I know for a lot of us, we went vegan because we saw graphic footage. So much vegan activism revolves around showing others this footage. Hell, I spent the better part of two years of my life traveling the country showing people graphic footage, five days a week. So I understand these this disturbing imagery, for better or worse, is an important part of the journey for many of us. But the longer Ive been vegan, the more Ive seen patterns and trends emerge, and I fear that we have an unhealthy obsession with trauma in this movement, an obsession with death and punishment. So many activists feel this need to self flaggelate by rewatching this footage. Pennace for our former non-vegan ways. In fact, when certain graphic documentaries come out, Ive seen vegans tell other vegans it is their duty to watch it, to bear witness. Weve come to view activism as forcing trauma on others, or on ourselves as we sit idly by, watching animals go off to die. But what purpose does this really serve other than to retraumatize ourselves again and again? Ive seen Earthlings twice in my life. Both times I was already vegan and both times it enraged me to the point of becoming unable to *do anything*. I was just mad at the world, I was mad at humanity, and all I could think was I hate anyone that participates in this. And while those may be the appropriate reactions to such horror, I dont think it actually creates the mental space to welcome others into the movement. It just creates an us vs them dynamic. I worry that saturating ourselves in graphic footage pushes us to engage in activism that is more interested in punishing non-vegans rather than saving animals. As Cornell West said You cant lead the people unless you love the people. We cant create change by hating those we wish to inspire to join us. The longer Ive been doing this, the more Ive realized we need to practice activism in a way that burns down oppressive systems while simultaneously creating the world we actually want to live in. My ideal world isnt filled with people swapping and compounding trauma. How about yours? This post was inspired by one I shared from @crazyfuckinvegan recently. - @compassionco on Instagram

Troops being denied Healthcare, being denied justice in legal cases, being denied basic standards of living, and having all of it lied about publicly in the news. Its just like the mold that gets painted over in the barracks, just to grow through the paint weeks later (Ill be covering that soon). Theyre dressing up a crumbling force with new uniforms and sharply edited recruiting ads, while the inside is full of rot. We are not addressing this problem and where it actually begins.
