This week we are completing the final part in a long term plan ( 30 years ) to replant the entire farm area above the Lost World Cave system. The area that has now been retired back to native bush is approximately 50 hectares. Apart from providing a habitat for native birds these trees will do an important job protecting the quality of the water in the underground streamway. Thanks to Environment Waikato and the Scott family for their support in this worthy endeavour. We had amazing weather ☀️ the entire day road tripping 🚙 around Isle of Skye, but when we got to Neist Point the mist rolled in. It makes sense at times like this that “Skye” in Gaelic translates to “mist”, so the area is known as the Isle of Mist💨! ☁️ It was so windy, that the little streams of water that normally flow over the edge to form tiny waterfalls actually flew UP ⬆️ into the air instead of down. ☁️ Neist Point is the most western point on Isle of Skye. On a clear day you can see a light house on the tip of this peninsula. In this photo if you look really closely you can see a tiny white light house! Our @rabbies_tours guide assured us this was the view we’d want to see, and he was correct! ☁️ I almost didn’t want to get out of the car in the rain because I wasn’t sure what we would be able to see, and the entire day was packed with amazing sites so I didn’t think we’d be able to top them. The walk to this view was through a lot of puddles and mud. This was one of those times I wore my suede shoes instead of waterproof ones (I don’t know what I was thinking...can we blame the jet lag?) We’re getting lots of wonderful feedback from the two guided walks titled, ‘A Journey To 1870’s Lacken’ which took place on Thursday and Saturday of last week. Organised in celebration of National Heritage Week, the events proved to be hugely enjoyable, informative and really well presented by local guide and Lacken resident, Alfie Zeller. Thank you to everyone who participated, and most especially to Alfie and his family for leading the event and for those lucky enough to join us on Saturday, for also providing the welcome surprise of tea and home-made treats at the Lacken Community Centre afterwards. (This album captures the Saturday event). … The linear walk followed the mountainous route once taken by the communities of Lugnagun and Blackrock to Lacken, where the nearest school, church, shops and other amenities were located until the motor vehicle arrived. Linking with the recently restored Mass Paths, the walks passed numerous examples of abandoned settlements, historical sites and natural features, which Alfie drew our attention to and shared the stories (and folklore) of each of them. Stops and discussion included, the evolution of the local communities and families, the tapestry of geographical features that seemed to change at every corner, the Wicklow Mountains National Park, the formation of the Poulaphouca Reservoir and a megalithic tomb constructed during the Neolithic Period around 3,300BC – one of several known megalithic sites in the area, with the passage tombs of Seefin, Seahan and Seafingan located on nearby slopes. … The two groups made up of all ages, had travelled from throughout Wicklow and the neighbouring Dublin, to join the event organised to coincide with this year’s National Heritage Week programme. Coordinated by @TheHeritageCouncil since 2005, @NationalHeritageWeek has become Ireland’s largest cultural event. Three days on the Slieve Bloom Way. This is an outstanding trail. The 70km trail brings you in and around the spectacular Slieve bloom mountains. We decided to add an extra 20km to see the south west region of the mountains. The entire area is a nature reserve, so you are treated to stunning waterfalls and rugged off road hiking. We were spoiled with great weather on our last day too. Ive read up on it and what I can ascertain is that the usual dialogue occues of boy meets girl 💁‍♀️🙎‍♂️ she is well fit (and came out of the lake), he says I promise to not knock you about, they get married💒, get knocked up🤱🍼 push out some kids, have a farm. He then hits her 3 times (3 times too many) and she says Im off she goes backs to the lake and takes their Oxes with her. Apparently you can see marked furrows running across Myddfai Mountain to the edge of Llyn Y Fan Fach, which apparently proves the story is true. . ~Stay-cationing, Simplicity and Slowing Down~ I have just returned from a wonderfully nourishing 5 days holidaying in West Cork.  My parents have returned for two weeks every year for the last 25 years or so to this beautiful spot on the Beara Peninsula. The Beara Peninsula is nothing short of magical, and I am suffering today from withdrawal symptoms and the grieving one suffers following a break that has been looked forward to for many months.  