Got an up close look at some orca and gray whales with our neighbor friends this weekend! These majestic animals always leave me breathless. The orca pods are critically endangered in Washington State due to lack of salmon, noise pollution, and chemical pollution. Researchers have found orca pods are matriarchal, with some grandmothers living well past 90 years old. Why do orca grandmothers live so long? Young orcas with grandmothers are more likely to stay alive than those without. A calf’s risk of death rises dramatically for two years following the death of its grandmother, who carries knowledge about food resources and navigation paths. These sentient beings deserve to be protected and out of aquariums! 🐋 #blackfish #orca #killerwhale - @jamroub on Instagram

Orcas and rainbows 🌈💕 . . . Today we were treated to around 16 orca visiting our backyard!!!!💥🤩🍀 (yep! you read that right! 👀 The Crew estimated around 16! 😮 #squadgoals❤️ ) . . . They were spread out over a large area cruising solo, in pairs or small groups. Mostly unknown to us, we did recognise six orca that last visited us back in June this year, and again before that in 2016. . . . We’re back! Starting this Friday, boats have been given the green light to resume whale watching and other tourism activities in Monterey and other parts of the state. While the virus is still ongoing, we will be limiting passenger load, practicing social distancing, and keeping up with other health related procedures while onboard. I’ve missed the ocean so much and hope many of you can join me out at sea sometime! We have some whale watching trips planned as well as great white shark trips starting this Sunday. You can either call or email me directly to book, or visit @sanctuarycruises for more help. Looking forward to seeing many of you back on the water soon! - @chasedekkerphotography on Instagram

One of my favourite images and moments. This is the calf that came so close and stayed so still, that I could of gently rested my forehead on its rostrum. The bliss I feel being in the water with these whales is inexpressible. I could of taken many close up photos of its eye, an image I would love to have, however enjoying the moment with the camera off just meant so much more. I could spend forever simply being in the presence of these incredible beings.⁣ ⁣ The void left from of not being with them this year is huge, but the thought of being with them again next year gets me through 🙏🏻⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ #humpback #humpbacks #whales #humpbackwhale #sealife #ocean #humpbackwhales #oceanlife #freedive #cetacean #marinelife #cetaceans #wildlife #canon #uwphotography #freediving - @jonoimages on Instagram

France is bringing an end to the captivity of dolphins and whales! In a press conference on Tuesday, France’s minister of ecological transition announced that orca and dolphin shows will be gradually phased out over the next 7-10 years. 🇫🇷 Effective immediately, the country’s three marine parks are not allowed to import or breed dolphins or orcas, and no new dolphinariums will be built. “It is time to open a new era in our relationship with these (wild) animals” said the minister, arguing that animal welfare is a priority. . The movement against dolphin and whale captivity is unstoppable. As more countries take a stand for these intelligent animals who suffer endlessly in captive conditions, the need for sanctuaries is pressing! In 2018 the world watched with heavy hearts as J-35 (Tahlequah) carried her dead calf for 17 days, over 1,600 kilometers, throughout the Salish Sea. On September 4, 2020 Tahlequah became a mother again, giving birth to a healthy and precocious calf according to researchers at the Center of Whale Research. This calf brings the critically endangered population of Southern Resident Killer Whales (SRKWs) up to 73 individuals. At least two other females in the population are known to be pregnant as well. . Tahlequahs new calf is the first successful birth since J-56 (Tofino) was first spotted in Clayoquot Sound in the spring of 2019. This new calf, and the hope for two more in the near future, brings us a cautious new optimism for the SRKWs. Nutritional stress, resulting from the decline in chinook salmon availability, is one of the many factors that pose threat to the SRKWs. Because of this, a large percentage of pregnancies end in failure and calves face a 40% mortality rate. For Tahlequah, and the rest of the SRKWs, we hope this new calf is able to thrive. . The conservation and restoration of chinook salmon runs is one of the best ways we can help safe guard the future of the SRKWs. This September, Strawberry Isle Marine Research Society will be joining Tofino Resort and Marina for Fish for the Future, a conservation initiative aimed at raising money to protect wild salmon and the ecosystems they rely on. 100% of the proceeds raised by Fish for the Future will be dedicated to various Clayoquot Sound watershed projects in order to safeguard salmon populations for the future. It is our goal to promote conservation through educational outreach and inspire people to make everyday choices that can help to protect the future of salmon and all those who rely on them. . 📸 of J35 and new calf, J57 by Katie Jones, Center for Whale Research . #killerwhales #orca #southernresidentkillerwhales #srkws #marinebiology #marineresearch #conservation #education #tofino - @simrs_tofino on Instagram

