other permanent shows and in zoos. Click the link in our bio read the full article. ☝️ ________________ #vegansofig #instavegan #justvegan #vegancommunity #vegan #vegansofinsta #veganforlife #veganism #vegannews #animalrights #animalwelfare #animalactivism #furban #circus #animalcircus #orca #marinepark #emptythecages - @veganfoodandliving on Instagram

Got to play around with some majestic creatures yesterday. Once upon a time, when I was just a wee lad of 3, maybe 4 years old, I was obsessed with this song called “Baby Beluga” by #raffi who was a legend in my young eyes at the time. If you’re wondering whether or not I had that song on repeat in my head the entirety of the interaction in which these photos were taken, the answer is yes. Aluah was a female, she was feisty but she let me dance with her. Ferdinand was a male and a few years older, he was a bit of a prankster and decided to bid us goodbye with a tail full of water to the face. A New Calf for the Southern Resident Orcas! It has been just two years since Tahlequah (J-35), a member of the endangered Southern Resident orca population, gave birth to a calf, who lived only half an hour. Last week, Tahlequah gave birth once again. And according to the Center for Whale Research on September 6th, her new baby, J-57, appears to be doing well: “Her new calf appeared healthy and precocious, swimming vigorously alongside its mother in its second day of free-swimming life. We know that it was not born today because its dorsal fin was upright, and we know that it takes a day or two to straighten after being bent over in the womb, so we assign its birthday as September 4, 2020. (Ergo gestation commenced in February 2019). . The good news and excitement over the new birth is tempered by the fact that the southern residents are officially designated an endangered population and that the mortality rate for young calves is 40 percent. Their troubles are largely due to three factors: the continuing decline of their preferred food chinook salmon; boat noise and traffic; and the pollution of the waters of the Salish Sea. However, the new baby is the third to be born to the southern residents since 2019, and the other two continue to survive. We wish them all well in the days ahead! France’s Ecological Transition Minister, Barbara Pompili, has announced a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses to take effect ‘over the next few years’ as well as measures against keeping dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks and the raising of mink on fur farms. Pompeii announces that It is time that our ancestral fascination with these wild beings no longer translates into situations where their captivity is favored over their well-being. With more than 20 European countries that already limit or ban animals in circuses, France is next and with around 500 wild animals in French circuses they’ve got a long way to go. Pompeli states solutions will be found on a case-by-case basis, with each circus, for each animal. They will also be spending eight million euros to help circuses and dolphinariums adapt to the new bans. This will include Frances three dolphinariums no longer being able to breed new dolphins or killer whales - or have any transported in from other countries. 🐬 - @uniladadventure on Instagram

Worldwide, over 600,000 wild animals live in captivity, even though many aren’t endangered or in need of protection. Even worse: only a small percentage of places where these wild animals are being held have actually been accredited and verified.⠀ ⠀ One animal that all too often suffers this fate: orcas. They’re caught in the wild, placed into tiny tanks, then gawked at by tourists for the rest of their lives. It’s cruel, but it’s also preventable. If we choose to only support travel activities that don’t interfere with an animal’s wild, natural life, these glorified prisons will be forced to change their ways.⠀ ⠀ Travel can change the world. A female orca known best for carrying her dead calf with her for more than two weeks in apparent grief is now mother to a healthy male. Tahlequah, a killer whale living a pod of whales in Pacific Northwest waters, gave birth in early September. Researchers determined this week that her new calf is a boy, after examining images from a photographer who observed the orca pod on Tuesday near Point Roberts, Washington. The calf, known as J57 to researchers, was frolicking alongside Tahlequah (also known as J35) with other orcas close by, photographer Sara Hysong-Shimazu said in a news release from the Pacific Whale Watch Association. “It was really touching to see how active and social they were together and to see J57 surfacing with both his mom and surrounded by others in the community,” Hysong-Shimazu said. “He certainly seemed spunky and energetic!” Tahlequah made headlines in 2018 for carrying her dead calf, which had died minutes after being born, for 17 days. Deborah Giles, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for Conservation Biology, told HuffPost at the time that she felt it was accurate to describe the behavior as grieving. “This is completely unprecedented, and honestly your guess is as good as ours as far as what is going on here,” Giles said. “I think it’s really easy to put human emotions on it, but personally I think it’s accurate. I think she is grieving.” Tahlequah isn’t the only whale in her pod to have given birth recently. J41, also known as Eclipse, gave birth to a “rambunctious little bundle of baby” on Thursday, naturalist Leah Vanderwiel said in a release from the PWWA. Eclipse’s calf’s sex and overall health are still unknown. Read more at our link in bio. // 📷 Katie Jones, Center for Whale Research - @huffpost on Instagram