As my family have always stay-cationed, there is nothing new in the experience for me/for them, but for anyone still feeling disappointed for lack of foreign travel this summer... I could not recommend more highly the nourishment value of holidaying in Ireland. Our country is so incredibly beautiful... and the wilderness and diversity of weather conditions is more healing than it is inconvenient.  It keeps life interesting and exciting to never know what weather lies ahead in the next week/day/hours.  There is beautiful simplicity in jumping in a car and driving familiar roads to familiar places, with a commitment to hike, swim, eat well and relax each day with a book, and little else to worry about.  The added benefit of holidaying with my parents of course is the obligation to slow down to the pace of the slowest member of the family (photographed here)... whose moods are like the West Cork weather when he climbs a mountain, and whose pace forces everyone to slow down and smell the heather. The mood is dark on the ascent, and bright on the descent... as the hike becomes his favourite walk, and the day the best day of his life.  😂 He is very slow to go into the water, and even slower to come out, with ones pep talks having one remind oneself how beautiful an experience this all is, followed by his fantastic new mood post-walk/post-swim reflecting it all back to you.  Theres no doubt that my parents are exceptionally patient people, but there are certainly benefits to slow-living and a daily appreciation for the simple things (mostly food), as demonstrated by John.  Its all about ones attitude! FIELD REPORT: Epic work by @rpalmer415 and the Greno Trail Clean Crew 💥 . It was always planned to be a low key thing with a few mates, just to avoid complications with social distancing. . I should also thank Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust for giving permission and for the loan of the litter pickers. . My ‘favourite’ item from yesterday was the kid’s umbrella. What sort of person just throws that into the undergrowth when it breaks? . Generally though we were pleasantly surprised on the amount of litter. Greno has 3 trails, Steel City DH being the most popular and that was where 90% of the trash was found. The other two runs, Pub Run and DH3 were pretty clear. There are less places to stop and session on those trails so I think that’s the reason. . We got a bag full in the car park too, where there are litter bins! Anyway, it was certainly well worth doing and we got plenty of thank you’s from the riders. . Day 1 of Land’s End to John O’Groats done ✅ • “Well, Cornwall’s rather hilly isn’t it?!” • @geraldmchugh summed up the day with this comment only about an hour on from Land’s End 😂 so good to have company and a catch-up. Gerald had joined me from Devon at the B&B on Tuesday evening and we had a nice easy 6km to Land’s End to kick start the day, before riding 160km together to Tavistock where we parted ways. After a cream tea in Minions on the edge of Bodmin Moor 😋 • I then continued across Dartmoor (incredibly beautiful!) and into Somerset and then sneaking into Dorest to reach my bed at 2am 🙈 massive thanks to @asamholloway for leaving the door open for me! Today, in this nondescript building in a culturally diverse neighborhood deep in west London, I passed the UK citizenship test. Taking this test was weirdly emotional for me...the 5 year journey through temporary visas, confusing and complicated paperwork, ridiculous amounts of money spent on visa applications, immigration lawyers etc. has finally come to an end at long last. The fact that I can now permanently remain in the country where my daughter was born is a relief, but it’s no secret that the system favors people like me, and it’s such a bittersweet feeling to celebrate this milestone in my personal journey knowing that there are families all over the world that, due to circumstances beyond their control, can’t be together. Against the backdrop of the events of the past week, I was able to examine my privilege and look at the system that has benefitted me. While studying the official UK History book for this test, I tried to put myself in the shoes of a non-white person studying this material which, for the most part, treads very lightly on Black history (other than a brief couple of paragraphs on slavery) and makes few mentions of Black historical figures or pop culture icons. It made me realize how crucial it is that we expand curriculums to reflect the diversity of this world and educate the next generation, because at the moment the only way for me to learn about people like Harold Moody, Roy Hackett, Owen Henry, Audley Evans, Prince Brown, Ignatius Sancho, Olaudah Equiano, or John Edmonstone was to proactively seek out this (currently) alternative UK history. I’m embarrassed to say I wasn’t familiar with any of these people because I wasn’t proactive enough to educate myself. If it weren’t for events this week, I very likely would have passively accepted the whitewashed version of history in the 180 page “official” history book and moved on, but spending some time to dig a little deeper has given me perspective and woven a much richer historical tapestry. I’m thankful that we’ve all been shaken up a bit, and vow to continue to educate myself so that I can be the empathetic, positive and hopeful person that that I have always believed myself to be. - @msaimeephillips on Instagram