We sure picked an amazing week to run four of our famous Extended 8hr Offshore Trips! We had glassy blue water, blue skies, and BLUE WHALES! All of our trips encountered multiple Blue Whales, including cow/calf pairs and some VERY friendly large adults! (see video on our Facebook page!) There has been so much whale activity about 60-70 miles offshore, and while these trips enjoyed the worlds largest animal, there was also reports of Orcas and Sperm Whales in the outer waters! Thats what makes these extended trips so special, you just never know what we might find out there! As a reminder, every Friday and Sunday in September is going to be an extended trip, and we will be adding more to the schedule this evening as well so be sure to stay tuned to our social media pages for updates! These trips sell out incredibly fast, and you do NOT want to miss this opportunity! No other company in San Diego offers anything like this! Dolphins and whales were playing. They were passing below us and suddenly, this whale turned around while looking me directly in the eyes. She got very, very close to me while she danced with the other whale and the dolphins. You could hear how they communicated with each other, you heard the singing of whales and the sound of dolphins. I have been moved to the point where tears filled my eyes, to later merge with the sea... The song Alegría from Cirque du Soleil immediately came to my mind at that moment, and I was listening to it for hours while I edited the photographs. www.AlvaroHerreroPhotography.com - @mekanphotography on Instagram

- @paklyanovvictor on Instagram

😭✊ #furisdead #fur #fourrure #stopanimalabuse #animalrights #govegan #orque #orca #killerwhale #whale #dolphin #marinepark #captivity #captivitykills #cruauté #cruelty #freedom #liberté #marineland #marinelandantibes #animaux #animals #cirque #circus #captivité #captivity #captivitykills #respect #compassion #NonAuSpécisme #PETA - @peta_france on Instagram

The Matriarch: A11 was an incredible mother. Not only to her own daughter, A35, who now continues to grow her own family, but A11 took on the role of adopted mother to Springer, A73. After Springer was re introduced into the Northern resident orca community in 2002 she spent many years in the company of A11 and her family until sadly in 2013, A11 passed away. Her legacy lives on in every recording we make. The beautiful delivery of the N4 passed down from generations before her now transfers to the newest member of the family, A52’s baby, born this year! May her life inspire all the matriarchs out there to carry the strength to nurture the way she did! 🥰 To find out more about how you can support Orcalab and wild Orcas head to orcalab.org and listen live now: 👈🏻🎧 Image 📸 by @wild_sky_productions #orca #matriarch #northernresidentorcas #killerwhale #blackfish #mother #family #community #britishcolumbia #bc #nature #wildlife #canon #photography - @orcalabbc on Instagram

Some encounters stay with you forever. 10 meters deep I held my breath knowing he was around somewhere. Id seen him on previous dives and recognised his crooked dorsal. Six degree water, waiting hoping I held my depth. Then he moved in, mouth open mouth closed mouth open. Closer and closer he came eventually brushing past me. Like he had to know who?. A curious Orca and weird aquatic alien. A moment so surreal I move my camera way from my mask and continued to shoot from my chest. I had to be present and respectful. Dozens Of Whales Photographed By A Drone—When dozens of whales arrived in the small town of Sunnyside, Canada, in July 2020 the photographer Darren Hatt takes out his drone to take pictures of the sky. “At this time of year, it’s common to see them breaking water as they hunt for fish. It’s less common to see so many of them coming so close to the city. They stayed in town for three days before they left. It was the perfect opportunity to photograph these magnificent giants with my drone. Was ist eure Meinung dazu? . . . Canada passes the Free Willy ban, making it illegal to keep dolphins and whales in captivity Offenders could be fined up to $200,000 under the bill. Bill S-203, nicknamed Free Willy, after the acclaimed movie of 1993 in which a boy rescued an orca whale from an amusement park, applies to those who own or have a whale in captivity or are in custody or control. People who breed or impregnate a whale or who possess or seek to obtain reproductive material from whales, including sperm or an embryo, have also been included in the bill. Now these intelligent, social mammals will live there where they belong - in the ocean!🐳 This is great news! A whale’s tale!! It was an eventful day after few futile attempts. Still chasing elusive leaping shot. Each year between April and November, Australia’s eastern coastline comes alive with the spectacular acrobatic displays of humpback whales. Humpback whales migrate around 5000km on average, one of the longest migratory journeys of any mammal on Earth. This is the most amazing news weve heard all week! An orca who became famous around the world in 2018 when she carried her stillborn calf aloft in the water for 17 days has given birth to a healthy baby.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ The not-for-profit Center for Whale Research spotted the baby, dubbed J-57, “swimming vigorously alongside its mother”, named Tahlequah, on Saturday in waters near the border between the US state of Washington and the Canadian province of British Columbia. They estimate that the calf was born on Friday. - @jappermedia on Instagram

