IBM today, for the first time, published its road map for the future of its quantum computing hardware. There is a lot to digest here, but the most important news in the short term is that the company believes it is on its way to building a quantum processor with more than 1,000 qubits — and somewhere between 10 and 50 logical qubits — by the end of 2023. Currently, the company’s quantum processors top out at 65 qubits. It plans to launch a 127-qubit processor next year and a 433-qubit machine in 2022. To get to this point, IBM is also building a completely new dilution refrigerator to house these larger chips, as well as the technology to connect multiple of these units to build a system akin to today’s multi-core architectures in classical chips. We are very sad to learn of Neville Clark’s passing. Neville has been our mastering engineer since we first rolled up at his door in Brompton with our debut EP, ‘Back Once Again’. Over the years we formed a working relationship, and more importantly a friendship, with Neville and his wife Ros. Debris (Barry) and Neville became particularly close, bonding over their shared love of sound and technology. Neville and Ros made an incredible team, both patient, kind and generous with their time. Neville’s passing leaves a chasm in the South Australian music community, where he was universally liked, loved and respected. He had a breadth and depth of knowledge about his craft that was unmatched. We can credit a lot of our success to Neville, who had an ear for sound that can’t be taught or learned. More importantly Neville was a loving father and husband and we are sending our condolences and all of our love to his family and friends. Had a nice 🤯 moment recently. . In 2005, shortly before I knew about Silver Apples, I was obsessed with @cariboumusic’s album “The Milk of Human Kindness.” I was particularly in love with the song “Hello Hammerheads.” A couple weeks ago I decided to pop on “Milk” and give it long overdo revisit. I put on my fav song and the hairs stood up on my arms. For the first time it was so clear to me that “Hammerheads” was a loving tribute to Silver Apples’ “Seagreen Serenades.” . I’m aware this is a very nerdy, potentially boring, realization to have—but I was blown away regardless. It was a connection that made me flash through my many years as a music lover. My ears as a young college guy weren’t yet trained for something as strange and special as Silver Apples, but teachers like Caribou pointed me in the right direction. A Water Album is here today, Juneteenth, on vinyl (at BennyStarrSC.com) and all streaming platforms. It was recorded live at Charleston Music Hall to a packed house. Benny told a story that needed to be told, and he did it with Charleston artists and a community who believe in the music, message, and artistry. I couldn’t be more proud of @benny_starr and the community today. This entire project was grassroots, independently produced. I know the hard work and passion that went into it, from Benny to the community surrounding him - the musicians, producers, visual artists, activists, friends, family, production/mgmt team, Charleston Music Hall crew, mixing, mastering, and sponsors. The energy of that evening is still locked in my mind as I’m sure it is for anyone who was there.