Yesterday, we spent the afternoon cleaning up trash at the North end of San Franciscos Ocean Beach and holding banners along the Great Highway to raise awareness that 2020 is the year we must act to control the most devastating effects of the climate crisis. Over the years, Ocean Beach has seen dead whales, oil spills, and many, many years of wanton litter, especially plastic litter. There are regular beach cleanups organized by many organizations and schools, but fundamentally, the ecological disaster that is plastic dumping into our oceans will never be addressed until we radically shift away from our current consumerist obsession with unsustainable materials. When I was in a muddle with my FOOD RELATIONSHIP, going out to eat spontaneously was pretty hard. We’re all very pleased to announce the total findings from the beach clean. 113.7kg of rubbish was found by around 80 volunteers this morning on castle beach and going round near pendennis point too! It’s been a really amazing effort and we’ve all enjoyed it, we hope you all had a fab day too! Also a big thank you to whoever helped to clear the sand and seaweed from outside the cafe and along the walkway, it wasn’t at all necessary and everyone’s generosity really helped us and saved us weeks worth of time! Turen er lett med lite stigning langs sjøen frem til Måstad før det er bratt opp til Måstadhornet. #Repost @dunna_chuck_bruck with @kimcy929_repost • • • • • • We had so much fun this weekend in Unst for Shetland Nature Festival and @unstfest 2019! 💚 Around thirty amazing volunteers joined us on our nature walk and beach clean at Woodwick on Saturday morning. The team cleared around twenty-five bags of bruck plus masses of fishing floats, larger bits of plastic, rope and huge pieces of net that needed sawing up in order to shift! This is a particularly attractive beach for bruck due to the tides and shape of the bay, but it is difficult to clean up as there is a 2km walk on rough and steep terrain to reach it, let alone bring it back for disposal. A massive thank you to everyone who volunteered, the committees at Unstfest and Shetland Nature Festival, the brilliant landowners who are removing the bruck from Woodwick by quad and trailer over the next couple of days, and @shetlandheritage for taking the bruck out of Unst for disposal with SIC. Day 1: 18th August. The End to End This. We made our way up to the source of River Bann in the marshy lands of the Mourne Mountains. Hugged by mist and joined by friends, Doris and Chris @saveheaneycountry and @sandscolum , we followed its stream. Sadly we filled the two bin liners we had with us in an hour. Bere Island is a beautiful Island of the Beara Peninsula in County Cork, Ireland. To get to this Island we brought our car on the @bereislandferries from Castletownbere. It costs €25 per car return or €8 per person return (with no car) You can see their timetable on their website. We left Castletownbere at 11.30am and arrived at Bere Island just before 12, ready to start our amazing adventure. The Sweden Bridges walk from our hotel @langdalechase was just one of the lovely walks we did in Ambleside, Lake District. WE ALL MADE IT!! To the highest point on Dartmoor and back again .... And .... Whats more, we learnt a few things along the way! 1. Soy Sauce makes a mean topping for campsite noodles in the wild. 2. Twinkle lights are essential for campsite ambience - especially with two live wire boys 😂 3. Waterproof socks are only waterproof up to the point where they end on your ankles (many bogs are deeper than this point! ). 4. Heroes dont always wear capes. 5. You can spend a night awake and rise to the morning sun feeling refreshed (how does that work ?!) pre- coffee too! 6. The stars are stunning and make me feel small. In a comforting blanket filled way. 7. Laughing is the best medicine (and nature .... and movement and the quiet of the remote place) ... 8. Not all chocolate is vegan (always check the label 😉💚). 9. Small copper butterflies are eye catchingly beautiful. 10. It is entirely possible to get to somewhere that feels far away, and to motivate others to do the same. Provided you have courage, a great team ethos (sticking together was ours!) and a secret stash of provisions 😂 !