There may be nothing stronger than mother-calf bond 🐳 It is well-known that orcas, among many other mammals, grieve their dead calves. Calf mortality may reach 50% during the first year of life. 📸 This is an aerial photo of a female carrying a dead calf for several days last winter in northern Norway. Maintaining surveys and recording individuals reproduction history is important to track the demographics and growth (or decline) of killer whales in Norway. @vesteralen @visitvesteralen #orcas #orca #amazing #photooftheday #greiving #orcacalf #killerwhale - @norwegianorcasurvey on Instagram

Ive been on the water at Bremer Canyon in Western Australia for the past few days, and it has been absolutely epic. They occasionally visit the Coast, feeding on fish and squid. They are a highly social animals and are often seen in large pods Around 20 different species of cetacean are known to visit the Ningaloo Coast and Exmouth Gulf. Продолжение в карусели 👉🏻 - @wild_dolphin_girl on Instagram

I shot this at ISO 6400, not an ideal ISO for blowing up prints to fill an entire wall perhaps, but pushing my ISO is what enabled me to capture this image (and I’m still able to print it the size of a standard gallery print). Today’s tip: Don’t be afraid to push your ISO when photographing wildlife. Coming from more of a landscape and portrait background, you learn very early on to never compromise your photo by increasing the ISO over a certain point, really if at all. It is always ideal to have the lowest ISO possible and to keep it at 100. To preserve the photo and keep the ISO low, landscape and portrait photographs will make use of a tripod in order to allow them to slow down their shutter speed to let in more light while maintaining a sharp image. In the case of wildlife photography, it is essential to be flexible with your ISO and push it to maintain a fast enough shutter speed to enable your camera to capture a moving subject in low light like an orca in dark water under minimal daylight. Would you ever swim with orcas and humpbacks?! Just so you know we do this every year ;) Gear: Canon 5D Mark IV Canon 16-35mm Aquatica Housing Settings: 1/125 f/3.2 ISO 6400 Shot at 18mm Location: Norway Arctic Ocean Photo by instructor for the Wildlife Photo Course @jenninaturally #UltimatePhotoCourse - @ultimatephotocourse on Instagram

Poise and grace. A perfect moment between mother and child in the South Pacific. Humpback whales extraordinarily long pectoral fins (1/3their bid at length) are unique in the cetacean world, allowing them to be quite acrobatic, spinning rolling and arching mostly for the pleasure of movement it seems. - @scottwilsonimagery on Instagram

link in bio THE TIME IS NOW if we want to save the endangered southern resident orca whales. Join @seattletimes journalist Lynda Mapes August 13th, at 6pm PST to learn about the southern resident orca whales that are a signature of our region. Lynda will discuss the status of the Southern residents, including the newly discovered pregnancy of Tahlequah (J35), and share about whats its like covering these whales and their struggle for survival, which Lynda reported on in the award-winning Seattle Times “Hostile Waters” series. Learn more at www.braidedriver.org/orca The event will also include a dialogue with Helen Cherullo, Executive Director of Braided River, the publisher of Lynda’s forthcoming book ORCA: Shared Waters, Shared Home, about how multimedia conservation storytelling can be leveraged to build a movement to protect and recover the Salish Sea and the orca and salmon who call this place home. More about ORCA: Shared Water, Shared Home ORCA is an important new book project coming out Spring 2021 about our Puget Sound region, with meaning and implications that will resonate around the globe. Brought to life by the enduring partnership of two local and independent media—The Seattle Times and @mtnbooks and its conservation arm Braided River— and written by award-winning environmental reporter Lynda Mapes, with photos by Times photographer Steve Ringman. Another birth for the endangered Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific Northwest! The Center for Whale Research has confirmed that J41, (Eclipse) gave birth on September 24th. This great news for the Jpod comes just 20 days after the announcement of Tahlequahs (J35) birth of a male calf, two years after the loss of her calf after just 18 days, and her heartbreaking tour of grief that she shared with the world. Reports share that her new calf J57, is doing very well! . The J,K and L pod Southern Resident orca population faces the ongoing risks of their declining food source (chinook salmon), boat traffic, noise, and pollution. These two births in one month are indeed cause for celebration, but this critically endangered population is still very much at risk. These two beautiful newborns bring the J,K, & L pod population up to 74 individuals. We wish the new Jpod family members well! 💙🐳 #newmom #motherhood #srkw #endangered #orcas #jpod #chinooksalmon #southernresidentkillerwhales #pnw 💙 Photo: @talia.goodyear @leahvanderwiel @orcaspiritvic @pacificwhalewatch - @whalesanctuaryproject on Instagram

Our showstoppers today on Stellwagen Bank were Dome and Music’s 2020 calf. We encountered Dome on both trips today. In the morning she was surface active and in the afternoon she was feeding with some bubble blasts and surface lunging. Music and calf were close to the boat in the afternoon and the calf spent a lot of time laying and rolling on top of mom. As we slowly turned to leave Music’s calf surprised us all with a breach by the boat! - @capeannwhalewatch on Instagram

📷 & 📝 by @rog_freedive: Breach. There are few marine animals who evoke the might and magnificence of the oceans as whales do. Thats probably why whales have been considered divine figures by many ancient cultures. In Polynesian mythology, Tangaroa, the god of the ocean, is often portrayed as a whale. • For the Darkinjung people in NSW, Australia, whales have a central role in the stories of creation (Dreamtime). The story tells that Gyian the whale was the favourite animal of the creator Baiyami. Baiyami took Gyian the whale on his canoe in a journey though the milky way (Mirrabooka) from the spirit world to the place Earth would be born. After the Earth was created, Baiyami told Gyian that this will be its dreaming place, where it will continue the work of Baiyami. Gyian intermingled with other creatures passing on the laws of Baiyami and spreading the kinship of life. • #repost #rogfreedive #dreamtime #indigenousstories #humpback #humpbackwhale #whalebreach #uwphoto #whales #uwphotographer #whale #oceanphoto - @oceanographic_mag on Instagram

Sometimes I hear people on whale watches express disappointment when humpback whales don’t breach, like it’s a given. Personally, I’m still shocked that breaches happen at all. On earth, in real life, today, there are 40 ton animals that can shoot 90% of their body out of the water. It sounds unlikely and I still barely believe my eyes when I see it in person. And no, it doesn’t happen on every single whale watch. But that’s why, even with so many days on the water and a pretty terrible memory, I can clearly recall every single breach I’ve seen. Breaches are special, whales are beautiful, and nature is best enjoyed when you don’t take any of it for granted. • • • • • • • • • • • • #oceanlife #waterlust #lovetheocean #bluesea #marinemammals #whalewatching #whales #humpbackwhale #yourshotphotographer #teamcanon #wildplanet #wildlifephotographer #discoverocean - @chelseamayerphotography on Instagram

- F A T F I N - C A 1 7 1 B - is an orphaned adult male killer whale. Born around the turn of the century he has become a favorite of California whale watchers. Orphaned at a very young age when his mother died in the early 2000’s his survival is actually very uncommon for a whale orphaned so young. He is frequently seen traveling alone but is also sighted with other orphaned males, or sometimes with other CA Biggs matrilines. — Fatfin is easily identifiable by his thicc dorito shaped dorsal fin and his unusually slim eye patch. He is most frequently spotted in Monterey Bay, but has been seen as far north as British Colombia. Last seen on Saturday, we are excited to see where this badass whale will pop up next! I am celebrating the conservation victory in Russia with this Russian killer whale that checked our boat out in the waters off Kamchatka Peninsula. The marine mammal eating killer whales has been added to the Red List which means that it will now be illegal to capture them for aquaria and zoos. Hopefully this is a road to protection of all types of killer whales in Russian waters also the fish eating types as well as a step towards a global ban of killer whales in aquaria.#kamchatka #conservation #wilderness #orca #killerwhale #powerful #whalejail #oceans @bbcearth - @hannestrager on Instagram

That morning we got to swim/surf with these two ancient time capsules They deserve all the respect we humans can offer them! We can all show our respect for these creatures by simply taking responsibility for our own actions and decisions! Everyday things like... * Not drinking out of plastic water bottles * Reading the labels on nasty cleaning products that all end up in the ocean * Using reusable bags for fresh fruit and veg * Changing from plastic to glass for food storage * Picking up rubbish on the beach instead of walking past it! * Educating ourselves on animal agriculture so we can make a informed decision on what to support based on the waste that ends up in the oceans! * Try and shop at bulk food stores to avoid all the single use plastic All these things don’t take any extra time but make a massive difference for the only home these whales have! Exciting news- we have the first match ever made of killer whales sighted off Rottnest Island! Meet George. 🐋 Thanks to citizen science, we were able to identify one male killer whale, George, seen off Rottnest Island in 2016, 2019 and now in 2020- last week. Named by one of our citizen scientists who helped with this match and contributed imagery. This data is invaluable as we continue to build the bigger picture of killer whales seen off Western Australia. 🐋 Thank you to our citizen scientists and contributors: Plaxy, Dan, Ry, Ben and Patrick. Images here credited to: Ry Beaver and Patrick Lane. 🐋 They have all donated imagery that allowed this match of an individual to occur. Without your help and donation of data, we would never have made this discovery. Just an example of the power of citizen science. #citizenscience #projectorca #killerwhaleresearchaustralia - @orcaprojectoz on Instagram

- @elpatagonico on Instagram

I was raised on the east coast and def not on the sea (sup suburbia). For many reasons, I now call the Pacific home. It’s a mix of luck, drive, & privilege that got me here. Some days we spend hours at sea, searching or chumming, and see nothing. Other days, albeit rare, look like this. I’ll be taking a bit of time off from tourism this year but it only makes me more thankful for the experiences I’ve had and that much more stoked for things to come 💦 - @fakewhiteshark on Instagram

Photo by @BrianSkerry An Orca mother carries her dead calf as she swims in the waters of the Norwegian Arctic. Orca calf mortality is high, often due to toxic contaminants in the mother’s milk (pollutants in the ocean). I witnessed this mourning procession on a dark, cold and snowy day and was touched deeply by the empathy exhibited by this mom and her family. Dolphins and whales are highly cognitive animals and have complex cultures that we are only beginning to appreciate. After three years of development, a team of scientists and oceanographers from around the country has created a solution to whale fatalities caused by ship collisions and is debuting it right here in the Santa Barbara Channel. Whale Safe, an online tool providing near-real-time data to detect endangered whales, not only rates whale presence but also ranks shipping companies by their sensitivity to marine life. Morgan Visalli — a project scientist at Benioff Ocean Initiative, the UCSB-based collaboration of universities and oceanographic institutes that created the tool — says, “Nobody wants to hit or kill a whale, and they especially don’t want to come into port with a whale wrapped over the bow of a ship.” -- Benioff Ocean Initiative will hold a public information webinar on Whale Safe on Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m. PST. #StopDelphinarium - @onevoiceanimal on Instagram

I’m going on one month of being without my camera, and it’s starting to get to me... This photo is one of the last I was able to take before sending it off to @nikoncanada. We had two humpbacks going off in the Juan de Fuca Strait while in 5-10ft swells. The swell was so big at some points that we could see the humpbacks rising through them before actually breaching the waters surface. Hopefully something happens with my camera soon, I’ve been missing some incredible opportunities out there. - @karaclindsay on Instagram

27•07•2020 Yesterday I received an amazing gift, I finally saw an Adult male Orca. They are impressive and majestic animals. Look at their size compared to the boat, they are beautiful and enormous. Did you know that males are larger than females, and adult males are distinguishable (sexually dimorphic) by the increased size of their dorsal fin at sexual maturity (about 25 years). Male orcas usually grow to an average of 20-26 feet (6-8 m) and weigh 12,000 lb or more (5,400 kg). Male orcas become fully sexually mature at age 25. Between ages 12 and 15, their dorsal fin begins to grow taller and straighter, indicating the onset of sexual maturity. Male orcas typically don’t mate until after the age of 20. Males in the wild live 29 years on average, to a maximum of 50–60 years. A captive orcas lifespan is typically much shorter, often by 25 years or more. Don’t attend or support shows that keep animals in captivity. It is horrible to be locked up. #orca #wildlife #wanderlust #animals #saltlife #epic #explore #magic #nature #scuba #ocean #marinelife #dolphins #underwater #padi #adventure #sealife #oceanlife #sea #wildlifephotograph #afeland - @afelandrina on Instagram

[ Touch ] When they finally touched their souls caught fire. . . Is hard to describe the different feelings you can get from touch, the cold hand of a stranger, the firey grasp of a soul mate and the comforting grip of family. When I saw this image in my lightroom it reminded me of a dream I had recently where I was just holding hands with an anonymous figure, it didnt feel like a memory it just was a wholesome need being met, I woke up and my first thought was ahh fk I need a cat. . . So when I saw this image I immediately thought of the touch a mother gives to a child and witnessing that care first hand has always stuck with me. . . Do any of these photos look funny to you? Got to play around with some majestic creatures yesterday. Once upon a time, when I was just a wee lad of 3, maybe 4 years old, I was obsessed with this song called “Baby Beluga” by #raffi who was a legend in my young eyes at the time. If you’re wondering whether or not I had that song on repeat in my head the entirety of the interaction in which these photos were taken, the answer is yes. A New Calf for the Southern Resident Orcas! It has been just two years since Tahlequah (J-35), a member of the endangered Southern Resident orca population, gave birth to a calf, who lived only half an hour. Last week, Tahlequah gave birth once again. And according to the Center for Whale Research on September 6th, her new baby, J-57, appears to be doing well: “Her new calf appeared healthy and precocious, swimming vigorously alongside its mother in its second day of free-swimming life. We know that it was not born today because its dorsal fin was upright, and we know that it takes a day or two to straighten after being bent over in the womb, so we assign its birthday as September 4, 2020. (Ergo gestation commenced in February 2019). . The good news and excitement over the new birth is tempered by the fact that the southern residents are officially designated an endangered population and that the mortality rate for young calves is 40 percent. Their troubles are largely due to three factors: the continuing decline of their preferred food chinook salmon; boat noise and traffic; and the pollution of the waters of the Salish Sea. However, the new baby is the third to be born to the southern residents since 2019, and the other two continue to survive. We wish them all well in the days ahead! A female orca known best for carrying her dead calf with her for more than two weeks in apparent grief is now mother to a healthy male. Tahlequah, a killer whale living a pod of whales in Pacific Northwest waters, gave birth in early September. Researchers determined this week that her new calf is a boy, after examining images from a photographer who observed the orca pod on Tuesday near Point Roberts, Washington. The calf, known as J57 to researchers, was frolicking alongside Tahlequah (also known as J35) with other orcas close by, photographer Sara Hysong-Shimazu said in a news release from the Pacific Whale Watch Association. “It was really touching to see how active and social they were together and to see J57 surfacing with both his mom and surrounded by others in the community,” Hysong-Shimazu said. “He certainly seemed spunky and energetic!” Tahlequah made headlines in 2018 for carrying her dead calf, which had died minutes after being born, for 17 days. Deborah Giles, a research scientist at the University of Washington’s Center for Conservation Biology, told HuffPost at the time that she felt it was accurate to describe the behavior as grieving. “This is completely unprecedented, and honestly your guess is as good as ours as far as what is going on here,” Giles said. “I think it’s really easy to put human emotions on it, but personally I think it’s accurate. I think she is grieving.” Tahlequah isn’t the only whale in her pod to have given birth recently. J41, also known as Eclipse, gave birth to a “rambunctious little bundle of baby” on Thursday, naturalist Leah Vanderwiel said in a release from the PWWA. Eclipse’s calf’s sex and overall health are still unknown. Read more at our link in bio. // 📷 Katie Jones, Center for Whale Research - @huffpost on Instagram

Its been a killer ( 😉 ) month for #killerwhales along the trail, with our resident #orca spotted from many sites - including Ardnamurchan Lighthouse and Glengorm just last night! Pictured are our local legends John Coe and Aquarius, two male killer whales from the West Coast Community. The Scottish gaelic for orca is madah-cuain which translates as ocean-wolf - an apt name for these intelligent creatures as they live and hunt in pods, and have even been known to prey on minke whales! The newest Southern Resident orca, just a few weeks old, has been confirmed to be a BOY. According to reports, baby (J57) and his mom Tahlequah (J35) are both doing well. . It has been two years since Tahlequah lost her young calf who lived for only half an hour, whom she carried for 17 days in a Tour of Grief that garnered worldwide attention. . The endangered Southern Resident population of the Salish Sea continue to face the challenges of their declining food source of chinook salmon, boat noise and traffic, and pollution. The birth of J57 is very good news, bringing the population of these whales to 73. We wish mom, calf and all of the Jpod residents well! 🐳 Photo: @hysazu #southernresidentkillerwhales #tahlequah #orca #jpod #srkw #endangered #wildlife #nature #sanjuanislands #pod #motherhood - @whalesanctuaryproject on Instagram

Great news! Frances minister of ecological transition has announced that the country will be phasing out cetacean captivity! The countrys three dolphinariums are no longer allowed to breed or acquire more cetaceans. She also said that no new dolphinariums will be built in France and that the country was looking at the idea of a sanctuary for the dolphins and three orcas currently in captivity. This is a HUGE step that we hope other countries will follow! #CaptivityKills #DontBuyATicket! - @oceanicpreservationsociety on Instagram

France’s Ecological Transition Minister, Barbara Pompili, has announced a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses to take effect ‘over the next few years’ as well as measures against keeping dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks and the raising of mink on fur farms. Pompeii announces that It is time that our ancestral fascination with these wild beings no longer translates into situations where their captivity is favored over their well-being. With more than 20 European countries that already limit or ban animals in circuses, France is next and with around 500 wild animals in French circuses they’ve got a long way to go. Pompeli states solutions will be found on a case-by-case basis, with each circus, for each animal. They will also be spending eight million euros to help circuses and dolphinariums adapt to the new bans. This will include Frances three dolphinariums no longer being able to breed new dolphins or killer whales - or have any transported in from other countries. 🐬 - @uniladadventure on Instagram

France’s environment minister, Barbara Pompili, has announced a gradual ban on using wild animals in travelling circuses and keeping dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks. Bears, tigers, lions, elephants and other wild animals will also no longer be allowed in travelling circuses “in the coming years” whilst marine parks will be banned from bringing in or breeding dolphins and killer whales. Arguing that animal welfare is a priority, Pompili said: “It is time to open a new era in our relationship with these (wild) animals”, although the ban does not apply to wild animals in other permanent shows and in zoos. Click the link in our bio read the full article. ☝️ ________________ #vegansofig #instavegan #justvegan #vegancommunity #vegan #vegansofinsta #veganforlife #veganism #vegannews #animalrights #animalwelfare #animalactivism #furban #circus #animalcircus #orca #marinepark #emptythecages - @veganfoodandliving on Instagram

Worldwide, over 600,000 wild animals live in captivity, even though many aren’t endangered or in need of protection. Even worse: only a small percentage of places where these wild animals are being held have actually been accredited and verified.⠀ ⠀ One animal that all too often suffers this fate: orcas. They’re caught in the wild, placed into tiny tanks, then gawked at by tourists for the rest of their lives. It’s cruel, but it’s also preventable. If we choose to only support travel activities that don’t interfere with an animal’s wild, natural life, these glorified prisons will be forced to change their ways.⠀ ⠀ Travel can change the world. But first we need to change travel. Join the conversation via the link in our bio. #Retravel #Gadventures - @gadventures on Instagram

Puget Sound’s orca whales are one of the most polluted marine mammals in the world. Toxic chemicals like flame retardants are building up in their bodies & causing a host of health problems.
